Karnataka Assembly bye-elections: BJP wins in Chincholi, Congress in Kundgol

Lok Sabha 2019
BJP's Avinash Jadhav won from the Chincholi Assembly, while Kusuma Shivalli, wife of late Congress MLA CS Shivalli, won from Kundgol constituency.
The Congress and the BJP have secured one seat each in the bye-elections to two Assembly seats in Karnataka - Chincholi and Kundgol. BJP's Avinash Jadhav won from the Chincholi Assembly constituency, securing 69,109 votes, while the Congress’s Kusuma Shivalli won from the Kundgol constituency with 77,640 votes, with a margin of 1,601 votes. The results were declared along with the 2019 Lok Sabha election results, which saw the BJP emerging victorious in 25 seats. The Congress and JD(S) won one seat each and the independent candidate, Sumalatha won the Mandya segment. Avinash Jadhav, the son of BJP MP (Member of Parliament) Umesh Jadhav, won with a margin of 8,030 votes in Chincholi. The bye-elections were necessitated after Umesh Jadhav resigned as the Congress MLA earlier this year. Umesh Jadav quit the Congress after a fallout with the party veteran, Mallikarjun Kharge. Umesh Jadav accused Kharge of favouring the latter’s son Priyank Kharge and sidelining senior Congress leaders, who had put in far more effort in building the party base in Kalaburgi (known as Gulbarga before delimitation in 2008). Although Avinash Jadhav was up against Subash Rathod of the Congress, the fight for Chincholi was a proxy election battle between Mallikarjun Kharge and Umesh Jadhav. Although there were 12 candidates in the fray, including one from the BSP, the bye-elections was a straight fight between Subash Rathod and Avinash Jadhav. Kusuma Shivalli, wife of late Congress MLA CS Shivalli, won with a margin of 1,611 votes in Kundgol. The bye-elections were necessitated after the death of CS Shivalli in March this year. The results come at a time when there are fresh talks of the BJP usurping the Congress-JD(S) coalition government in the state. In the 224-seat Karnataka Assembly, the majority mark is 113 seats. The strength of the coalition in the Assembly stands at 117 – with the Congress having 79 MLAs, the JD(S) with 37 MLAs and 1 BSP MLA. The BJP emerged as the single largest party in the elections with 104 seats. With Kusuma and Avinash winning, the strength of the coalition is now 118. BJP is now at 107 –105 MLAs plus two independents – R Shankar from Ranebennur and H Nagesh from Mulbagal constituencies.

BJP wins 25 of 28 seats in Karnataka, Congress-JD(S) manage two seats

Lok Sabha 2019
Many high-profile leaders of the Congress and JD(S), including former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, have been rejected by the electorate, while independent candidate Sumalatha Ambareesh was victorious.
The BJP has effectively wiped its opposition off the map in Lok Sabha 2019 elections in Karnataka, limiting the Congress and JD(S) to one seat each. Even Sumalatha Ambareesh, the independent candidate whom the BJP had lent support to, has won against Nikhil Kumaraswamy, the grandson of former Prime Minister and JD(S) leader HD Deve Gowda. The Congress and JD(S) parties suffered a brutal defeat. Only DK Suresh, the brother of DK Shivakumar, has been able to retain his seat from the grand old party in Karnataka. For the JD(S), Hassan, which former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda had made its own, has been preserved by his grandson Prajwal Revanna. Veteran leaders like Malikarjun Kharge and Deve Gowda were humbled by BJP leaders with seemingly lower profiles. Even in Kolar, seven-time MP KH Muniyappa has been defeated by Muniswamy of the BJP, who until recently was a BBMP corporator. The BJP’s overwhelming victory has now set off speculation over whether CM HD Kumaraswamy will resign from his position. Here is a list of the results seat wise Tumakuru: BJP's GS Basavaraju wins; JD(S) HD Deve Gowda loses Bengaluru South: BJP's Tejasvi Surya wins; Congress' BK Hariprasad loses Bengaluru North: BJP's DV Sadananda Gowda wins; Congress' Krishna Byre Gowda loses Bengaluru Central: BJP's PC Mohan wins; Congress' Rizwan Arshad loses Bengaluru Rural: Congress' DK Suresh wins; BJP's Ashwath Narayana Gowda loses Mandya: Independent candidate Sumalatha wins; JD(S)' Nikhil Kumaraswamy loses Chikkaballapura: BJP’s Bachegowda wins; Congress' Veerappa Moily loses Chitradurga:  BJP's A Narayana Swamy wins; Congress BN Chandrappaloses Hassan: JD(S)' Prajwal Revanna wins; BJP's A Manju loses Vijayapura: BJP's Ramesh Jigajigani wins; JD(S)' Sunitha Chavan loses Kalaburgi: Dr Umesh Jadav wins; Congress' Mallikarjun Kharge loses Bidar: BJP's Bhagwanth Khuba wins; Congress' Eshwar Khandre loses Ballari: BJP's Devendrappa wins; Congress' VS Ugrappa loses Haveri: BJP's Shivakumar Channabasappa Udasi wins; Congress' DR Patil loses Dharwad: BJP's Prahallad Joshi wins; Congress' Vinay Kulkarni loses Davangere: BJP GM Siddeshwara wins; Congress' HB Majappa loses Shivamogga: BJP's BY Raghavendra wins; JD(S)' Madhu Bangarappa loses Udupi-Chikkamagaluru: BJP’s Shobha Karandlaje wins; JD(S)' Pramod Madhwaraj loses Dakshina Kannada: BJP’s Nalin Kumar Kateel wins; Congress' Mithun Rai loses Belagavi: BJP's Suresh Angadi wins; Congress' Virupaksha Sadhunnavar loses Raichur: BJP Raja Amaresh Nayak wins; Congress' BV Nayak loses Koppal: BJP's Sanganna Karadi wins; Congress' Rajashekat Hitnal loses Uttara Kannada: BJP's Anantkumar Hegde wins; JD(S) Anand Aasnotikar loses Chikkodi: BJP's Annasaheb Jolle wins; Congress' Prakash Hukkeri loses Bagalkot: BJP's Parvatagouda Gaddigoudar wins; Congress' Veena Kashappanavar loses Mysuru-Kodagu: BJP's Pratap Simha  wins; Congress' CH Vijayshankar loses Chamarajanagara: BJP's V Srinivas Prasad wins; Congress' Dhruvanarayana loses Kolar: BJP's S Muniswamy  wins; Congress' KH Muniyappa  loses

After BJP sweeps K'taka, HD Kumaraswamy calls for informal meeting of ministers on Friday

Elections 2019
According to sources, the cabinet meeting is a final effort to hold the JD(S) - Congress government together after both parties suffered a crushing defeat.
Hours after the BJP swept Karnataka in the Lok Sabha elections, Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has called for an informal meeting of ministers on Friday, May 24 to discuss the future of the JD(S)-Congress government in the State. Speculations are rife that the coalition government will be toppled after BJP grabbed 25 out of the 28 seats in the State, with JD(S) and Congress winning 1 seat each.   Kumaraswamy will also hold a JD(S) legislative party meeting on Friday, at the party's Bengaluru office after the cabinet meeting. The meeting will be held to discuss the results of the parliamentary elections, JD(S) spokespersons confirmed. Whispers within political circles hint that opposition leaders want CM Kumaraswamy to step down from the post. The cabinet meeting has been confirmed in a last ditch effort to keep the JD(S)-Congress coalition government together. The BJP witnessed an unprecedented victory winning 25 out of the 28 constituencies. JD(S) and Congress seats have been reduced to 2 seats with both parties winning just one seat each. Congress candidate DK Suresh has won from Bengaluru rural and JD(S) candidate Prajwal Revanna who is the grandson of party supremo HD Deve Gowda won from Hassan. In Mandya, independent candidate Sumalatha won with an impressive majority, defeating the Chief Minister's son Nikhil Kumaraswamy. The election results also saw the defeat of political giants such as JD(S) Supremo HD Devegowda in Tumakuru. In Gulbarga, veteran Congress politician Mallikarjun Kharge who has never lost an election in his political career ceded defeat to protege Umesh Jadhav, who defected to the BJP. Former CM and senior Congress leader M Veeramoily Moily lost to BJP's BN Bache Gowda in Chikkaballapura. The sweeping victory of the BJP in the state has cast doubts on the ruling coalition holding together for the rest of the term. With serious infighting and historic rivalry between the party cadres, the Congress - JD(S) combine has been, at best, able to sustain an unstable government.

Sacrifice for grandsons proves costly for Deve Gowda, he loses Tumkur

Lok Sabha 2019
After winning as an MLA six times and as an MP six times, 87-year-old HD Deve Gowda has lost.
A man who has been the country’s Prime Minister and Karnataka Chief Minister, the grand patriarch of a party that is part of the ruling coalition in Karnataka- HD Deve Gowda has suffered his third ever loss in his long political career. After winning as an MLA six times and as an MP six times, 87-year-old HD Deve Gowda has lost in the Tumkur constituency of Karnataka. And what is most ironic is that Deve Gowda had vacated his safe seat for his grandson, to further the dynasty in the state. Deve Gowda had to give up his home constituency -- Hassan to his grandson Prajwal Revanna. The veteran politician was mulling over contesting from Mandya. However, his other grandson Nikhil was fielded from the segment as it is a stronghold of the JD(S). While Prajwal has won from his seat, Nikhil has lost. Read: Prajwal Revanna wins in Hassan, follows in Deve Gowda's footsteps Read: Sumalatha emerges victorious, defeats JD(S)-Congress might in Mandya BJP’s GS Basavaraj, the Lingayat strongman and four-time MP from the region, has managed to defeat Deve Gowda, by securing a wafer-thin majority. Basavaraj had managed to get 5,96,127 votes while Deve Gowda got 582788 votes. The margin is just above 13,000 votes. A constituency, which rarely elects the sitting MP to power, Tumkur was viewed as a challenge for the Congress-JD(S) alliance, especially since the Congress had won the seat in 2014. “Deve Gowda contesting from Tumkur was a good thing as it became easier for me. He was the mannina maga (son of the soil) in Hassan but he betrayed the people of Tumkur. He fought tooth and nail so people of Tumkur do not get the water they need. I thank all the party workers and leaders who worked hard for my victory. This is a win for Prime Minister Modi,” GS Basavaraj told TNM. Basavaraj is contesting for the eighth time from Tumkur. He contested and won on a Congress ticket in 1984, 1989 and 1999. However, he quit the Congress and joined the BJP ahead of the Lok Sabha elections in 2009 and won the seat. 77-year-old Basavaraj put up a strong fight against Deve Gowda, especially after he began telling his constituents that Deve Gowda had denied the people of Tumkur water. During Basavaraj’s election campaign, BJP leaders had said on many occasions that the people of Tumkur must not trust the Congress-JD(S) coalition as Deve Gowda was personally responsible for the district’s water woes. Basavaraj alleged that Deve Gowda had issued specific instructions to his son and the Karnataka Minister for Public Works, HD Revanna to not release water for Tumkur (24 TMC) from the Hemavati Dam, and instead divert it to Hassan, which is Deve Gowda’s home turf.   Deve Gowda retaliated with like a veteran and reminded the constituents of the contributions he made as the Minister for Public Works and Irrigation in 1982. Deve Gowda also reminded the people that it was he, who had resigned from his post as Irrigation Minister, when the government refused to carry out the projects he recommended. However, he was considered an outsider in Tumkur and failed to gather the support of the electorate. Speculation was rife that Deve Gowda, a Vokkaliga would fail to garner the votes of the dominant Lingayat community, the Dasa-Vokkaliga community and the votes of Dalits in Tumkur. It was not just the caste equation that JD(S) used to bank on which seems to have failed for Deve Gowda, but a strong Modi factor too has helped the BJP surge in the constituency. Other than this, former Congress MP Muddahanumegowda who was not offered a ticket to contest from Tumkur this time around as the party had offered the seat to its alliance partner – the JD(S). Supporters of Muddahanumegowda had openly rebelled against Deve Gowda and speculation was rife that they even worked against him, ultimately leading to his defeat.

BJP’s Tejasvi Surya defeats Congress veteran BK Hariprasad in Bengaluru South

Lok Sabha 2019
Defeating Rajya Sabha MP and veteran Congress leader BK Hariprasad, Tejasvi Surya has managed to retain the bastion of the BJP in Bengaluru.
In one of the most closely watched and controversial poll battles in Karnataka, 28-year-old Tejasvi Surya from BJP won in the Bengaluru South constituency by a huge margin of 3,31,192 votes. Defeating Rajya Sabha MP and veteran Congress leader BK Hariprasad, Tejasvi Surya has managed to retain the bastion of the BJP in Bengaluru. Tejasvi Surya secured 7,39,229 votes, while BK Hariprasad won 4,08,037 votes. The scale of victory in #BengaluruSouth was possible because of the support & blessings of Sri BS Yeddyurappa, Sri R Ashok, Sri V Somanna, Sri Ravi Subramanya, Sri Satish Reddy & Sri Uday Garudachar. Along with them, thousands of karyakartas sweated it out 20 hrs for 20 days. — Chowkidar Tejasvi Surya (@Tejasvi_Surya) May 23, 2019 Handpicked by the national BJP leadership to contest from this crucial constituency, Tejasvi was not the natural choice for the BJP’s state leadership. Initially, Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, the wife of late Union Minister Ananth Kumar, was the candidate chosen. However, in an eleventh-hour decision, due to the backing of the RSS, Tejasvi was chosen to contest from Bengaluru South. While the state BJP leadership rooted for Tejaswini Ananth Kumar, RSS leaders in the state like BL Santhosh had backed Tejasvi Surya's candidature from the constituency. With a sizable population of Brahmins and upper caste Hindus in the region, Bengaluru South has been the base for RSS operations in the city for over two decades. The constituency also has a large chunk of Vokkaliga and OBC communities, who have leaned towards the RSS and BJP. In order to maintain the voter base, the BJP had decided that it would give importance to supporting the RSS in the region by fielding Tejasvi Surya. The BJP has retained the Bengaluru South seat since 1991 when its candidate K Venkatagiri Gowda won the elections. In 1996, Ananth Kumar, who passed away last year, won the seat and ensured that he won all subsequent elections ever since.   Tejasvi’s candidature has been mired in controversy, as soon after he was fielded by the BJP, his old tweets surfaced, which many found problematic. For instance, he had openly advocated for making BJP an outright Hindu party and consolidating the Hindu vote, and had said that anyone who didn’t follow PM Modi was anti-national. He also received flak for his opposition to reservation for women in Parliament and was accused by an entrepreneur from Bengaluru of physical harassment, who later deleted her tweets and asked for the matter to be laid to rest. A former Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) and Yuva Morcha leader, Tejasvi participated in the ‘Mangalore Chalo’ bike rally ahead of the Karnataka state Assembly elections in 2018. Tejasvi Surya is an alumnus of National College (Jayanagar) and National Law School of India in Bengaluru.

Congress veteran Mallikarjun Kharge faces historic defeat at the hands of protege Umesh

Lok Sabha 2019
Kharge is a nine-time MLA from Chittapur and two-time MP from Gulbarga.
The results of the Lok Sabha elections for the Gulbarga segment has delivered a massive blow to veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge. Dr Umesh Jadav, the BJP candidate from Gulbarga has emerged a giant slayer, winning with a margin of almost one lakh votes. A nine-time MLA from Chittapur segment in Gulbarga and a two-time MP from Gulbarga Lok Sabha constituency, 76-year-old Mallikarjun Kharge had remained undefeated in every election he had contested in prior to 2019. “Our party’s incumbent MLAs and zilla panchayat leaders and cadre worked very hard to help me win. I want to convey my heartfelt thanks to them. Although they worked hard, their efforts did not bear fruit. We have to respect the decision of the people in a democracy. If any of the leaders and cadre are disgruntled, we will try to bring them back. We will try to strengthen our party,” Mallikarjun Kharge said. With the exception of the 1996 and 1998 Lok Sabha elections, the Gulbarga seat has always remained a stronghold of the Congress party. With the BJP lacking good candidates to field, as the heavyweights of the region were allied with Kharge, the Congress had maintained its edge in the segment. With Kharge’s friends turning foes and Congress loyalists defecting to the BJP, the fight became difficult for the grand old party. Kharge had been severely disadvantaged in Gulbarga after several Congress heavyweights including Mallikayya Guttedar the MLA from Afzalpur and a leader of the Ediga community, and Baburao Chinchasur MLA of the Gurmitkal segment and a leader of the Koli community joined the BJP ahead of the Karnataka Assembly elections. Soon after these defections, Umesh Jadav, former MLA of Chincholi too deserted the Congress. Kharge, who served as the Union Labour Minister in 2009, won the Gulbarga segment once more in 2014 with a huge margin of 74,700 votes. However, this time, the competition was stiff as Guttedar, Chinchasur and Jadav, who belong to dominant communities in Gulbarga were working against Kharge. Kharge was accused of promoting and favouring his son – Priyank Kharge over senior leaders from Gulbarga. This led to Mallikayya Guttedar, Baburao Chinchasur and Umesh Java quitting the party. When the coalition government came to power in 2018, Umesh Jadav expected to be given a cabinet berth. However, the portfolio was given to Priyank, who is only a two-time MLA whilst Jadav is a senior leader in the party. Similarly, in a run up to the Assembly elections in 2018, Chinchasur and Guttedar had defected to the BJP, alleging that Kharge did not appreciate them and was only interested in promoting his son Priyank. In the last few months, Kharge had managed to make a few prominent BJP leaders in the area leave the party and join the Congress instead. While Kharge had the support of a majority of Dalits and minorities, Jadav was banking on the votes of the Banjara community and the Lingayats who have largely aligned with the BJP. Lingayats form the biggest chunk of voters in Gulbarga. While Jadav had campaigned using the Modi factor, Kharge had appealed to the sympathy of Gulbarga’s voters. Time and again, Kharge had stressed that this would be his last election. In a speech he gave at a gathering in Sedam, Kharge had said, “The people of Kalburgi have elected me in the last 11 elections I contested. This time too, I am confident they will elect me. This will be my last election.” But it seems Kharge’s confidence did not help him to win the seat.
