Facing flak from Opposition, Karnataka CM offers additional aid for flood-hit farmers

Floods
An additional financial aid of Rs 10,000 for every hectare of crop loss has been announced for farmers hit by the floods.
In a bid to quell opposition criticism of the BJP-led Karnataka government's handling of flood relief works in the state, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa announced additional financial aid of Rs 10,000 for every hectare of crop loss suffered during the floods. Yediyurappa made the announcement while speaking in the Assembly on Friday during a debate on flood relief works. This was during the winter session of the Karnataka Assembly. Horticulture crops, irrigated land and dry land were included in the latest financial aid. "We provided all possible relief to flood victims within the funds available with the state government," Yediyurappa said. Yediyurappa added that Rs 5 lakh would be provided to each family which lost their homes in the floods. This includes property damage of over 75% as well. In all, almost 27,000 households will receive Rs 5 lakh as compensation. Yediyurappa claimed that Rs 1 lakh to build foundation of new homes has been sanctioned so far. The flood relief measures are expected to cost Rs 2,500 crore to the state exchequer. Opposition leaders have continuously criticised the government's lack of flood relief works. Recently appointed Leader of Opposition and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah claimed that the compensation being provided is 'too little too late'. He called for the floods that hit the state in August to be declared as a national calamity.  The Union government released Rs 1,200 crore as interim flood relief to the state earlier this month, over two months after the floods and landslides hit the state. The delay in handing out flood relief was criticised by opposition leaders from JD(S) and Congress. The floods affected over 100 out of 175 taluks and as many as 22 out of 30 districts in the state. The disaster occurred weeks after the BJP-led government came to power in Karnataka.

Anil Kumble appointed Kings XI Punjab head coach

Sport
With the signing, Kumble becomes the only Indian coach currently in the IPL.
Former Indian skipper Anil Kumble has been appointed as the head coach of Kings XI Punjab for the upcoming season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). According to a report in ESPNcricinfo, Kumble will also be put in charge of "all cricket-related affairs" of the team for the foreseeable future. With the signing, Kumble becomes the only Indian coach in the IPL. The report further stated that Kumble would make a presentation to the team management on his plans for the road ahead on October 19. Kumble, who is India's highest wicket-taker in Test cricket, will be replacing Mike Hesson who in August parted ways with the Punjab-based franchise after one season at helm with them. Even though Hesson had signed a two-year contract, the 44-year-old left the role midway with the Punjab-based franchise, who finished sixth in this year's edition. He has been appointed as Royal Challengers of Bangalore'S (RCB) director of cricket. Kings XI will be the third IPL team Kumble will be involved with. He started out as a player - and later captain - with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in 2008. He was then appointed as a mentor by the same team, before joining Mumbai Indians in a similar role in 2013. In June 2016, he was appointed as the head coach of the Indian men's team by BCCI for a period of one year but resigned due to "untenable" differences with captain Virat Kohli. A number of players from Karnataka including KL Rahul, Mayank Agarwal and Karun Nair play for the Karnataka Ranji cricket team. Kings XI Punjab is led by Tamil Nadu spinner R Ashwin however reports stated that there are talks involving the franchise and Delhi Capitals to trade the off-spinner ahead of the upcoming IPL season. The final decision on the matter will be taken by Anil Kumble.

Karnataka activist calls off hunger strike after Union Min Sadananda Gowda intervenes

Strike
Noted theatre person and activist Prasanna had been on hunger strike from October 6 calling for the government to support artisans and create jobs for them.
Noted theatre personality Prasanna, who had been on a hunger strike for five days for creating jobs for artisans, ended his protest on Friday evening after Union Minister DVS Sadananda Gowda assured him of a meeting with Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises. The minister also assured Prasanna an expert committee formed by members of Grama Seva Sangha, a group which has been involved in efforts to promote handmade goods and its makers, will be given a platform. Prasanna had started the strike with the theme 'Create Jobs, Protect Nature', and had been calling for creation of jobs to support artisans who make handmade goods with minimum loss to environment.   "We received assurances that this meeting will be facilitated shortly to place our demands before the Union government. We were looking for an official to take the next step to make our voices heard by the government to make handmade goods GST-free and demand a better prices," said a member of the Grama Seva Sangha.  The latest hunger strike is yet another agitation started by Prasanna and the Grama Seva Sangha - they had earlier protested in October 2017 demanding 0% GST on all handmade products and a better price for the products.  In February 2018, Prasanna had led a protest march walking 246 kilometres from Yadgir to Ballari district in the northern part of Karnataka. According to Prasanna, it was for weavers in the state, most of whom are based in the northern districts of Dharwad, Koppal, Yadgir and Gadag. Read: K’taka activists are on 250-km padayatra demanding better prices for handmade goods The expert panel formed by Grama Seva Sangha had come up with a way to classify 'handmade products' and made a list of 200 such products. The GST Council in 2018 brought 29 of these products under 0% GST category. The panel has also defined terms – ‘sacred economy’ and ‘monster economy’ – and want the government’s focus to shift from the latter to the former. Sacred economy, according to the Grama Seva Sangha, is a system of production that utilizes a minimum of 60% human labor and 60% local raw material, and not more than 40% automation; and not more than 40% imported raw material. Local raw material is any raw material produced within a 100-km radius of the site of production and imported raw material is that material brought in from outside. They also say that a 'monster economy' is one that which contravenes all these stipulations. According to Prasanna, the government in India is reviving the monster economy, and he instead wants the focus to be on reviving nature and the rural economy. "If we have to really destroy the monster, we will have to destroy the monster economy first and bring to the fore, the sacred economy. Only the sacred economy can save jobs and save nature. You are the Prime Minister of our country and you are an able leader. We want you to take the initiative in this matter," reads a letter written by Prasanna to the Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, earlier this week.

Kadri Gopalnath: The man who brought the saxophone into Indian homes

Obituary
'Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali’ from 'Duet' still remains evergreen largely due to the brilliant accompaniment on the saxophone by Kadri Gopalnath.
It was a chance visit to the Mysuru Palace at the age of eight that kindled in Kadri Gopalnath an interest in classical music. The palace orchestra was belting out popular numbers and the amazed boy's attention remained focused on the saxophone, an instrument that he was setting eyes on for the first time. He decided then and there that he would turn into an instrumentalist and the saxophone would be his chosen instrument.  There was a slight hitch however. The young Kadri was keen on a career in classical music but the saxophone was a western instrument used largely in jazz music. A carnatic musician giving saxophone concerts was unheard of in those days and it had not found favour even as an accompaniment by vocalists of the time. It took more than two decades for Kadri Gopalnath to master the intricacies of the alien instrument, but all the hard work paid ample dividends and even the toughest ragas became child’s play for the maestro.  Kadri Gopalnath was born in a village named Sajeepa Mandi in the Bantwal Taluk of Dakshin Karnataka. He was drawn to music at a very young age as his father Thaniyappa was a nadaswaram vidwan. His father was his first tutor and he later came under the tutelage of renowned carnatic musician Gopalakrishna Iyer who put him through his paces. But as Kadri had acknowledged in his interviews, it was the shift to Madras (now Chennai) that really provided a fillip to his career as a budding musician.  Renowned mridangist (who later turned vocalist) TV Gopalakrishnan (who was also guru to Ilaiyaraaja) took the young Kadri under his wing, spotting his talent and diligence and it was from TVG that Kadri received a good grounding in classical music. This helped him considerably in widening his repertoire when he began to give his saxophone recitals.  His first concert was at the Chembai Festival in 1980 and since then, Kadri never had to look back. Aficionados of carnatic music cottoned on to him in a big way as he was a pioneer of sorts and a classical saxophone concert was something that was a novelty in those days. Much later, a child prodigy U Srinivas would take a leaf out of Kadri’s book and introduce the mandolin, another western instrument to the world of classical music. Srinivas however passed away prematurely at the age of 45.  Most of his contemporaries admired Kadri’s prowess in classical music and foremost among them was the doyen of classical music, the late vocalist Semmangudi Srinivasa Iyer who lauded Kadri’s contribution and hailed him as a true genius.  The credit for introducing Kadri Gopalnath to the world of celluloid goes to ace director K Balachander. KB’s film Duet had two protagonists, both musicians and one of them was a saxophone player. Both KB and the film’s music director AR Rahman opted for Kadri and the maestro composed over thirty ragas for Rahman who finally settled for the raag Kalyanavasantham. Almost all the numbers in the film had a saxophone instrumentation and all of them were composed and performed by Kadri. One particular song ‘ Anjali Anjali Pushpanjali’ which still remains evergreen gained popularity largely due to the brilliant accompaniment on the saxophone by Kadri Gopalnath.  The saxophone wizard travelled extensively abroad and had performed in almost all parts of the world. He holds the distinction of being the first Indian musician to be invited to perform at the BBC Promenade Concert in 1994 and had the privilege of enthralling audiences at the prestigious Royal Albert Hall in London. Kadri was a regular at most music festivals abroad and had performed in Jazz festivals held at Prague, Berlin, Mexico and Paris. Another sphere of music in which Kadri excelled was in collaborating with western artistes to create albums, cassettes and CDs. His collaboration with the jazz flautist James Newton resulted in the album Southern Brothers. US based saxophonist and composer Rudresh Mahanthappa and Kadri brought out an album Kinsmen which was well-received.  Kadri also played an integral part in putting together an audio - visual presentation East West which was a fusion track with the krithis of Saint Thyagaraja blending mellifluously with the compositions of Beethoven. Back home, the jugalbandhis with flautist Pravin Godkhindi who considered Kadri his guru always drew capacity crowds.  Kadri Gopalnath was at different points of time the Asthana Vidwan of the Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam, the Sri Sringeri Sarada Peetam and the Ahobila Mutt. A recipient of the Padma Shri, Kadri, during his long tenure as a classical musician received several honours and titles including ‘Saxophone Chakravarthy’ ‘Saxophone Samrat’ and‘Nada Kalaratna’. The Karnataka Government recognised his contribution to classical music by awarding him the Karnataka Rajyotsava and the Tamil Nadu government honoured him with the prestigious Kalaimamani. Other distinctions that came in the way of Kadri were the Kendriya Sangeeta Nataka Academy award, the Karnataka Kalashree and Doctorates from Universities in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.  Unlike most carnatic personalities who are always spotted in spotless white at their recitals, Kadri Gopalnath’s sartorial elegance was a sight for sore eyes. Kadri was always clad in colourful and eye catching kurtas with several strings of attractive beads round his neck adding a touch of glamour to his overall persona. The saxophone exponent who held audiences both in India and abroad in a thrall for several decades passed away in Mangaluru on the 11th of October at the age of 69 after suffering a cardiac arrest. One of his two sons. Manikanth Kadri has carved a niche for himself as a music director. In Kadri’s passing, the world of classical music has lost one of its most outstanding talents, an innovator and a pioneer who took Indian music to the far corners of the world.

Bengaluru police fined Rs 1 lakh by HC for filing FIR on Facebook page admin

Law
The administrator of the page had been arrested for comments he had made on the page about JD(S) leader Deve Gowda, former CM HD Kumaraswamy and his son Nikhil Kumaraswamy.
In an interesting turn of events, a judge of the Karnataka High Court has directed Bengaluru city police to pay a fine of Rs 1 lakh for filing an FIR against the administrator of a Facebook page.  S Jaikant runs the Facebook page ‘Troll Maga’ on which he had allegedly posted derogatory statements against JD(S) supremo HD Deve Gowda, his son, the former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, and the Deve Gowda’s grandson Nikhil Kumaraswamy. Following this, two FIRs had reportedly been registered in May and June of this year, citing that the administrator had posted “abusive and insulting statements” against the three.  “Allegations in both complaints/FIRs are more or less identical. Actions of the police lead to an irresistible inference that a deliberate attempt was made by the police to ensure that the petitioner was ‘somehow’ detained. The second FIR was registered only to ensure the petitioner was somehow arrested and detained in custody,” stated Justice PS Dinesh Kumar, according to TOI.  After the FIR had been filed at Sriramapura police station, Jaikant had sought bail from a lower court. He went to the police station to submit his bail, when he was arrested based on the second FIR which had been filed subsequently. He was released and proceedings were stayed by the court. On Friday, the High Court not only quashed the two FIRs, but also ordered for an investigation and has sought for an enquiry against the Magistrate who had allowed the filing of FIRs. "This is a classic case of blatant violation of fundamental rights by the police," the High Court said.  The judge has also stated that the DG and IGP must investigate the matter, and has asked for a report to be submitted within three months. He further noted that it was a “serious matter and required correction,” as Jaikant should not have been sent to police custody as per apex court protocols.
