Sumalatha emerges victorious, defeats JD(S)-Congress might in Mandya

Lok Sabha 2019
By defeating Nikhil Kumaraswamy, Sumalatha has become the first independent candidate to win a Lok Sabha seat from Karnataka in 52 years.
Proving that being a party of the Deve Gowda family will not guarantee one a seat in Karnataka, Sumalatha, wife of late Congress leader Ambareesh, defeated Nikhil Kumaraswamy, son of Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, in Mandya. What seemed like a neck-and-neck fight in the morning soon turned into a landslide victory for Sumalatha. As an independent candidate backed by BJP, Sumalatha secured 6,98,213 votes while Nikhil Kumaraswamy secured 5,71,777 votes. By defeating Nikhil Kumaraswamy, Sumalatha has become the first independent candidate to win a Lok Sabha seat from Karnataka in 52 years. She is also only the third independent candidate ever to win a seat in Karnataka in the history of Lok Sabha elections so far. In the erstwhile state of Mysore, independent candidate Dubey Rajaram Giridarlal won from the Bijapur North segment. He became the first independent candidate to win a Lok Sabha seat from the state. Ten years later, Dinakar Desai won as an independent from the Kanara constituency in 1967. Now, 52 years later, Sumalatha has won the segment. “People have showed so much love. It’s not my victory but Ambareesh’s victory. It’s only because of the love people placed in him that I could achieve this. It’s a victory for all the people of Mandya. The people have shown that they do not give in to offers of money and the politics of caste. I will be eternally indebted to the people of Mandya. For not being cowed down by all the attacks they suffered, hats off to Darshan and Yash. For all the hurtful things people said about Darshan, Yash and me, the people have given them an appropriate answer. I thank the Congress cadre, the farmer’s association and the BJP as well,” Sumalatha told TNM. In one of the most watched and controversial election battles fought in Karnataka, Sumalatha, a political debutant, emerged victorious not just because she defeated Nikhil, who is also a political novice, but also because she managed trump the influence of the JD(S)’s first family that was backing Kumaraswamy's son. A traditional stronghold of the JD(S), the Mandya Lok Sabha constituency witnessed a high-power battle between Sumalatha and Nikhil. Seen as a mature, poised and intelligent contestant, Sumalatha also had the sympathy factor going, especially after the death of her husband – the legendary Sandalwood star Ambareesh, who was also a three-time MP from the region. During the election campaign, Nikhil Kumaraswamy was portrayed as the heir apparent to Kumaraswamy. With the JD(S) currently in power in Karnataka through its coalition with Congress, JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda saw the Lok Sabha elections as an opportunity to introduce his grandsons into politics. Although Nikhil has no experience in politics or administration, he quickly made headlines and gained popularity during his campaign due to his family’s backing. However, as Sumalatha was a strong contender, she had to face several misogynistic jibes from members of the JD(S) during the campaign. CM Kumaraswamy’s brother and PWD Minister HD Revanna for instance tried to shame Sumalatha, saying that she was showcasing her political ambitions months after Ambareesh’s death when she should be grieving him. She was also branded an opportunist willing to use her husband’s death to her advantage by the JD(S). However, Sandalwood stars Darshan, Yash and a huge section of the Kannada film industry had offered their support for Sumalatha. In addition, several Dalit, Adivasi and women’s groups in Mandya had pledged their support too. With her growing popularity, CM Kumaraswamy had also made a veiled threat to end the acting careers of Darshan and Yash as they were actively campaigning for Sumalatha. However, Sumalatha managed to defeat the might of the Deve Gowda-Kumaraswamy might and penetrate a decades-long stronghold of the JD(S).

BJP’s Sadananda Gowda retains Bengaluru North, Krishna Byre Gowda fails to deliver

Lok Sabha 2019
Krishna Byre Gowda was pushed as the trump card from the Congress-JD(S) alliance camp in the hopes of unsettling the BJP which won all the 3 Lok Sabha seats in Bengaluru in 2014.
Union Minister and former Karnataka Chief Minister DV Sadananda Gowda has retained his seat in Bengaluru North by defeating sitting state Minister Krishna Byre Gowda in one of Karnataka's most high-profile clashes for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Sadananda Gowda emerged victorious with a comfortable margin of 1,46,100 votes over his closest rival, Byre Gowda of the Congress-JD(S) alliance. “I bow my head to the voters of Bengaluru North constituency. I want to thank all the party workers and leaders who helped me. They fought like warriors in a battlefield and also because of Narendra Modi’s image, I was able to win for the second time,” a jubilant Sadananda Gowda said. This is his second victory from the seat. In 2014, Sadananda Gowda had defeated his nearest rival, C Narayana Swamy of the Congress, with a comfortable margin of over two lakh votes, riding the Modi wave. Sadananda Gowda’s previous Lok Sabha victories had come from the erstwhile Mangaluru and Udupi-Chikkamagaluru seats. In all Bengaluru city constituencies, the BJP had expected to perform well owing to the Modi factor as it remains a big draw in the state. They were also banking on unifying the Hindu vote. With BJP state President BS Yeddyurappa announcing that all sitting MPs will contest from their existing seats well in advance, Sadananda Gowda’s candidature was a foregone conclusion. Initially, there was a possibility of former Prime Minister and JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda contesting from Bengaluru North. To that, Sadananda Gowda had said, “I respect Deve Gowda but I am not afraid of him. It will be good if I contest against an elder in politics and if I win, that will be even better." Byre Gowda, minister for Rural Development in the state, was fielded as the trump card from the Congress-JD(S) alliance camp in the hopes of unsettling the BJP. However, he has failed to match up to the task, though he had the blessing of HD Deve Gowda himself, despite his initial reluctance. Byre Gowda’s candidature was made official on the last day of filing nominations. With this, the five-time MLA and two-time Minister faces his second loss in Lok Sabha elections.    In 2009, Byre Gowda had contested unsuccessfully against the late BJP Union Minister Ananth Kumar from the Bengaluru South constituency. Though Byre Gowda emerged second in 2009, it was by a close margin of 40,000 votes.

Former Karnataka CM Veerappa Moily loses, BJP candidate wins by big margin

Lok Sabha 2019
Veerappa Moily lost to BJP's BN Bache Gowda by a margin of 1,82,110 votes in Chikkballapur.
Congress leader Veerappa Moily who served as Chief Minister of Karnataka between 1992 and 1994 has lost in his Chikkballapur Lok Sabha constituency with 5,63,802 votes. BJP’s BN Bache Gowda’s vote count currently stands at 7,45,912. The margin of the latter’s victory is 1,82,110 votes. Chikkabllapur has always been a stronghold of the Congress with Veerappa Moily himself winning in the last two Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and 2014. In 2014, his win came with a narrow margin of 9,520 votes with BJP’s BN Bache Gowda closely following him. He was first elected from Karkala in Udupi district as an MLA in 1992. He won from there six consecutive times. The former Petroleum minister first became a minister in the DevrajUrs cabinet. He was the Minister of State for Small Scale industries and held the position from 1974-77. After Bangarappa resigned in 1992, he became the chief minister of Karnataka. In 2009, he became the Chikkballapur MP. He was a cabinet minister from 2009 and 2014 and held both, Law and Justice as well as Corporate Affairs portfolios. Another portfolio he held is Finance and Planning (1980-1984) in Karnataka. Moily had chaired the Tax Reforms Commission (2000-2002) and the Revenue Reforms Commission (2002-2004). Between 2006 and 2009, he was the chairperson of the Oversight Committee for implementation of 27% reservation for OBCs in central educational institutions. Veerappa Moily is presently the Union Minister of Corporate Affairs. The minister was also embroiled in controversy in 2014 when the Anti-Corruption Branch of New Delhi named him, Reliance Industries chairperson Mukesh Ambani, former Minister Murli Deora and former Director-General of Hydrocarbons VK Sibal for allegedly colluding to fix natural gas prices. They were accused of inflating gas prices to be costlier than the production cost, as well as capping production before capacity level to seek upward revision. Hindutva crusader Anantkumar Hegde gets unprecedented mandate in Uttara Kannada

Lok Sabha 2019
The BJP leader won by a margin of 4,77,081 votes, a new record for Karnataka.
In what has been an unprecedented mandate for the BJP in Karnataka, Anantkumar Hegde has won the Uttara Kannada seat for the sixth time, with a margin of 4,77,081 votes (after all 19 rounds of counting Hegde has bagged 7,83,211 votes and Anand Asnotikar, the runner-up, has garnered only 3,06,130). This margin is a new record for Karnataka. Anantkumar is known across the constituency for his ‘straightforward’, ‘no nonsense’ leadership. People have many stories to tell about his public outbursts and his intolerance for corruption. While these might seem novel qualities, a section of the population – mainly in the areas which come under Belgaum district and the coastal areas – see him as someone who will not compromise on the Hindutva ideology and keep ‘Muslims in control’. While the lack of jobs for the youth is a problem, the largely agriculturalist upper class in the constituency see him as someone who will not compromise on the environmental wealth of the region for mindless industrialisation. The above factors would have certainly helped Anantkumar win the seat again, but the margin has been enhanced with the help of a clueless opposition. Many feel that the Congress made a compromise by giving the seat to the JD(S), their alliance partners. There is a widespread opinion that Prashant Deshpande, son of minister RV Deshpande, would have been a better candidate to take on Anantkumar. Although Prashant had lost in 2014, there were certain areas in the constituency where he had fared better than Anantkumar. In addition to this, the overwhelming image of Prime Minister Modi as the incorruptible messiah – a narrative popularised by television media – seems to have helped Anantkumar win this record mandate. Will this result make him more ambitious at a national level? Will it make him more conscious of his image and hence restrain himself from making overtly communal remarks as many in the district seem to claim? Prajwal Revanna wins in Hassan, follows in Deve Gowda's footsteps

Lok Sabha 2019\
Prajwal Revanna wins in Hassan, follows in Deve Gowda's footsteps
The Hassan Lok Sabha seat in Karnataka, which was held by former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda for five terms, will now be held by his grandson and JD(S) candidate, Prajwal Revanna, who has emerged victorious in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Prajwal is winning with 6,75,512 votes, by a margin of 1,42,123 votes, after 21 rounds of counting. Congress rebel and BJP candidate A Manju is emerging second with 5,33,389 votes. This victory marks Prajwal's debut in electoral politics. Armed with a postgraduate degree from Australia, Prajwal had first started assisting Deve Gowda during the Lok Sabha elections in 2014. He toured the Old Mysuru region regularly and also took up the task of campaigning for his father’s constituency – the Holenarasipra Assembly segment – during the 2018 Assembly elections. Although he was touted to be a strong contender for the Assembly elections, he was denied a ticket. For the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Deve Gowda, who was the MP from Hassan, relinquished his seat to pave the way for Prajwal, the son of Karnataka PWD Minister HD Revanna. Prajwal shifted to Hassan in order to help build the youth wing of the party, and made inroads into Belur, Hunsur and the Mandya regions. “I will be eternally thankful to the voters of Hassan, who have trusted me and cast their valuable votes in my favour,” Prajwal Revanna said, after winning the election, “I thank all the Congress leaders for their support, as they set aside all their differences. I thank all the JD(S) party workers, who worked day and night to ensure my victory. I had approached the people assuring the overall development of the district. Each taluk faces a different problem. I would make all efforts to find a solution.” Prajwal faced Congress rebel Manju in a heated battle in the polls – Manju switched to the BJP after reports emerged that Deve Gowda would not contest as the coalition candidate from Hassan. Manju had expected the Congress to give him the ticket to contest from Hassan. However, he was disappointed when the seat was given to the JD(S) and Prajwal Revanna was the preferred candidate instead of Deve Gowda. Deve Gowda was elected as the Hassan MP three times in a row in 2004, 2009 and 2014. He was also previously elected in 1991 and 1998, but faced defeat in 1999. Manju was defeated by Deve Gowda in the 2014 elections from the constituency. During the campaign for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, questions were raised about dynasty politics and the JD(S)'s attempt to make Hassan its bastion. And with this first win, Prajwal is set to do just that.

People have taught Congress befitting lesson in Karnataka: BS Yeddyurappa

Lok Sabha 2019
The BJP is leading in 24 out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, including several crucial ones like Kalaburgi, Tumakuru and Kolar.
As the election results trickle in, it seems like the BJP has swept the polls in Karnataka. The party is leading in 24 out of 28 Lok Sabha constituencies, including several crucial ones like Kalaburgi (Gulbarga), Tumakuru (Tumkur) and Kolar. The Congress is leading in only two seats – Bengaluru Rural and Chamarajanagar – while the JD(S) is leading in Hassan. Speaking to the media, BJP state president BS Yeddyurappa said that the electorate has “taught the Congress a befitting lesson” by supporting the BJP. “Many stalwarts, including former PM HD Deve Gowda, leader of Opposition for Congress in Lok Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge, former Union Ministers Veerappa Moily and KH Muniyappa, have lost terribly. This shows that the people of Karnataka have believed in Narendra Modi. The people have taught a befitting lesson to Siddaramaiah, who spoke arrogantly against Narendra Modi and the BJP,” Yeddyurappa said. Calling the 2019 elections a historic one for the BJP, Yeddyurappa thanked the electorate for the trust they placed in the party. “In the history of Karnataka elections, the people of Karnataka have for the first time given BJP a thumping majority. We are leading in 24 seats for the first time and creating history. In North Karnataka, coastal Karnataka and Malnad region, the people have supported us unconditionally. I thank them immensely for this,” he added. Yeddyurappa said that the lack of developmental works, the betrayal people suffered after the coalition went back on its promise of waiving farm loans, and massive corruption had left the voters disillusioned. “Besides, massive corruption in the coalition government, the rampant discrepancies in transfer of officials have all resulted in the people losing confidence in the Congress and JD(S),” he said. When asked whether the coalition government would fall, Yeddyurappa said that the BJP has decided to wait and watch. He said that the BJP is waiting for the Congress and JDS to make a decision. “We will wait and see what happens next, I cannot tell you now. The decision has to be taken by Congress and JDS leaders. I don’t want to say anything now. I saw on TV that the JDS state president Vishwanath has resigned, but let us wait till tomorrow and see what happens. We are also awaiting decisions from the central leadership,” he added.
