The Bengaluru police on Saturday arrested two men for allegedly attacking a woman BMTC conductor, Indira, with acid. Indira works as a BMTC conductor attached to the Peenya bus depot.  The accused have been identified as Arun Nayak, the woman’s brother-in-law, who is also BMTC employee, and his friend Kumara Naik. Indira was attacked just 100m away from her residence, as she was making her way to the bus depot. The police had suspected that the attackers were waiting for Indira as this is her usual route to work. According to reports, Arun was the mastermind of the plan. The police said that Arun and Indira worked in the same depot but Arun was upset that Indira used to ignore him. Arun had also attempted to take her life in a hit and run incident but at that time, there was no police complaint, reports say. Due to this previous incident, the police had named Arun as a suspect right after the acid attack. Meanwhile, the second accused, Kumara, who was allegedly driving the motorcycle on which they apprehended Indira, was unaware that Arun will attack her with acid until she was attacked. He has now been booked for abetment. Following the attack on Thursday, Indira was rushed to a hospital in Hessarghatta and is now admitted to the ICU. She is currently undergoing treatment for burns in her neck, face and back. After the attack, DCO North Shashikumar visited her in the hospital. However, Indira was unable to speak because of her injuries and the police got inputs from her family members. According to The Hindu, the police nabbed the duo after the victim’s neighbour gave a vital clue about the suspects. After studying the phone record details and analysing the CCTV footage of the area, police zeroed in on the two men.

Police book student leaders over ‘controversial’ flag at anti-CAA protest in Bengaluru

CAA
Opinions have been divided, with many strongly condemning it and others supporting it.
The Halsurugate Police Station has registered a case against the students and organisers of the December 20 anti-CAA student protest held at the Government Arts College grounds in Central Bengaluru, for a controversial flag, according to protest organiser Teresa Braggs, who was named in the FIR. The flag in question was a red banner with the words “F*** Hindutva”, and the ‘Om’ symbol being depicted to look like the Nazi symbol. The flag, when unveiled, attracted a lot of attention. Several persons also stopped to take photos of the flag. Students of various colleges in Bengaluru organised the peaceful protest on December 20, even as Section 144 was in effect. However, the Government Arts College Principal gave permission to hold the protest there. However, the flag did not sit well with the principal of the college, who then decided to take action and filed a police complaint.  According to the Bengaluru West DCP, two cases have been registered with the police under Sections 188 (disobedience of an order duly promulgated by a public servant) and section 153A (Promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion, race, place of birth, residence, language, etc., and doing acts prejudicial to maintenance of harmony.) The police are investigating, and will take further action soon. Teresa put out a statement on social media to the effect that she was in consultation with lawyers regarding the issue. She said that after looking at the photos, she found that the person holding the flag was a student who came to attend the protest, and not any other mischief-maker. It is unclear whether that person has been named in the FIR. Meanwhile, pictures of the flag have been circulating on social media. Opinions have been divided, with many strongly condemning it and others supporting it.

He also stated that he had seen the videos of tear gas shells being used in Highland Hospital and that an inquiry would also be launched into the matter. Shobha Karandlaje, however, said that the protesters were attempting to take weapons from the Bunder Police Station and use it, which is why the police resorted to shooting. “Bunder Police Station was surrounded on all four sides near it. The mob wanted to get guns from the station and use it. That's why police have resorted to this,” she said. This however is not true as all the journalists had ID cards and some of them had accreditation too. When asked why BJP leaders tweeted that journalists were carrying weapons, Yediyurappa said he does not know details and the inquiry would reveal details  Udupi-Chikkamagaluru MP Shobha Karandlaje, who had tweeted that people from Kerala carrying weapons had been arrested, was also not willing to confirm this.  “Bunder Police Station was surrounded by the crowd on all four roads leading to it. Siddaramaiah lashes out against video of Mangaluru cop saying 'not even one died'

Politics
In a series of 15-tweets former CM takes on Karnataka government, questions ‘state sponsored’ protest or ‘premeditated’ killing.
In a series of 15 tweets on Friday, former Karnataka Chief Minister and leader of opposition in Karnataka Legislative Assembly Siddaramaiah, has berated the BJP-led state government and the Center for its high-handedness in quelling the protesters against Citizens Amendment Act (CAA) 2019. “No matter the amount of majority the government enjoys, it does not have any right to curb people’s rights and freedom, in a democracy like ours. In case the people feel the laws passed by the government are against their interest, then people have the right to question it and dissent against it. Government does not have any right to curb this freedom,” Siddaramiah tweeted. 15/1 #IndiaAgainstCAA — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) December 20, 2019 According to the 71-year old Congress leader, the demonstration against CAA was absolutely peaceful and imposition of section 144 was unnecessary. “During a peaceful environment and demonstration, what was the necessity to implement Section 144 across the state? How is police allowed to fire at people so arbitrarily? Were the protesters armed?” he asked. ಮಂಗಳೂರಿನ ರಸ್ತೆಗಳಲ್ಲಿ ಘೋಷಣೆ ಕೂಗುತ್ತಿದ್ದವರ ಬಳಿ ಮಾರಕಾಸ್ತ್ರಗಳಿತ್ತೇ? 2/15 — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) December 20, 2019 Siddharamiah listed several measures that the police could have taken to disperse the crowd “Police could have requested them to withdraw, easily dispersed them with lathi-charge, water cannons or rubber bullets, and several measures to disperse the crowd, but the shows that they had different intention,” he demanded. 3/15#IndiaAgainstCAA — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) December 20, 2019 He continued that during his former stint in the government, they did not even think of guns. “For five years our objective was to provide rice (for poor), milk (children), shelters (homeless) and loan wavier to farmer,” Siddaramaiah said. In reference to a video that has gone viral in the social media showing a police officer asking another cop, ‘why did no one die in spite of shooting at them many times?’ What does this mean? Doesn’t it indicate that protest was state sponsored? Doesn’t it indicate that it was premeditated killing of the protesters,” he lashed out. 4/15#IndiaAgainstCAA pic.twitter.com/p5oH2BbvVl — Siddaramaiah (@siddaramaiah) December 20, 2019 The leader of the opposition declared that Congress did not give a call for the protest.
