How cops traced don Ravi Pujari living under a different name in Senegal

Crime
Though it has been 12 days since Ravi was arrested in Dakar, the Karnataka government has no clue when Ravi Pujari will be extradited to India.
PTI
Underworld don Ravi Pujari, who was detained in Senegal on Thursday, was living under a false identity with a fake passport from Burkina Faso, Indian intelligence officials said. Ravi was caught inside a barber shop in Dakar and detained by Senegal's police force for identification, as he was masquerading as a man named Antony Fernandez, with a fake passport from Burkina Faso. The Mumbai Crime Branch claimed that the don was picked up from a hotel based on information provided by them. Gujarat ATS officials meanwhile claimed that the information that led to the don's arrest was provided by Akash Shetty, his aide, who was arrested in Gujarat, reported The New Indian Express. Meanwhile, Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy called it a success for the coalition government in the state.   "State Additional General of Police (ADGP) for Intelligence Amar Kumar Pandey kept track of Ravi since June first in Burkina Faso and later in Senegal where he shifted with wife and children and was operating a restaurant chain in partnership with locals," said an official statement of the Karnataka government. Though Amar lost track of Ravi alias Fernandez in Burkina Faso, he found him subsequently in Dakar and alerted Indian Ambassador to Senegal Rajeev Kumar in order to arrest him with the help of the local police. "The Senegal Interior Minister and its Director of Judicial Police arrested Ravi from a barber shop in Dakar and his original identity was found," said the statement. Though it has been 12 days since Ravi was arrested in Dakar, the Karnataka government has no clue when he will be extradited to India and flown to Bengaluru or Mangaluru on the state's west coast where he operated. "Ravi carried out his criminal activities across four coastal states of Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra and Gujarat since 2001, employing sharpshooters to attack targets for extorting huge sums of money," said the statement. The don used to select the place of attack and targets for extortion from those referred by his contacts in India. His victims included rich doctors, real estate agents, business magnates, jewellers, actors from Hindi and Kannada films, mining barons, politicians and commodity merchants.

Video: Miscreants seen pulling down pillar of Hampi temple ruins, police launch probe

Crime
The video, which went viral on Friday, angered the locals and several people took to the streets in protest on Saturday morning.
Two men are seen pushing and destroying erect pillars at the site of temple ruins. The video looks like a recording of an Instagram story. This went viral when a man named Ayush Sahu posted the story claiming that the two men were pushing down the pillars at Hampi, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site.  The video, which went viral on Friday, angered the locals and several people took to the streets on Saturday morning, demanding that the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) take greater care of heritage sites.  A couple of weeks ago, the New York Times had declared Hampi as the second most desirable place to visit in its list of the top 52 tourist destinations in the world for 2019. Speaking to TNM, Shanaa, a resident of Hampi, said that the video was circulating on WhatsApp since Friday morning. She also insisted that the government must spread more awareness regarding the importance of a heritage structure.  "The ruins are located behind the Lotus Mahal. It is the remnants of a Vishnu Temple. We inspected the spot today (Saturday) and the pillars were on the ground," the Hampi Police said. However, the ASI officials, on Saturday filed a complaint with the Hampi Police, stating that the video was shot a year ago and asked the police to take quick action.  "ASI officials are saying the video was shot a year ago. But several locals claim that they saw the pillars erect three days before the video went viral. We are in the process of registering an FIR against the miscreants and we will launch a speedy investigation into the matter," the Hampi Police told TNM.  The Vijayanagara Smaraka Samskrithi Samrakshana Sene (VSSS) on Saturday staged a protest demanding proper protection for the monuments. "No one cares about the monuments here. Two to three years ago, someone damaged pillars at Achyutha Raya Bazaar. The ASI does not care about these structures either. In fact, ASI is responsible for damaging the pillars at the Virupaksha Bazaar," said Vishwanath Malagi, convenor of VSSS. Vishwanath alleges that the ASI is claiming that the video is old only to escape the charges of negligence.  "There is the State Archaeology Department, Archaeological Survey of India and Hampi World Heritage Management Authority. All of them are just cooling their heels. No one is bothered about the monuments. If the ASI knew that the video was shot a year ago, why did they not report it and file a police complaint then? They are only trying to protect themselves as they are to blame for negligence. We should have a special DySP to keep track of those who damage these monuments. Crimes like destruction of heritage structures are not taken seriously. They think it’s the same as a minor traffic violation, which can be rectified with a warning," he added.  @AmitShah Sir request you to have a look on the video and pls take action against that maroon who is destroying our world heritage Hampi #savehampi pic.twitter.com/Qd80vLYNgr — Thyagaraj (@Thyagaa) February 1, 2019

B'luru bishop threatened survivor with old sexual abuse video, alleges her friend

Crime
Bishop Samuel allegedly threatened to make public a video in which the survivor was being sexually abused if she did not have sexual intercourse with him.
The case of a Bengaluru Dalit woman, who was allegedly sexually harassed by PK Samuel, the Central Diocese of Church of South India, and subsequently attempted suicide, has taken a murkier turn. Police investigating the case say that Hema's* ordeal began in 2013 when she was a resident of an orphanage run by a South Korean man named Do-Wong Choy. Do-Wong Choy was accused of sexually abusing the women in the orphanage, while his associate Manual Jaysingh was accused of filming these incidents. The duo was accused of blackmailing the women for sex. The issue came out when in 2013, a woman accused Choy of raping her in June that year, and a complaint was registered at the Kothanur Police Station. However, Choy and Manual were acquitted in the case in January this year. Meanwhile, Hema attempted to kill herself on January 31, following a verbal altercation with Bishop PK Samuel, said Harsha, DCP East. Bishop PK Samuel has been booked under Sections 354 (using criminal force to assault a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Read:  B'luru woman attempts suicide, accuses bishop of sexual harassment and intimidation "In 2013, Hema was also a resident of the same orphanage (run by Choy) and there was a video of her as well. This is where Vinod Dasan comes in. Vinod Dasan is a member of the CSI and not a pastor. He is considered the right-hand man of Bishop Samuel. In 2013, when Hema filed the complaint against Vinod Dasan with the Kothanur Police, she had accused him of threatening to expose the video, which was in his possession. That case is still being heard by the sessions court in Bengaluru. She had accused him of threatening to distribute obscene materials (section 292 of the IPC)," a member of CSI, who is close to the survivor, told TNM. Police suspect that Vinod Dasan was involved in the sexual abuse racket at the orphanage. They say that Vinod Dasan was not a pastor but a member of the Church of South India and was nominated by Bishop PK Samuel as a member of the Diocese Council. "His membership to the Council is pending confirmation. Vinod Dasan could not be nominated since there were criminal charges pending against him. He found out that the survivor was married and so he is believed to have threatened her to comply with his demands or that he will show the videos to her husband," a police officer said. The CSI member corroborated the police version and alleged that on January 13 this year, Vinod had visited Hema's home in Bengaluru and threatened to show the video to her husband if she did not meet Bishop Samuel. On January 21, Hema allegedly decided to take her husband along with her, as she suspected that Vinod and Bishop Samuel would cause her harm. "When they met at the Holy Trinity Church located in Trinity Circle, Vinod Dasan took her husband aside. Bishop Samuel then demanded that she withdraw the case or that Vinod would expose the video. He then offered her Rs 1 crore and a well-paying job if she would have sexual intercourse with him. He is believed to have touched her inappropriately as well. When she refused and tried to scream, he threatened to kill her," the CSI member claimed. Hema was distraught as she had allegedly been getting constant calls from Vinod to comply with his demands. On January 31, Hema allegedly went to the Church of South India hospital after she learnt that one of the Bishop's relatives was admitted to the hospital. "She came there to confront him. When he showed up, they had an argument and she accused him of making her life hell. She also told him that if she dies, it would be because of him and tried to consume insecticide. The security guards tried to stop her but she had already consumed some of the insecticide. So she was admitted and given treatment," the police added. The Shivajinagar Police then registered an FIR against Samuel and Vinod. However, this is not the first time that Bishop Samuel has been accused of sexual harassment. In January 2015, the Cubbon Park Police had registered a POCSO case against Bishop Samuel. He was accused of molesting several girls at a prominent all-girls' school located in the Central Business District in Bengaluru. In January 2018, a special POCSO court issued a non-bailable warrant against Bishop Samuel as he had not appeared for a single court hearing in the case. Bishop Samuel and Vinod Dasan have multiple FIRs registered against them across various police stations. However, they are not cases of sexual harassment or sexual assault.      On Saturday, several Dalit rights activists visited Home Minister MB Patil and demanded that Bishop Samuel and Vinod Dasan be arrested immediately. They also requested that Hema's case should be transferred to the CID. *Name changed to protect privacy

B'luru woman attempts suicide, accuses bishop of sexual harassment and intimidation

The alleged harassment came to light after the woman attempted suicide at CSI Hospital, where she is undergoing treatment.
A woman's attempt to take her own life on Saturday revealed a case of sexual harassment and intimidation by a bishop and a pastor of Bengaluru's Holy Trinity church. Bishop PK Samuel of the Holy Trinity Church has been accused of sexually harassing 27-year-old Hema*, while he and Pastor Vinod Dasan allegedly intimidated her after she refused to back down on six-year-old sexual harassment case she had been fighting against Pastor Vinod. Hema attempted to kill herself on January 31 following a verbal altercation with Bishop PK Samuel, said DCP East Harsha. Bishop TK Samuel has been booked under Sections 354 (using criminal force to assault a woman), 506 (criminal intimidation), 504, and 34 of the Indian Penal Code, according to DCP East Harsha. Pastor Vinod Dasan has been booked for criminal intimidation. Back in 2013, Hema filed a complaint at the Kothanur Police Station accusing Vinod of sexual harassment. That case is currently under trial. Last month, Vinod visited Hema’s mother in Bengaluru and told her to convince Hema to drop the case. He had also informed Hema's mother that that Bishop PK Samuel wanted to meet Hema and her husband, and counsel her on the case. On January 21, Hema and her husband arrived at Holy Trinity Church near Trinity Circle in Bengaluru, where they met both Samuel and Vinod. After they spoke, Vinod allegedly said that he wanted to speak to Hema’s husband, leaving Hema alone with Samuel. Samuel allegedly continued to pressurise Hema into withdrawing the case and allegedly offered to pay her Rs 1 crore as well as employment through the Diocese. However, Hema refused. At that point, he allegedly put his hand on her shoulder and misbehaved with her, DCP East Harsha added. Hema tried to shout for help, but Samuel allegedly told her that he would kill her if she screamed. Soon after, Hema left with her husband. Following the January 21 incident, Hema tried to file a complaint at the Halasuru Police Station against Samuel and Vinod, but the station did not record her police, a senior police official said. On January 31 around 1 am, while Hema was at CSI Hospital in Shivajinagar where her ailing mother is a patient, Samuel allegedly came to speak to her again at the hospital. He continued to try and persuade Hema to drop the case against Vinod, and allegedly threatened her life again. She and Samuel began to argue loudly, and Hema – who police believe had been contemplating suicide for a while – took out a bottle of insecticide and drank from it. Samuel called for security and Hema was taken for treatment immediately. She is currently stable and is undergoing treatment at the hospital. Soon after the incident occurred, the Shivajinagar Police arrived at the hospital. Once Hema's condition became stable, they took down her statement. TNM's attempts to reach the CSI, Karnataka Central Diocese went unanswered.

Don Ravi Poojary detained in Senegal, Kumaraswamy says it's due to his govt's efforts

Crime
Ravi Poojary was arrested by the West African Police in Senegal on January 19.
PTI
Indian intelligence officials reported on Thursday evening that they were notified about the detention of underworld don Ravi Poojary in Senegal. Poojary, who hails from Udupi district in Karnataka, had been on the Interpol's Red Corner Notice list for long and was finally detained by the West African police force as he was reportedly travelling from Burkina Faso. Indian intelligence officials are now coordinating with the West African Police to bring Ravi Poojary back to India. Speaking to the media on Friday, Karnataka Chief Minister Kumaraswamy said that his arrest was due to the coalition government's efforts. "When the coalition government was formed, we had instructed the state police to track down Ravi Poojary. The Karnataka State Police, through solid investigation tracked him down to Senegal. They got his call records and many other evidences to obtain his location. Once his location was confirmed, they managed to get him arrested with the help of the officials abroad. This is the coalition's success," Kumaraswamy said. The Chief Minister said that the police had received information about his alleged criminal activities in 2006. On December 31, 2018, intelligence officials had obtained information that Ravi Poojary was organising cricket tournaments in Africa and had obtained photographs to prove the same. "The state police immediately contacted the authorities there and informed them about his criminal activities. He was arrested on January 19. We are completing formalities so we can bring him back to India. The state police must be lauded for their efforts. The sleuth working for the central government too have worked hard for this," Kumaraswamy added. Ravi Poojary is wanted in scores of cases including making ransom and threat calls to Bollywood actors, politicians and other prominent personalities. He has been on the run for several years now. Ravi Poojary describes himself as a 'patriotic' underworld don. He was reportedly living out of Australia until about three years ago. He has made several threatening phone calls to prominent persons including activist Shehla Rashid, politician Jignesh Mevani and Bollywood singer Arijit Singh. Several politicians from Karnataka and Kerala have also claimed that they have received threat calls from the gangster. This includes Karnataka MP DK Suresh, Kerala Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala and Tanveer Sait among others. Ravi Poojary- the don born in Udupi He was born in Udupi and in his teenage years, shifted to Mumbai where he was working in Andheri. He shot to infamy for allegedly killing a gangster called Bala Zalte. He also worked under Chhota Rajan, a famed criminal from Mumbai, before parting ways and going alone in 2001. Poojary began his criminal career in Mumbai's Andheri area and soon became close to gangster Chotta Rajan and his cronies. Poojary is also considered to be one of Rajan's protegees.  In the mid-1990s, three of his men allegedly shot Om Prakash Kukreja of Kukreja Builders in his office. Eight years later, a Navi Mumbai-based builder, Suresh Wadhwa, is believed to have escaped a murder attempt by ducking under his office desk. Police believe that Poojary's men targeted Wadhwa.   He is believed to have moved to Dubai in the late 1990s and allegedly began extorting money from builders and hoteliers there. Chhota Rajan split with Dawood Ibrahim after the March 1993 serial blasts in Mumbai. At the time, Guru Satam and Ravi Poojary also broke away from the gang and sided with Rajan. Dawood Ibrahim then attempted to kill Rajan in Bangkok in 2000. Rajan was admitted to a hospital in a European country. At the time, the internal war in Chhota Rajan's faction had kicked off. A sharp shooter in Rajan's gang, Rohit Verma, allegedly caused Rajan to distrust Poojary. Rajan had allegedly suspected that several of his associates like Vinod Shetty and Mohan Kotian had turned on him. He had them killed in Navi Mumbai's Panvel area and Bengaluru respectively. Unable to convince Rajan that he had remained loyal, Poojary broke away from the gang and moved to Australia in 2006. In order to extract revenge, Ravi Poojary set up his own gang and identified himself as a warrior for the "Hindu cause". He is accused of killing Shahid Azmi, a lawyer representing the terror accused in the 1993 blasts case, and allegedly hatched a plot to eliminate Ehtesham Siddiqui, an accused in the 2011 blasts. By doing so, Poojary tried to establish himself as one who was "fighting the enemy" in Mangaluru, which had by then become a hotbed for communal politics.
