Video: I-T sleuths seize Rs 2.3 crore cash stuffed inside spare tyre in Karnataka

Crime
The video of cash being taken out of the tyre has gone viral.
As part of the ongoing checks by the Income Tax Department on account of the model code of conduct put in place for the Lok Sabha polls, sleuths on Saturday recovered Rs 2.3 crore cash which was hidden inside a spare tyre. Based on a tipoff, I-T officials tracked down the cash handler who was transporting cash from Bengaluru to Shivamogga and Bhadravathi. A video which has been doing the rounds on social media and messaging platforms, shows cash is being taken out of a small hole in the tyre.   #WATCH: Rs 2.30 cr in cash stuffed inside the spare tire in a car seized by Income-Tax officials. The cash was being transported from Bengaluru to Shivamogga. #Karnataka pic.twitter.com/yUeRdKVyzY — ANI (@ANI) April 20, 2019   “Interestingly, he (the handler) had removed at least four notes of Rs 2,000 from each bundle of 100 such notes, possibly as his commission,” said an official spokesperson. The spokesperson added, “Follow-up searches are underway in Bhadravati, where a further seizure of Rs 60 lakh is expected." This seizure was a part of total Rs 4.5 crore seized by I-T officials on Saturday alone. Shivamogga goes to polls on April 23 like other 13 seats in the state’s northern parts, where it is a straight fight between the Congress-JD(S) alliance and the BJP. The Election Commission on Sunday evening announced that during the MCC period, the I-T Department has seized cash worth Rs 17,69,98,570 and other items worth Rs 7,03,08,780. In addition to this, the 1,512 Flying Squads and 1,837 Static Surveillance Teams, 320 Excise Teams and 180 Commercial Tax teams formed by the EC have so far seized cash worth Rs 16,80,30,371, around 18,403.50 litres of liquor worth Rs.64,67,863.86 and around 143.1 kg of drugs worth Rs.7,52,700. Another 9,38,376.06 litres of iquor worth Rs 36,85,81,311, drugs (14.977 kg) worth Rs 4,48,000 were also seized by the Excise Department.

B'luru man hacks Instagram account, extorts money from minor with morphed pics

Crime
The 17-year-old boy allegedly paid the accused several lakhs before he told his parents about the situation.
The Bengaluru police have arrested a 28-year-old man for allegedly morphing photos of a 17-year-old boy and extorting money from him. According to the Rajajinagar Police, 17-year-old Prem* was active on Instagram, where he would chat with his friends a lot. In January this year, Prem allegedly received a message from a person with the same Instagram handle as his. “The man had created a fake account in my name and he had sent me an attachment along with a message. It was a nude photo of a boy and he had morphed my face onto it,” Prem’s complaint reads. The man, who identified himself as Vishwanath, allegedly told Prem that he would make his nude photographs public if he did not pay up Rs 10 lakh. In January this year, Prem allegedly met Vishwanath at the Marathahalli bus stop twice, where he paid Rs 50,000 and Rs 1,50,000 in order to ensure that the morphed photos are not published online. Later in February, the boy allegedly gave Vishwanath Rs 36,000 and 14 silver pieces weighing 10 gm each on multiple occasions. On February 14, Prem allegedly gave Vishwanath Rs 4,00,000 along with 11 pieces of silver. In March, the boy paid Vishwanath the last installment of 25 silver pieces. “Vishwanath promised to delete the photos. But in April, I once again got a call from him demanding more money,” Prem’s complaint states. Meanwhile, the parents of the boy, who finally noticed the disappearance of cash and silver from their locker at home, decided to approach the police and register a complaint. “That’s when the boy told his parents about the nude pictures and that he had taken the money in order to pay Vishwanath. On April 3, the boy’s parents came and filed a complaint,” the Rajajinagar Police told TNM. An FIR was registered under section 384 (extortion) and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the IPC along with sections 66C (identity theft) and 66D (cheating by impersonation) of the Information Technology Act. The police arrested Vishwanth on April 13 and the magistrate remanded him to five days police custody. Upon questioning, Vishwanath allegedly told the police that he had hacked the Instagram account of a minor girl, who was friends with Prem. “The boy and girl were in a relationship and he had sent his pictures to her. They were not completely nude ones but the boy had clicked some photos without a shirt. Vishwanath confessed to morphing the picture and extorting money out of the boy. When he hacked into the girl’s account, he found that the boy’s parents were rich. So, he decided to blackmail him,” the police added. Vishwanath is currently in judicial custody.  *Name changed to protect identity

Ground Report: Hindutva crusader Ananth Kumar Hegde’s stronghold in Uttara Kannada

Politics
Even if industries and jobs lag behind in the agriculture-heavy region, Ananth Kumar’s Hindutva rhetoric could help the five-time MP retain his seat.
Sirsi in Uttara Kannada is just days away from voting in the Lok Sabha elections, but signs of anticipation or excitement are almost absent on the ground. The streets are deserted and most of the stores are shut, except for one paan shop. I ask the vendor about the election fever, and he says, “It is all about BJP here." Unlike the quiet, undulating roads of Sirsi, the constituency’s sitting MP Anant Kumar Hegde is known across the country for his charged communal statements. A Congress bastion since Independence, Uttara Kannada has since transformed into a BJP fortress and, and Anant Kumar Hegde has led that transformation. Born in Sirsi in 1968, Anant Kumar came to prominence as a youth leader after an incident in 1994, when the tricolour was hoisted at the Eidgah Maidan in Hubli. By the early 90s, his status as a prominent Hindutva leader was unquestionable. The popular opinion in the town is that this election will be a cakewalk for the incumbent leader and the BJP, though it’s unclear whether there is support for the communal hate displayed by Anant Kumar. Some say that anti-incumbency – Anant Kumar has been elected five times – will be a huge factor against him. I ask Suresh, a resident who believes Hegde will win, if he has done any developmental work for Sirsi. He says no. Then why will he win? “Because people will vote for Modi and not for him,” he says. An agricultural stronghold The journey around Sirsi is filled with sights of arecanut farms, banana plantations, and jowar and paddy fields. Agriculture is the main occupation in Sirsi taluk, with Havyakas and Naik communities being the chief landholders. At 42.3%, the registered worker population in the district is fourth lowest in the state, which could be attributed to the significant farming population in the district. On his website, Hegde lists the following as his achievements in the past five years: funding a new six lane highway, construction of all-season port as well as ports for small scale fisheries, modernization of railway tracks and stations, and tourism development. While some of these projects are initiated on paper, the implementation is yet to happen. Hegde pleads to people to vote him and BJP back into power so that the implementation is unaffected. Green fields at Gudnapur near Sirsi. TSS Supermarket in Sirsi. Due to the presence of protected forest areas and a thriving agriculture sector, it is felt that industrial development has lagged behind in the region. Journalist and long-time Sirsi resident Shailaja feels that people in the region should understand the need to grow the agriculture sector even more, and not succumb to the idea that jobs mean working in corporate offices. Some of the youth disagree though, and argue that if industries are not setup, they will have to migrate to cities like Bengaluru. How else will they use their education, they ask. The success of the agriculture sector in Sirsi region can be attributed to TSS (Totagaras Co-operative Sales Society). Setup in 1923, the organization is a great example of the success of the co-operative movement. TSS provides sales, marketing and financing services to the farmers in the region. A massive storage facility setup by TSS in Sirsi has been a blessing for the farmers. As Havyaka names prominently figure on the TSS website, I ask Shailaja if they support Anant Kumar Hegde. She says that while the organization is largely apolitical and does not endorse anyone publicly, traditionally many Congress leaders have been part of it. The political field Joachim Alva, a writer and a prominent Christian figure in the Indian Independence movement was the first elected Member of Parliament from the constituency (then known as North Kanara). G Devaraya Naik was another prominent Congress leader from Uttara Kannada, winning the elections between 1980 and 1991. Margaret Alva, the only leader to defeat Anant Kumar Hegde (in the 1999 elections), is the last Congress candidate to win a Lok Sabha election in the constituency. JD(S) is yet to register a victory here. With more than 15 lakh electors, the constituency ranks second lowest in the state. The Scheduled caste population in the district is only 8.1% (amongst the lowest four districts in the state). Interestingly, two taluks of Belgaum district – Khanapur and Kittur – come under Uttara Kannada constituency, and, have been crucial to the outcome of elections. Shailaja says that although Hegde’s performance is questionable, the opposition candidate, Anand Asnotikar from JD(S), too faces tough questions. She also draws attention to the legacy of Ramakrishna Hegde, former Chief Minister of Karnataka, and his bitter experience with Janata Dal - he was allegedly expelled from the party on Deve Gowda’s insistence. Marikamba temple at Sirsi. The fact that Asnotikar was first elected from Congress as an MLA from Karwar in 2008, and then joined BJP, and has now switched sides to JD(S) does not help his cause. There is also talk of in-fighting in the opposition as many feel Prashant Deshpande (son of R V Deshpande, and opponent of Hegde in the last Lok Sabha elections) would have been a better candidate. Shailaja rues that the Congress-JD(S) combine has not been able to present a strong opposition to BJP in the region. There is speculation as to how much RV Deshpande (Revenue Minister in the Karnataka cabinet) and his supporters will campaign for Asnotikar. Shailaja says that one of the key issues in the constituency will be the eviction of people from the forests. The Supreme Court recently rejected claims of more than 1.1 million people of their right to live in forests under Forests Rights Act. Siddhis, Kunbis, Goulis, Sheeligas are some of the tribes which have a significant presence in the forests of Uttara Kannada region. The political class is yet to devise a strategy to address the problem of the impending eviction. Ananth Kumar continues to enjoy popularity in the region because there is a substantial population, especially in the coastal area, who support the Hindutva ideology and his incendiary remarks have made him popular. Some say that this election season he hasn’t made any communal remarks and has been only targeting the dynastic nature of Congress leadership. It is hard to understand if there is support for the communal hatred displayed by Hegde, but certainly, the popular opinion is that this election will be a cakewalk for him and the BJP. As I travel onwards to Dharwad in a KSRTC bus, seated next to me is an educated middle-aged couple settled in Dharwad for decades. Half an hour into our conversation about the elections, the lady asserts, “We need people like Anant Kumar Hegde to control Muslims. Otherwise it will be chaos.”

'He harassed our daughter for six months': Parents of student murdered in Raichur

Crime
The woman's parents also said that accused Sudarsha Yadav's uncle is a police officer, and held him responsible for not taking down a missing persons complaint on April 13.
Five days after the death of their daughter, the parents of the 23-year-old engineering student who was found hanging from a tree, addressed the media in a press conference in Raichur on Saturday. The woman’s parents alleged that their daughter was harassed by a man named Sudarshan Yadav for the last six months. Sudarshan Yadav was arrested by the Netaji Nagar Police on the night of April 18 after the victim's parents filed a complaint against him. A case of rape and murder has been filed against him. The woman was found hanging from a tree at a farm located behind the Husukina Hanumantha temple near Manik Prabhu Layout on April 15. The victim was identified as a 23-year-old engineering student, who went missing on April 13.  Although the police alleged that the victim was in a relationship with Sudarshan Yadav, her parents staunchly denied this. “My daughter became friends with Sudarshan when she was in PU (pre-university) college. Six months ago, they had a falling out and she stopped talking to him. Ever since, Sudarshan began harassing my daughter. He would keep following her all the time. Her father had to always be with her and drop her to college on several occasions to make sure that Sudarshan does not trouble her. We know what our daughter went through and how miserable she had become because of him,” the woman’s mother said. The woman’s parents alleged that when their daughter did not come home on April 13, they had rushed to the Sadar Bazaar Police Station at around 7 pm to file a complaint. But the police did not take their complaint seriously. "When we went to file the complaint, no one took us seriously. When they informed us later that our daughter was dead, we refused to believe it. Her birthday was on April 16 and we got a cake and cut it hoping she would come home,” the woman’s mother said, as she broke down.   “There is a station writer at the Sadar Bazaar Police Station named Anjaneya. He is Sudarshan Yadav’s uncle and he was the one who influenced the other police officers present at the station to not take our complaint seriously,” the woman’s mother added. Her parents alleged that her scooter – a white colour Honda Activa was found parked inside the college campus ner the library and that her phone had been switched off since the night of April 13. They also stated that Anjaneya had their daughter’s phone, which the police later recovered. When TNM contacted the Netaji Nagar Police, who are investigating the case, they refused to comment about the victim's phone.  The Netaji Nagar Police, had found a death note next to the woman's body. The note stated that the woman was taking her own life as she had backlogs in a few subjects. The victim’s parents stated that the handwriting on the death note was their daughter’s, but they alleged that Sudarshan may have forced her to. As news of the woman's death spread through the district, classmates of the woman and students studying in the institute staged a protest demanding justice. The students contended that the suicide note was fake and that it was a clear case of murder.  Faced with massive protests, police officials who had maintained that it was a case of suicide, were forced to register a case of rape and murder on Thursday. According to the police, the property on which the girl's body was found belonged to Sudarshan's father.

Animal activist in Mangaluru uses reflective collars to save stray dogs from accidents

Animal welfare
Tauseef Ahmed had tagged about 400 dogs with reflective collars to prevent collisions with drivers of fast-moving vehicles.
In an attempt to save dogs from falling victim to traffic accidents, a Mangaluru-based animal rescuer has set out on a mission to tag the animals with reflective collars. 31-year-old Tauseef Ahmed, an MBA graduate and a realtor, has come to be known as Mangaluru’s animal rescuer. He has already tagged 400 dogs with the reflective belts in the coastal city, he says. An activist with the city-based Animal Care Trust (ACT) in Surathkal for over a decade, Tauseef says he wanted to prevent accidents and reduce the number of deaths of animals. "Based on my own observations, I gathered that most of these accidents occur during the night time due to the lack of visibility of the stray animals. Especially close to the highway, there are an unaccounted number of deaths of these animals on the road," he says. Last year, Tauseef was the youngest recipient of ‘Best Street Care and Rescue’ award at the India for Animals (IFA). The belts work similarly to the reflective signs on the road. When direct light (from vehicles) is emitted on these strips, it reflects back to the driver. The activist hopes that these reflectors will catch the attention of the drivers from about 50 meters away and make them slow down. As per the 19th Livestock Census (Karnataka) in 2012, Dakshina Kannada has the highest number of dogs at 1,46,510. “The reflector belt on dogs not only saves the lives of these animals, but it also saves the lives of the drivers," Tauseef says. He points out that there are multiple incidents involving stray dogs and two-wheelers in which both the vehicle topples, injuring both the rider and the animal. A simple reflector can aid in preventing such accidents, he added. Pegged at the cost of Rs 40, Tauseef says he used his personal savings to buy about 500 belts from Indore. "We have already distributed them to few local residents and animal lovers to identify stray dogs and protect them. Inspired by the initiative, few locals have also taken into sponsoring 'stray' animals with belts," he says. Born and raised at Kudremukh in Chikmagalur district, Tauseef moved to Mangaluru about 13 years ago. After growing up in a place where animals of all kinds were cared for, including dogs, cats, cows and elephants, he was shocked to see the numerous animals killed in road accidents.   Initially Tauseef wanted to tag cattle with reflective strips as well, since cows are also frequent victims of road accidents. However, he says, "I was concerned if they will be misused by the perpetrators to identify cattle for meat purposes.” Tauseef works goes beyond just reflective collars as he tried to treat injured animals in the city as well. The activist says he spends about 30 to 40 percent of his salary for animal treatment, including buying medicines or injections. “About 80 percent of cases are treated on site,” he says, ”If the cases are severe, then with help of a team from ACT, we take the animal to the hospital for further treatment.” Content provided by www.storyinfinity.com (Subs and Scribes Media Ventures LLP).
