Award
Nanjundaswamy, who was born with a deformed left hand, has been reporting on civic issues, art & culture, science & technology, besides stories on people with special needs.
M Nanjundaswamy (27), who works as a journalist in the Mysuru Bureau of popular Kannada newspaper Vijaya Karnataka has been selected for the 4th G Santha Teacher Memorial Journalism Award. Nanjundaswamy was born with a deformed left hand but that did not deter him from pursuing his dream to become a journalist. Nanjundaswamy has been reporting on civic issues, art and culture, science and technology, besides focusing on stories of achievements of people with special needs. His series of reports on the crisis caused due to the dumping of garbage at Old Kesare area on the outskirts of Mysuru was appreciated by editors at Vijaya Karnataka.     “I write about such individuals as I wish to encourage them to scale greater heights. This honour has come very early in my career and probably is a reminder to me about the responsibilities I have as a journalist,” says Nanjundaswamy.  He is hoping to focus on more stories from rural areas in and around Mysuru.  The G Santha Teacher Memorial Journalism Award award is instituted by Inspired Indian Foundation (IIF) and will be presented on October 19 in Bengaluru during the 4th Guru Kalam Memorial Lecture being organised by IIF in association with Abdul Kalam International Foundation (AKIF), Rameswaram. The award includes a memento, a certificate of appreciation and Rs 21,000 in cash.  “Journalism is a very demanding profession and rarely do we find success stories of those with special needs from the news room. This recognition to Nanjundaswamy, a stringer with Vijay Karnataka, should encourage many others. We were keen that with every award we would want to open doors that were never looked at,” says Sindhu A, Founder Trustee of IIF. In 2016, Rekha Satheesh, a Senior Chief Sub-Editor with The New Indian Express, Kochi, was the first recipient of the award, while Rajeev Kumar Mishra, a Chief Sub-Editor with the Bengaluru edition of Rajasthan Patrika, won the honour in 2017. The Karnataka government will set up an Innovation Authority and a vision group for startups, Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan said addressing officials from the Information Technology (IT) and Biotechnology (BT) department and senior executives in IT and BT companies at an event in Bengaluru on Thursday.  "The Government of Karnataka will establish a 'Legal Framework for Innovation' with the aim to encourage new and emerging technologies in the state," Ashwath Narayan said. A Vision Group will also be created for startups in the state which will involve industrialists and academicians. The state government is set to introduce a draft bill to establish regulatory sandboxes in Karnataka. "We are working on a draft bill which proposes to establish a mechanism for the creation of regulatory sandboxes in Karnataka, which will broadly describe a set of conditions under which innovative technologies can be tested in a controlled testing environment by relaxing regulatory requirements," Ashwath Narayan added. A regulatory sandbox refers to live testing of new products or services in a controlled test environment for which regulators may (or may not) permit certain regulatory relaxations for the purpose of the testing. This allows regulators and innovators to conduct field tests and collect evidence on new innovations while monitoring risks. The Innovation Authority will be chaired by Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa and CN Ashwath Narayan. The details of the Innovation Authority will be announced at this year's Bengaluru Tech Summit (BTS), scheduled to be held from November 18-20 this year. The event will focus on startups and innovation with the theme of the event being 'Innovation and Impact'. Addressing the meeting, BS Yediyurappa said that the state government will urge companies to make investments in places other than Bengaluru like Mysuru, Mangaluru, Hubballi-Dharwad, Shivamogga and Belagavi. "The policy will focus on attracting investments and generating employment in Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities," Yediyurappa said. When asked whether Kannada-speaking residents of the state will be preferred for jobs in companies, Ashwath Narayan said, "Any city will have a confluence of talent from around the world and in the increased competition will only help innovation. We will also strive to increase the percentage of Kannadigas in the IT industry.” The idea for setting up an Innovation Authority was earlier brought up during former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy's tenure in 2018 but it did not come to fruition.

Congress leader DK Shivakumar sent to Tihar jail in money laundering case

Politics
The senior leader has allegedly been lodged in the same jail compound as former Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
Congress leader DK Shivakumar, who has been accused in a money laundering case, was sent to Tihar jail on Thursday. The senior party leader was undergoing treatment at RML Hospital and was taken to Tihar after being discharged from the hospital. In the meantime, Lakshmi Hebbalkar the Karnataka Congress MLA from Belagavi, appeared before the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in Delhi after she was summoned for questioning in connection to the case. The ED had been probing accusations of money laundering registered against DK Shivakumar since August 2017 when a cash amount of Rs 8.86 crores was found in the his New Delhi residence. He was arrested on September 3 after being accused of setting up hawala networks to launder money. A day later, he applied for bail which the ED rejected stating that Shivakumar would “influence witnesses.” KM Nataraj, the Additional Solicitor General representing the ED, stated that Shivakumar and his family members held more than 300 bank accounts altogether and had accused him of laundering over Rs 200 crore in cash. As part of the probe into the case back in 2017, the Income Tax Department found that some transactions made by the party leader were linked to Lakshmi Hebbalkar. Further, when the raids first took place on August 2, 2017, Shivakumar had made a phone call to Lakshmi. She had earlier been issued a summons by the ED to appear on September 14, but was unable to do so. The summons date was then pushed to September 19. Prior to this, DK Shivakumar’s daughter Aisshwarya appeared before the ED on September 12 and was questioned for seven hours in connection to the case. At the time, officials from the ED stated that she was being questioned about a trust fund set up in her name. The ED also interrogated her regarding the increase in her wealth between 2013 and 2018. Shivakumar declared that his daughter held assets worth Rs 108 crores, ahead of the 2018 Karnataka State Assembly Elections. However in 2013, she supposedly only had Rs 1.09 crores. The senior leader has been taken to Tihar jail where he has allegedly been lodged in the same jail compound as former Finance Minister P Chidambaram.

Popular Bengaluru hangout spot BFlat to shut shop on Oct 2, may return in new avatar

Police, at the end of August, had sent notices to 107 restaurants and pubs in Bengaluru for allegedly hosting live performances illegally.
Popular Bengaluru pub and bar BFlat and BTDT in Indiranagar, which hosted many music and stand-up comedy events, will pull down its shutters from October 2, the establishment announced. In a Facebook post, it said, “We regretfully announce that BFlat and BTDT Indiranagar, Bengaluru’s first dedicated live performance venue and loved restaurant (former Highnote), and home to many music lovers and foodies, closes its doors, effective October 2, 2019, after 10 and a half years of supporting the Arts.” “Positioned as a platform to showcase in particular the independent music scene, jazz and blues as well as stand-up comedy, BFlat has become an iconic institution... The venue hopes to return to Bangalore in a new avatar but under the prevailing conditions it's Goodbye for now (sic),” it added. Recently, the police started enforcing rules under Licensing and Controlling Places of Public Entertainment (Bangalore City) Order, 2005, which requires establishments to get licenses for entertainment programmes through the Bengaluru Commissioner's office. The Supreme Court upheld this order in January 2018 following a dispute. Read: 107 pubs in Bengaluru get notice for illegally hosting live music performances The announcement also comes after the Karnataka Fire Safety and Emergency Services Department in April, had filed a complaint against the owners of the building along with other establishments for ignoring fire safety norms. TNM had reported that the Fire Department was writing to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and the Bangalore Electric Supply Company (Bescom) directing them to withdraw occupancy certificate and cut power supply of thirty such roof-top pubs and restaurants for violating fire safety rules. The officials had then said that the step was taken after these owners had allegedly refused to take remedial steps even after four-five notices were sent to them. These actions were taken following the incident at Kailash Bar and Restaurant at the start of the year, where a 70-year old building in Kalasipalya in the city went up in flames, killing five people. Other than the fire safety norm violations, watering holes in Indiranagar have been facing the heat from local residents over the issue of violating zonal laws and setting up illegal commercial establishments in residential zones. The residents have also approached the Karnataka High Court on the issue of sound pollution because of these pubs in residential areas allegedly blaring music even late into the night

Bengaluru FC chooses Pune stadium as its ‘home’ venue owing to legal dispute

Sports
This is due to an ongoing court case regarding the use of the Kanteerava Stadium, which is shared by athletes of the Karnataka Athletics Association for practice and events.
Bengaluru FC, the current Indian Super League (ISL) champions have enlisted the Balewadi Stadium in Pune as its home venue in the 2019-20 season in the Indian Super League (ISL) and AFC Champions League. This is due to an ongoing court case regarding the use of the Kanteerava Stadium, which is shared by athletes of the Karnataka Athletics Association for practice and events. Football fans have been thronging to watch Bengaluru FC games in the stadium for the last five years now, with the attendance crossing 20,000 on some occasions. The 2018 ISL final was played at the Kanteerava stadium in which Bengaluru was beaten 3-2 by Chennaiyin FC. The club management was forced to shift from their current home at the heart of Bengaluru, with just a month to go for the start of the 2019-20 season, according to the conditions laid down by the AIFF club licensing.  "We have been forced to make this decision but we hope that all stakeholders can find an amicable solution to the issue and that we can play our home matches in Bengaluru,” a club official said. This announcement comes even as the club is trying to stay in Bengaluru and is exploring all possibilities to continue in the city. In a series of tweets, the club announced, “However, the club is working closely with all stakeholders involved to find an amicable solution, and ensure that Bengaluru FC plays its home games out of the Sree Kanteerava Stadium.” It added, “The city has been our Fortress, its people our strength and its glory, our endeavour. We hope to keep all of them intact.” Even Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya assured help and announced that he will take up this matter with the Chief Minister. He tweeted, “Our city's football club play 'home' matches elsewhere? This shouldn't be happening. As a @bengalurufc & @chetrisunil11 fan myself, I was looking forward to watching our #HeroISL champs at Kanteerava. I shall request Hon CM @BSYBJP, who holds the sports portfolio, to intervene.” Our city's football club play 'home' matches elsewhere? It feels a little heartbreaking to think that these moments may not happen in our city anymore. I'll definitely miss watching my team play. Here's hoping that a solution is found and I get to cheer my team at a place we call home,” Habil, a fan of the club, told TNM. The fortress is more than just a stadium to be because its where I saw my first ever @bengalurufc game and also a reason why I am the artist I am today. My family is a football loving family and we’re closer now because of this. I have faith in the club :) pic.twitter.com/aXwgjVFMVR — Varsha Raj (@Varshi_14) September 18, 2019   Since 2013, @bengalurufc has kept the Indian and Karnataka flags flying high, on the pitch and off it. The ‘Bengaluru’ in Bengaluru FC is not merely a moniker, it’s an identity. The gandaberunda in its crest is an embrace of the very core of Karunadu. — West Block Blues (@WestBlockBlues) September 18, 2019   Legal dispute Renowned athletes like Ashwini Nachappa, GG Prameela, and others  had gone to the High Court claiming that the stadium was originally built for athletics ahead of the 1997 National Games and BFC was allowed to continue using the stadium without any competitive bidding.   Subsequently, the HC had ordered the state government to conduct a probe into the manner in which the Sree Kanteerava stadium was allowed to be used by JSW Bengaluru Football Club for the past three years.

Defence Minister Rajnath Singh to fly in LCA Tejas over Bengaluru

Defence
"Singh will fly in the LCA's trainer as a familiarisation sortie from the HAL airport in the city's eastern suburb on Thursday morning," a defence official said.
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh will fly in the indigenous Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas over this tech hub on Thursday morning for a first-hand assessment of the 4th generation fighter, an official said on Wednesday. "Singh will fly in the LCA's trainer as a familiarisation sortie from the HAL airport in the city's eastern suburb on Thursday morning after a briefing by Indian Air Force (IAF) pilots," a defence official told IANS here. Designed and developed by the city-based Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) of the state-run Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and built by the aerospace behemoth Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL), the single engine, delta wing, multi-role fighter will be flown by a senior IAF pilot. "Before taking off for a 30-minute sortie, the pilots of the 45 Squadron Flying Daggers will acquaint the Defence Minister with the air prowess of the home-grown fighter, its avionics, controls and radar in the glass cockpit and the weapons it carries for strike power," said the official. The squadron is based at the Sulur air base near Coimbatore in southern Tamil Nadu. With final operational clearance (FoC), the IAF has inducted 16 weaponised LCAs into its combat fleet since June 2018 after its pilots validated its earlier version with initial operational clearance (IoC) by the military aviation regulator Cemilac in Bengaluru in December 2013. Though the IAF will initially have two squadrons of Tejas with 18 fighters each, it plans to have more squadrons with an additional 83 of them as Mark-1 version. Former Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman, however, flew in Sukhoi-30 MKI fighter of the IAF on January 17, 2008 from Jodhpur air base in Rajasthan. She was also the first woman Raksha Mantri to fly in a fighter as a "co-pilot". Former Presidents Pratibha Patil and A.P.J. Abdul Kalam also flew in Su-30 on November 25, 2009 and June 8, 2006 from Pune in western Maharashtra when in office as Supreme Commander of the armed forces. Pratibha was the first woman President and Kalam the first President to fly in a military fighter.
