JD(S) will contest 10 seats in LS polls: Deve Gowda after meeting with Rahul Gandhi

According to reports, JD(S) agreed to bring down the number of seats from 12 to 10 after the Congress insisted they will not give up their current seats.

Former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda on Wednesday said that the party has agreed to lower their demand for 12 Lok Sabha seats to 10 seats in Karnataka as part of the pre-poll arrangement with their alliance, the Congress. This statement comes after JD(S) met with Congress President Rahul Gandhi in New Delhi on seat-sharing for the upcoming Lok Sabha elections. “In Karnataka, we have a coalition with the Congress. While Congress is a national party, mine is a regional party. Earlier, I had demanded 12 seats, but today I have asked National President Rahul Gandhi for 10 seats, in the presence of the Congress National General Secretary KK Venugopal. Venugopal and Danish Ali [Secretary General of JD(S)] will discuss the issue about the constituencies and ultimately, the final decision will be taken by Rahul Gandhi,” Deve Gowda told the media. A source in the Congress party, however, said that a final decision in the seat-sharing is yet to be taken. According to reports, the JD(S) agreed to bring down the number of seats after the Congress maintained that they will not give up any of the seats they currently hold. The bone of contention between the two parties is the Tumkuru and Chikkaballapura seats held by the Congress. JD(S) has insisted that the party wants to field their candidate from the two constituencies.   Congress leaders have previously insisted that the JD(S) has strong candidates in only five or six constituencies in the state. “If the Congress does not give JD(S) tickets in Tumakuru, Chikkaballapura and Mysuru-Kodagu, then the latter will withdraw support to the Congress and indirectly support the BJP,” the Congress source told TNM. According to a source in the JD(S0 party, “Although the two parties have agreed on 10 seats for JDS, they have not agreed on the specific constituencies from where each party will contest. The JD(S) sought 10 seats in all, with nine from south Karnataka and one more from Kodagu.” In the 2014 General Assembly Elections, the BJP had won 16 seats, the Congress 10 and the JD-S had won two. Shortly after Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy won the floor test following the state elections in Karnataka last year, the top brass of the Congress and the JD(S) had decided to forge a pre-poll alliance for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Rebel Congress MLA Umesh Jadhav joins BJP, to contest against Kharge?

Umesh Jadhav, the Karnataka MLA who submitted his resignation to the Assembly Speaker on Monday, joined the BJP on Wednesday at a rally in Kalaburagi.“I am very happy and very proud to be part of BJP. They have welcomed me very well. I beg you to give me a chance because a nationalist party and Modi have gained world renown,” Umesh reportedly said. He joined the party at the rally being addressed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Kalaburagi. Umesh joined the party in the presence of the BJP’s Karnataka chief BS Yeddyurappa. Umesh, a two-time MLA from Chincholi in Kalaburagi district, submitted his resignation to Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar on March 4. According to political observers, Umesh is likely to contest against Congress heavyweight Mallikarjun Kharge, the current leader of the party in Lok Sabha, from Gulbarga in the upcoming Lok Sabha polls. Mallikarjun Kharge has won the Assembly elections nine times in a row and has been the MP for two terms now. Umesh has been disgruntled with Mallikarjun Kharge and his son Priyank as he did not get inducted into the cabinet whereas Priyank, a first-time MLA, did. In the 2018 election, he did not get a ministerial position once again. "The Congress has done everything it could with Jadhav. He was power hungry and has been dissenting against the party's leadership. He is an opportunist. We are disappointed with him," Congress state unit president Dinesh Gundu Rao told the media when Umesh submitted his resignation. Umesh was one of the four MLAs whom the Congress top brass wanted to be disqualified for not following the party whip in attending the Budget session of the state Assembly. On Feb 11, a petition was submitted by Congress Legislature Party leader Siddaramaiah, Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara and Dinesh Gundu Rao to the Speaker under the anti-defection law. In a tweet on Tuesday, Siddaramaiah tweeted that Umesh’s resignation cannot be accepted. “We had already petitioned to disqualify 4 MLAs, including Jadav, as per anti-defection law for involving in anti-party activities. Resignation cannot be accepted without deciding our petition. Let us leave it to the speaker to decide,” he tweeted. Bengaluru doctors perform ‘bloodless’ open heart surgery on patient

Bibiche Tshibola Makolo, a 39-year-old woman from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), came to Fortis Hospital in Bengaluru in February, looking for a doctor who could perform an open heart surgery that she required. The challenge? Bibiche belongs to the Jehovah’s Witness faith, which does not allow for followers to undergo blood transfusions. Considering all possibilities, doctors ultimately decided to take her up for a ‘bloodless surgery’. “We’ve done bloodless surgeries several times before and are familiar with the process. Many patients of this faith come to us and require us to take them up for bloodless surgeries,” says Dr Murali Chakravarthy, Director, Department of Anaesthesia, Fortis Hospital, Bengaluru. He further went on to explain that several patients who come from this particular religious background often seek out doctors experienced with bloodless surgeries so that they are able to avail treatment while holding onto their faith. “We must honour the wishes of patients wherever possible, regardless of any personal beliefs we may harbour. And in this case, it is important to note that bloodless surgeries may have less risk than the traditional method,” adds the doctor. So what exactly is a ‘bloodless’ surgery? In the early 1900s, Adolf Lorenz, an orthopaedic surgeon from Vienna, Austria, began conducting ‘dry surgeries’ in which he would not cut into the skin or tissue of patients, after it was found that he was allergic to carbolic acid, a compound that was excessively utilised in operating rooms. As a result, he was limited to performing procedures which were non-invasive in nature, earning him the nickname ‘The Bloodless Surgeon of Vienna.’ While the modern-day meaning of a bloodless surgery has changed since the time of Lorenz, and encompasses both invasive and non-invasive surgical techniques today, it does not refer to a procedure in which no blood is involved. A bloodless procedure today refers to one in which any allogeneic blood (blood which comes from a genetically non-identical donor) is not used. Today, a bloodless surgery refers to one in which a patient is not given any blood transfusion prior to or during the surgery. Instead, several alternative measures are used to ensure that a patient’s haemoglobin levels are normal before the surgery, where adequate intravenous (IV) fluids are given during the surgery to compensate for any fluid volume loss. “Often, transfusions can pose certain risks for patients, especially ones going in for major surgeries. What needs to be kept in mind is that a blood transfusion is just like any other transplant. It is not just a simple IV fluid that is given. There are chances of any antigen-antibody, that is graft versus host, reactions occurring,” explains Dr Murali, referring to the possible outcome of allergic reactions in a blood transfusion. “A biological signature of someone else remains in your body, this is something that we cannot ignore. There is enough medical evidence to show that a blood transfusion is not always needed for a patient.”  Bibiche’s open heart surgery In the case of Bibiche, she had to undergo an open heart surgery for a valve repair due to the extensively restrictive cardiomyopathy she was diagnosed with. Cardiomyopathy can occur due to one of several reasons, but the general pathology is that the heart muscle becomes enlarged and rigid. In some cases, especially if it has been a chronic issue, there might even be a chance that some of the muscle is slowly replaced with scar tissue, as a result of the damage to the muscle. A team of doctors, led by Dr Vivek Jawali, Chief Cardiothoracic and Vascular Surgeon, as well as Chairman of the Department of Cardiovascular Sciences at Fortis Hospitals in Bengaluru, and Dr Murali Chakravarthy, Director of the Department of Anaesthesia at the same hospital, took Bibiche up for surgery. Following the procedure, she was started on several medications to help maintain her haemoglobin levels, among other things. A month after the surgery, she is back at home in DRC and is doing well.

Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Wednesday courted controversy when he took a jibe at the radical right. Siddaramaiah, who was at an event to inaugurate the rejuvenation of a lake in Bagalkot's Badami, said that he was "scared of people who wear tilaks." Speaking to the people of Badami, Siddaramaiah was instructing the tahsildar and local officials to complete the rejuvenation of Agasthya Lake as soon as possible. "Who is the contractor?" Siddaramaiah is heard saying. When the officials point out the contractor among the crowd, Siddaramaiah asked him to complete the work on time. The contractor was wearing a tilak, which the former Chief Minister noticed and said, "You know those people who wear tilaks (referring to members of Hindutva outfits)? I am scared of people who wear tilaks." K'taka prof forced to kneel by ABVP files police complaint, FIR against six persons

Sandeep Wathar, the professor forced kneel and apologise by ABVP workers for a social media post he had written about recent the Indo-Pak tensions, filed a police complaint against them on March 3. Sandeep is an assistant professor at Dr PG Halakatti Engineering College and Technology in Vijayapura in north Karnataka. The APMC Police in Vijayapura town have registered an FIR against six people in connection with the case. Sachin Bagewadi, Kamlesh Sahukar, Vinod Manivaddar, Basavaraj Lagali, Sachin Kolur and Santhosh Choudhari are the accused students, who are also members of Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, a right-wing youth outfit.  APMC police have booked the six persons under sections 143 (punishment for unlawful assembly), 147 (punishment for rioting), 341 (punishment for wrongful restraint), 447 (punishment for criminal trespass), 290 (punishment for public nuisance), 504 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation), 149 (unlawful assembly with common objective) of the Indian Penal Code.  Speaking to TNM, Sandeep says that he is currently worried about his reputation at his workplace and his social circles. "There are people who believe that I am an anti-national and that is what I am worried about more than the police probe. The police will conduct an investigation and it will take time to see whether anyone will be punished. But my reputation has been maligned. How am I going to get that back?"    Assistant Professor Sandeep, who was on a two-day leave, returned to college on Tuesday. The college, however, has constituted a five-member committee to determine whether legal action must be taken against him.  According to an official with the Dr PG Halakatti Engineering College and Technology, the committee was constituted after immense pressure from the college students, who were members of the ABVP. "The committee was constituted and the professor in question will be summoned before the committee for deposition. We are looking to see whether he has made any comments on social media which can be constituted as anti-national. We are in touch with our legal team to see whether suspending him or firing him would constitute as wrongful termination. The college management will take action based on the committee's report," the senior official said.

Family of five killed after SUV jumps divider and rams bus in K'taka's Hassan

A couple and their three children were killed after the SUV they were travelling in jumped a median and hit a KSRTC Volvo bus coming from the opposite direction at Entaganahalli village on Hassan Road near Nelamangala. The victims have been identified as 43-year-old Elumalai and his wife Kamala (35), and their children – their two sons Kiran (14) and Giridhar (13) and their daughter Geetha (10). Elumalai worked as a masonry contractor while his wife worked as a sanitation worker. They were residents of Nayandanahalli in Bengaluru. Nelamangala traffic police said that the SUV was speeding towards Bengaluru from Hassan when at around 11 pm, Elumalai lost control of the vehicle. The SUV jumped over the road divider and entered the opposite lane and collided into a bus which was headed to Manipal. The bus driver swerved to the left to try and avoid the SUV but ended up ramming into a tree. 10 passengers, including the bus driver, Bhimrao Chavan, have sustained injuries, reported The Hindu, and were taken to a hospital by Nelamangala traffic police. Elumalai and his family had travelled to Dakshina Kannada district for a pilgrimage. They were returning to Bengaluru when the accident occurred. Visuals of the accident show heavy damage to the SUV as well as the bus. “KSRTC officials arranged for an alternative bus for the passengers of the bus that was hit. We have seized the SUV and are waiting for the post-mortem report,” said a police officer. Traffic on the road was disrupted for some time after the incident as the debris was cleared. There have been a number of accidents in Hassan district, especially on the national highway connecting Bengaluru and Mangaluru. Residents have, over the years, held several protests asking civic officials to take measures for road safety.

Relief for Sarjapur residents: 3 new bus routes to connect railway stations, IT parks

In a big relief for residents in and around Sarjapur Road in Bengaluru, BMTC has launched three new bus routes along the IT corridor. Two routes connect Electronic City's Wipro Campus and neighbourhoods like Kasavanahalli, Doddakannalli, Haralur and HSR Layout while the third route runs in a loop to Carmelaram Railway Station covering Doddakannalli, Kadubisanahalli, Bellandur Gate and Kaikondrahalli.  The areas are marked by several tech parks and a sizeable number of IT employees living there, and the administration hopes that the introduction of bus routes will reduce traffic congestion in the area.  The service was flagged off at a function by Shantinagar MLA NA Harris, MLC Rizwan Arshad and Bellandur corporator Asha Suresh.  This comes after a long demand from residents and Resident Welfare Associations (RWA) along Sarjapur Road asking for BMTC bus services in these areas.  In October 2018, thousands of people had participated in a silent protest demanding better public transport in the Bellandur area, as part of the 'Save Bellandur' campaign.  On February 22, MLC Rizwan Arshad wrote to MLA NA Harris about the demand and the bus routes were added within weeks. "We at the BMTC Headquarters accepted the request from Rizwan Arshad to add 4 new bus routes to aid the ITBT sector. Buses to the new routes will ply from the 28th of Feb 2019.
