Fisherfolk in Udupi are coming back empty handed from the sea, face losses

Fish
Despite their appeals, the Karnataka government has not yet responded to the fisherfolk’s plight.
'There are plenty of fish in the sea', goes the popular saying. However, for hundreds of fishermen on Karnataka’s coastline, this is hardly the case. Fishing boats have had to been shored, because fishermen who have been going out to sea have been coming back almost or completely empty handed for a couple of months now, according to Daiji world. This, despite it being fishing season, which begins around November and goes on till April. There is a ban on fishing after that, as the breeding season for the fish begins in summer. It seems like all the fish have moved away from the coast, said Yathish Baikampady, former President of the Fishermen's Association in coastal Karnataka. "Usually, after a cyclone, fisherfolk hope to see a bumper catch in fish. Expecting this, people took boats on a loan in anticipation to go out to the sea. Around this time, we would have exported tonnes of fish to other countries, making huge profits. However, the fishing community was shocked to see a very small catch of fish this year. Some people came back with one or two fish when they would have come back with boatfuls earlier. The entire industry is now facing serious losses," he said. The subcontinent saw severe back-to-back cyclones, namely 'Maha' and 'Kyarr' in October 2019. This fishing crisis on the West coast has had serious repercussions for thousands across the Karnataka, and in other parts of India as well, says DD Ganesh, the Deputy Director of Fisheries, Udupi.  "Karnataka is facing a severe crisis, but the case is the same even in Gujarat, Maharashtra and Kerala," he said. Some traditional fishers, such as Chetan, a fisherman on the Udupi coastline, said that the lack of fish this year is due to the practice of banned fishing practices, such as 'light fishing' and trawling. Light fishing is when heavy LED lights are used in the sea to attract the fishes and catch them. The practice was banned by the Central government in 2017 due to risks of the method killing small fishes and affecting traditional fisherfolk. Read: Why traditional fishermen in K'taka are against the use of LED lights in fishing Yathish, however, said that those who indulged in such practices would not have been affected by the lack of fish in the sea, if light fishing was the cause for the dearth of catch. But even light fishing boats have come back empty handed, he said. Fishermen’s associations have been asking for the government to declare a 'fish famine' due to the dire lack of catch this season, the Hindu reported. "Usually, when farmers face a crisis, the state government is quick to assure them of waiving off their loans. We are disappointed to see that the Karnataka government is entirely mute on this issue," Yathish said.

New train service from Bengaluru to Goa: Travel time to Udupi, Karwar reduced

Transport
The existing route from Bengaluru to Karwar takes over 17 hours.
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa flagged off a new train on Friday connecting Bengaluru and Vasco in Goa via the coastal districts of Karnataka. CM Yediyurappa and Union Minister of State of Railways Suresh Angadi flagged off the train at the Yeshwanthpur railway station in the city.  "Increasing connectivity, enhancing convenience" Alongside Hon'ble @CMofKarnataka Shri @BSYBJP, flagged off #Yesvantpur-#Karwar-#Vasco special express and conversion of coaches of #Yesvantpur-#Bijapur express into modern LHB coaches. pic.twitter.com/BF6tBHOYb7 — Suresh Angadi (@SureshAngadi_) March 7, 2020 The train number 16595/16596 will ply between Yeshwantpur and Vasco via Udupi and Karwar. It will reach Udupi via Sakleshpur and Padil. The train will depart Yeshwantpur at 6.45 pm and arrive in Karwar at 8.25 am the next day before reaching Vasco at 10.30 am. The train from Vasco will depart at 3.25 pm and reach Karwar at 5.45 pm. It will depart from Karwar at 6 pm and arrive at Yeshwanthpur at 8 am.  "This train will provide direct connectivity to Bengaluru, Udupi, Kundapur and Karwar and fulfill the long standing demand of the people of the coastal region," read a statement by South Western Railways.  The new train service will replace the existing overnight Karwar express which connected Bengaluru and Karwar. A key change in the new route is that it does not travel to Mangaluru city, thereby saving time for passengers heading to Udupi and Uttara Kannada. "The earlier train was slower by two hours because it would go to Mangaluru junction and then had to reverse the engine and go north," Sanjeev Dyamannavar, an urban transport activist said.  The service was operated in combination with the train from Bengaluru to Kannur in Kerala. The train would bifurcate at Mangaluru with one train heading south to Kannur and another train heading north to Karwar. "It was leading to delays in Mangaluru and this would mean that the train from Bengaluru to Udupi would take over 13 hours," says Dhanush, a regular traveller on the route.  In the new route, the train by-passes Mangaluru and travels to Udupi from Padil in Dakshina Kannada. This means that the train is scheduled to reach Udupi at 4:30 am instead of the earlier timing of 8 am.  The train service to Mangaluru remains unaffected since the Bengaluru-Kannur Express via Mangaluru (four days through Kunigal and three days through Mysuru) will run on a revised setup of 15 coaches. "This arrangement solves several transport issues but the only point of complaint is among people in Mandya and Mysuru since the direct connectivity to Udupi and Karwar is disrupted," adds Sanjeev.

SC stays bail for anti-CAA protesters in Mangaluru

The apex court has stayed the Karnataka High Court order which had granted bail to the protesters, which also noted that local police had tried to cover up use of excess force.

The Supreme Court headed by Chief Justice SA Bobde and two others on the bench, has stayed the bail of 21 persons who were named in the Mangaluru police firing case. The case is regarding the anti-CAA protests in Mangaluru, on December 19, 29019. Two people, unrelated to the protest, were shot dead in a violent push back by the police, reports found. The Karnataka High Court had granted bail to the 21 accused in the case, as the February 18 order noted that the police had used excess force to rein in the protests. "The records indicate that a deliberate attempt has been made to fabricate evidence and to deprive the petitioners of their liberties. Any criminal antecedents of the petitioners are not disputed... There is no direct evidence to connect the petitioners with the alleged offences. The investigation appears to be mala fide and partisan,” the court had observed. Independent fact-finding reports had also formed similar conclusions, as TNM has previously reported. However, this order was challenged by the Karnataka government in the Supreme Court. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the Karnataka government, submitted the opposition to the bail order to the Supreme Court, stating that the protesters were from the Popular Front of India, and they also attacked the police personnel present at the protests of December 19 in Mangaluru. The SC then stayed the bail order, Livemint reported. They had also stated that they were afraid that the protesters would overpower them, however, witnesses questioned the police line, stating that the police used excess force, as TNM had previously reported. There were speculations that the venue would be shifted to Lucknow, however, there is no official word from the Centre yet.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa has written to the Centre asking it to confirm that Aero Show 2021 be held in Bengaluru next year. This comes amidst speculations that the event could be shifted to Lucknow, though the previous editions were held in Bengaluru. Aero Show is a biennial display of the Indian Air Force’s (IAF) prowess and talent and is usually hosted in February. The 12th edition of the show was organised by the Defence Exhibition Organisation in Bengaluru in 2019. The Centre has not yet given word on where the 13th edition of the Aero Show will be held, prompting Karnataka to urge the Centre to “pre-assign appropriate dates in February 2021”, in order to make arrangements for the Aero Show in the state capital. In his letter to Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa refers to two previous letters from his office dated September 20 and December 4 last year. In these letters, Karnataka had asked for the approval from the Centre to host the 13th edition of Aero India. Yediyurappa acknowledges that the Defence Minister has said that the matter would be looked into, in a letter dated October 4, but he asks again that the Centre to confirm the dates for next year. In the letter, Yediyurappa says, "In this regard, I would like to mention here again that Bengaluru has become synonymous with Asia's premier Air Show "Aero India". This Bi-annual (sic) defence air exhibition attracts giants of the industry as well as the general public. I once again seek your indulgence... to convey approval of the Government of India to conduct the 13th edition of the Aero India 2021 in Bengaluru," he wrote. Bengaluru has been the host to the Defence Ministry's biennial Aero Show since its debut in 1996. It is held at the Yelahanka Air base, on the outskirts of the city. However, after two Hawk jets of the IAF aerobatics team crashed into each other resulting in the death of a pilot and injuries to two more in 2019, there was speculation that show could be shifted out of Bengaluru to Lucknow. The event displays the IAF’s technical prowess in handling the latest jets and fighter planes. Further, it is also a chance for those in the international aviation industry to display their innovations and models to the Indian government.
