A 30-year-old man, who had allegedly slashed off part of a flight attendant’s ear when she refused his marriage proposal, surrendered to the Bengaluru Police in the early hours of Friday. Ajay Kumar alias Jokey, a resident of Jalahalli had stalked a 27-year-old flight attendant for months. Kodigehalli Police, who are investigating the case, say that Ajay Kumar first met the victim a few years ago through her older sister. “Ajay and the woman became friends through her older sister. A few months ago, Ajay asked the victim to marry him and she refused,” a Kodigehalli Police official said. The victim, the police said, told Ajay that she was not interested in speaking with him any longer. However, Ajay allegedly began stalking her and constantly harassing her whilst demanding that she marry him. “A few months ago, the victim told her parents and together they had approached the Jalahalli police and the victim filed a complaint alleging that he had been sexually harassing her for months,” the police said. Jalahalli Police told TNM that Ajay had multiple cases registered against him and after the victim filed her complaint of sexual harassment, the police opened a rowdy-sheet against Ajay Kumar. “He has multiple cases of assault and sexual harassment filed against him so we opened a rowdy-sheet. Around 4.30 pm on May 12, the victim was returning from work in a cab. She was passing by Hebbal when her cab was waylaid by Ajay,” a police official from Kodigehalli said. Ajay allegedly got into the cab and began demanding that the victim agree to his proposal. When she refused, he allegedly ripped off her right ear, stabbed her in the face, and punched her in the stomach. “The driver rushed her to a private hospital nearby. She underwent treatment and has been discharged. The knife stabbed her chin and her right ear has been damaged,” the police added. The North-East division police were on the look out for Ajay. However, he surrendered to the Yeshwanthpur Police early on Friday morning. He has been booked for assault with a deadly weapon, sexual harassment, and criminal intimidation, and remanded to judicial custody.

Hailstorm in Bengaluru: Part of pre-monsoon showers say experts

Weather
Light to moderate rains are expected in parts of Karnataka on Friday including in Kodagu, Mysuru, and Bengaluru.
Several parts of Bengaluru witnessed a hailstorm on Friday afternoon including parts of the Central Business District of MG Road, Cubbon Park and surrounding areas. There was widespread rainfall across the city with Gantiganahalli in Bengaluru North Taluk recording the most intense rainfall of 22.5mm of rainfall between 1:15-1:30pm. Sunil M Gavaskar, Meteorologist at Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre, said, “The hail is due to thunderstorm activity starting from northern Bengaluru to central parts. Hail is possible because it is sudden convection. Hailstorm is common during pre-monsoon rains and it was observed yesterday (Thursday) also in some parts of the city. There will be moderate rainfall in Bengaluru today as well.” He added, “Kodagu, Mysuru, Mandya, Dakshina Kannada, Chamarajanagara, Tumkur, Hassan, Ramanagara, Chikballapura, Kolar, Bengluru Rural and Benagluru Urban districts are likely to have thunderstorm activity associated with scattered light to moderate rains and isolated places heavy rains with gusty winds at times during evening to late evening hours today (Friday).” Hail forms when strong currents of rising air carry droplets of water high enough that they freeze. A strong current of air allows hailstones to grow large enough that they reach the ground, weather officials explained. Rains in the city were forecast in the city by the Indian Metrological Department with widespread scattered rainfall all over south interior Karnataka along with lighting and thunderstorms. At the same time, the Karnataka State Natural Disaster Management Centre had also predicted that maximum temperatures are likely to be above normal at many places in the state over the week.    Bengaluru- Sudden rain with hail stones bring big respite from heat, but with penalty brace more traffic jams, water clogging, falling trees, overflowing of the drains, lakes and power cuts... pic.twitter.com/uTp8hK7QeS — Manoj jogiya (@ManojJogiya) May 17, 2019     Hail stones in Bengaluru. @WeAreBangalore@BngWeather @weatherchannel#Bengaluru #Rainfall #Rainfall pic.twitter.com/WMlpwghhgI — Deepak Bopanna (@dpkBopanna) May 17, 2019     #Bengaluru hail storm at Queens road pic.twitter.com/sqrURuyiP6 — [ɪnˈkwɪzɪtɪv] (@nalegave) May 17, 2019

Don Ravi Pujari trying to delay extradition to India? K'taka cops believe so

Crime
Sources in the Karnataka police allege that a false complaint has been filed against fugitive Ravi Pujari with the intention to delay his extradition to India.
The Karnataka and Maharashtra Police have run into more hurdles in the extradition of underworld don Ravi Pujari, who was detained in Senegal in January this year. According to police sources, on May 15, ahead of Pujari’s extradition hearing, a Senegalese man allegedly filed a complaint with the local police that Ravi Pujari alias Anthony Fernandez had cheated him of millions of dollars. “We suspect that Ravi Pujari has got one of his associates to file a false complaint. If a citizen of Senegal files a complaint against Ravi Pujari, then he cannot be extradited until the case reaches its logical end,” the police source said. On January 19, the Senegal Interior Minister and its Director of Judicial Police arrested Ravi from a barber shop in Dakar, Senegal after they were tipped off by the Karnataka and Maharashtra police. Karnataka Additional General of Police (ADGP) for Intelligence Amar Kumar Pandey kept track of Ravi since June 2018 in Burkina Faso and later in Senegal, when he moved with wife and children and was operating a restaurant chain in partnership with locals. However, Ravi Pujari has not made it easy for the authorities in India to extradite him. Soon after his arrest, Ravi Pujari, who had obtained fake identity documents as a Burkino Faso citizen, proclaimed that he is Anthony Fernandez. By denying his identity, Ravi Pujari obtained relief from extradition for three months. However, the Indian authorities submitted his fingerprint and DNA samples to the Sengal court, which proved he was indeed Ravi Pujari. However, Ravi Pujari’s extradition hearing began on May 15. “We received information that the complaint was filed when the extradition hearing began in the Senegal court. But we are working on proving that this false complaint against him is a diversion tactic,” the police added. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) had sent police dossiers translated to French to the Senegal authorities, which is being processed by the Justice Department. Police say that the MEA is trying to persuade Senegal to extradite Pujari under the United Nations Convention against Transnational Organized Crime. “The Indian government must agree to not sentence Pujari to death once he is extradited. We will extradite him soon. It may take a few more weeks,” the source added. Pujari’s lawyers have argued in court that he is Anthony Fernandez from Burkina Faso as mentioned in his passport and not a fugitive. Karnataka police say that they picked up Pujari’s trail in 2018 in Burkina Faso, where he had partnered with a few Indian men to run a restaurant chain called Namaste India. The police found that Pujari had obtained another identity. Police say that Pujari had a built a good reputation for himself as a businessman and philanthropist. The police found he was in Senegal after a local publication had featured him in an article. In 1994, when Pujari was charged with murder of a builder, he was released on bail. However, he is believed to have fled to South Africa and then to Dubai, Australia and then went back to West Africa. The Maharashtra police had approached the Interpol to issue a red corner notice against him in 1994 when he had fled. The red corner was issued and it contained Pujari’s fingerprint, which was collected when he was in judicial custody in India. Born in Malpe in coastal Karnataka, Ravi Pujari has been on the run for over two decades. He has been charged with several crimes including extortion (384), kidnapping for ransom (364), murder (302) and criminal intimidation (506) among other IPC sections. Currently, there are 98 criminal cases registered against Pujari in Karnataka, out of which 46 are registered in Bengaluru.

383 dengue cases recorded in Bengaluru in 5 months: Here’s what you can do to keep safe

Dengue
East Bengaluru, Mahadevpura, South Bengaluru and Bommanahalli are the four most affected areas.
The BBMP’s (Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike) Public Health Information and Epidemiological Cell (PHIEC) report reveals that in five months, the city has recorded 383 cases of dengue. East Bengaluru, Mahadevpura, South Bengaluru and Bommanahalli are the four most affected areas. May 16th is observed as National Dengue Day, and this initiative was recommended by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Govt. of India to create awareness and improve the preventive measures and preparedness ahead of the transmission season. In a tropical country like India, dengue is rampant; in 2017, Karnataka observed 17,844 cases making it the third highest state with dengue cases. According to Department of Health and Family Welfare, 29 cases of dengue have been recorded in the first nine days of May. With the growing number of unattended sodden garbage heaps, countless water puddles and damaged roads, diseases like dengue and chikungunya are here to stay. Chief Health Officer of BBMP, DR Manoranjan Hegde, said that “the BBMP commissioner conducted a meeting with the engineering department, department of health, education and road and infrastructure teams on May 15. He has given SWM (Solid Waste Management) department instructions to remove all disposed containers, coconut shells, cups etc. and has directed the engineering department to remove silt and other objects that can potentially stagnate water”.  When asked about the reason behind the growing number of dengue cases within BBMP limits, he said that intermittent rains are one of the major factors for the spike in dengue cases. Dr Hegde told TNM that “The BBMP has appointed teams of workers to conduct survey and check for breeding places. They are also trained to raise awareness among public regarding mosquito breeding and symptoms of fever”. A similar pattern was observed in 2018 with 1,544 cases, while in 2017, a whopping 7,291 cases were registered. Dengue is caused by a virus DENV, 1-4 stereotypes. This disease is spread by the bite of a vector mosquito Aedes aegypti, infected with any one of the four viruses. This dark mosquito with white streak can populate in natural habitats by laying eggs in common spots of stagnant water accumulation like tubs, tins, flower pots, rubber tyres, unused grinding stone, paper cups, coconut shells etc. Lack of proper garbage collection and reliable sanitation is one of the major causes for the spread of this virus. The female Aedes aegypti buzzes mostly between 8am to 9am and again about two hours before sunset i.e. between 5pm to 6pm. The virus flourishes when the day is hot and humidity is high, making the mosquito a “day feeder”. The disease is asymptomatic i.e. the infected person shows no clinical signs and symptoms of the disease. Once a person gets bitten, there is an incubation time of 4-10 days after which flu-like symptoms appear. Symptoms include 104 degrees Farenheit fever accompanied by severe headaches, aching behind the eyes, tired muscles and joints, nausea, vomiting, glandular swelling and rashes. It is difficult to distinguish dengue fever from regular fevers, thus it is advisable to get blood tests done. Dengue can be confirmed when the patient’s blood platelet level drops below 50,000 microlitre or when there is an increase in blood haematocrit level.     Dengue can also infect an individual more than once. There are four strains of the virus (DENV 1, DENV 2, DENV 3, and DENV 4). Precautions to take It is critical to take proper measures to keep the virus at bay. Some measures are:  Remove any source of stagnant water Use larvicides in water containers that cannot be emptied Wear loose full-sleeved shirts, full pants and socks during monsoon Avoid using scented soaps and perfumes as it attracts mosquitos Keep all containers at home covered Keep wet garbage separate and covered Ensure that all doors and windows are closed before 5pm Use mosquito repellent and mosquito nets while sleeping Keep the dengue patient safe and protected from further mosquito bites to prevent further spread of the virus.

EC moves K’taka HC over relief given to IAS officer who checked PM Modi’s helicopter

Controversy
Mohsin had got a Central Administrative Tribunal ruling in favour of him on April 29.
Mohsin had got a Central Administrative Tribunal ruling in favour of him on April 29.
The controversy surrounding senior Karnataka-cadre IAS officer Mohammed Mohsin, who was suspended by the Election Commission of India for conducting a search on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s helicopter in Odisha on April 16, refuses to die. The Election Commission (EC) has approached the Karnataka High Court objecting to the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) order which gave relief to Mohsin. Following this, a vacation division bench headed by Justice John Michael Cunha of the Karnataka High Court has issued notices to Mohsin, the state and central governments on the issue.  “Every officer appointed to oversee an election is deemed to be on deputation to the EC and the commission has control over such officer,” ECI submitted to the HC.  “The tribunal has failed to appreciate that Mr. Mohsin [as a GEO] without authority has directed the Executive Magistrate [of Sambalpur] to check the helicopter of the Prime Minister, who is SPG protectee. Mr. Mohsin clearly transgressed his authority and he violated the instructions of Commission,” part of the submission read. It further added, “The direction for maintaining status quo virtually amounts to staying the order recommending initiation of disciplinary action against Mr. Mohsin and it has a pan-India effect during the election period as other officers on election duty will not take the instructions of the Commission seriously.” Mohsin who was then deputed by the ECI as a general observer in Sambalpur district of the coastal state was suspended after the incident.  The suspension order had raised a storm in political circles with the opposition raising questions about the neutrality of the Election Commission’s office. Even former Chief Election Commissioner of India, SY Qureshi, has issued a statement questioning the EC’s role. Mohsin was later asked to report to the Karnataka Chief Electoral Officer on April 19.  Read: IAS officer suspended for checking PM's chopper in Odisha transferred to Karnataka EC Mohsin had got relief from the Central Administrative Tribunal (CAT) after the EC had asked the Karnataka government to take action. The EC said that Mohsin had conducted the search in PM Modi’s helicopter without authority as required for a SPG protectee. The CAT on April 29 ruled in favour of Mohsin stating that no disciplinary action can be taken against him. The CAT contended that Mohsin’s action was not an overreach as chief ministers of Karnataka and Odisha have faced similar checks.

Hours after tweet backing Godse, Central Min Anantkumar Hegde claims account hacked

Controversy
Somebody put him in touch with the cyber cops!
‘Chowkidar’ Anantkumar Hegde – the Union Minister of State for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship – has claimed a ‘security breach’. Apparently, his Twitter account was hacked, and he realised the breach after controversy raged over a tweet from his account. Quoting a tweet from Right Wing academician Madhu Kishwar, Anantkumar Hegde’s account had said on Friday that Gandhi’s killer Nathuram Godse would have been happy with the debate surrounding him in the past week. But within the hour, the tweet was deleted and Anantkumar Hegde claimed his account has been hacked. On Thursday, Madhu Kishwar had tweeted her admiration for Gandhi’s killer Godse, who has been making the news thanks to political rhetoric. “Sure he murdered Gandhi but he didn't hit & run. He surrendered & faced the trial with heroic courage & left a very powerful testament as to why he murdered Gandhi. I CONDEMN the murder but I admire Godse's courage in facing the gallows, staying firm on his version of patriotism,” she said. Endorsing this, Anantkumar Hegde’s account had tweeted, “Am glad 7 decades later today’s generation debates in a changed perceptional environment and gives good scope for the condemned to be heard upon. #NathuramGodse would have finally felt happy with this debate!” The central minister soon claimed his account was hacked, something that typically happens with political leaders right after they post something controversial or unpalatable. “My account was hacked since yesterday. There is no question of justifying Gandhi ji's murder. There can be no sympathy or justification of Gandhi ji's murder. We all have full respect for Gandhi ji's contribution to the nation,” the minister said, invoking ‘Gandhi ji’ thrice. My account was hacked since yesterday. There is no question of justifying Gandhi ji's murder. There can be no sympathy or justification of Gandhi ji's murder. We all have full respect for Gandhi ji's contribution to the nation. — Chowkidar Anantkumar Hegde (@AnantkumarH) May 17, 2019 Alarmingly, the minister has claimed his account has been breached twice in just this week. So far, there is no confirmation on whether he has filed a police complaint against the unknown hackers with views he regrets.   My Twitter account has been breached twice in the past one week and certain tweets have been posted on my timeline which has been discarded and deleted. Regret the posts attributed to me. — Chowkidar Anantkumar Hegde (@AnantkumarH) May 17, 2019 Decades after his killing of Mahatma Gandhi, and his own execution for the murder, Nathuram Godse is in the news this week after Makkal Needhi Maiam chief Kamal Haasan mentioned him in a political rally – calling him Independent India’s first Hindu extremist. The Tamil word he used – theeviravaadhi – can also be translated as terrorist, and therefore his comments have annoyed right wing Hindu nationalists across India, who have in turn decided to defend Godse’s actions. BJP’s Bhopal Lok Sabha candidate Pragya Singh Thakur on Thursday said that Nathuram Godse was a ‘deshbhakt' (patriot), is a 'deshbhakt' and will remain a 'deshbhakt'. “People calling him a terrorist should instead look within, such people will be given a befitting reply in these elections,” she added. She later claimed her stand was the same as the party’s when asked her reaction to the party distancing themselves from her comment.
