IndiGo pilot suspended for threatening passenger who requested wheelchair assistance

Controversy
Union Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri tweeted saying that he requested his office to contact the airline as soon as he saw the passenger’s tweet thread about the incident.
An IndiGo airlines pilot has been off-rostered a day after Supriya Unni Nair, a passenger who was travelling on a flight from Chennai to Bengaluru posted about her harrowing experience with the aircraft pilot.  Union Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri, in a tweet, said that he requested his office to contact the airline as soon as he saw the tweet about the pilot’s behaviour towards the passenger and her mother, who needed wheelchair assistance.  “The airline has informed @MoCA_GoI that the pilot has been off-rostered pending full enquiry,” he said.  I requested my office to contact @IndiGo6E as soon as I saw the tweet by Ms @SupriyaUnniNair about the pilot's behaviour with her & her 75 yr old mother in need of wheelchair assistance. The airline has informed @MoCA_GoI that the pilot has been off-rostered pending full enquiry https://t.co/NVkjr6ubti — Hardeep Singh Puri (@HardeepSPuri) January 14, 2020 “Your captain on 6E 806 from Chennai to Bangalore on January 13 Jayakrishna harassed, threatened and prevented me and my 75-year old diabetic mom from disembarking the flight and threatened to arrest us because we asked for wheelchair assistance,” Supriya had written in a tweet.  .@IndiGo6E Your captain on 6E 806 from Chennai to Bangalore on January 13 Jayakrishna harrased, threatened and prevented me and my 75-year old diabetic mom from disembarking the flight and threatened to arrest us because we asked for wheelchair assistance. — SunTweets (@SupriyaUnniNair) January 13, 2020 In a series of tweets, she narrated the threats made by the pilot on the flight and the abusive language he used, until the IndiGo staff on the ground in Bengaluru intervened.  The problem started when the passenger’s mother, who needed a wheelchair, was told by the staff she wouldn’t be given access to it despite a request at the time of booking. It was then that the pilot barged in and yelled at Supriya for “pressing the assistance button and annoying him and his crew,” she tweeted. The pilot went on to yell at Supriya for addressing the flight attendant by her name. “Taken aback, I tell him not to yell at me and then the threats start. The wheelchair guys arrive and he points at mom and says youre not going anywhere (sic),” she wrote. Supriya went on to narrate, “He prevents the wheelchair people from taking my mom out of the aircraft threatening us that he will ensure we are detained and spend a night in jail.”  “I'll get my CEO to make sure you spend a night in jail, ‘we’ will teach you some manners, he says,” Supriya quoted the pilot as saying, adding, “You have paid piddly 2000 rupees you dont own the aircraft he adds. I will make sure you are barred from the skies he yells my mom and me (sic).”  Supriya narrated that the abuses and threats continued after disembarking from the aircraft and into the bus and at the airport lounge. Speaking to TNM, Supriya said that she was thankful to the Aviation Minister for his concern as well as prompt action.  “My intent of putting this out on social media is that we went through a very bad experience. It’s very traumatic, and I don’t think any passenger should go through that. It shouldn’t happen to anyone,” she said.  “No passenger should be treated like that ever — my mother needed a wheelchair, but wheelchair or not, young or old, no one should be spoken to like that,” she added.  This action by IndiGo comes after the responded to Supriya that an inquiry was being conducted.

Terror accused were scouting for land to set up headquarters in south India: Karnataka cops

Crime
The police have so far arrested six persons in connection with the case and have booked them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act.
Police say that a joint investigation conducted by the Karnataka, New Delhi and Tamil Nadu Police into alleged terror activities by members of a banned outfit Al-Ummah has unveiled several startling details. After interrogating one of the key suspects Moinuddin Khwaja in New Delhi, the investigators allege that the group was allegedly scouting for a 50-acre plot in a secluded area to set up a headquarters for carrying out activities.  The police have so far arrested seven persons in connection with the case and have booked them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act. On January 7, the Tamil Nadu police arrested Mohammed Haneef Khan (29), Imran Khan (32), and Mohammed Zaid (24) from Soladevanahalli, Vivek Nagar and HSR Layout.  Two days later, the Delhi police arrested Moinuddin Khwaja, Syed Ali Nivas and Abdul Samad. These three persons were arrested in connection with the murder of the Hindu Munnani member Suresh Kumar in 2014. Khwaja was held under suspicion of trying to create communal disharmony by carrying out attacks in Delhi's NCR. The Tamil Nadu Police and Bengaluru Crime Branch sleuths on Monday arrested an arms dealer Azaz Pasha from Ramanagara in connection with the case.  Following this, the Bengaluru Central Crime Branch filed a complaint with Sudduguntepalya police near BTM Layout in Bengaluru on January 11 against a man identified as Mehaboob Pasha, who is allegedly the kingpin of the group. Following the input, the police filed a case against Pasha and 16 of his associates under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Interrogation has revealed that Khwaja, who was arrested in 2014 for allegedly killing Hindu Munnani leader Suresh Kumar had allegedly met two of Pasha’s relatives in jail in Tamil Nadu and they allegedly planned to shift their base to Bengaluru.  After Khwaja got bail in 2014, he absconded from Tamil Nadu. He allegedly got in touch with Mehaboob Pasha via the two relatives he met in jail in Bengaluru in 2018. Khwaja allegedly set up a trust in Bengaluru’s Bannerghatta Road, which the investigators believed was a front created for carrying out alleged terror activities.  “Khwaja and Pasha gradually recruited more people since 2018. As of now, they are a 17-member gang including Khwaja and Pasha. These 17 members would meet at Al-Hind space in Banneghatta or at Pasha’s house in Sudduguntepalya. They also had a safe house in Vivek Nagar,” the police source said.  The members of the group allegedly had code words for each of the operatives and communicated via messaging app Signal and via email. “Three people were being trained to become suicide bombers and Khwaja had plans of sending them to Syria. He had connections with the SIMI (Students Islamic Movement in India), a banned outfit in Uttar Pradesh, where Khwaja was planning to recruit more people. They were in touch with handlers in a foreign country and were arranging for funds to set up the headquarters’ campus and also buy weapons,” the source said.  The Karnataka police are currently trying to trace Mehaboob Pasha’s movements since he absconded on January 7.

BJP MP Tejasvi Surya appeals for calm after RBI caps withdrawals from a Bengaluru co-op bank

Banking
BJP MP Tejasvi Surya appealed for calm from panic-stricken depositors of the co-operative bank and urged people to not compare the bank's situation with that of Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank.
Just days after the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) limited withdrawals from accounts in Sri Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank in Bengaluru, BJP MP Tejasvi Surya on Monday appealed for calm from panic-stricken depositors of the co-operative bank.  "After a conversation with the Finance Minister, there is a meeting going on at RBI. The government will do everything in its capacity to protect the best interests of depositors. I urge all of you to not panic," Tejasvi Surya told reporters. On January 10, the RBI imposed restrictions on Sri Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank restricting withdrawals to a limit of Rs 35000 and directed the bank to not grant or renew any loans or advances. "A sum not exceeding Rs 35,000 of the total balance in every savings bank or current account or any other deposit account may be allowed to be withdrawn subject to conditions..." the RBI said in a statement uploaded on its website.  A bank official Muralidhar told The Hindu that the present situation of the bank was due to a default of Rs 350 crore on loans taken over the last three months.  The bank was started in 1999 and is headquartered in Basavangudi in Bengaluru. The bank's website has posted financial statements up till 2017-18. It showed that the bank had 8614 depositors and made a profit of over Rs 28 crore.  The bank, however, blames 62 dud loans for its current predicament. During a meeting with depositors, bank chairman K Ramakrishna struggled to address those who shouted at him demanding money. Many depositors likened the situation at the bank to the situation with the Punjab & Maharashtra Co-operative (PMC) Bank. In September, RBI had imposed restrictions on the imposed regulatory restrictions on the PMC Bank limiting withdrawals to Rs 1000.  However, Tejasvi Surya insisted that false equivalences should not be drawn by comparing the bank's present situation with that of PMC Bank. "This is nothing like PMC Bank. We will ensure that the interests of stakeholders will be protected. I urge friends in the media to not draw false equivalence with what is happening here with what happened at PMC Bank," Tejasvi Surya added.  But despite the reassurance of the MP, scores of depositors queued up at the bank's head office in Bengaluru on Tuesday in the hope of news. Many depositors, who were senior citizens, also queued up and shared pained stories of how they deposited money in the bank in the hope of encashing it after retirement.  "I am not very optimistic having put my money here. I feel I have not been given enough information and I was told about it today in the morning. I put all my retirement remuneration in this but that's life," a depositor told NDTV.

'No CAA', 'Free Kashmir' graffiti found on Bengaluru’s Church Street walls

Controversy
“Free Kashmir”, “Fascist Modi Resign”, “No CAA”, “No NRC” was some of the writing found on the walls on the walls of Church Street.
Graffiti on the walls of Bengaluru’s Church Street has been there for a long time. But if you looked at the graffiti closely on Tuesday morning, there were some additions. “Free Kashmir”, “Fascist Modi Resign”, “No CAA”, “No NRC” was some of the writing found on the walls on the walls of Church Street. Some of the words were spray painted on the already existing graffiti on abandoned walls and shutters of Shringar Shopping Complex opposite the Times Now office. More such slogans, such as “BJP is cancer, kill it before it kills you” and “I will not show my papers” were spray painted on walls adjoining the MG Road metro station on the Church Street exit. Cubbon Park Police Station Inspector B Iyyana Reddy told TNM that an FIR will be registered by them on a suo motu basis, and no suspects have been identified yet. When asked under what sections the FIR will be registered, he said, “At this moment we cannot disclose further details.” Chetan Singh Rathore, DCP Central, also told TNM,"We just came to know of the incident this morning. We have not registered a case yet but we will do it today under the Prevention of Destruction and Loss of Property Act. In the past as well, there have been cases of people drawing graffiti. A few months ago, Central division police had arrested two people for drawing on boundary walls, and drawing graffiti. We will look at CCTV footage and take all measures to find out who destroyed the property."  TNM had seen two police vehicles and officials inspecting the new graffiti on Tuesday morning. However, they did not reveal any further details. The police will have to file FIR as some of the graffiti found on Tuesday morning said “Modi die”. These come at a time the country is seeing widespread protests against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act and National Register of Citizens. Despite continuing protests however, the CAA came into effect on January 10. However, the rules for the Act - such as what documents will be needed to prove citizenship and so on, have not been notified yet.

Will expand Cabinet before my Davos visit: Karnataka CM Yediyurappa

Reiterating that he would keep his promise of making disqualified legislators as ministers, he said cabinet expansion would take place soon after his meeting with party president Amit Shah.
Days after indicating that he may not travel to Davos to attend the World Economic Forum later this month, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Monday said he would attend the global meet, and that the expansion of his ministry would take place before his foreign tour. Reiterating that he would keep his promise of making disqualified legislators who won the December 5 bye-polls on BJP tickets as ministers, he said cabinet expansion would take place soon after his meeting with party president Amit Shah on the matter. This comes amid repeated delays in his Delhi visit. Disqualified legislators like AH Vishwanath, who lost during the bye-polls, are also demanding a ministerial berth. "There is no truth in speculations regarding the cabinet expansion. In fact Amit Shah had given me time for a meeting today in Delhi, but I had to attend important programmes here. Tomorrow, if possible, I will cancel all my programmes and go to Delhi and get cabinet (expansion) cleared. There is no problem in that," Yediyurappa said. Speaking to reporters Bengaluru, he said the legislators who have won in the bye-polls need not worry about the speculations. "I will fulfil the promise that I have made. If Amit Shah is available, I will try to go to Delhi tomorrow. If not he is coming here (Karnataka) on January 17 and 18, will get things cleared and expand the ministry," he said. Yediyurappa had earlier said he would be leaving for New Delhi, probably on January 11 or 12, to discuss cabinet expansion with the BJP high command. However on Saturday, he said he has decided to discuss it with Shah during the latter's visit to the state next week. Shah will be here to address a massive rally at Hubballi on January 18 as part of BJP's nationwide outreach programme to create awareness on the Citizenship Amendment Act. To a question about his visit to Davos, Yediyurappa said "everyone is persuading me to go, so I have decided to go. As I'm being sent by the central government, so I will have to go, and I will go and come." He is expected to leave for Davos on January 20. Yediyurappa, along with Union ministers Piyush Goyal and Mansukh Mandaviya,as well as chief ministers - Amarinder Singh (Punjab), Kamal Nath (Madhya Pradesh) are among those expected join over 100 Indian CEOs in the Swiss ski resort town of Davos later this month for the WEF's 50th annual meeting. According to reports, disqualified legislators who were re-elected during the December 5 bypolls on BJP tickets and are all set to become Ministers too had put pressure on Yediyurappa to expand the cabinet before the Davos visit. As the Chief Minister has already made it clear that 11 of the disqualified JDS-Congress MLAs who got re-elected in the bye-polls on BJP tickets will be made ministers, lobbying has been on in the party for the remaining ministerial berths. Currently there are 18 Ministers, including the Chief Minister in the cabinet, that has a sanctioned strength of 34. Cabinet expansion will not be an easy task for the Chief Minister as he will have to strike a balance by accommodating the victorious disqualified legislators as promised and also make place for old guards, upset at being "neglected" in the first round of the induction exercise. He also has to give adequate representation to various castes and regions in his cabinet and also deal with allocation of key portfolios. Meanwhile, A H Vishwanath, a disqualified legislator, who lost on a BJP ticket from Hunsur, expressed his Ministerial ambitions, as he sought Ministerial posts to all 17 disqualified legislators, whose revolt led to collapse of the coalition government and paved way for BJP to come to power. "....Asking (Minister's post) is our responsibility because 17 of us have cooperated for his (CM) government to come to power and demolition of unconstitutional coalition government. "We have asked that 17 of should be given opportunity," he told reporters in Raichur. Another disqualified legislator who lost during the bye-polls on a BJP ticket, MTB Nagaraj from Hoskote, too has been lobbying for a Ministerial post.

Assuring depositors that their money was "100 per cent safe" with the bank, Sri Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank Chairman K Ramakrishna in Bengaluru on Monday said 62 loans had locked up Rs 300 crore of deposit. "Your money is 100 per cent safe with Sri Guru Raghavendra Sahakara Bank. It's my responsibility," Ramakrishna said at Sri Guru Narasimha Kalyanamandira auditorium, to assure depositors. He was addressing angry customers of the bank at a public hearing. Due to the 62 dud loans, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) had restricted the lender from executing business, Ramakrishna said amid shouting by depositors. The RBI has limited withdrawals by depositors to Rs 35,000. "The bank is saying I can't withdraw more than Rs 35,000. In case of our fixed deposit maturing, we will have to renew it as we can't encash it, " said Nagaraj M, 49, who has been dealing with the bank for the past six years. To assuage customers, the call to an assistant commissioner of police by Bengaluru South MP Tejaswi Surya -- not present -- was relayed on loudspeaker live and the MP claimed that he had spoken to Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman to help the customers. Ramakrishna said he would meet customers again on January 19 with all the details and numbers. Dramatic scenes and pandemonium ruled the auditorium before his arrival. Thousands of bank customers threatened to go en masse to the police station and file a case against Ramakrishna. As he addressed the gathering in Kannada, hundreds of depositors shouted back at him seeking clarifications. At the auditorium, thousands of depositors earlier demanded the bank chairman's presence to clarify the matter. The lender had invited depositors to the auditorium at 6 p.m. to update them on the bank's status, following a RBI directive restricting the bank from doing business with immediate effect. "We want the bank's directors here," shouted a depositor from the stage. A handful of policemen were trying to control the crowd and bring order to the assembly. Many elderly and retired persons had arrived to know the fate of their savings. Several women were also present at the meeting. "It was a good bank with only 0.5 per cent NPAs. Now we can't trust any bank. See what happened with the PMC Bank," said another customer. Shankar Sharma, 38, an employee of a private company, said majority of depositors were senior citizens and retirees. "I don't have an account with the bank, but my mother, uncle, aunt have deposited money in it. I came for them, " said Sharma. He said many of the bank's 35,000 clientele deposited more than Rs 5 lakh, which had total deposits of Rs 1,600 crore. The bank started operations in 1999. Ramakrishna was escorted away to safety by the police after his speech even as the depositors were screaming and agitating for justice.
