Amrita Engineering college student in Bengaluru kills self, students protest alleging harassment
The protesting students alleged that college authorities rusticated Harsha for no fault of his, after days of harassment.
The atmosphere at the Amrita School of Engineering in Bengaluru’s Kasavanahalli near Bellandur was grim on Monday afternoon following the death of Harsha, a 4th year engineering student. Angry students had assembled in protest, alleging that Harsha had killed himself on campus due to harassment by college authorities and they demanded justice for their friend. Some were seated on the cemented path leading to two buildings and some were standing surrounding the same area. There was a large number of police personnel inside the campus as well, even though the situation remained largely peaceful. The college is one of the many institutions run by Amrita Vishwa Vidyapeetham under Kerala-based spiritual leader Mata Amritanandamayi Devi. The college in Bengaluru has 2,000-plus students primarily in BTech and around 200 from MTech and MBA courses. The protesting students alleged that college authorities rusticated Harsha for no fault of his, after days of harassment. They alleged that the college’s disciplinary action committee wanted Harsha to 'confess' over his involvement in an incident of vandalism that took place in the college around the end of last month. This despite another student who had come forward to confess, apparently telling the committee that Harsha was in no way involved in the incident. The students said that so far the college authorities had already rusticated 15 students across batches and another 45 were suspended for the same act. The incident of vandalism included breaking of windscreens and windows of six college-owned buses. A group of students had allegedly carried out the act after repeated complaints on the lack of decent food and sufficient water at the hostel were not acknowledged. According to multiple students TNM spoke to, Harsha had a reputation of being a harmless, shy person and was a good student. One of Harsha’s batchmate and a student of the Electronics and Communication Engineering stream said, “We knew him to be a shy guy who would not even talk to people that much. There was no way that he was involved in that incident. Even one of the students who confessed his involvement clearly said that Harsha was not part of it. But still the college administration continued to harass him.” Another student said, “He was a good student and had already got his placement. What we hear is that the college authorities had said that he would also lose his job offer due to this incident.” Some students alleged that the college authorities had initially tried to pass off the death as an accident and had even tried to remove the CCTV footage. DCP Isha Pant confirmed that Parappana Agrahara police had registered a case of abetment of Section 306 (abetment of suicide) and Section 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence of offence, or giving false information) against the college. Bengaluru man sets himself and family on fire, wife who is lone survivor critical

A 21-year-old woman, her 13-year-old brother and their mother were allegedly set on fire by their father on Monday morning. At around 9.45 am on Monday, residents of Bakshi Garden noticed flames engulfing their neighbour’s home. Scared that the fire would spread to their homes, the residents alerted the Fire and Emergency Services personnel, who arrived at the spot to combat the flames. The firefighters, who doused the flames in minutes, retrieved the bodies of 21-year-old Kaveri and her 13-year-old brother Srikanth. Their father, Murali (45) and mother Geeta (38) had sustained severe burn injuries and shifted to Victoria Hospital. Murali, who had sustained 70% burns, succumbed to his injuries at Victoria Hospital. Geeta, meanwhile, has sustained 60% burns and is currently undergoing treatment at the same hospital. Cottonpet Police, who are investigating the case, say that Murali, allegedly set his family members on fire and then also tried to kill himself, as per Geeta’s brief statement to the cops as she was being brought out of the house. “The house the family lived in is very small. Murali was unemployed for over two years and this had become the cause for several fights between him and his wife Geeta,” Cottonpet police said. Neighbours, who claimed to have witnessed these fights on multiple occasions, allegedly told investigators that the couple would fight about Murali’s drinking habits and his inability to get a job. “The mother was the one who was earning. The boy was in school and their daughter had just graduated from college. Murali would get drunk and violent. Sometimes, the fights he picked with his wife went public. On Monday morning, too, the couple had a fight and Murali went out of the house, claiming to want some tea,” the police said. Murali allegedly came back with a can of petrol and allegedly set his children and wife on fire before trying to kill himself. “The Fire and Emergency Services concluded that it was a case of arson. The burn pattern shows that a combustible solution was poured on the deceased persons, which led to the fire in the house. The man killed his children and tried to kill his wife,” DCP West B Ramesh said. The Cottonpet Police have registered a case of murder. “We are waiting to see if Geeta recovers. Then we will take her statement,” the police added

Abandoned box explodes at Karnataka's Hubballi Railway Station, 3 injured
Police suspect that a suspicious box may have been left by a passenger who deboarded a Vijaywada-bound train.
A minor explosion was reported on Monday afternoon at the office of the station master at Hubballi Railway Station in Karnataka. According to reports, one person was injured as a result of the explosion. Hubbali is the headquarters of the South Western Railway division of the Indian Railways. According to state Disaster Management Authority sources, the blast likely occurred from a cardboard box left by an unidentified person. South Western Railway officials refused to comment on the incident. Incidentally, the blast took place at a time when divisional railway officials were holding a meeting with the MPs of the Hubbali division as part of the annual zonal meeting. Police officials along with a bomb squad were rushed to the spot. Hubballi-Dharwad City Police suspect that the box may have been left by a passenger who deboarded a Vijaywada-bound train. Police say that the owner of a food stall at the Hubballi Railway Station, Hussein Saab, noticed a brown carton with black prints at the station. The box was addressed to Khanapur MLA Anjali Nimbalkar. Hussein Saab took the suspicious-looking box and arrived at platform number 1 to hand over the box to the authorities, when the blast occurred. Police say that Hussein and two others were injured and were rushed to the Karnataka Institute of Medical Sciences in Hubballi. Police say that Hussein's hand was badly maimed during the blast and is currently being treated at the burns' unit. “There was a steel box inside the carton, which contained the explosives. We have sent the box to the Forensic Science Lab to determine what the contents of the box are. As of now, security has been tightened and CCTV footage is being combed through to figure out who left the box at the railway station. We are also trying to find out why MLA Anjali Nimbalkar’s name was on the box,” the Hubballi police added. This is a developing story

Two months after reeling from intense flooding, several districts in north Karnataka witnessed floods on Monday. Heavy rains have lashed Dharwad, Hubballi, Belagavi, Haveri and Davangere since Sunday night. A 13-year-old boy was washed away in a canal in Haveri district’s Hirekerur Town. Soheb Ranebennur, the class 7 student from Hirekerur’s Azadnagar, had gone to the canal located near the district’s Durgamba Lake to watch the water flow. Officials suspect Soheb slipped into the canal due to the force of the water and is believed to have been washed away. Hirekerur Town Police told TNM that one fire engine and a team of 10 fire fighters are currently looking for Soheb’s body. Rescue operation on for Soheb in Haveri district “Soheb told his father Ismail Ranebennur that he was leaving home. His parents assumed that he was going to school. The boy was studying at the local Urdu school and his parents assumed he was going to school. He heard about the overflowing canal from his friends and went to see it. We don’t know if he tried to swim in the canal but we are assuming he must have slipped and fallen into it,” Hirekerur Town Police said. Police say that the Fire and Emergency Services personnel along with a few locals are currently carrying out a search operation to look for Soheb. “The force of the water is too high. It will be difficult to look for the boy until the rain stops and the force of the water in the canal reduces,” the police added. Haveri district police said that three men, who were washed away in a storm water drain along the Haveri-Guttala Road, were rescued by locals. The storm drain had overflowed due to heavy rains and the three men were trying to navigate their motorbikes along the flooded road when they lost control and fell into the storm water drain. “They were rescued by locals immediately,” the police added. In Belagavi district, the incessant rainfall since Sunday night that continued till Monday morning, inundated several homes in Belagavi City, Sankeshwar and Chikkodi. In Aadi village in Chikkodi, the rainwater inundated homes and people were waiting for rescue personnel on their rooftops. In Sankeshwar, several houses were flooded with rainwater and vehicles were washed away due to the force of the water flooding the roads. Speaking to TNM, Belagavi Deputy Commissioner Bommanahalli said, "So far the rain has continued in Belagavi. We have stationed one SRDF (State Disaster Relief Force) team in low-lying areas prone to flooding. Totally 24 roads have been barricaded and precautions are being taken to ensure that there is no loss of life. We are prepared to handle it." In Dharwad, the toll naka road was flooded due to the heavy rainfall, causing inconvenience for commuters. A storm water drain in Navalgund taluk overflowed and flooded the entire village, Dharwad DC Deepa Cholan said. Several areas in Dharwad, including Lakshmisingan Keri, Jannat Nagar, Narayanpur, Sadhankeri and Bavikatti Plot, were flooded on Sunday night and the rain has continued flooding these areas. The Hoolikeri Lake located close to Alnavar town overflowed late on Sunday night and entered the homes of residents. Road connectivity from Dharwad to Belagavi was lost on Sunday as rainwater flooded the state highway near Harobelavadi village, the Deputy Commissioner said. North Karnataka was hit by heavy rains and floods in August this year, with 91 persons killed. The incessant rains had submerged entire villages and had displaced nearly four lakh people. The fresh bout of rain comes just as the Karnataka government began relief and rehabilitation works.

Yediyurappa, Siddaramaiah in tussle over staying in Cauvery bungalow
Siddaramaiah is unwilling to leave the residence, reports say.
Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa has reportedly asked former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah to vacate Cauvery, the government bungalow in Bengaluru's Kumara Park area, where he has been based for the last six years, after he served as the Chief Minister from 2013 to 2018. The Department of Personnel and Administrative Services (DPAR) reportedly offered Siddaramaiah the option to move into Yediyurappa’s previously allotted bungalow at No 2, Race Course Road, in what will be a straight swap of accommodation. Officials said Yediyurappa's intention to occupy Cauvery bungalow is due to his struggles in managing meetings at both Krishna (official office/residence of the CM) and his private residence in Dollars Colony. “By officially moving into Cauvery, the chief minister is trying to stem the flow of people to his permanent residence and also to ease travel woes from Krishna to his permanent residence after official meetings,” said a senior DPAR official speaking to the Times of India. Cauvery bungalow is located next to Krishna bungalow and the two properties are divided by a small gate. Siddaramaiah, however, is unwilling to leave the residence. Reacting to the news that his name board has been taken down at the bungalow, “It is a government bungalow and I have to vacate it if I am asked to do so. What was the need to remove the name board?” Siddaramaiah said as per The Hindu. Siddaramaiah has also written to DAPR to allow him to continue to live in Cauvery bungalow since he was appointed Leader of Opposition. Yediyurappa initially moved into the bungalow at No 2, Race Course Road, after taking charge as Chief Minister of the state since he considered it to be lucky for him. He has been using it for the past three months.
