Owing to curfew announced in parts of Mangaluru following law and order issues during Thursday’s anti-CAA protests, the Visvesvaraya Technological University (VTU) has postponed its exam set to be held on Friday.  In a press release, the Registrar of Evaluation said, “In view of the announcement of curfew and declaration of holiday for schools and colleges in Mangaluru, VTU examinations scheduled on 20-12-2019 are postponed. The revised time table will be announced shortly. The detailed notification in respect of rescheduled dates will be available at www.vtu.ac.in.” He further warned students not to fall prey for social media hoaxes and only trust the official website. “Students are informed to visit the official website of the University ie. www.vtu.ac.in and not to refer to any other source or social media,” he added. According to reports, Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS) has also cancelled examinations to be held on Friday over the violence during the protests. The police had late on Thursday evening confirmed that two protesters had succumbed to their injuries following incidents of violence in Mangaluru during the anti-CAA protests. While police remain tight-lipped about the cause of the death, hospital sources have said that they died as a result of bullet injuries. After stone pelting was reported, police fired in the air, as per sources. However, a video shows a policeman firing at protesters. TNM has earlier reported that police at Urwa, Bunder, Barke, Kadri, which falls under Mangalore Central Subdivision made the announcement about curfew using loudspeakers.   Moreover,  the Home Department of Karnataka has imposed a suspension on mobile internet services by all mobile providers in Mangaluru City Commissionerate and Dakshina Kannada district till Saturday.  In a notification, Additional Chief Secretary to the Home Department, Rajneesh Goel said that internet services were being prohibited on Friday and Saturday due to "possibility of fake news spreading" in Mangaluru and that it was a preventive measure to ensure peace.  Thursday saw multiple protests against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act and the proposed nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and other parts of the state and country, including the national capital. File image
People from neighbouring Kerala indulged in violence in Mangaluru during protests against the amended citizenship law, Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai claimed on Thursday. He also warned that strict action will be taken against those involved in violence and spreading rumours. Police have also confirmed the death of two protesters rs had succumbed to their injuries following incidents of violence. While police remain tightlipped about the cause of the death, hospital sources have said that  Jaleel Kudroli (49) and Nausheen Bengre (23), who were critically injured, succumbed to bullet injuries. Police also said   "People who had come from Kerala to participate in the protest also tried to set fire to a police station in Mangaluru and damaged public property. To control the mob, police had to use force," Bommai told reporters. The protest march was held peacefully in most parts of Karnataka but there was violence in Mangaluru. Some of the people came from Kerala and they misled students and instigated violence, he alleged. The home minister also said the state government will take action against anti-social elements. The Karnataka government suspended mobile internet services for 48 hours in Mangaluru and Dakshina Kannada district after reports of violence. Mobile Internet services have been suspended in the two places, a state Home Ministry order said. It has been done because protesters are likely to use social media platforms for spreading rumours and also for transmission of information like pictures, videos and text that "have the potential to inflame passions and thus exacerbate the law and order situation", it said. Thursday saw multiple protests against the contentious CItizenship Amendment Act and the proposed nation-wide National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengaluru, Mangaluru and other parts of the state and country, including the national capital. EVen mobile services were suspended in Delhi.

Fact check: Did Bengaluru cop threaten to punch Ramachandra Guha at CAA protest?

CAA
A video of the police detaining Guha was viral on social media but some circulated it with the claim that a cop threatened to punch him.
Screengrab
December 19 witnessed nationwide protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA). People across the country took to the streets while the police in most states denied permission for protest and imposed Section 144. Among the protesters in Bengaluru, Karnataka was historian Ramachandra Guha who, with several others, was detained by the police. A video of the police detaining Guha is widely circulating on social media. However, some circulated it with the claim that a cop threatened to punch him. Congress MP Shashi Tharoor tweeted, “Is this cop threatening to hit ⁦@Ram_Guha with his fist? “ Is this cop threatening to hit ⁦@Ram_Guha⁩ with his fist? It’s bad enough to arrest a senior historian exercising his democratic right to protest. But to do so with the threat of force is disgraceful & the cop deserves stern disciplinary action. Does the Home Minister care? pic.twitter.com/ogjD47pgsd — Shashi Tharoor (@ShashiTharoor) December 19, 2019 Journalist Faye DSouza tweeted along similar lines, “The police man made a fist….. #Bangalore.“ In fact, several other journalists claimed the same – Rituparna Chatterjee, Rupa Subramanya, Saikat Datta and Amol Rajan. DMK’s IT-wing deputy secretary Isai tweeted, “The police in the right about to fist punch @Ram_Guha.“ The police in the right about to fist punch @Ram_Guha #CAA_NRC has come to this juncture! #BJPburningIndia pic.twitter.com/Ak2fJuP6vY — இசை (@isai_) December 19, 2019 Another user Md Asif Khan and historian William Dalrymple made similar assertions.  The cops not only arrest but come close to punching @Ram_Guha . Outrageous https://t.co/ALptFqfjOS — William Dalrymple (@DalrympleWill) December 19, 2019 Visual analysis Alt News analysed the viral video and found that the claim that a policeman threatened to punch historian Ramachandra Guha during anti-CAA protests is false. While it appears that the cop was making a fist when the video is watched at normal speed, a slowed-down version of the video reveals that he was reaching for the breast pocket on his uniform. The clip below is 16x times slower than the original. Furthermore, a screengrab of the exact moment when the cop raises his arm clearly shows that he was touching his breast pocket. Here, we can also see that his fingers are not forming a fist. Therefore, while the video of policemen detaining Ramachandra Guha gives the visual perception that a cop made a fist at the moment of detaining him, in reality the policeman was reaching for the breast pocket on his uniform. Police lathi charge anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru @thenewsminute #CAAProtest pic.twitter.com/pc7oYX2lm5 — Theja Ram (@thejaram92) December 19, 2019 The police had fired in the air as per police sources, however some visuals also show police firing at the crowd. "Despite their own community leaders requesting them to stop, without any care for public order, they (protesters) began burning things and attacking police. When things got out of control, two shots were fired in the air. Around 8 to 10 people attacked the police then and beat them up with stones," Harsha added.  Tear gas was used to disperse crowds gathered to protest against the CAA outside the DC office in Mangaluru. "At 2 pm, people gathered in spite of section 144 in place. They started pelting stones, sticks and bottles. Several police officials began lathi charge and several people have been injured. The situation went out of control and tear gas was used to disperse the crowd", Harsha added.  Following this, a series of stone-pelting and arson incidents were reported  Police justified the action saying that thousands of people gathered at Kudroli leading to violent clashes between police and protesters. Protesters had defied prohibitory orders under section 144 of the CrPC which was imposed late on Wednesday night. The police also resorted to firing shots in the air after the protesters began pelting stones.  Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa addressed the incident in Mangaluru and appealed to residents against inciting violence. "An unfortunate incident has occurred in Mangaluru. We have to maintain peace and harmony. I request all the people to not cause harm to public property and to refrain from resorting to violence. I have held talks with leaders and representatives of the Muslim community and also from other communities. They have appealed to people and instructed them to refrain from resorting to violence," he said in a statement.  Read: Curfew imposed in parts of Mangaluru after violence in anti-CAA protests
