Volunteers rescued a two-and-a-half-month labrador puppy from her pet parents in Bengaluru after it emerged that she was not being looked after and was suffering from nutritional deficiency. Women who lived in a PG opposite the house in Koramangala highlighted the issue through a Facebook group after which the puppy was rescued and taken to  CUPA (Compassion Unlimited Plus Action) in Sarjapur where it is currently being treated with nutritional supplements and a good diet. A case was also filed against the owners of the pet under section 11 of The Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960. As per the Act, if the owner “neglects to exercise or cause to be exercised reasonably any dog habitually chained up or kept in close confinement”, they can be punished with a fine or imprisonment up to three months. Photographs and videos published on the Facebook group 'Anirmal Rescue Bangalore' showed that the puppy was kept chained in an area where there was no shelter from rain. Rescuers found that the puppy had not been given a bath or timely food and water. Her nutrients and calcium levels were found to be low and her collar was so tight it had to be cut open to be removed, a rescuer told Times of India. According to officials at CUPA's Second Chance Adoption center in Bengaluru, one of the main reasons dogs are abandoned is because people often aren’t aware that there are animal organisations which care for dogs. Even when people are aware, there is often a  cost associated with leaving the animal at a shelter, which can also be a deterrent. At the center, pets are given a physical health checkup before they are deemed ready for adoption again.  Read: Trauma and heartbreak: What happens to abandoned dogs in Bengaluru

Bengaluru police arrest suspect of failed heist at jewellery store

Crime
He is the prime suspect in the case related to the attempted robbery at Samrat Jewellers in Vyalikaval that occurred on August 21.
Bengaluru police arrested Prahlad Kailash Chowdhary, the suspect in the botched robbery at Samrat Jewels in the city on August 21. Prahlad was arrested from his Pune residence on Sunday. He is the prime suspect in the case related to the attempted robbery at Samrat Jewellers located on Palace Guttahalli Main Road in Vyalikaval. He is accused of planning the heist and training four associates for it, reported Deccan Herald. “As per Prahlad’s plan, gang members stole two bikes to commit the crime. He was not part of the team that struck Samrat Jewels and he fled to Pune after learning that his associates had failed to execute the plan. A probe is on to know whether Prahlad is behind any other robberies reported in Bengaluru or other places," a police official told Times of India. Vyalikaval police had earlier arrested Balvan Singh, 24, Balaji Gaikwad, 25, Sriram Bishnoi, 23 and Om Prakash, 22, hours after the attempted robbery. After interrogating the suspects, police were led to Prahlad who allegedly formed the gang, took a house on rent and spent money to ensure their daily needs and provide logistical support for the plan. The accused arrived at the store around 2:30 pm on August 21. They demanded the owner Ashish to hand over a particular design of gold chains. One of the accused fired a shot with a pistol to threaten the owner and his wife Rakhi who were present at the store. However, Rakhi hurled a chair at the gunmen and Ashish screamed for help forcing the robbers to flee.

Bengaluru police raid two pubs for playing loud music, DJ arrested

Law and Order
The raids come two months after the Karnataka High Court pulled up the police for its casual approach to complaints of high noise levels from pubs in residential areas.
The Central Crime Branch (CCB) police raided a hotel in Bengaluru where a party was organised and loud music was played till 4 am on Sunday. Police arrested the DJ Tambe Danial Atem, a Cameroon national, even as several others left the scene. Police stated that the raid was conducted by officials of the women and narcotics squad of the CCB on RG Royal Hotel near the Iskcon temple in Mahalakshmi Layout after receiving information that a rave party was organised and illegal drugs was supplied. “When we raided the place, loud music beyond permissible limits was being played at the venue located on the sixth floor. It was gross violation of the excise permit to keep the hotel open till such late hours and playing loud music without permission. There were more than 150 customers, including about 50 foreigners. The party went on till 4 am and we immediately arrested the DJ identified as Tambe Danial Atem,” a senior police officer said speaking to The New Indian Express. But while the police seized the sound system, DJ console and cash, they were unable to recover evidence of the supply of drugs at the party. Owner of the hotel Ravish Gowda, general manager Venkatesh, manager Sebastian and event manager Saleem are currently absconding and police officials are attempting to trace them. In a parallel raid, a team of police officials raided By Chance Bar and Restaurant on Brigade Road on Saturday late night for playing loud music. The police arrested KR Rajanna (58) and James John (44) and also seized music equipment for violating rules, reported Deccan Herald. The raids come two months after the Karnataka High Court pulled up the police for its casual approach to taking action on complaints of high noise levels from pubs in residential areas. The police was criticised for conducting an inspection of noise levels in the evening and for failing to use suitable devices to measure the sound. Following a directive from the High Court, police officials conducted a fresh inspection in June. The details of the inspection are yet to be made public. The High Court is currently hearing a petition filed by Defence Colony Residents’ Association asking police to limit music played in pubs in Bengaluru that are located in residential areas.

Bengaluru Airport to use plastics seized by civic body to lay roads within its premises

Civic
Experts for long have advocated the use of plastics in building roads considering how it insulates the road from damage caused by waterlogging and is cost-effective.
Representational image
As part of its move to implement the ban on single-use plastics, the city’s civic body, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), has seized numerous plastics from various shops. Now, what happens to these plastics that have been seized? Well,  the Bengaluru International Airport has come up with a solution - use these plastics as an additive while laying roads.    The airport, which is undergoing expansion, will take over the plastics seized by BBMP to lay the roads within its premises. A formal handover event will take place at the BBMP headquarters on Monday at 4 pm. There will also be a meeting between BBMP Commissioner BH Anil Kumar, BBMP Mayor Gangambike Malikarjun, Deputy Chief Project Officer Raju Kaval and, Vice-President of Special Projects of the Kempegowda International Airport, Sundar Chandramouli.    Two trucks of over two tonnes of seized plastic will be taken to the airport after the event. Officials in the BBMP said that this was also a way to ensure that the seized plastics do not go back to the environment and will be given free of cost to the airport authorities.  Experts for long have advocated the use of plastics in laying roads, considering how it insulates the road from damage caused by waterlogging and reduces costs. Also read: Heard about miracle "plastic roads"? Here's why it's not a solution to our plastic problem Even the National Rural Roads Development Agency notes, “Plastic roads are found to perform better compared to those constructed with conventional bitumen. Further, it has been found that such roads were not subjected to stripping when they come in contact with water”. While BBMP is giving away the seized plastics to the airport authorities, officials within the BBMP admitted that there has not been widespread use of plastic in making the city's roads. This is despite the fact that some roads in the city (for example, inside Bangalore University’s Jnana Bharathi campus) were laid with plastics and showed better durability than traditionally built roads. The BBMP has seized around 4,000 kg of plastics since January 2019. Starting September 1, the BBMP is going to impose its existing ban on using plastics under stringent rules of Solid Waste Management, 2019. Under these rules, officials can also suspend the trade license or shut down shops for repeat violations.

‘Most wanted’ conman with 14 duping cases in 8 states arrested in Mangaluru

Crime
For years, 53-year-old Sam Peter posed as a National Crime Investigation Bureau director and used conning, intimidation and arm-twisting tactics to fleece money from people.
When Mangaluru city police apprehended Sam Peter (real name Antony) for posing as an NCIB director along with seven others, little did they have a clue that they had in their hooks one of the ‘most wanted’ accused by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and Interpol. The 53-year-old suspect was wanted by several states for allegedly duping people, banks, financial institutions and allied organisations. Allegedly a serial offender, police officials found at least seven aliases of Antony, including Rahul Peter in Kodagu, Karnataka, Sam Peter in Maharashtra, along with Rajesh Robinson, Reethu Richard, Roy Jacob, Robin Richardson and Richard Robinson at various other places. “He successfully withheld his real name Antony, even as he was fraudulently able to procure two passports, one carrying the name Rajesh Robinson from Kerala (Passport No. A626921) and another as a resident of Odisha by the name of Sam Peter (Passport No. M 4929462),” Mangaluru Commissioner of Police Dr PS Harsha said. So far, investigators in collaboration with the CBI have discovered over 14 different registered cases against Antony across India, including in Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra, making him as a ‘proclaimed offender’. “Besides borrowing money from people and not repaying, Antony also used to abduct people using his bodyguards and collect ransom using threat and intimidation. However, none of the victims have filed a complaint against him,” the Commissioner said. Police officials said that for years Sam Peter has been posing as an NCIB (National Crime Investigation Bureau) director in Karnataka and using his conning, intimidation and arm-twisting tactics to fleece money from a lot of people. Spilling details of his modus operandi, Antony said while posing as NCIB director, he got acquainted with a Bengaluru based lawyer named Muzzafar Ahmed. “Carrying out a kind of ‘parallel policing’, the duo would take up people’s ‘complaints’ on money related matters assuring them that they would privately investigate and resolve it. For this, the duo and its team collected a hefty fee from the ‘clients’,” the Commissioner said. In this backdrop, Bengaluru Customs had confiscated gold smuggled by a person named Dubai Sharif. Sharif contacted lawyer Muzzafar, who advised him to pay Rs 1.7 crore to Girish Rai and Imtiyaz to ensure that a case is not registered. However, the Customs department booked a case, therefore causing loss to Sharif who demanded a refund of the amount from Muzzafar. Subsequently, Muzzafar directed Sam Peter to go to Mangaluru and kidnap Girish and Imtiyaz and recover the money. It was then that Antony teamed up with TK Bopanna (33), Madan (41), Chinnappa (38), Sunil Raju (35), Kodandarama (39), G Mohiddin (70) and Abdul Lathif (59) for the abduction and recovery of the amount. But before executing their plan, they were arrested. A case of violating the Arms Act and misuse of the state emblem has been registered against Antony at the Mangaluru East Police Station. Tech savvy Antony was very meticulous and did not even register a SIM in his name. He had created a fake video of a raid conducted by his team and used to intimidate people with the same. He even used to SMS a fake number of senior police officials and show the frequency of interaction with police higher-ups to his unsuspecting victims to validate his claims. He also took pictures with celebrities and renowned personalities by introducing himself as an NCIB director. In a separate case, police are also investigating Antony’s role in abducting a prominent GSB leader and a Swamiji from Kerala on the behest of a businessman named Ramachandra Nayak from Udupi. Police have already arrested Nayak. Besides this, police have found other cases against Antony from Chikkamagaluru, Mangaluru, Yelahanka new town, Dibburahalli and Chikkaballapur district under several charges including violating the Arms Act and are investigating. The Interpol had issued a Red Corner notice against him in 1998, the Commissioner informed. While the police have procured a nine-day custody of Antony, he is also being questioned by CBI and Interpol sleuths. In coordination with other stations from the state, the police have also arrested Antony’s associates for questioning. Story by www.storyinfinity.com (Subs and Scribes Media Ventures LLP).
