The importance of being Krishna Byre Gowda

Politics
Krishna – or KBG as everyone, including his wife Meenakshi, refers to him – is known for his political astuteness, pragmatism, and planning.
The alliance partners in Karnataka have thrown down the gauntlet and taken the battle to the BJP by fielding top young Congress leader, Krishna Byre Gowda, to fight the Bengaluru North Lok Sabha seat against Union minister and former Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda. With this, a seriousness that appeared lacking till now in the fight for Karnataka’s 28 seats, has suddenly emerged. Krishna – or KBG as everyone, including his wife Meenakshi, refers to him – is known for his political astuteness, pragmatism, and planning. His candidature, though left to the absolute last minute and with unnecessary fuss, indicates that the Congress will now work its hardest to fight the three seats in Bengaluru that have been held by the BJP for the last decade. His candidature signifies that the Congress acknowledges the importance of the Vokkaligas by giving the ticket to a young leader of their community, which has felt bruised by the Siddaramaiah regime from 2013-2018. It renders the alliance more palatable to the JD(S), the party of Vokkaligas. It helps Congress candidate BK Hariprasad in Bengaluru South consolidate the considerable Vokkaliga votes, while KBG’s mentee, the Bengaluru Central candidate Rizwan Arshad, benefits from his suave, urban Bengaluru image. KBG earned his reputation as a cool political fighter and clear-sighted planner the hard way.  Ten years ago, he stood for elections in the southern part of Bengaluru city, nominated as the Congress Candidate at the very last minute. He stood against the formidable four-term BJP MP, Ananth Kumar, a man who had friends everywhere including his opponents’ parties. In that election, the young, largely unknown KBG, with all of six years in political life and armed only with the knowledge of working with the Youth Congress as their Karnataka president for two years, gave Ananth Kumar one of the toughest fights of his political career. It was said in political circles, across party lines, that if KBG had been given some preparation time and if he had not been betrayed by some of his own partymen – who feared his sterling rise as Rahul Gandhi’s blue-eyed boy – he would have trounced Ananth Kumar in that election. The importance of being KBG was underlined just last week. None other than former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, the towering patriarch of the Vokkaliga community, visited the 45-year-old key minister of the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in Karnataka, at his official home. Deve Gowda is known to pay dramatic political visits at crucial times, but they are rare. And this was, perhaps, the first time that he visited a politician so much younger than himself, the son of one of his own cabinet ministers, the late C Byre Gowda, with whom his parting was acrimonious. The basis for Deve Gowda’s gesture was politically astounding. He went to invite KBG to contest the Bengaluru North seat, which had been given to the JD(S), in a convoluted arrangement similar to what has happened in Udupi-Chikmagalur constituency. Congress leader Pramod Madhwaraj is contesting that seat on a JD(S) ticket despite not resigning from the primary membership of his own party. And no one seems to find that extraordinary, given that an alliance between the Congress and JD(S) is itself, to borrow a BJP phrase, ‘unnatural.’   KBG reportedly politely declined the offer and instead told the senior Gowda that he and his party would extend wholehearted support to the JD(S). Though he did not state in so many words that he would not contest on a JD(S) ticket like Madhwaraj, sources say he “managed it with his usual finesse.” Deve Gowda had no option but to face the writing on the wall. He didn’t have a candidate to take on Union Minister DV Sadananda Gowda of the BJP, so he gave up the seat to his alliance partner. The Congress party, on its part, came to the exact same conclusion he did: that the alliance’s best candidate for Bengaluru North was KBG. Bengaluru North is a constituency that KBG knows far better than Bengaluru South. The constituency he represents in the Karnataka Assembly, Byatarayanapura, falls under Bengaluru North. He had to dive in, cultivate, and win this city constituency, newly formed in 2008, shifting from his old segment of Vemgal in Kolar district, which was disbanded during the reconstitution of Assembly constituencies. The problem for KBG is that again, he has been thrust into the fight for the Lok Sabha seat at the very last minute. His advantage, this time, is that he has more political knowledge, the support of both Congress and JD(S) workers and like Ananth Kumar, friends across parties. 7 GAIL employees booked in Bengaluru for fire following leak in pipeline

Fire
The fire caused panic among residents of AECS Layout's A Block Singasandra on Sunday evening at around 7pm.
An FIR has been registered against seven employees of GAIL in connection with a fire that broke out at AECS Layout in Bengaluru on Sunday. The fire occurred due to a leak in a pipeline and constable Rudresh Naik who was patrolling the area said that the leak was due to negligence of GAIL officials. The fire caused panic among residents of AECS Layout's A Block Singasandra on Sunday evening at around 7pm. Rudresh arrived on the spot around 10 minutes later after the police was alerted about the fire. Fire officials swung into action and managed to douse the fire around one-and-a-half hours later. Meanwhile, Vivek Wathodkar, chief general manager, Gail Gas Limited told the Times of India, “Recently, drainage work was carried out in the area due to which the gas pipe was exposed. Some debris close to the pipeline was set on fire on Sunday evening, which could have caused the fire. We have done initial repairs to the pipeline.”  No injuries were reported as the fire occurred in an open area. Rudresh however filed a police complaint at the Parappana Agrahara police station against senior employees of GAIL. An FIR was then registered against the officials under Section 286 (negligent conduct with respect to explosive substance) of the Indian Penal Code. However, a GAIL official speaking to The Hindu stated that the pipeline was exposed due to drain work taken up nearby and that a smaller fire had heated up the pipeline before the leak. "Due to the heat from the fire, the pipeline got damaged and there was a leak, which caught fire. Soon after we heard of the fire and leak, we closed the valves", an official from the company told The Hindu.

With the last date for filing nominations for the first phase having ended on Tuesday, 362 candidates filed papers in 14 parliamentary seats, Karnataka chief electoral officer Sanjiv Kumar said in the statement. The 14 constituencies, spread over the central and southern regions of the state, are Udupi-Chikmagalur, Hassan, Dakshina Kannada, Chitradurga, Tumkur, Mandya, Mysore, Chamrajnagar, Bangalore Rural, Bangalore North, Bangalore Central, Bangalore South, Chikkaballapur and Kolar. The maximum number of candidates is 40 in Bangalore North and minimum 13 in Chamrajnagar Hassan. With the ruling allies Congress and Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S) entering into a pre-poll alliance to field joint candidates, the electoral battle will mainly be a straight contest against the BJP in 13 seats, while it will be between Nikhil Kumaraswamy of the JD-S versus Independent Sumalatha Ambareesh in Mandya. 'BJP has faith in young people': Tejasvi Surya after filing nomination from Bengaluru South

Elections 2019
Tejasvi Surya says he is not apologetic about comment that those against Modi are supporting anti- India forces.
On Tuesday, an expectant saffron-clad crowd waited at the Maha Dodda Ganapathi Temple in Bengaluru’s Basavanagudi for the arrival of 28-year-old Tejasvi Surya, who was confirmed as the BJP's candidate from Bengaluru (South) constituency. However, many senior BJP leaders from the city including R Ashok were conspicuous by their absence at the temple and at the BBMP Office in Jayanagar where Tejasvi proceeded to file his nomination.  Tejasvi was flanked by PN Sadashiva, Bengaluru City BJP President and Ravi Subramanya, his uncle and Basavanagudi MLA at the procession in Basavanagudi. He was later joined by Uday Garudachar, Chikpet MLA, and Bengaluru-based Rajya Sabha MP Rajeev Chandrasekhar while notable leaders like former Deputy CM R Ashoka, Satish Reddy and V Somanna were absent during the event. Ashok is the campaign in-charge for the BJP in Karnataka and had inaugurated a poll office in Jayanagar last week along with Tejaswini.  A section of BJP supporters were also shouting slogans about Ananth Kumar, who held the Bengaluru South seat until his demise last year. But the mild dissidence did little to unnerve the 28-year-old debutant Tejasvi. "It was overwhelming. The BJP reposes faith in young leaders like me and that is the testimony to the vibrant nature of the party that they have seen I am worthy of this task," Tejasvi said speaking to reporters after signing his nomination papers.  "I called other leaders like Ashoka and Somanna but their schedules are prepared in advance and the candidature was announced late last night. I will be meeting them later today," he further added. The nomination process capped an exhausting day for the lawyer who was handpicked by the BJP to contest in Ananth Kumar’s constituency.  Tejasvi began his day by obtaining the B-Form from BJP State President BS Yeddyurappa at his residence in Bengaluru. He then visited Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, wife of Ananth Kumar, who had won from the Bengaluru South constituency six straight times since 1996. Tejaswini was widely expected to be named as the candidate this time. Her name, however, did not figure in the first list of candidates released by the BJP which triggered speculation that the central leadership of the party had other plans for the constituency that Ananth Kumar made his own over the years. Eventually, late on Monday night, Tejasvi’s candidature was confirmed from Bengaluru South. "I think in the same way just like in 1996 when a young Ananth Kumar was picked by the party, I have also been chosen. All the party leaders are together and will face this election together", he stated. Tejasvi is a lawyer practising in the Karnataka High Court. He studied at National College Jayanagar and National l Law School of India. He was a member of the ABVP in his college days after being part of the RSS since his school days. He later became a member of the party’s Yuva Morcha during his days as a student in Bangalore Institute of Legal Studies and is currently serving as the General Secretary of the Yuva Morcha. He officially joined the Yuva Morcha four years ago and writes columns for Swarajya, Opindia and India Facts.  Although he has a good reputation among the BJP cadre for his fervent speeches, critics have accused Tejasvi of making polarising statements in the past. In a tweet from 2014, that now stands deleted, Tejasvi Surya had said that he would dread the day the Women's Reservation Bill is passed.  When asked about the tweet, Tejasvi responded by saying he does not remember when exactly he had tweeted it. "I don't remember when I have said this. I have been busy with the nomination process all day. I don't know how people have taken which old tweet out of context but I have the intelligence to give the answers to the questions from those who ask them," he said. Another video in which he claims that "if people are not with Modi, they are anti-India" has also been circulated after the news of his candidature spread.  All anti-India forces have united to stop Modi. While Modi's agenda is building a new & robust India, their agenda is to stop him. They have no positive agenda. If you are with Modi, you are with India. If you are not with Modi, then you are strengthening anti-India forces. pic.twitter.com/k0mXzqItrG — Chowkidar Tejasvi Surya (@Tejasvi_Surya) March 22, 2019 Tejasvi said that he is not apologetic for the statement. "The context in which I made that statement is very clear. All of the hatred towards Modi has crossed sanity and is becoming hatred towards India. If you oppose Modi, in a democracy you very well have the right to do so. But the concern here is when that opposition to Modi turns to hatred and you start making statements which are used by your enemy countries, therefore, in that context I said this time especially with 2019 elections, if you are with Modi you are definitely with India and if you are anti-Modi your opposition to Modi is taking the shape of opposition to India which is dangerous. Therefore, I am not apologetic for having said that," he said.  Tejasvi will face senior Congress leader BK Hariprasad, who also filed his nomination on Tuesday. He chose to criticise the recent comments made by Hariprasad in which he suggested that there was 'match-fixing' between Narendra Modi and Imran Khan over the Pulwama terror attack. He also said that the BJP is grooming young leaders like Pratap Simha, Pritam Gowda and himself. But he was quick to add that this election is not about himself but a fight to return Modi to power. "This is not Tejasvi Surya vs BK Hariprasad. This is about Narendra Modi vs the rest," he added.

Feeling hot in Bengaluru already? It’s going to get worse in the coming days

Weather
The maximum temperature recorded in the city for Monday was 35.4 degrees Celsius.
Representational Image
Riled with the heat in Bengaluru? There is bad news in store. While there is no relief in sight in the form of rains, meteorologists have said that the temperatures will only rise in the city in the coming days.  “The current temperatures are usual for summer. Temperatures are 2-3C warmer than normal as in the case of past two-three years. For this week, there will be no rainfall in Bengaluru. Maximum temperatures may be around 35-36C while minimum temperature will remain 21-22C,” CS Patil, Indian Meteorological Department Bengaluru director and in-charge told TNM. The maximum temperature recorded in the city for Monday was 35.4C, while the minimum temperature was 21.5C. According to the IMD forecast, the maximum temperature in the coming week is expected to touch 36C while the minimum temperature is going to increase to a maximum of 22C. GS Srinivas Reddy, director of Karnataka State Natural Disaster Monitoring Centre said that temperatures currently are a little lower than those in the first week of March. “When we compare to the first week of March, the temperatures are comparatively lower. In the first week, we had recorded temperatures up to 37C. Now we are getting around 34-35C,” he said. He added, “In the coming days, we expect the situation to remain the same or temperatures to even rise a bit. As we progress to the end of March and beginning of April, the temperatures will rise. There is not much moisture in the clouds to have cloudy skies either.” He explained that there was some rainfall in Belagavi and other parts of north-interior Karnataka for the past few days due to the formation of a trough. “Last week, there was some circulation in north Interior and south interior Karnataka, because of which there was a slight drop in temperature and rains in some pockets. Rains are still there in north interior Karnataka. Later in the week, there will be some rain in the coastal and Malnad regions but not in the south of the state,” he said.

Karnataka BJP MLA writes to Home Min, seeks protection for Sumalatha, Darshan, Yash

Lok Sabha 2019
Mahadevapura MLA Arvind Limbavali said he was requesting CRPF protection in the wake of violent actions by Sumalatha’s opponents.
As the battle in Mandya heats up for the Lok Sabha polls, a Karnataka BJP MLA has written to the Union Home Minister seeking protection for actor-politician Sumalatha and actors Darshan and Yash. In a letter addressed to Rajnath Singh dated March 24, Mahadevapura MLA Arvind Limbavali said, “I hereby request you to kindly provide Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) protection to Smt Sumalatha Ambareesh, independent candidate in Mandya Lok Sabha constituency, Karnataka, and leading Kannada actors Shri Darshan and Shri Yash, at the earliest in the wake of increasing violent actions by her opponents, particularly from workers and supporters of the political parties: JD(S) and Congress.” Sumalatha, the wife of former actor-politician ‘Rebel Star’ Ambareesh who passed away recently, is an independent candidate from Mandya. The BJP is supporting her in a bid to defeat CM HD Kumaraswamy’s son and budding actor Nikhil Gowda in a constituency that is considered to be a JD(S) bastion. Darshan and Yash, popular Kannada actors, had also received threats allegedly at the behest of Mandya JD(S) MLA Narayana Gowda for supporting Sumalatha’s candidature. There were also reports of Darshan’s residence being attacked by supporters of the Congress and JD(S) who were against Sumalatha. With JD(S) allotted the Mandya seat as per the seat-sharing pact with the Congress, Sumalatha was denied a Congress ticket but she stuck to her choice with the confidence and support of Ambareesh’s fans. Incidentally, MLA Narayana Gowda has been booked by the KR Pete Circle police station on March 21. In his letter, Limbavali added, “On the day of Smt Sumalatha’s nomination, all the cable networks were cut off by the JD(S) and Congress goons. JD(S) and Congress leaders are abusing Smt Sumalatha Ambareesh, Shri Darshan and Shri Yash in public meetings and also instigating their workers through social media platforms against these three personalities.” Limbavali pointed out that Sumalatha, who also has the support of many grassroots Congress workers, had complained to the Election Commission on Monday that the CM Kumaraswamy’s government was abusing the official machinery to tap her phone and spy on her. “She said that there were instances of a few men trying to gather information from her security guards and attempting to take photographs of those visiting the house. I had even asked a couple of them what were they doing outside my house, but was unable to get information,” Limbavali wrote in his letter. There were counter-allegations of violence too by the JD(S). Reportedly, during an election campaign in the same week in Bookanakere, a few members of the village had reportedly pelted stones at Nikhil Gowda’s car. They also shouted “Go back, Nikhil” slogans. It is important to note that Bookanakere is the birthplace of BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa and the support for Sumalatha in the village seems to indicate that the tide is changing.
