Are women in Karnataka consuming excess iron? Doctors say iron deficiency a bigger issue

Health
Gynaecologists argue that iron deficiency is seen on a much larger scale than iron excess, with about 50% of women presenting with anaemia.

Iron deficiency anaemia affects more than 51% of women in the state of Karnataka alone, according to the National Family Health Survey 4 (NFHS 4). In an effort to combat the rising levels of iron deficiency anaemia in the country, the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) had in 2010 recommended that 21 mg per deciliter of iron was to be taken daily. However, a study published earlier this month in the Journal of Nutrition questions whether this may be leading to excess levels of iron in a small proportion of women in the state. Though a revised recommended daily allowance (RDA) of 15 mg was given by the ICMR, the new study argues against the standard. The first argument posed by the study is that the RDA suggested by the ICMR is based on the assumption that an individual is not getting enough iron in their diet. The study argues that blood loss due to menstruation or worm infestations is not taken into account when determining what the standard RDA should be. The study also looked into the existing iron supplementation methods and analysed the benefits of the same. Using this data, researchers from Bengaluru’s St John’s Research Institute were able to determine that some of the existing fortification and supplementation methods may actually put some women at the risk of having excess levels of iron in their body. These doctors stress the need for a more precise form of supplementation of iron to women according to their specific needs. Gynaecologists, however, disagree and argue that the study focuses on a rather negligible portion of the population. “In practice, iron deficiency is seen on a much larger scale than iron excess. That is why we routinely screen pregnant women for iron deficiency, to ensure that there are no complications due to that during childbirth,” explains Dr Hema Divakar, Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI) ambassador to the International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics. “Ten years ago, anywhere up to 80% of women were presenting with anaemia. That is, those with haemoglobin levels of less than 11, as per the World Health Organisation standard. Today, that has come down to maybe about 50% of women, but this is still a large section,” Dr Hema says, adding, “The risk of developing iron overload remains low, in practice, and we should not be highlighting it as a serious issue.”

Relief for Yeddyurappa: K’taka HC orders interim stay on ‘audiogate’ probe

Court
BJP Karnataka Chief BS Yeddyurappa had approached the Karnataka High Court seeking quashing of the FIR.

In a relief to former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa, the Kalburgi bench of the Karnataka High Court on Friday issued an interim stay order on investigation and further proceedings against him and others in the recent audiogate scandal. The High Court had on Wednesday reserved its order after Yeddyurappa and others sought to quash the FIR in the case. Yeddyurappa’s advisor and co-accused in the case, Marakal told TNM, “I just heard from our lawyer, the High Court has issued an interim stay in the case.” The development comes after Yeddyurappa along with his co-accused, had already obtained anticipatory bail from a special Bengaluru court on Saturday in connection with the case. Yeddyurappa, fellow party MLAs Shivanagouda, Preetham Gowda and Yeddyurappa’s advisor Marakal have been booked by Devdurga Police Station in Raichur district under the Prevention of Corruption Act. The FIR was registered on February 11 based on a complaint by Sharanagouda, son of Gurmitkal MLA Naganagouda Kandkur. A separate Special Investigative probe ordered by Karnataka Assembly Speaker Ramesh Kumar and formed by Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is also set to take place in the coming days. ‘Audiogate scandal’ On February 8, in the morning ahead of presenting the state budget, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy had called a press meet. In a sensational claim, the CM along with Sharangouda released an audio tape where Yeddyurappa is allegedly heard offering bribes to convince Sharangouda’s father to resign as an MLA as part of a bid to dislodge the coalition government. The conversation took place in Yadgir Circuit House, claimed Sharanagouda in the press conference. While Yeddyurappa had initially denied even meeting Sharanagouda in the Yadgir Circuit House in the early hours of February 8, he later admitted to being present there but claimed that the audio was doctored. While the BJP in the state has maintained the audio to be doctored, the CM himself has taken credit for the tape as his way of ensuring the stability of his government in the light of alleged poaching attempts by the BJP. The issue was discussed in the Lok Sabha as well with Congress leader Malikarjun Kharge and former PM HD Deve Gowda criticising the BJP on February 11. Congress MPs had also staged a protest on the same day holding placards in front of the Gandhi statue inside the Parliament complex against the alleged political “horse trading”.

Karnataka being run by two and a half CMs: Amit Shah

Politics
"While chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has self-proclaimed that he is a clerk CM, the Congress legislature party leader Siddaramaiah is the super CM," said Shah.
BJP President Amit Shah took a jibe at the Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress coalition government in Karnataka by commenting that the state was being run by two-and-a-half chief ministers. "The Karnataka government is run by two and a half CMs.  While chief minister H D Kumaraswamy has self-proclaimed that he is a clerk CM, the Congress legislature party leader Siddaramaiah is the super CM. Amidst them, the Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara is the half CM", Shah said on Thursday as per the Times of India. He was addressing the public in Devanahalli on the outskirts of Bengaluru.  He further questioned the commitment of people of Karnataka. "I’m surprised that Kumaraswamy says it is not the people of Karnataka, but Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi who made him the CM. I want to ask the CM - is your commitment to the people or to the feet of Congress leaders?” Shah said as per Deccan Herald.  Amit Shah and the BJP have been accused of trying to upstage the coalition government in the state. An audio tape released by CM Kumaraswamy earlier this month had made explosive allegations against him and the BJP.   The visit by Shah comes just months before the Lok Sabha elections in the country. The Congress has entered into a pre-poll alliance with the JD(S) in Karnataka and discussions to finalise the seat-sharing arrangement have begun. There is however discord between the two parties about the number of seats to be allotted to candidates from each party. In total, there are 28 Lok Sabha seats in Karnataka. This is also the only southern Indian state in which the Congress fared well in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and it is eager to retain its foothold in the state

Family of 4 dies in fire after car hits roadside toilet building in Hassan

Accident
The accident occurred in NH 75 that connects Mangaluru to Bengaluru, according to reports.
Four members of a family travelling in a car were killed after the car hit a roadside building and caught fire in Udayapura on the outskirts of Channarayapatna in Hassan district on Thursday, according to reports.  The accident occurred on NH 75 that connects Mangaluru to Bengaluru. The victims were reportedly identified as 52-year-old Vivek Nayak, his 45-year-old wife Reshma Nayak and their two children, Vinanthi and Vineet. They hail from Kundapura in Udupi district and were residing in Chikkabanavara in Bengaluru for the last 15 years, as per The New Indian Express. The victims were travelling from Bengaluru to Hassan when the tragic accident occurred. A case has been registered by Channarayanapatna Rural police station officials in connection with the accident. Vivek was working as the south Karnataka regional manager of Mumbai-based sports company Spykar. As per Times of India, the car rammed into an electric pole before hitting the wall of a toilet building sparking a fire from the engine of the vehicle.  People who were passing by rushed to help the family soon after the accident. But even though they tried to pull them out of the car, their efforts were in vain since all four had been killed on the spot. Police officials soon arrived and the bodies were shifted to the government hospital in Channarayanapata for post-mortem.  Residents of Channarayanapatna have protested for years about the rising number of accidents on the national highway passing through the town. Their demands were met with a response by National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) in 2017 when the authority proposed road safety measures, including service roads at a cost of Rs 240 crore.  The police, in fact, had filed an FIR against the NHAI citing negligence following an accident in the area in 2013.

K’taka Cong MLA JN Ganesh remanded to 14-day judicial custody in assault case

Assault
JN Ganesh had been absconding for a month after allegedly assaulting fellow MLA Anand Singh, before he was arrested by the police on Wednesday.
Karnataka Congress legislator JN Ganesh was remanded to 14-day judicial custody, a day after he was arrested in an assault case at a resort in the Ramanagara district, the police said on Thursday. "Principal Civil Judge Anita sent Ganesh to 14-day judicial custody when he was produced before her court at Ramanagara for allegedly assaulting his party's legislator Anand Singh at a resort on January 20," Ramanagara district Superintendent of Police Ramesh Bhanot told IANS. Ganesh, arrested by a state police from a hotel in Gujarat's Somnath town, was flown to Bengaluru from Ahmedabad earlier in the day. He had gone missing after attacking Singh. "As we have collected sufficient evidence and recorded statements of the accused and the complainant, resort officials and fellow legislators, we did not seek his police custody as preliminary inquiry has been completed," said Bhanot. The police registered an assault case against Ganesh on Singh's complaint under Section 307 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which relates to attempt to murder. Though Ganesh was to be sent to the district prison at Ramanagara, about 40 km from Bengaluru, the judge considered his plea to be lodged in the Bengaluru Central Jail. While Ganesh represents Kampli assembly segment in the Ballari district, Singh is from Vijayanagara segment. After the alleged assault, Singh was admitted to a private hospital in Bengaluru. He has been discharged from the hospital. Congress state President Dinesh Gundu Rao suspended Ganesh after the police registered an FIR against him on January 21. JN Ganesh had been absconding for a month after the incident before he was arrested by the police on Wednesday.  Ganesh was booked under sections 323 (Voluntarily causing hurt), 324 (Voluntarily causing hurt by dangerous weapons), 307 (Attempt to murder), 504 (intentional insult to breach peace) and 506 (Criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) by Bidadi Police Station.  With IANS inputs

Karnataka's bribe-return-gate: RTI activist wants JD(S) and BJP MLAs booked

Crime
Kolar MLA Srinivas Gowda had claimed he had returned Rs 5 cr of bribe money to the BJP.
Screengrab
Kolar MLA Srinivas Gowda of the JD(S) had recently claimed that he was given Rs 5 crore by BJP leaders. The MLA said that the Rs 5 crore was the first installment in a Rs 30 crore bribe deal promised by three BJP leaders including two MLAs who wanted him abandon the JD(S) and join BJP. “The BJP leaders had pressured me to quit as MLA and join the saffron party. BJP MLAs Vishwanath and Ashwathnarayana and former MLA CP Yogeeshwar brought a bag containing Rs 5 crore cash to my house in Bengaluru. They promised me Rs 25 crore more and a cabinet berth if I quit JD(S) and join the BJP," Kolar MLA Srinivas Gowda of the JDS was quoted by Deccan Herald, as saying on February 10. He had later told TNM that he had returned the money two days after getting it, on instructions by the Chief Minister. “When I informed Kumaraswamy about the offer from the BJP, he asked me not to make an issue out of it at that time. So, I remained silent. I will not succumb to pressure tactics by the BJP. All their efforts to poach MLAs from rival camps have failed,” Srinivas added. Though Srinivas had allegedly received the money two months ago, he revealed it only two days after HD Kumaraswamy released audio clips in which BS Yeddyurappa is purportedly “trapped” while offering bribe to Sharanagouda, son of Gurmitkal MLA Naganagouda Kandkur. While Yeddyurappa and other co-accused in the audiogate row have already been booked by Raichur police and a separate special probe will be carried out as ordered by the Assembly Speaker, no legal action has been taken in Srinivas' case. Now, RTI activist TJ Abraham has filed a complaint with the Anti-Corruption Bureau in Bengaluru. In his complaint, Abraham said that the very act of accepting the bribe attracts provisions of Prevention of Corruption Act along with sections of Prevention of Money Laundering Act against Srinivas, Vishwanath, Ashwath Narayana and Yogeshwar. Abraham further alleged that the Rs 5 crore that Srinivas returned was arranged by CM Kumaraswamy as the original sum was already invested or spent. For this, Abraham has sought probe under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, Prevention of Corruption Act and intentional ommission of information of offence by person bound to inform as contemplated under the Indian Penal Code. Abraham told TNM, “The DySP assured me he will look into the complaint. I will follow up in the coming days to check if an FIR is being registered or not. I want the ACB to take action under the Prevention of Corruption Act and other charges in of the IPC.” He added, “For charges under Prevention of Money Laundering Act, I am going to Delhi next week to lodge a complaint with the CBI as the ACB has no powers to act on this.

Just 400m but Bengaluru’s Museum Cross Road to take 3 more months to develop

Infrastructure
Although construction on Museum Cross Road began in November 2018, the work is nowhere close to being complete, inconveniencing residents and establishments.
Museum Cross Road in Bengaluru
The deafening noise of an earth-mover cuts through the blanket of dust enveloping Museum Cross Road. Dug-up roads, iron rods sticking out from the ground, pile-up of huge pipes, sand and stones welcome commuters on one of Bengaluru's busiest roads which connects Museum Road and MG Road at the heart of the city.  Travelling on the road has turned out to be an obstacle course for people working in the area in the last three months, sometimes quite literally. This is due to the Bengaluru Bruhat Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) taking up works to develop the road in November 2018. The BBMP is relaying the road as part of its TenderSURE project in 20 major roads. Even though the stretch of road where construction works have been taken up is 400 metres, a six-month deadline has been set for the completion of the project. According to the work order issued by BBMP, Museum Cross Road is being developed at a cost of Rs 4.34 crore. The contractor responsible for the construction believes that the project is on course to be completed within its target of six months. "There is no delay since the time to complete the project is six months. We have begun work in November so still we have three months left. If things go according to plan, we will finish work by the end of May," says an official working with the contractor who did not wish to be named. The official further stated that they are tasked with coordinating with different civic bodies to ensure the construction of the road, a process that is cumbersome and time consuming. "This is not an ordinary road since there are live power lines underneath and there are drainage and sewer lines to take note of as well. It is not just the BBMP but there are multiple agencies working to construct the road. We have to ensure that the alignment is right to ensure there is no flooding during monsoon," the official added.  BBMP officials reiterated the claim that the construction works on the road was on track to be completed in the stipulated time-frame and rejected suggestions that the time taken is too long. Speaking to TNM, Basavaraj Kabade,Basavaraj Kabade, Executive Engineer, Project Central, claimed the work will be completed by end of May in spite of the complexities involved. "This will be one of the best roads in the city just like Church Street. There is a lot of work that has to be done both underneath and above the ground. We have to fix the utility lines - we are doing everything from water supply, sewer lines, OFC ducting, power ducting,” Basavaraj told TNM.  Is the road closed for traffic? He also revealed that despite the request to close traffic on the road, it has been kept open till 10 am since there is a school and post-office nearby. The road works are being carried out during the day while other works related to drainage and sewer are being carried out in the night.  In January, building owners on the road received notices stating that the road will be closed for construction works. However, a conflicting notice stating that the road will only be partially closed was sent out two weeks ago before barriers were set up on the road's entry to Museum Road to stop vehicles from entering.  Currently, the entry into the road from the Church Street side is still open and many two-wheelers were seen treading carefully on the dug-up road on Thursday.     The development of the road comes less than a year after Church Street, which is perpendicular to this road, was revamped. The process of revamping Church Street took more than a year during which time four deadlines were missed after contractors realised that the street was built on a network of drains installed by the British.  Read: Granite cobblestones, LED Street lights: Bengaluru's Church Street finally open Residents, employees inconvenienced The construction works has inconvenienced people working in and around the area so much that some have begun parking their vehicles at UB City, which is around 1.3 km away. "We have begun parking our vehicles either at the State Bank of India on Museum Road or in UB City. Some have stopped travelling by private vehicles altogether," says a group of employees working at United Breweries, which has an office on this road.  The entire Museum road has been dug up from last three months. No vehicles can enter inside. Does anyone know whats happening? @WeAreBangalore pic.twitter.com/OiuhEoCeQd — Sudhakar Rao (@sudhakar10) February 20, 2019 BBMP is looking for oil on Museum road. This road was half decent, until our friends decided to mine it https://t.co/bcyeibWNHb — Danish Sait (@DanishSait) February 20, 2019 Businesses claim noticeable drop in customers It has also affected businesses operating on the road since customers now have to walk the last few metres to reach establishments located on the road. "Our business has been affected noticeably ever since the works to revamp Church Street was taken up in 2017. Six months after the road was built, construction on Museum Cross Road was taken up. Our customers often have to walk a few hundred metres to reach here and often, they prefer to go to a different restaurant or bar nearby," says a manager of a bar and restaurant located on the road.    Residents in the area however are concerned that if the construction works are not completed within the stipulated deadline of May 2019, then the condition of the road could be worsened by rain in the monsoon season. This would further compound the problems of thousands of people using the road on a daily basis. With inputs from Soumya Chatterjee.
