Bengaluru has longest wait time for Uber, lowest completion rate of trips

Transport
Due to the longer waiting time, riders also tend to cancel trips, leading to a lower completion rate for trips in Bengaluru.
Have you found yourself impatiently waiting to get an Uber cab in Bengaluru? Your frustration may not be unfounded; an internal survey by the cab aggregator service has found that Bengalureans on average wait the longest for their cab to arrive compared to three other Indian metro cities – Delhi NCR, Hyderabad, and Mumbai. The average ETA (estimated time of arrival) for an Uber cab in Bengaluru is seven minutes. Commuters in Delhi NCR hand have the lowest average ETA of four minutes, while Mumbai and Hyderabad have the mean ETA of five minutes each. Due to the longer waiting time, riders also tend to cancel trips, leading to a lower completion rate for trips in Bengaluru at 45%. Comparatively, Delhi NCR has a completion rate of 71%, Hyderabad 75% and Mumbai 65%. This data is derived from the percentage of trips that are completed, based on requests made. Uber has concluded that the higher ETA and subsequently lower completion rate are a result of Uber’s dynamic pricing mechanism (that adjusts fares according to the demand for cabs) not being able to work at its best due to fare cap limitations in place in the city. The traffic congestion also has a role to play in the higher ETA, Uber said.  An official with a cab aggregator had told TNM last year that because of the Bengaluru government’s decision to cap maximum fare to Rs 24 per kilometre for cars worth Rs 5-10 lakh, the drivers no longer have an incentive to sit through traffic during peak hours, leading to lower number of taxis during that time. The official had said then that the average wait time for a cab was 17 minutes. “Compared to drivers in Hyderabad or Chennai, Bengaluru drivers are making 25% less than, despite being on the road for 10 hours,” the official had also told TNM. This is reflected in Uber’s recent data also. “Taking Hyderabad as a relative, drivers in Mumbai earn 8% lower and in Bangalore earn almost 25-30% lower,” Uber said. Congress agitates at Bengaluru civic body head office against Town Hall protest ban

Protest
Congress workers sat on the footsteps of the council building and shouted slogans against the ruling BJP.
Protesting against the newly enforced ban on protests in front of the age-old Puttannachetty Town Hall in Bengaluru by the city Mayor Goutham Kumar, the Congress staged a demonstration at the civic body headquarters on Tuesday morning. Congress workers sat on the footsteps of the council building and shouted slogans holding placards saying, “Ruling BJP party are not aware of Democracy and Right to Protest.” The protesters demanded that the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Council roll back the decision. The BBMP head office incidentally is just over 500 metres away from Town Hall, which has seen protests in the city over the decades over a wide array of issues. Even the recent wave of protests against the contentious Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) were held at Town Hall. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನ ಟೌನ್ ಹಾಲ್ ಮುಂಭಾಗ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ ನಡೆಸುವ ಹಕ್ಕನ್ನು ಬಿಜೆಪಿಯ ಬಿಬಿಎಂಪಿ ಆಡಳಿತ ವರ್ಗ ಕಿತ್ತುಕೊಳ್ಳುವ ಮೂಲಕ ಜನರ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆಗಳನ್ನು ಹತ್ತಿಕ್ಕಲಾಗುತ್ತಿರುವುದರ ಜೊತೆಗೆ ಸಾರ್ವಜನಿಕರ ಅಭಿವ್ಯಕ್ತಿ ಸ್ವಾತಂತ್ರ್ಯವನ್ನು ಮೊಟಕುಗೊಳಿಸುತ್ತಿರುವುದನ್ನು ಖಂಡಿಸಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲಾ ಕಾಂಗ್ರೆಸ್'ನಿಂದ ಪ್ರತಿಭಟನೆ. pic.twitter.com/Xn0jzW0gDh — Karnataka Congress (@INCKarnataka) March 3, 2020 On Saturday however, the BJP led by its Mayor passed a resolution unilaterally to ban protests at the iconic location, citing a slump in revenues from reservations at Town Hall due to continuous protests. Read: No more protests outside Town Hall: Bengaluru civic body passes resolution BBMP officials told TNM that the Finance Department had approached BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar citing a drop in revenues, who in turn had suggested that the Mayor to take the step. As of March 1, the number of reservations for the current financial year was 58, compared to 88 reservations made for the financial year 2018-19. Reiterating the decision, speaking to TNM on Tuesday, Mayor Goutham Kumar said, “In Bengaluru, we have several places designated for protests like Maurya Circle, Freedom Park and Anand Rao Circle. Town Hall is located near a major junction and protests there lead to severe traffic jams near the Canara Bank signal and the one near the BBMP office. We must think about not inconveniencing the public as well." However, independent activists have called it stifling of dissent and said, unlike the Town Hall, no other venue is as easily approachable from all sides of the city.  Also read: Slump in reservations for Bengaluru’s Town Hall cited as reason for protest ban

Hyderabad coronavirus victim's Bengaluru colleagues told to be in home quarantine

Coronavirus
A 24-year-old man who was found to be positive for the infection had recently traveled to Bengaluru.
Health officials in Bengaluru have begun taking extensive measures to curb potential coronavirus cases. This comes after a 24-year-old man from Hyderabad, who works in a tech company in Bengaluru, was found to be positive for the virus. The young man had recently travelled to Bengaluru from Dubai. “We have begun tracing and contacting the individuals that the man may have interacted with and have informed them to remain under home quarantine,” stated Health secretary Jawaid Akhtar to TNM. The techie reported to his office in Bengaluru on February 20 and worked there for around two days. Individuals will have to remain under isolation at home for a period of 14 days, should they develop fever, cough, cold or any other symptoms of an infection, they have been told to get admitted at a hospital for further workup. Any positive cases will be kept under isolation and treated. Karnataka districts such as Raichur and Gulbarga, which border the state of Telangana, have been placed on high alert following the confirmation of the positive case in Hyderabad. Contact tracing has already begun in Telangana. Shortly after the announcement came of the positive case in the city, health officials conducted a meeting and briefed the media after. “There were around 27 others on the bus from Bengaluru to Hyderabad, who will be traced and notified. All those who were in touch with the man and worked with him have also been notified. We are working with officials from Karnataka and the Centre to keep tab on the issue,” stated Telangana state Health Minister Etela Rajender. The man who tested positive for the virus is believed to have come in contact with individuals from Hong Kong while working in Dubai. Since then, health officials in India have added Dubai to the list of countries from where passengers arrive will undergo screening. The coronavirus outbreak began in early December 2019 in Wuhan city in China. Several individuals developed pneumonia-like symptoms, which were later found to have been caused by a new strain of coronavirus. The coronavirus disease (COVID-2019) is caused by the same group of viruses that also were responsible for the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) outbreak in 2002 and the Middle Eastern Respiratory Syndrome (MERS) in 2013.

Police SUV topples after hitting car and pole in Bengaluru, driver booked

Accident
A case was registered against the driver Sridhar under Section 279 for rash and negligent driving.
A police SUV (sports utility vehicle) on Monday afternoon turned turtle at the Bengaluru city centre after hitting a cab and crashing into a pole. The driver Sridhar sustained minor injuries, while the two vehicles involved in the incident suffered damages.  Traffic movement on the busy Trinity Circle was disrupted for some time around 1 pm. The police vehicle was approaching the Old Airport Road from Trinity Circle on MG Road, when the incident occurred.  Bangalore Mirror reported  that the driver who was at the wheel of the police car, lost control and hit a pole while on his way towards the Old Airport Road. According to police, Sridhar lost control while trying to avoid hitting a biker who came in front suddenly. As a result, Sridhar hit a cab (a sedan) in front of him and after that crashed into a pole. The Times of India report said a case has been registered against Sridhar under Section 279 (Whoever drives any vehicle, or rides, on any public way in a manner so rash or negligent as to endanger human life) of the Indian Penal Code and a probe has been launched by Halasuru Traffic Police.  Deccan Herald reported that the cab driver apparently did not want to file a complaint as his vehicle had only suffered minor damages, as told by an investigating officer. The report said traffic flow was restored swiftly after the police along with locals moved the vehicles to the side of the road and later towed them away. The SUV was meant for the use of DCP (Deputy Commissioner of Police) Crime-1 Kuldeep Kumar Jain’s family, the DH report said.

BJP MLA's ‘derogatory’ remarks against 102-yr-old freedom fighter rocks K’taka Assembly

Controversy
Opposition parties thronged the well of the House, demanding that they be allowed to raise the matter and forcing repeated adjournments.
BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal
BJP MLA Basanagouda Patil Yatnal's "derogatory" comments against 102-year-old freedom fighter H S Doreswamy rocked the Karnataka Assembly as it met for the budget session on Monday with the ruling BJP and opposition crossing swords. Opposition parties thronged the well of the House, demanding that they be allowed to raise the matter and forcing repeated adjournments. The ruling BJP opposed attempts by the Leader of the Opposition Siddaramaiah to raise the issue, without any prior notice. The House also witnessed Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa replying to the debate on motion of thanks to the Governor for his address to the joint sitting of the state legislature, and also the motion getting adopted with voice vote, amid sloganeering by opposition members from the well. Amid the din, eight bills were tabled, including The Karnataka State Universities (Amendment) Bill, 2020 on setting up Raichur University, the Sarvajna Kshetra Development Authority Bill and Karnataka Regulation of Pay and Pension of Teacher in Higher Educational Institutions Bill, 2020. Yatnal's recent comments against Doreswamy, calling him a "fake freedom fighter" and "Pakistani agent" sparked a row, with opposition parties up in arms against him in the last few days. The Congress has even been demanding revocation of his assembly membership. According to Congress leaders, Yatnal's comments are in violation of the Constitution as by disrespecting a freedom fighter like Doreswamy, he had disrespected the freedom movement, which is in "violation of our fundamental duties." Yatnal has made it clear that there was no question of withdrawing his statements against Doreswamy and even called him a "mouthpiece" in favour of the JD(S) and Congress. Several BJP legislators have come out in defence of the Vijayapura city MLA, questioning the Congress and the freedom fighter for their alleged comments against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Veer Savarkar. As the House met for the day, the first day of the budget session, soon after the obituary reference to departed personalities, Siddaramaiah tried to raise the issue by terming it as a matter of "urgent public importance." He said the Speaker can allow him to raise the matter under residual powers that the Chair has. However, the Speaker, Vishweshwar Hegde Kageri, disallowing him, said he would go by the agenda as per which the Chief Minister's reply to the Governor's address has been listed and would consider the issue Siddaramaiah was trying to raise only after it was completed. Siddaramaiah, however, continued to raise the issue and alleged that Yatnal has made derogatory remarks against Doreswamy and has even reiterated it. Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister J C Madhuswamy and Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai then asked the Chair as to under which rule Siddaramaiah was raising the issue. Siddaramaiah said Doreswamy is a freedom fighter, which is known to the country and Yatnal's "derogatory comments" against him were an "insult" to freedom fighters and the freedom movement of the country. Minister C T Ravi questioned Siddaramaiah and Congress MLAs supporting him, about comments made against the Prime Minister and freedom fighters like Veer Savarkar. Several members from the treasury benches too objected to Siddaramaiah trying to raise issues without giving prior notice. In response, Siddaramaiah said the Speaker has certain inherent and residual powers, exercising which he can permit him. He continued to refer to Yatnal's comments and the ruling side again objected to it, leading to heated exchanges. The Speaker intervened and allowed the Chief Minister to reply to the motion of thanks to the Governor for his address and said he would look into the matter raised by Siddaramaiah only after that. Protesting against this, Siddaramaiah led his party members to the well of the House. JD(S) members too followed. Slogans like "jai to freedom fighters", "save democracy and the Constitution", "down down British agents" reverberated in the House, as Yediyurappa read out his reply to the Governor's address. After Yediyurappa's reply, the motion of thanks was put to vote and adopted amid sloganeering by the opposition. The Speaker then adjourned the House for 30 minutes. With opposition members continuing to protest from the well when the House met again, the Speaker adjourned the House for lunch, saying he would speak to floor leaders to discuss how the stalemate could be resolved. The ruckus continued post lunch as Congress leaders trooped into the well of the House and raised slogans. Finally, the house was adjourned for the day.
