'Cong trying to gain political mileage’: BSY rubbishes Rs 1800 cr bribe allegation

Lok Sabha 2019
On Friday afternoon, the Congress demanded a Lokpal investigation and called Yeddyurappa a “habitual offender”.
File image
Ex-Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa on Friday denied all allegations made by a report on The Caravan magazine and by the Congress that he paid bribes to the tune of Rs 1,800 crore in 2009.  The BJP state president claimed this was a malicious attempt by the Congress to counter the popularity of PM Narendra Modi, with less than a month to go for the Lok Sabha polls. He also claimed that all these allegations had been raised before and were already found to be baseless by the Income Tax Department. “Congress party and its leaders are bankrupt of issues and ideas. They don't have any development issues to discuss in public. Basically, they are frustrated with the growing popularity of the Prime Minister Narendra Modiji and BJP. Congress leaders have realised that their defeat in the 2019 elections is imminent,” he told reporters at a hurriedly called press conference on Friday. He added, “They have lost the battle before it began. To be frank, all the issues being raised by Congress including one raised by them today about alleged payment of crores of rupees have been already inquired and it was found that the documents are fake. IT department officials have already probed the issue to find that the documents and signatures and handwritten notes are forged. Congress leaders who are apt in carrying out all these atrocious and malicious campaigns have planted this story in the media to gain political mileage in the coming elections. Above all, issues raised by the Congress leaders are irrelevant and false. The Issue is a closed chapter.”  On Friday afternoon, the Congress demanded a Lokpal investigation and called Yeddyurappa a “habitual offender”. This comes just hours after the Congress national spokesperson Randeep Surjewala held an explosive press conference in New Delhi, attacking Yeddyurappa for allegedly paying  Rs 1,800 crore to BJP national leaders, including Finance Minister Arun Jaitley.

Ola's license suspended in Bengaluru for the next six months by RTO

Transport
The official notice said that the suspension order came after the company ran illegal bike taxis.
App-based cab aggregator Ola has been suspended from operating in Bengaluru for the next six months by the Regional Transport Office for violating its license conditions, an official notice said. The action is being taken after the cab aggregator operated illegal bike taxis, as per the Karnataka On Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules 2016. According to the suspension order, Ola cannot run its aggregator service for any vehicles including cars, autos and bikes in the city for 6 months. Currently, bike taxis in Karnataka are illegal due to lack of policy framework and is also strongly opposed by the  Ola TaxiForSure and Uber Drivers’ Association in fear of loss of business.  Recently, Ola and other cab aggregators which operate bike taxis have been facing the heat from the Transport Department. In February, transport officials seized close to 500 such bike taxis for operating illegally. Ola and Rapido, a bike taxi aggregator service, have been asked to stop services immediately. However, it was unclear whether Ola and Rapido would appeal against the order in court.  "The order was issued on March 18 but it was communicated to Ola only today (Friday). They will have to submit their license to the RTO within three days of receiving the order. Booking on Ola from Friday is illegal," the Joint Commissioner of Transport told TNM. The official notice said that the suspension order was given as the company’s reply to the RTO’s notice was unsatisfactory. "Earlier this year, Transport Department officials had seized several bikes which were operating as bike taxis for Ola. The officials probed the case and submitted a report to the Transport Commissioner. According to section 11 (1) The Karnataka On Demand Transportation Technology Aggregators Rules 2016, the Transport Department can decide to cancel the license of the cab aggregator as there is a violation of rules,” an extract of the notice read. “Prior to this, a notice must be sent to the company in question. Hence on February 15, 2019, the Transport Department had sent Ola a notice, asking the company to respond to the findings of the probe. Ola sent its reply on March 3, 2019. As the company's reply was not satisfactory and did not provide any evidence which proved it did not violate norms, the Transport Department, as on March 18, 2019 has decided to suspend the license of Ola for a period of six months. Ola will have to submit the original copy of the license within three days of receiving a copy of this order," the notice added. A statement from Ola is awaited. The story will be updated as soon as Ola responds. The Karnataka Auto and Taxi Federation President Tanveer Pasha said in a statement, “Ola and Rapido companies were operating two-wheeler cab services without proper permissions required from RTO. We from OTU and Karnataka Auto and Taxi Federation had brought this to the notice of the Transport Department. Based on our complaint about the same the Transport Department has issued a notice to the concerned companies. On no response from the companies it has issued a notice to submit its aggregator license in the next 3 days or else they would take the legal actions against the companies. Also, the Transport Department is taking action against Rapido Company."

Explainer: The alleged Rs 1800 crore payments by BS Yeddyurappa to top BJP leaders

Controversy
The Caravan story is largely based on the entries in a Karnataka Legislator's Diary from 2009 and notings by an unnamed senior Income Tax officer to Arun Jaitley.
PTI
Former Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yeddyurappa paid a total amount of Rs 1,800 crore to the BJP’s central committee – 3 current Union Ministers and two senior BJP leaders –  as well as judges and advocates, and noted it in a diary, a report by The Caravan states. The allegations were repeated by the Congress party which said the payments were made in 2009 to both national leaders and local leaders to ensure that Yeddyurappa was made the Chief Minister. According to the diary entries, an additional Rs 150 crore was paid to Karnataka legislators by his Tourism Minister and mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy. These diary entries have reportedly been in the possession of the Income Tax Department since 2017. The documents were seized by the I-T department during raids conducted on Congress leader and current Water Resources Minister DK Shivakumar’s residence.    What the diary entries state The Caravan story is largely based on the entries in a Karnataka Legislator's Diary from 2009 and notings by an unnamed senior Income Tax officer to Arun Jaitley. The diary, according to the IT officer, is supposed to have been written sometime between December 2012 and January 2014. This was a time when Yeddyurappa had broken away from the BJP and formed his own party called the Karnataka Janata Paksha. Though the Caravan broke the story, these diary notes were released by the Congress later, to all media houses. The diary entries, all in Kannada, are in the form of journal entries and every page bears a signature, which reads BS Yeddyurappa. The BJP has said that the signature and the handwriting in the diary does not match that of Yeddyurappa's.  The diary makes mention of many alleged payments: This includes- Rs 1,000 crore to the BJP Central Committee, Rs 150 crore each to finance minister Arun Jaitley and the transport minister Nitin Gadkari, Rs 100 crore to Union Home Minister Rajnath Singh and Rs 50 crore each to BJP stalwart LK Advani and senior party leader Murli Manohar Joshi. In addition to these, the entry notes that Yeddyurappa paid Rs 10 crore for “Gadkari’s son’s marriage”. Rs 250 crores were also allegedly paid to judges and advocates, who have not been named. The payment to the advocates reportedly is legal fees. In one of the entries, Yeddyurappa has written, “Gali Janardhana Reddy is the key person to make me CM,” and has added his own signature below the statement. The next line mentions the details of legislators to whom money was given by Janardhan Reddy and this includes payments of around Rs 150 crores given to eight Karnataka leaders including PM Narendraswamy, Anand Asnotikar Vasant and Balachandra Laxmanrao Jarakiholi. Another diary entry mentions amounts allegedly received by BS Yeddyurappa. According to the report, Yeddyurappa received an amount of Rs 2,690 crore from various donors. How the documents reached DK Shivakumar In order to understand how the diary ended up in DK Shivakumar’s possession, one has to go back to February 25, 2017. On this day, Congress leader HM Revanna held a press conference in Bengaluru and announced that they were in possession of a diary, which showed that BS Yeddyurappa had paid thousands of crores of kickbacks to the high command in New Delhi. Although Revanna had claimed to release copies of the diary to the media, it never materialised. Parallelly, a fight broke out between two Congress leaders Yeddyurappa and BJP MLA from Shivamogga KS Eshwarappa. On May 11, 2018, a complaint was filed by Eashwarappa's assistant Vinay with the Bengaluru Police Commissioner alleging that Yeddyurappa’s PA NR Santosh had tried to abduct and assault him. In July last year, a BJP leader from the party’s youth wing – Rajendra Urs had alleged that the abduction attempt on Eshwarappa’s PA was made by Yeddyurappa’s PA in order to obtain certain incriminating information about Eashwarappa that Vinay had in his possession. According to The Caravan report, a senior IT official stated that during this episode when the diary was stolen from Yeddyurappa’s possession, it landed up in the hands of Congress leader DK Shivakumar. When DK Shivakumar was raided by the IT department, this diary too was seized. It must also be noted that when Yeddyurappa’s PA was accused of abducting Vinay, Yeddyurappa had stayed away from the police probe and not helped his close confidante. Who is the ‘key person who could make Yeddyurappa CM’? Gali Janardhana Reddy is one of the richest politicians in Karnataka. There are 63 cases against Janardhana Reddy, some of his family members and associates in both Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh. Out of these, 10 cases are concerning the Belekeri port, the chargesheet hasn't been filed in some cases as the investigation is still going on. Twenty-eight of these cases are with the CBI in which chargesheet has been filed in almost all. In 2001, Janardhana Reddy bought the Obalapuram Mining Corporation (OMC) for Rs 5 crore. When the prices of iron ore skyrocketed in 2002, luck favoured Reddy and he made huge profits.

Prajwal Revanna files nomination from Hassan, seat of grandfather Deve Gowda

Lok Sabha 2019
Along with Deve Gowda and HD Revanna, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress MLC Gopalswamy were also present at the DC's office while handing over the nomination papers.
It was around the auspicious time of 12:05 pm that Prajwal Revanna, grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, submitted his nomination papers as the JD(S) candidate from Hassan constituency in the Lok Sabha elections.    The filing of the nominations was a busy day for the Revanna family including Prajwal's father and Karnataka PWD Minister HD Revanna. The family visited a number of temples beginning with the Lakshmi Narasimhaswamy temple in Holenarasipura.    Prajwal, Revanna and Bhavani Revanna (Prajwal's mother and Zilla Parishad member), then visited the Raghavendraswamy temple and Anjaneya temple which are situated facing each other nearby. The family also visited the Eshwar temple at Haradanahalli and the Ranganatha Swamy temple at Mavinakere.    It was here that Prajwal signed his nomination papers before embarking on a procession to the Deputy Commissioner's (DC) office where he handed over the papers at around 12:45 pm.    Along with Deve Gowda and HD Revanna, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy and Congress MLC Gopalswamy were also present at the DC's office while the nomination papers were handed over. The procession was also witnessed by thousands of supporters of the party and Prajwal was showered with flowers all through the route,   The nomination also marked a 'passing of the torch' moment as incumbent MP Deve Gowda relinquished his position as the MP of the constituency. Deve Gowda had made the constituency his bastion by winning three elections in a row since 2004. He had earlier been elected from the constituency in 1991 and 1998 while he was defeated in 1999.    The decision to hand the ticket to Prajwal was announced on March 13 in a public meeting attended by the family. News channels aired visuals of all three members of the family in tears during the ceremony. However, when Prajwal was questioned about dynasty politics, he retorted angrily by asking, "What about Shivamogga? Tell me who is contesting from there and then we will discuss," he told a reporter.    Prajwal Revanna will contest against Congress rebel A Manju who joined the BJP recently. Manju contested and lost against Deve Gowda in the 2014 Lok Sabha elections and is considered close to Siddaramaiah. Manju, who expected the Congress to pick him as the candidate from Hassan was unhappy when the seat was given to the JD(S) and Prajwal Revanna was preferred instead of Deve Gowda. He was earlier with the BJP before joining the Congress and rose to become a minister in the Siddaramaiah-led Congress government.

A mother held her daughter under the Dharwad building debris for over 24 hrs

Lok Sabha 2019
While 36-year-old Prema survived, her 8-year-old daughter Divya passed away in the collapse, which has so far claimed 15 lives.
For over 36 hours Prema Unakal, a 36-year-old marketing representative was trapped with her eight-year-old daughter Divya under the debris after an under-construction building collapsed in Dharwad. The collapse, which occurred on Tuesday, has claimed 15 lives so far.  Prema, an employee with Vestige Marketing Pvt Ltd, had an office in the building. On March 19 she had taken her daughter to work as the little girl had summer vacation and could not be left at home. Prema's aunt Siddavva told TNM that as soon as the building collapsed, Prema fell unconscious and woke up a while later. She soon began looking for her daughter, whose hands were visible from underneath a pillar. “The debris had fallen on her (Prema's) body and not on her head. It took her 45 minutes to get the debris off her. She then began pushing the pillar and after a few hours, she managed to free her daughter,” the aunt says.  Minutes after Prema freed her daughter, another pillar, which was resting precariously on the debris collapsed and fell on the little girl. Prema once again took hours to free her daughter. By then the little girl was screaming with pain. Prema held on to her daughter for over 24 hours under the debris, the aunt says.  “She held her daughter and tried to escape. Prema and her daughter were stuck between pillars and the debris. For 36 hours they did not have any food and water and in a parched state, Prema tried to stay awake to ensure that Divya was also alive,” Siddavva adds. By midnight on March 20, Divya had stopped crying, and both mother and daughter fell unconscious. On the afternoon of March 20, Prema woke up to the noise of the earth movers and the rescue operations being carried out by the NDRF team. “She began screaming for help. When the rescue team reached her, she insisted that Divya be rescued first but the team pulled her out and rushed her to the hospital. Divya was dead when her body was found,” Sidavva adds. Sidavva says that Prema has sustained grievous injuries on her arms, legs and torso and is currently unable to move. “She would fall in and out of sleep and whenever she woke, she would call out for Divya for a while. She would cry out for her and then fall back into sleep. She held her daughter for over 24 hours and when she was being taken to the hospital, she kept telling the people in the ambulance that her daughter is alive. We have not yet told her that Divya has passed away,” Sidavva says. The Dharwad Suburban Police arrested Vivek Pawar, the architect, from a lodge in Kolhapur past midnight on Friday. The owners of the building Ravi Basavaraj Sabarad, Basavaraj D Nigadi, Gangappa S Shintri and Mahabaleshwar Puradagudi surrendered to the police late on Thursday night. They will be produced before a magistrate on Friday.

Death toll in Dharwad building collapse rises to 15: Cops arrest owners, architect

Lok Sabha 2019
Four owners, including the father-in-law of a former Congress MLA too has been arrested.
Four days after an under construction building collapsed in Dharwad, the death toll has risen to 15. On Friday, a few minutes past midnight, the team investigating the case tracked down and arrested the architect of the building -- Vivek Pawar- from a lodge in Kolhapur. Meanwhile, the owners of the collapsed building -- Ravi Basavaraj Sabarad, Basavaraj D Nigadi, Gangappa S Shintri and Mahabaleshwar Puradagudi surrendered to the Dharwad Suburban Police. "The owners came to the station and surrendered. They will be produced before the magistrate today (Friday). They were in police custody since they surrendered past midnight. They informed us that the architect Vivek Pawar had assured them that there were no structural defects. We are still probing the matter," DCP Nagesh, who is investigating the case said. Police say that the owners of the building are landowners in the Saundatti area and had decided to invest money for the construction of a commercial complex. "Gangappa Shintri is the father-in-law of former Dharwad MLA from Congress Vinay Kulkarni. The family owns huge tracts of land in the region and Gangappa Shintri is one of the richest men in Dharwad. Up on questioning, the owners said that they had invested Rs 7 crore to construct the complex. They have claimed no knowledge about building construction and said that they proceeded as per the architect's advise. We are investigating these claims," a police officer said. The five accused have been booked under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder), 337 (Causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) and 338 (Causing grievous hurt by act endangering life) of the IPC. Police say that the accused have applied for anticipatory bail. Police say that the ground floor of the complex had several shops and the owners of the building had obtained a partial occupation certificate. "We have reason to believe that the Town Municipal Corporation officials did not conduct any inspection before granting the partial occupation certificate. So far we have not arrested any municipal official as we are still probing the matter," the police added.  Rescue operations are still on for the fourth day with three teams of the National Disaster Response Force on the ground along with state emergency response personnel. The rescue teams suspect that five more people may be trapped inside the debris. On Friday morning, the NDRF team rescued a man named Dilip, who was trapped inside the debris for 62 hours. Dilip was still alive when he was rushed to the hospital. Its been four days since the under-construction building in Dharwad collapsed. The rescue operations are still on. Dilip was rescued and alive after 62 hours. @thenewsminute pic.twitter.com/pckl5ddMxE — Theja Ram (@thejaram92) March 22, 2019 Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, who visited the spot on Thursday announced that the compensation amount will be increased. Currently, families of deceased persons are eligible to obtain Rs 2 lakh compensation while the injured are slated to get Rs 50,000. "We will increase the amount and ensure that the compensation amount reaches the families immediately. I have instructed the Chief Secretary Vijay Bhaskar to do the same. If investigation reveals foul play on behalf of any official, stringent action will be taken against them," Kumaraswamy said.
