Air India Express that veered off taxiway was speeding: Mangalore airport officials

Accident
Air India Express flight from Dubai to Mangaluru with 183 passengers veered off the taxiway onto the grass at Mangalore International Airport on Sunday.
Airport authorities at the Mangalore International Airport stated that the incident of an Air India Express aircraft veering off the main taxiway while landing on Sunday was caused by over speeding. At 6 pm on Sunday, the IX384 Air India Express aircraft travelling from Dubai to Mangaluru veered off the taxiway and onto the grass at the Mangalore International Airport before skidding to a halt on a patch of mud and grass. All 183 passengers and six crew members aboard the plane were safe. Read: Air India Express plane with 183 passengers veers off taxiway at Mangaluru, all safe Speaking to TNM, Mangalore International Airport Director VV Rao said, "The pilot, while attempting to land, could not establish a stable approach so the aircraft circled the runway and landed in the second attempt. The aircraft skid after the pilot was unable to control the speed while turning from the runway to the taxiway. The pilot has to slow down and turn into the taxiway. If the aircraft is fast, a 90-degree turn is not possible so it is because of speed this has happened." The runway is the surface on which aircraft land and take off while the taxiway connects the runway and the area where the aircraft is parked and passengers board or de-board. Rao further added that operations at the airport were suspended for two hours on Sunday. It is now back up and running even at the taxiway where the incident occurred. He also stated that the tabletop runway at the airport did not cause the incident. "There is a lot of discussion about the tabletop runway but that had nothing to do with the incident since it occurred only on the taxiway. In fact, all operations are functional at the airport and we managed to continue running despite rains this morning," added Rao. The Mangalore International Airport is located in Bajpe, around 10 km from Mangaluru city. It lies on top of a hill with steep drops at the end of its runways known as tabletop runway. Despite the airport authorities attempt to play down infrastructure concerns, the latest incident raises fresh questions about the airport. Mohan Ranganathan, a former instructor pilot and an aviation safety expert, told TNM that the airport authorities should not preempt discussion about the incident and wait for the investigations to be completed. "It appears from the video posted by a passenger that this is a case of an aircraft approaching the taxiway at high speeds and the pilot has tried to turn from the runway to the taxiway. However, airport authorities should wait for the full investigation report and not preempt discussion on the incident. It is clear that Mangalore International Airport is not safe and airport authorities are trying to avoid criticism over the incident," he said. The incident evoked memories of the crash at the Mangalore International Airport which killed 158 people in 2010. A Boeing 737-800 aircraft overshot the runway and plunged down a gorge at the end of it. Investigations revealed that the pilot was asleep when the crash occurred. The cockpit voice recorder picked up the sound of the pilot snoring before the crash.

Two Karnataka Congress MLAs resign in a day, Ramesh Jarkiholi is the latest

Politics
Ramesh's resignation comes as no surprise as he had earlier suggested that he will quit the Congress and join the BJP.
On the day Vijayanagara MLA Anand Singh confirmed his resignation from the Karnataka Assembly, Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi followed suit, casting fresh doubts about the future of the coalition government in the state. Ramesh's resignation comes as no surprise and ends months of speculation about his future. He submitted a handwritten letter to the Governor stating that he is resigning from his position as MLA of Gokak constituency. In April, he had said that he was "technically with the Congress" suggesting that an announcement on his future was imminent. He had also stated that he will resign and contest as the BJP candidate from Yemkanmardi, the constituency from which his brother Satish Jarkiholi won in the Assembly Elections in 2018. Ramesh was also seen campaigning for the BJP candidate in Chikkodi during the Lok Sabha Elections. Reports suggested that Congress MLAs B Nagendra and Mahesh Kumathalli are set to follow Ramesh and Anand Singh with their own resignations from the Karnataka Assembly. In February, Congress moved a petition with Speaker Ramesh Kumar seeking to disqualify Ramesh. He was dropped from the Karnataka cabinet in 2018.  Ramesh Jarkiholi's issues in the Congress goes back to the party's handling of his complaints against DK Shivakumar's growing influence in Belagavi. Ramesh had stated that DK Shivakumar was interfering in the working of the Belagavi Congress through his trusted aide and Belagavi Rural MLA Laxmi Hebbalkar. The strength of the coalition government is down to 117 with Ramesh's resignation. Congress has 78 MLAs, the JD(S) has 37 MLAs and there is 1 BSP MLA. Two independent MLAs - R Shankar from Ranebennur and H Nagesh from Mulbagal constituencies - are also supporting the coalition. Meanwhile, the BJP has 105 MLAs in the Karnataka Assembly. The majority mark in the Assembly is 113. Both the resignations come at a time when Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is in the US and is set to return on July 8. "I have been observing all the affairs of the state especially the BJP's attempt to destabilize our government. It will remain a dream for them," he tweeted.  Read: Karnataka Congress MLA Anand Singh resigns, coalition number down to 118 Ramesh was first elected as the MLA of Gokak on  a Janata Dal (United) ticket in 1999. But since 2004, he has contested the polls as a member of the Congress party.

Karnataka Congress MLA Anand Singh resigns, coalition number down to 118

Politics
The resignation comes even as Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is currently in the US till July 8.
Congress MLA from Ballari, Anand Singh has resigned from the Karnataka Assembly on Monday. Anand met Assembly Speaker KR Ramesh Kumar at his residence in Bengaluru and later confirmed his resignation to reporters. Anand also submitted a letter to the Governor confirming his resignation.  "With reference to the above cited subject (Resignation from Karnataka Assembly), I submitted my resignation to the Honourable Speaker on July 1, 2019, 7.15am at his residence. This is for your kind information and requeste further necessary action," read the letter. When the media asked what the reason behind his resignation was, he said, "For me, the reason is the injustice being meted out to my district. On June 17, I told reporters in Ballari and my requests have not been given a response. I had written to the government against the land being given to Jindla group. The government should set things right even if previous governments have done deals like this." He also said that he had asked the government to make Vijayanagara a district on its own. Anand was elected as the MLA of Vijayanagar in Ballari district in the 2018 Karnataka Assembly elections. His decision to resign set off speculation that more unhappy MLAs in the Congress party will follow suit, particularly MLAs close to Ramesh Jarkiholi including Mahesh Kumathalli and B Nagendra are set to resign.    The strength of the coalition in the Assembly is down to 118 with Anand's resignation. Congress has 79 MLAs, the JD(S) has 37 MLAs and there is 1 BSP MLA. Two independent MLAs - R Shankar from Ranebennur and H Nagesh from Mulbagal constituencies - are also supporting the coalition. The BJP has 105 MLAs in the Assembly. Umesh Jadhav previously resigned and defected to the BJP. He also defeated veteran Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge in the Lok Sabha elections in May. Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy is currently in the US and is set to return on July 8. "I have been observing all the affairs of the state especially the BJP's attempt to destabilize our government. It will remain a dream for them," he said. ರಾಜ್ಯದಲ್ಲಿ ಸರ್ಕಾರವನ್ನು ಅಸ್ಥಿರಗೊಳಿಸುವ #BJP ಯ ಪ್ರಯತ್ನ 'ನಿರಂತರ ಹಗಲುಗನಸು' — H D Kumaraswamy (@hd_kumaraswamy) July 1, 2019 Anand Singh briefly went incommunicado after the results of the Karnataka Assembly elections threw up a hung verdict last year. He was not among the Congress MLAs herded into the Eagleton Resort in Bidadi in Ramanagara ahead of the trust vote in the Assembly. However, he later surfaced and gave his support to the Congress. In January 2019, he was assaulted by fellow MLA JN Ganesh at the Eagleton Resort on another occasion Congress MLAs were cooped up there.  Recently, Anand Singh opposed the Karnataka government's proposal to go ahead with the absolute sale deed of iron-rich land in Ballari to Jindal’s JSW Limited at a throwaway price. Anand, had only joined the Congress from the BJP in January 2018 and was previously Tourism Minister in the BJP government that ruled the state from 2008-2013.

Seven arrested at Bengaluru airport after illegal stay in Malaysia

Immigration
The arrests were made between June 26 and June 29 and in some cases, the arrested person overstayed in Malaysia for more than a decade on a tourist visa.
Immigration officials at the Kempegowda International Airport (KIA) in Bengaluru arrested seven people who visited Malaysia on a tourist visa but overstayed for years. The arrests were made between June 26 and June 29 and in some cases, the arrested person overstayed in Malaysia for more than a decade.  Most of the accused persons hail from Tamil Nadu and were working in Malaysia. Their visas was found to have been altered illegally before they entered India, according to a report by Deccan Herald. Officials further suspect that there are a number of people who have been lured with lucrative jobs to Malaysia but are taken on a short-stay visa. Officials say they are forced to work illegally before they are sent back with fake visas.  Investigations have begun to identify the people behind this racket. Venkatesan Jayasimha, 23, from Cuddalore and Sathesh Sethu, 28 from Methupaly, revealed that they visited Malaysia in 2017 after they were advised by a tout. The other persons arrested are Mahimairaj Sathish Kumar, 28, from Namakkal; Josephin Selvarasu, 34, from Thanjavur; Senthilvelan Thiruvasagamoorthy, 40; and Onkar Singh, 23, from Ludhiana.  “During their stay, the accused would send money to their family through illegal means. According to the police, some of the arrested persons have been working in Malaysia for as long as 14 years. Some even surrendered their passports and documents to work.

Security guard at IISc in Bengaluru killed after sliding gate crashes on him

Gowtham Biswal, who started his shift at 6 am on Sunday, died on the spot, while two others were injured in the incident.
A security guard at the Indian Institution of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, was killed after a newly installed iron gate at the entrance of the premises of the institution collapsed on him on Sunday afternoon. Gowtham Biswal, who hails from Odisha, died on the spot while two others - Anil Kumar (37) from Bihar and Vinayak (40) from Odisha - were injured in the incident.  According to the police, 26-year-old Gowtham began working as a security guard at the IISc three years ago. He started his shift at 6 am on Sunday, but around 1 pm, when Gowtham opened the gate to the main entrance of the IISc building for a car to enter, the sliding gate derailed and crashed on him. Two other guards, who rushed to help Gowtham, were also injured after they failed to lift and hold the gate, reported Deccan Chronicle.  Gowtham sustained severe injuries on his forehead and died on the spot while the others were rushed to a nearby hospital. The sliding gate weighed around 500 kg and was 6 feet high and 14 feet long. It was installed recently at the entrance of the IISc premises.  Another guard, an eyewitness to the tragedy, told the New Indian Express, on condition of anonymity: “This gate operates on a bearing to gather support. There are two gates that should not be opened completely, as they fall due to lack of support. These were in the process of being replaced when someone slid them beyond the safe point. Since it was a Sunday, there were only security guards, else the number of casualties could have been higher, with students or faculty members getting injured or killed.” The police officials at Sadashivanagar police station are investigating the incident and have taken up a case of causing death due to negligence against the engineer who made the gate. “The matter is under investigation. We are ascertaining what led to the tragedy and who was at fault for it," a police official told the Times of India.  The Indian Institute of Science is located on CV Raman Road in Bengaluru and was established as a public institute for research and higher education science, engineering and design.
