K'taka man arrested in Saudi for posting blasphemous messages? MEA seeks clarity

Controversy
In a video allegedly posted by Harish which has been shared across social media channels, he can be seen asking for forgiveness.
The Indian Embassy in Saudi Arabia is trying to help one Karnataka man who is believed to have been arrested by Saudi authorities on Sunday for allegedly posting provocative messages on Facebook.  The man has been identified as one Harish Bangera from Kundapur in coastal Karnataka. He was working for a Dammam based Saudi company and was employed as an airconditioner mechanic.  A Facebook profile in his name has posted suggesting that another Ram Mandir be built at Mecca which is the revered holy site by a majority of Muslims across the world. The Facebook account has been deleted since Monday morning. In anotherther message, the profile had also abused members of the Saudi royal family. However, many have pointed out on Facebook that this particular Facebook account that posted the allegedly blasphemous messages was functional only from December 20. Meanwhile, Harish had another Facebook profile which he seems to have been using for years and has regularly posted about his family, friends and football. Some have suggested that the second account could have been created to put him in trouble. However, there is a video doing the rounds where Harish can be heard apologising to his Muslim brothers. According to the Karnataka government, the Ministry of External Affairs have been alerted. Sources have further told TNM that Asim Anwar, the Second Secretary (Political & Information) at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh have been apprised of the situation. He is taking up the matter with Desh Bandhu Bhati, Counsellor (Community Welfare) who in turn will inform Ausaf Sayeed, the Ambassador leading the Indian Embassy in the Arab nation. “Embassy is cognizant of the matter and would do all possible to help Mr. Harish. Rest assured,” Bhatti told in a statement. Our Indian Embassy is seized of the matter and doing their best. Good work @KarnatakaVarthe. "Embassy is cognizant of the matter and would do all possible to help Mr. Harish. Rest assured. Thanks." D.B. Bhati Counsellor Embassy of India Riyadh https://t.co/LC0kKFkzTx — Captain Manivannan (@mani1972ias) December 23, 2019 Meanwhile, it is not yet fully clear if Harish has been arrested. "We have asked the Foreign Office here in Riyadh to confirm whether Harish Bangera has been arrested. We have not received any communication from them yet. We are trying to get in touch with his family or relatives in India. We will inform the family of the situation when we know more," an Indian Embassy official in Saudi Arabia said. In a video posted by Harish which has been shared across social media channels, he can be seen folding in hands and seeking forgiveness from “Muslim” friends. He is heard saying, “I have done a mistake. Please forgive me. I will never upload such post again. I ask my Muslim brothers to please forgive me on this occasion. I am facing problem from my company.” But this could not help him prevent an arrest. Sanghi now apologizes for posting against muslims in social media in abroad pic.twitter.com/PjVPLTXCZ0 — Retweet Sarkar™️ (@GoSlowplz) December 22, 2019 In another post that has gone viral on Facebook since then, reportedly Harish has been fired by his employers for this alleged post. The message reads. “We Gulf Carton Factory Co. want to have your attention for what happened, in relation to unethical posts, posted by Mr. Harish Bangera from his personal Facebook account. It was unacceptable and we have immediately terminated Mr. Harish Bagera form his duties and company contract. We condemn such activities extremely and have reported this case to Police, Ministry of Labour & Saudi authorities for their further action. We assure everyone that we have zero tolerance for such acts." (With inputs from Theja Ram)

A call for civil disobedience: Massive protest in Bengaluru demanding rollback of CAA, NRC

CAA
Tens of thousands of people took part in the protest, where several activists called for a civil disobedience movement to counter the government’s NRC programme.
Tens of thousands of people gathered at Bengaluru’s Quddus Saheb Edigah grounds on Monday morning to protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act and the National Register of Citizens. At the massive gathering, protesters called for a civil disobedience movement against the CAA and NRC. A large number of people from various groups belonging to the Muslim community showed up for the protest. Residents of RT Nagar and surrounding areas of Benson Town and Cantonment shut their shops to attend the protest. The crowd started trickling into the maidan around 10.30 am, and within an hour the grounds were packed with a crowd so big that security personnel had to lock the gates and install barricades. Around 1 lakh people showed up for a massive protest against CAA and NRC. Protesters pledge to start a civil disobedience movement of centre does not roll back this law. @thenewsminute #CAA_NRCProtests pic.twitter.com/3io8pz62i7 — Theja Ram (@thejaram92) December 23, 2019 Thousands of people who were coming in for the protest then began waving the national flag and shouting slogans along Miller’s Road. From the underpass near Jayamahal Palace Hotel along Miller’s Road and all the way till the Bangalore Mizo Presbyterian Church, the entire stretch was filled with protesters. The protest was peaceful, with people shouting slogans and waving flags when prompted. Loudspeakers were installed at various points on Miller’s Road, with announcements to maintain peace being made at regular intervals. Speaking to the protesters, former IAS officer and activist Harsh Mander said that the BJP must change its name to Bharatiya Jinnah Party. “The Hindu Mahasabha and the RSS just like Jinnah wanted two countries. One Islamic and a separate one for Hindus. Hence, they should change their name to Bharatiya Jinnah Party,” he said. He also called for a civil disobedience movement to counter the government’s NRC programme. “Gandhiji taught us civil disobedience, when he along with 70,000 people went to jail for making salt and defying the British. He taught us to resist discriminatory policies of the government by rejecting such laws made by the government. I’m pledging that I will not submit my papers to the government. Let them put me in a detention centre. We will fill them up by not submitting our documents,” Harsh said. An elated crowd began shouting “Hum kaagaz nahi denge, hum kaagaz nahi denge,” (We will not give our documents) and pledged to part take in a civil disobedience movement, if need be. Former IAS officer Shashikant Senthil, who resigned from his post as Deputy Commissioner of Dakshina Kannada district earlier this year citing intolerance on behalf of the government, was also present. Senthil too called for a civil disobedience movement and said that the government’s plan to “divide and rule” has backfired. “Look at the crowd today. Around 1 lakh people are here. The government brought in CAA and NRC to divide the people of India on religious lines. But today, we have all united. We must thank the students and the youth who united us. I appeal to the government to roll back CAA and NRC as soon as possible or protests will continue. We will fill up your detention centres until there is no more space. We will start the civil disobedience movement,” he said. Retired Supreme Court Judge Gopal Gowda, who was also present at the protest, read out the Preamble of the Constitution along with several lawyers. Justice Gowda said that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah must clarify people’s doubts and state conclusively whether the CAA and NRC would be implemented. Retired SC Judge Gopal Gowda and several lawyers read out the preamble, while calling for a civil disobedience movement. #CAAProtest pic.twitter.com/wVAjgjfcq3 — Theja Ram (@thejaram92) December 23, 2019 Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while addressing a gathering at New Delhi’s Ram Leela Maidan on Sunday, said that the government has not made plans to execute the NRC. “Amit Shah has said inside and outside the Parliament that first the government would enact CAA and then implement NRC. Now Modi is saying that there have been no plans to execute NRC. One of them is obviously lying. The Prime Minister must clarify what the government’s stance on this issue is immediately or we will continue to protest,” Justice Gowda said.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya says opposers of CAA are 'puncturewallas', faces backlash

Politics
Many pointed out that he referred to poor Dalits and Muslims who are forced into running these shops due to lack of opportunities to pursue other means of earning their livelihood.

Bengaluru South MP Tejasvi Surya is facing criticism for remarks he made during a pro-CAA rallyon Sunday. He referred to the opposers of the recently passed Citizenship Amendment Act as ‘puncture wallas’ in a demeaning way. He said, “People of Bengaluru’s IT sector, BT sector, those contributing to the nation’s economy like lawyers, bank employees, ordinary citizens including auto-rickshaw drivers have gathered here today. Only the uneducated, illiterate puncture shop wallahs are against it.” Many pointed out that he referred to poor Dalits and Muslims who are forced into running these shops due to lack of opportunities to pursue other means of earning their livelihood. He used these deregulatory references as he was addressing a pro-CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) rally in Bengaluru’s Town Hall by calling all those who oppose the law as “illiterates”.He also said all the criticism to the law was due to “products of half-understanding” “If you split open their chests, you cannot find even four words. These are the people protesting against the CAA,” Tejasvi was quoted by the Deccan Chronicle.  Tejasvi said that “namby-pamby” secularism would not work any more in this country.  Deccan Herald also quoted him as saying, “This is a new India that we are creating. This is an India which will have a $5 trillion economy. The namby-pamby secularism that you people have built so far will not work anymore.” Reacting to this, Indian Youth Congress leader and Campaigner-in-charge Srivatsa called him a “crass elitist” and asked whether poor people do not have the right to protest or not. Editors Guild condemns police attacks on journalists covering protests over CAA

CAA
The Guild has asked the Home Ministry to direct police forces in different states to offer adequate protection to journalists engaged in coverage of the ongoing protests.
The Editors Guild of India on Monday issued a statement condemning the acts of violence and brutality committed by police forces, in particular, those in Karnataka and Uttar Pradesh, against media persons in different parts of the country over the past week. “The Guild reminds the police forces across the country that journalists are present at different venues, where protests are taking place, as part of their constitutionally guaranteed duties of gathering information and disseminating it among the people through their respective media platforms. Using force or physical violence against journalists on duty throttles the very voice of democracy and media freedom,” the statement reads. The Guild has also asked the Union Home Ministry to direct police forces in different states to offer adequate protection to journalists engaged in coverage of the ongoing protests.  “Instead of targeting them for physical attack, the need of the hour is to ensure proper and responsible coverage, a goal that cannot be achieved by such acts of violence and brutality against journalists on duty,” the statement adds.  The statement comes after multiple incidents emerged of journalists being detained or assaulted during their coverage of the protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act across India. In Karnataka, after the death of two men in police firing in Mangaluru, journalists from Kerala were stopped from reporting and detained outside Wenlock Hospital in Mangaluru. The bodies of the victims had been kept at Wenlock Hospital at the time.  In Mangaluru, on Thursday. a journalist named Ismail Zaorez who is working with Vartha Bharati, a regional paper based in Mangaluru, was assaulted during a lathi charge by police officials. This in spite of the journalist showing his ID card. Ismail alleged that his ID card was taken away from him by force by the police and was only returned to him after a group of journalists discussed the issue with police personnel.  In Uttar Pradesh, The Hindu reporter Omar Rashid wrote a first-person account of how he was apprehended by police while he was reporting on the protest against the CAA in Lucknow. According to the report, his phone was snatched by the police who later verbally abused him, accusing him of orchestrating the protest. He also narrated that his friend who was with him was beaten up and that an officer threatened to “tear his beard and thrash him” if he did not answer the police’s questions satisfactorily.

CID to probe deaths of two men in Mangaluru police firing

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had earlier assured that there will be a CID inquiry into the police firing that killed the two men.

The deaths of two persons in the firing by Mangaluru police during protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) will now be probed by the CID. Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa had earlier assured that there will be a CID inquiry into the police firing that killed two people in the anti-CAA stir in Mangaluru.   Karnataka CM @BSYBJP has said the CID will probe the death of two men as a result of police firing in Mangaluru #CAA_NRC_Protest . Family members of the deceased had asked for a judicial inquiry into the killings. pic.twitter.com/eyU1q0Zx0s — Soumya Chatterjee (@Csoumya21) December 23, 2019     A CMO official told TNM that a government order is yet to be issued and will be likely ready by end of the day on Monday. The announcement from the CM comes even as the opposition Congress and the family members of the two deceased men have demanded a judicial inquiry into the killings. Abdul Jaleel (49) and Nouseen Yane (23) were the two men who succumbed to bullet injuries after police opened fire to disperse protesters. At least nine others had suffered injuries. On Thursday last week, after the protests against CAA were clamped down by police through lathi charge and tear gas, a series of stone-pelting incidents erupted near Mangaluru North (Bunder) police station at 4.30 pm. Police alleged that protesters resorted to burning tyres and other scrap material on the road and converged on Mangaluru North (Bunder) Police Station from three sides.  At this point, police began firing at the protesters to deter them, they claim. Abdul and Nouseen were daily-wage labourers in Mangaluru. Abdul worked odd jobs related to fishing in Dhakke, a popular fish market in the city. Nouseen was involved in welding works. Though the police claim that they shot into the crowd for their own safety, multiple videos that have emerged question the police's version. One video shows police shooting at a crowd that is standing quite far. In another video, policemen are heard telling each other saying, 'not one person has died'. On Sunday, it was reported that the two killed were named as accused number 3 and accused number 8 in the FIR registered under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Karnataka Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act. Though a private hospital in Mangaluru confirmed that both of them were brought dead, and Jaleel according to multiple witnesses was only waiting for his children to come back from tuition, the FIR alleging rioting has been filed by the police.

Bengaluru Metro’s Green Line gets two more six-car trains

Transport
The six-car trains can carry 2,000 passengers and is expected to ease crowding during rush hour.
Two more six-car trains will be added to the Green Line of Bengaluru Metro starting from Monday. This will bring the total tally of six-car trains in the Green Line to 12. Out of the 18 trains plying the Nagasandra-Yelachenahalli route, six are three-car trains. All 18 trains on the Purple line (Baiyappanahalli to Mysuru Road) are six-car trains.     Until June 2018, all Namma Metro trains plying in the city consisted of three coaches with a total capacity of 975 passengers at a given time. This caused a space crunch during peak hours. The six-car train, in comparison, can accommodate as many as 2,000 passengers. In a press release, the Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) said, “We have converted two more three-car train sets into six-car train sets on the Green Line and will be inducted into revenue service wef December 23. There will be a total of 12 six-car trains, which will be operating on the Green Line between Nagasandra/Peenya Industry and Yelachenahalli stations. On weekdays, these trains will perform a total of 88 round trips.” “During peak hours, 66% of trains in operations will be six-car train sets and 33% of trains will be three-car trais. Otherwise, all six-car train sets will be operational.” Passengers plying the Green Line route have been complaining of crowding during peak hours as the capacity of the trains have only increased partially since the operations began, while all trains on the Purple Line have been converted to six-car trains. The six-car trains are expected to ease the rush hour journeys.  The first compartment is reserved for women in all six-car trains. This additional capacity is also expected to increase the average daily ridership of the Bengaluru metro, which is now at around 4.54 lakh across the Purple and Green Lines.  While the Green Line between Nagasandra and Yelachenahalli spans 24.22 km, the Purple Line between Baiyyappanahalli and Mysore Road runs for 18.08 km. However, ridership has been consistently higher for the Purple Line than the Green Line. Recently, the metro had reached its highest ridership on the eve of Deepavali when more than 4.83 lakh people used the metro. Out of these, the Purple Line recorded 2.63 lakh passengers, while the Green Line saw 2.19 lakh passengers on a single day.  By March 2020, the metro rail authority is expecting to ready 50 six-car trains for the two lines together. The BMRCL said with the Bharat Earth Movers Limited expected to maintain the schedule of delivery, it is likely that the metro authority will also be able to stick to its deadline.
