Bidar court says no sedition in kids play in school, caused no disharmony

Bidar sedition case
The judge noted that the drama did not cause any disharmony in society and cited lack of grounds for sedition.
The district and sessions court in Bidar has stated that the contents of the play staged in Shaheen Primary and High School in January did not prima facie amount to sedition. "What the children have expressed is that they will have to leave the country if they do not produce the documents and except that, there is nothing to show that he has committed the offence of sedition. The dialogue in my considered opinion does not go to bring into hatred or contempt or to excite disaffection towards the government," district judge Managoli Premavathi observed while granting bail to members of the school management charged with sedition. The judge noted that the drama did not cause any disharmony in society and cited lack of grounds for sedition. "Ingredients of Section 124A of IPC (sedition) are not prima facie made out...The drama has not caused any disharmony in the society," the judge stated in her order.  The case caught the public eye after two women - the mother of a 11-year-old student and a teacher at the school - were arrested on charges of sedition over a play staged in the school on January 21. Nazbunnissa, the mother of a student who uttered dialogues about Prime Minister Narendra Modi in the play, and Fareeda Begum, the head teacher of the school's primary section were arrested based on a complaint by a right wing activist alleging sedition. The play voiced dissent against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) and was staged by students of classes 4,5, and 6. Police officials in Bidar were criticised for turning up at the school five times, including once in uniform, to question students involved in the play. The women were finally granted bail after spending two weeks in jail. The 11-year-old student initially stayed with her neighbour as her mother is a widow. She later shifted to the school hostel before returning home after her mother's release from jail. In addition to the two women, Mohammed Yousuf Rahim, a journalist, Abdul Qadir, President of Shaheen group of institutions, and four members of the school management were also booked for sedition. However, they were not arrested by the police and six of them were granted anticipatory bail by the Bidar district court. Mohammed Yousuf Rahim was booked for uploading a video of the play on social media and he was absconding after the video of the play was shared widely. "If at all it were not uploaded on facebook, even the public could not come to know about the dialogue of that drama," noted judge Managoli Premavathi.

In a horrific accident, 13 persons were killed and three others injured when the two Sport Utility Vehicles (SUVs) collided on the Mangaluru-Bengaluru National Highway (NH-75) early Friday morning. The deceased include four women, two children and the drivers of both the vehicles. Three persons were injured in the accident and are undergoing treatment. "The accident occurred when a compact SUV with four passengers crashed into another SUV after hitting and jumping the road divider and toppling near Kunigal around 1 am," Tumakuru Superintendent of Police Vamsi Krishna told IANS on the phone. Of the 13 deceased, 10 people hailed from Krishnagiri in Tamil Nadu. These include four men and four women, apart from a four-year-old girl and one-year-old toddler. "They were on way to Bengaluru from Dharmasthla pilgrim town in the state's southwest Dakshina Kannada district, Krishna said. Karnataka government allocates Rs 500 crore for Mahadayi project in 2020 Budget

Water
The allocation of funds comes after the central government notified the final award laid down by the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal.
In an unsurprising move, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa allocated Rs 500 crore for the construction of the Kalasa and Banduri reservoirs as part of the budget for the fiscal year 2020-21.  The allocation of funds comes after the central government notified the final award laid down by the Mahadayi Water Disputes Tribunal. The tribunal in August 2018 allocated 13.42 tmcft of water from the Mahadayi river to Karnataka. The river flows through Karnataka, Goa and Maharashtra.  "Our government is committed to the speedy continuation of the much anticipated Mahadayi Project which is very helpful to the people and farmers of the North Karnataka region. The central government has issued the notification as per the direction of the Hon’ble Supreme Court. We congratulate the central government for this. In accordance with the notification, our Government will provide Rs 500 crore in the year 2020-21 to take up the works of Kalasa and Banduri nalas under the Mahadayi Project," Yediyurappa announced at the Vidhana Soudha on Thursday. Some activists involved in the agitation for the Mahadayi project's implementation welcomed the allocation of funds. "We welcome the move to allocate Rs 500 crore for the Mahadayi project. We also welcome the move to reallocate key offices to Belagavi," Ashok Chandargi, an activist based in Belagavi told TNM. However, former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah criticised the state government's allocation of Rs 500 crore for the Mahadayi project terming it as 'meagre'. "They have allocated Rs 500 crore for Kalasa-Banduri and Rs 1,500 for Yettinahole. That is less than what we allocated. Rs 40,000 crore is needed for the Upper Krishna Project and the amount they have allocated is meagre," Siddaramaiah said, speaking to reporters following the budget presentation.  He further claimed that the BJP was taking credit for the allocation of funds for the Mahadayi project. "They are taking credit for Mahadayi issue. Our lawyers got the tribunal’s order. We got the Mahadayi tribunal verdict when our government is in power. They did not hold talks with Goa. Now they are taking credit for it. Prime Minister Narendra Modi refused to speak to us when we went to make a representation for Mahadayi issue," Siddaramaiah added.

The police are questioning the students. Vijayapura Deputy Commissioner Y S Patil said that the Supervisor in charge at the Examination Centre where the incident was reported, has been suspended. The disruption is only for two hours, between 7 am and 9 am on Sunday, March 8.  Maintenance work has been cited as the reason for the disruption. The metro workers are set to work on a damaged portion of pillars between Rajajinagar and Kuvempu road, the Times of India reported.  BMRCL said the metro will not be operational during the specified time, only on the Green line between Nagasandra, the last stop on the Green Line of the metro, and Mantri Square Sampige road, the Malleshwaram stop. The thirteen affected stations are Nagasandra, Dasarahalli, Jalahalli, Peenya Industry, Peenya, Goraguntapalya, Yeshwantpur, Sandal soap factory, Mahalakshmi, Rajajinagar, Kuvempu road, Srirampura, and Mantri Square Sampige road. The rest of the Green line services, that is, from the Kempegowda Majestic Station, towards Jayanagar and Yelachenahalli, will not be affected. The Purple Line between Byappanahalli, MG Road, Vijayanagar and Mysore road, will not be affected by the service disruption, and is set to function as normal. This is not the first time that the metro has disrupted services on the weekend for maintenance work. The metro has previously disrupted services on various lines to tend to their infrastructure, especially on the weekends as they see fewer passengers. On February 29, the Bengaluru metro authorities announced that one person had died while working on chipping the escalator section of a metro station near Kengeri. The police have booked a case of causing death due to negligence. The worker was said to have not had proper safety equipment, which lead to the case of accidental death.
