Though reports stated that CT Ravi was driving the car in an inebriated state, Karnataka BJP has claimed he was not behind the wheel.
tv9 screengrab
Two persons were killed near Kunigal bypass, around 70 km from Bengaluru, in the wee hours of Tuesday after being hit by an SUV, in which CT Ravi, BJP General Secretary and MLA from Chikkamagaluru, was travelling. A case has been registered in Kunigal Police Station under sections 279 (rash driving), 336 (Whoever does any act so rashly or negligently as to endanger human life) and 304A (death by negligence) of the Indian Penal Code. The MLA also sustained minor injuries. A policeman attached to Kunigal Police Station told TNM that the speeding SUV, which is believed to be driven by Ravi’s driver, met with the accident at Urkehalli bridge near Kunigal Byepass at 1.45 am. “Two cars - a Swift and Scorpio - were parked on the highway. Two men were shifting some goods between the two cars. It was at this moment that CT Ravi’s car hit both the vehicles and in the process, dragged both the men for around 50 m before screeching to a halt. Both of them died on the spot,” the policeman told TNM. When the police reached the accident spot, the driver had escaped. CT Ravi, who was also injured in the accident, is currently safe after he was admitted in Bengaluru’s Vikram Hospital for a brief while. He is still suffering from mild chest pain, a statement from BJP said. The BJP’s state media convenor, S Shantaram, in a statement refuted some media reports that claimed that CT Ravi was behind the wheels in an inebriated state. The statement said, “With deep regret and pain over the sad demise of the two persons in an accident between two cars, in which CT Ravi was travelling, we wish to clarify the following. After the accident happened near Kunigal, CT Ravi was present at the accident spot till the bodies were removed and the injured were shifted to hospital. He was not driving the car nor he has any drinking habit as reported.” He added, “He suffered chest injury which was attended by doctors and later discharged. He left the place after SI permitted him to do so and the car was taken over by police for further investigation. He still has mild chest pain and is under rest now.” Later in a statement, CT Ravi also claimed that he was not the one driving the vehicle.  "The incident, which happened in Kunigal last night, is an unfortunate one. I left for Chikmaggaluru around 9:30pm in the night. I was asleep in the car on the way. My driver Akash was behind the wheel. My gunman Raja Nayak was also present in the car. When the vehicle abruptly halted and the airbags opened up, I woke up and realised something happened. I had immense pain on my body and had scratches in my chest, And when I gained proper consciousness, I realised two people had died. I immediately called for an ambulance. I also tried to call the ambulance three to four times as I was not getting any. I also called the police station and then a sub-inspector, along with an ambulance, reached the spot. After all the procedures were completed, and the bodies were taken away, I came to Vikram Hospital to get treatment for my injuries," he explained  CT Ravi said that he was on his way to Chennai, but cancelled the event now. "I will meet the victims’ families. I hope god gives their families the courage to withstand their loss. I understand what the families must be going through. But I want to inform that this was not intentional," he added.

A 26-year-old man was beaten up by locals on Monday in Bengaluru’s Laggere area, near Rajagopal Nagar for harassing a minor girl. The man, identified as Naveen, was later caught by the Nandini Layout police and taken into custody for questioning after locals saw him misbehaving with the ninth standard girl. Naveen had allegedly been harassing and stalking her for months and offered her a brand new mobile phone in exchange for sexual favours. After a crowd took note of his actions on Monday, they gathered and began beating him after which they handed him over to the police. The girl’s mother has asked for Naveen to be let off with a strict warning and has decided against taking any further action against him. He had reportedly been stalking her for months and had been harassing her. The victim finally opened up to her parents about the months of harassment following which the girl’s mother followed her on Monday, as the girl was going to school, to see what Naveen would do. “The accused would often follow the girl. She had informed her parents about it, but they did not take it seriously,” a police official reportedly said. However on Monday, when the girl’s mother saw that he was indeed harassing her daughter, she confronted him near PC Nagar in Laggere, upon which he began arguing with her. She called for help from passersby, after he threatened her. A small crowd gathered and eventually began beating Naveen, following which the locals dragged him to the Nandini Layout police station. Officers at the station took a statement from the girl’s mother. Earlier in November, a 28-year-old man from Doddaballapura had killed a 16-year-old girl for refusing his advances. The man had been pestering her family to get her married to him after she turned 18. Following the murder, he was arrested by Doddaballapura police.

Coffee pulp water being let into River Cauvery, Kodagu residents allege: Probe on

Environment
The estate flagged by residents is located next to the Siddapura-Nelliyahadikeri bridge.
Residents of Siddapura in Kodagu district of Karnataka have alleged that coffee pulp waste is being let into the Cauvery River flowing through the town by estate owners in the area.  The estate flagged by residents is located next to the Siddapura-Nelliyahadikeri bridge. Residents in the area alleged that the waste water is being allowed to run into the river through the canal built to let rainwater run into the river.  "By law, estate owners are required to store coffee pulping waste and are not allowed to let it into the river. There are several coffee estates in the area and the issue has come to our notice and we are looking into it," a police official working in Siddapura told TNM.   According to environmentalists, coffee pulp waste can be hazardous to marine ecology. "It is irresponsible of the estate owner to let the waste run into the river since if it is untreated, it is quite hazardous for marine ecology. The officials should take necessary action over the issue," Col. Muthanna, President of the Coorg Wildlife Society told TNM.     The Siddapura Gram Panchayat has issued a notice to the estate owner to stop letting the pulping waste enter the river. "It has come to our notice and the Panchayat has issued a notice on February 15. The issue will be examined in detail and action will be taken on the estate owner if it is found that the waste is being let into the river," Vishwanath, Siddapura Gram Panchayat Development Officer said.  Both police and Gram Panchayat officials refused to identify the owner until a formal complaint is registered. The district officials also confirmed that this is not a common occurrence and that pollution control board officials routinely inspect coffee estates in the area.  The issue has also come to the notice of Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge, who directed Kodagu Deputy Commissioner Annies Kanmani to look into the issue.    . @DEOKodagu please look into this & do the needful. Thank you https://t.co/K29yM0jj3i — Priyank Kharge (@PriyankKharge) February 17, 2019

BBMP budget
Rs 19.80 crore has also been set aside to for women-centric welfare programmes, with Rs 10 lakh allocated to each of the 198 wards.
Every baby girl born in all 24 Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike maternity hospitals in the next financial year, starting from April 1, will be gifted with 15-year maturity bonds of Rs 1 lakh to assist them financially for their education or marriage. The BBMP made this announcement as part of the list of welfare programs for women as part of its 2019-20 budget with an outlay of more than Rs 10,000 crores. A sum of Rs 60 crore has been set aside for this purpose under ‘Mahalakshmi Yojane’ scheme. This scheme is a spin-off of last year’s pink baby scheme, which awarded Rs 5 lakh to the first girl born in every 24 of BBMP-run maternity hospitals. To promote self-employment of women, the BBMP has also allotted Rs 5 crore to provide four vehicles for each of the 28 assembly constituencies in the city to run mobile canteens. In addition to this, they will also provide a 50% subsidy on the running cost for mobile canteens units. The BBMP has also proposed to spend Rs 3 crore to launch two fully-equipped mobile testing buses to detect cancer at the initial stage for women living within the Palike’s limits. Rs 19.80 crore has been set aside for women-centric welfare programmes, with Rs 10 lakh for each of the 198 wards. The same was allotted as part of last year’s budget. The budget was presented by SP Hemalatha, the JD(S) corporator from Vrisahbhavathi Nagar and the chairperson of the Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance of the BBMP, as per convention. With both the Mayor and chairperson of the Standing Committee on Taxation and Finance of BBMP being women, it was expected that the Budget would have certain welfare initiatives. As compared to last year, there have been a few additions to the allocation of funds for the welfare of women. In 2018, other than the Rs 10 lakh allocation to every ward for women’s welfare, Rs 25 lakh was earmarked for dietary supplements for poor pregnant women. Rs 1.5 crore was allocated for providing health kits to postnatal mothers at BBMP hospitals.

‘Was bound to crash’: SC dismisses PIL seeking judicial probe into Mirage-2000 crash

A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna dismissed the PIL stating that a judicial inquiry cannot be conducted into such mishaps.
The Supreme Court on Monday dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a detailed probe into the crash of the Mirage 2000 aircraft at the HAL Airport in Bengaluru which took the lives of two pilots earlier this month. A bench comprising Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna stated that a judicial inquiry cannot be conducted into such mishaps. "Do you know Mirage 2000 is of which generation? We are now on the 6th generation. It is bound to crash," a bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Sanjiv Khanna asked petitioner-advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava according to a report to Deccan Herald. The advocate reportedly could not respond to the judge's question about the aircraft’s generation and the judges dismissed the petition. On February 1, a Mirage 2000 aircraft crashed during a sortie run at the HAL Airport premises killing Squadron Leaders Samir Abrol and Siddhartha Negi. The two pilots were part of the  Aircraft and Systems Testing Establishment (ASTE) attached to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The aircraft was recently upgraded by HAL and was being tested for customer acceptance when it crashed close to the eastern wall of the HAL airport at around 10:30 am.   A PIL was filed by advocate Alakh Alok Srivastava to conduct a thorough enquiry into the crash and to take correctional steps to ensure that similar crashes do not occur in the future. The petitioner had highlighted a media report stating that there have been 35 aircraft crashes (including helicopters) since 2015-16 in which 45 lives have been lost. Garima Abrol, the wife of Samir Abrol, also made a passionate appeal on social media demanding answers after her husband's demise. Sushant Abrol, Samir's brother, had also penned a moving poem in which he claimed that while his brother risked his life flying outdated machines, "the bureaucracy enjoyed its corrupt cheese and wine". Also read: 'I need answers': Wife of IAF pilot who died in Mirage-2000 crash pens moving note Speaking to TNM, Wing Commander (Retd.) GB Athri stated that the aircraft the pilots were flying was upgraded and that it was flight-worthy. “Mirages were inducted into the IAF in 1985. They were in service from the late 70s. Aeroplanes older than the Mirage are in use too, like the MIGs from the mid-60s,” Wing Commander (Retd.) Athri stated. He added that when such incidents take place, the Indian Air Force orders a court of enquiry which is subject to its own jurisdiction and nobody else has locus standi in this. “The Supreme Court has dismissed a probe by an external agency because in the course of the enquiry classified information would have been divulged to the external agency. But the enquiry of the IAF is on and it will be rectified over the course of time,” he said.
