At an Federation of Karnataka Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FKCCI) event held earlier, the minister pointed out that casinos have been set up and utilised to increase revenue from tourism in several countries. Several have reacted to this, including Congress party’s DK Shivakumar. “Let the CM clarify what the budget allocation will be like for the casino, then we can see,” stated Shivakumar following the remarks on introducing casinos to boost tourism. He further added that it would only be decided following implementation, whether building casinos would have a positive impact on the state. Others, such as minister BC Patil, are more in favour of introducing casinos to increase tourism. “It’s there in Sri Lanka, Singapore. What’s wrong with it being done here also? It’s just a way to develop tourism. CT Ravi has brought this up today and that is a good thing,” he said to media personnel. Minister CT Ravi, at the moment has stated that there are no plans to open casinos in the state of Karnataka, adding that Indians spend on casinos abroad and that the country “loses out” on foreign revenue incurred in such a manner.

Crime

All India Majlis-e-Ittehad-ul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Waris Pathan has been booked for allegedly making a hate speech at an anti-CAA rally in Karnataka's Kalaburagi, police said on Sunday. "We have booked a case against Pathan for reportedly making a hate speech at an anti-CAA rally in the city on February 15 and summoned him to appear before us for interrogation by February 29," Kalaburagi police commissioner MN Nagaraj told IANS on phone. Kalaburagi is about 580 kms north of Bengaluru in the southern state. The case was booked against the Mumbai-based Pathan under sections 153A ( Promoting enmity between different groups on ground of religion) and 117 (Abetting commission of offence by the public or by more than ten persons) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) on a complaint by a local lawyer - Shwetha Omprakash Rathod that the former made provocative statements against the Hindu community. "Though the organsiers took permission to hold a protest rally and a public meeting on last Saturday, we learnt from the complaint and a video footage of the event Pathan saying in Hindustani that '15 crore Muslims were more than a match to 100 crore Hindus' to the gathering," said Nagaraj. Pathan, 51, is a former legislator of the Hyderabad-based party from Mumbai's Byculla Assembly segment and a practicing lawyer in Maharashtra. The complaint also quoted Pathan bragging in Hindi and Urdu "to those saying we have only put our women at the forefront of the protest against the CAA, NRC and NPR...only our lionesses have come out till now and you are already sweating. Imagine what would happen if we all men come together. We are 15 crore, which can outweigh their 100 crore". On receiving police summons for questioning at Kalaburagi, Pathan told reporters in Mumbai on Saturday that he had no intention to hurt the sentiments of any community and blamed the media for twisting his speech to defame him, his party and the minority community. "I take back my words if they hurt anyone and apologise for the same," said Pathan, adding in a tweet that he was a proud Indian and respects the plurality of the country but was angry like many others who believe in the Constitution, with the government for imposing the CAA on the people. Criticising Pathan for his hate speech AIMIM president and Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi advised the former to refrain from making such provocative remarks in public. Disowning Pathan's speech and conduct, party's Maharashtra unit president and Aurangabad Lok Sabha member Imtiyaz Jaleel said his party does not endorse such offensive statements. "We will seek explanation from him (Pathan) on his remarks," said Jaleel, adding the party would give guidelines to its members on making public speeches.

Karnataka Minister threatens to resign if fellow rebel MLA not given cabinet post

Politics
Mahesh Kumathalli was not accommodated despite winning the bypolls in December 2019 from Athani constituency.
File image
Karnataka Water Resources Minister Ramesh Jarkiholi on Saturday threatened to resign as minister as well as the member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) if his confidant and Athani MLA Mahesh Kumathalli is not given a ministerial position in the BS Yediyurappa cabinet. Jarkiholi and Kumathalli were among the 17 rebel Congress and JD(S) MLAs who brought down the coalition government headed by HD Kumaraswamy in July 2019 and helped install the BJP government with full majority in the state. Out of the 17, 12 of them got re-elected as BJP MLAs in the bye-polls in December 2019, cementing the position of BS Yediyurappa as the Chief Minister of the state for the remainder of the term. Out of these 12, 10 of them took oath as ministers earlier on February 10. However, Kumathalli was not accommodated despite winning the bypolls in December 2019 from Athani constituency. Since then, he had been constantly reminding the BJP of its 'Vachana Dharma.' "Certain things cannot be said openly. Mahesh Kumathalli was mainly responsible for the formation of the BJP government in the state. He may get a good post. We will not let injustice happen to him," Jarkiholi told reporters in Belagavi. When journalists reminded Jarkiholi of Kumathalli's statement that the team responsible for bringing down the coalition government has left him in lurch, Jarkiholi said, "He has not said that. The moment he says that, I will resign as MLA. I will resign as minister also. Let him come out and say once. It's not possible." Meanwhile, Kumathalli said he was no longer discontented. "No injustice has happened to me. The irrigation facility in our area has improved and we are quite content," he added. He also said the projects that were pending for decades have now been taken up. To a question on the denial of ministerial berth which he has been yearning for, Kumathalli said, "When the time comes, I will become a minister."

Gangster Ravi Pujari in police net again, arrested in South Africa

Crime
While Udupi-born Ravi Pujari was arrested in January 2019, he could not be deported to India as he got himself implicated in a ‘fake’ fraud case in Senegal.
File image
Underworld don Ravi Pujari, who is a former aide of Chhota Rajan and had fled after being arrested in West Africa’s Senegal in January 2019, was arrested again in South Africa on Saturday. The arrest was made by a joint team of Indian intelligence agency Research and Analysis Wing (RAW), Mangaluru police and Senegalese police, after the Interpol issued 13 red corner notices against him. According to police officials, he will be brought to India by Monday. After being arrested in Senegal on January 21 last year, the don reportedly got himself implicated in a fraud case, foiling attempts by the Indian government to get him deported from the country. In June 2019, a local court in Senegal granted him bail and asked him not to leave the country until the hearing in the matter was over. However, he jumped the bail and had allegedly escaped to South Africa, where he was involved in a major drug trafficking and extortion racket. Sources in the Indian Intelligence told IANS that Ravi Pujari was located in a remote village in South Africa. Based on a tip-off from the Indian external intelligence agency, the Senegal police air-dashed to South Africa last week. According to IANS, which accessed the don's new passport, Pujari has been using a fake identity, as Anthony Fernandes, a citizen of Burkina Faso, a landlocked country in West African. His date of birth is shown as January 25, 1961 Pujari, who is believed to be a movie junkie influenced by Amitabh Bachchan's portrayal as Anthony Gonsalves in Amar Akbar Anthony, was using the name Anthony Fernandes.  The new passport was issued on July 10, 2013, and is valid till July 8, 2023. The passport showed his profession as Agent Commercial, which means that he is designated as a businessman. He has reportedly been running a chain of restaurants called Namaste India in Senegal, Burkina Faso and neighbouring countries. Earlier, during his arrest in 2019, Pujari got off the hook after claiming that his name is Anthony Fernandez and a citizen of Burkina Faso. At the time, the Burkina Faso citizenship issue had stood out to be a barrier in the extradition issue. Moreover, one of his aides had falsely filed a case against him, which put a legal hurdle in the extradition process as the case had to find its logical end in the same country before his extradition process could begin. Since Ravi Pujari has now been arrested from South Africa, the Indian authorities are planning to deport him to India “informally”, the Mangaluru police told TNM. Back in India, Pujari is wanted in close to a hundred criminal cases ranging from murders, extortions, kidnapping, and making threat calls to Bollywood stars to top politicians. Shehla Rashid, politician Jignesh Mevani and Bollywood singer Arijit Singh are few of his recent targets. He has been absconding from the Indian authorities for two decades now after he fled the country while on bail in a murder case. In recent years, he had painted himself as a ‘patriotic criminal’ along with Chhota Rajan.    The mafioso first made headlines in early 2000 when he started extorting huge amounts from famous Bollywood personalities and builders. He was involved in an attempt to murder case, aimed at killing a prominent lawyer of Mumbai. Pujari's wife Padma and three children also fled India and some of them hold Burkina Faso passports. His son, who was recently married in Australia, reportedly holds an Australian passport. (With inputs from IANS) Read How cops traced don Ravi Pujari living under a different name in Senegal

Wedding cards more expensive than Ambani's? How Rs 5 crore worth drugs were hidden

Crime
This came after Rs 5 crore-worth drugs were seized by custom officials from garment spools on Tuesday.
On Friday, the courier terminal at the Kempegowda International Airport in Bengaluru received packets of wedding invites, which later turned out to be more expensive than the wedding cards by the Ambani family for Isha Ambani’s wedding. The package seemed unusually heavy for a wedding card. On investigation, the authorities recovered 5 kgs of banned Ephedrine drug  packed into these wedding cards.. The Rs 5 crore drug, which was packed in packets of fake wedding cards, was being sent to Australia, the officials said. This came after a similar Rs 5 crore-worth drugs were seized by the customs officials from garment spools on Tuesday. Customs officials at the #Bengaluru airport seize 5 kg of ephedrine, concealed in wedding invitations that were to be shipped to Australia. Imagine how innovative and alert the officials have to be to counter this menace. pic.twitter.com/GqqWwNDqWR — Snehesh Alex Philip (@sneheshphilip) February 23, 2020 This came after Rs 5 crore-worth drugs were seized by the customs officials from garment spools on Tuesday.  The Times of India quoted the Central Intelligence Unit of the Customs Department at the air cargo complex in the airport, as saying that the garments and the fake wedding cards for a wedding in April this year arrived for export to Australia. According to the officials, there were 43 such foldable cards that were made of cardboard material. The bottom layer of each layer had 80 polythene packets stored inside, which had the powdered substance inside. After the suspicious substance was sent for testing, they found it to be Ephedrine, which is a controlled substance (like ganja and heroin) under the Narcotics, Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act, 1985. On further investigation, the sleuths also found that the wedding was fictitious and it was only a means to smuggle drugs. The Hindu reported that another 5 kg of the same drug was discovered earlier last week and the wedding invitations were being sent  by a Madurai-based exporter. Now the investigators think that the person is part of a larger international drug racket.  The report said the drug is used as a medicine to prevent low blood pressure during a spinal anesthesia. This is also illicitly used as an appetite suppressant. The drug is used for short-term relief for many respiratory symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness and wheezing and is a decongestant and bronchodilator. However, it is not prescribed if the patient is not suffering from asthma.
