The police in Bengaluru on Saturday arrested the proprietors and staff of a Kannada TV channel for allegedly blackmailing a self-styled godman based in the city and attempting to extort Rs 50 lakh out of him. The accused have been identified as Muniraju (61) — the owner of the TV channel Kaveri TV and Ravi Kumar (48), Murali (34), Manoj Kumar (24) and Manjunatha— as his staff, according to The Hindu. Reports said that employees of Kaveri TV had targetted 32-year-old Vinay Guruji, who is the founder of one  Mahatma Gandhi Seva Trust. A complaint filed by the godman’s aide alleged that the TV channel would cover the events attended by Vinay but recently they had edited some videos by him to show him in poor light and those videos were uploaded on YouTube. According to Deccan Herald, it was only about two weeks ago that the TV channel staff had called one Prashanth JP who is an aide of Vinay and sought an amount of Rs 30 lakh as the first instalment. They said unless the amount is not paid to them, they would further put out other videos which will harm the godman’s reputation further. Following this, Prasanth approached the police and filed a complaint. As directed by the police, he arranged for the money and met the suspects in their Kengeri apartment. Following this, Manoj and Murali were nabbed by police. Upon interrogation, they gave the names of the other accused. However, this is not the first incident of journalists being accused of charges of extortion. Recently, in September, police had arrested another TV journalist for allegedly honey trapping a man. In that incident, it was reported that the amount demanded from the victim was Rs 25 lakh. The victim was threatened that his photographs in compromising position would be leaked if he did not comply. In that case, another journalist was involved in the conspiracy, police said.

Coronavirus: 1,400 people stuck as cruise ship denied permission to dock at Mangaluru

Authorities of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT) said that they were acting as per the directive of the Ministry of Shipping on the prevention of coronavirus.

An estimated 1,400 international cruise-passengers have been stranded after their cruise ship, MSC Lirica, was denied permission to dock at Mangaluru port by the authorities of New Mangalore Port Trust (NMPT). Officials said that they were acting as per the directive of the Ministry of Shipping on the prevention of coronavirus. According to an NMPT official, the ship, registered from Republic of Panama (ROP), was scheduled to reach NMPT at around 6 am on Saturday morning along with its passengers and crew. “We have all the equipment for screening, detection and quarantine system in place. However, following the decision taken by the Ministry of Shipping on March 5 to stop the disembarkation of the crew or passenger having travel history from the infected countries, we have not allowed the Cruise ship to dock at the port,” he said. According to the ship’s schedule, MSC Lirica departed from Dubai on Saturday, 29 Feb 2020, had ported at Abu Dhabi (UAE), Khor Fakkan (UAE), Muscat, Oman and was to reach Mangaluru on Saturday. It was to proceed to Goa and Mumbai port on Sunday and Monday, respectively. “But, given the directions and jurisdiction from the government, it is unlikely that the ship will get a clearance on those ports as well,” the NMPT authority said. The officials stated that this measure had to be taken despite the crew of the ship convincing the port authorities that the passengers and its crew did not show any symptoms of coronavirus and were free from the viral infection. Meanwhile, Managing Director of Globe Travels William D'Souza said that being the local travel service provider, they had to look into the travel and services of 700 passengers of MSC Lirica who had opted for a ground tour in Mangaluru. “As a matter of premium service, we had hired buses from Bengaluru, arranged for guides and also scheduled to visit local temples, the artisan village in Pilikula and Soans farms. A few of the travellers had also requested a visit to the thousand pillar Basadi at Mudabidri, Gomateshwara Statue in Karkala and Udupi. But since NMPT officials had not kept us in the loop of communication, we are likely to face losses as the passengers themselves have not been allowed to disembark,” D'souza said. Speaking to The News Minute, Rajan Naidu, Managing Director of Shrine Voyages, responsible for handling the passengers of MSC Lirica, said that the manner in which NMPT port handled the matter was not appropriate. “Firstly, the passengers while boarding were cleared for all viruses by the Dubai and Muscat government. In fact, prior to boarding, 500 passengers who had a history of travelling to coronavirus-affected countries and 100 passengers from Italy were denied travel. Indian Immigration had allowed the ship and passengers to travel so there was no reason for NMPT officials to act so harshly,” he said. Further, Naidu added Mumbai port authorities allowed another cruise ship, MV Celebrity Constellation, which had a similar travel route, to dock at Mumbai port on Saturday morning at 8 am. “If it’s a Central government order, it is unclear why NMPT authorities are acting differently. No circular was issued, we simply received a message from the traffic manager at 8.30 pm on Friday, after that no one received any call, even for clarification. Passengers are facing undue mental stress and several local workers are being affected,” he said. He also added that he had flown 25 language-speaking guides from Delhi, ensured buses were brought from Bengaluru for the cruise tour and due to the last-minute change, the travel agencies have incurred a huge loss. Meanwhile, the NMPT authorities said that till March 31, four more ships — including MS Albatros, MS Costa Fortuna, MS Vikingson, M V Seven Seas Mariner — are supposed to reach Mangaluru port. “Approximately 5,000 tourists are supposed to disembark, but subject to the effective directive by NMPT, the ships will be turned away,” an official said. The economic slowdown in the country had a cascading effect on Karnataka, as its growth rate for outgoing fiscal 2019-20 is projected to be 6.8 per cent against 7.8 per cent in the last fiscal (2018-19), a senior official said on Saturday. "The Gross State Domestic Product (GSDP) is estimated to be 1 per cent less at 6.8 per cent for this fiscal from 7.8 per cent in the last fiscal due to slowdown in manufacturing (industry) and services sectors," an official of the state finance department told IANS.. Though the agriculture sector has revived from 1.6 per dent in the drought-hit last fiscal (2018-19) to register 3.9 per cent this fiscal, growth rates of industries and services will be 4.8 per cent and 7.9 per cent for 2019-20 against 5.6 per cent and 9.8 per cent respectively in 2018-19. "The GSDP is projected to grow at 6.3 per cent in the ensuing fiscal of 2020-21 due to continued slowdown in the national economy," the official hinted. According to the state's economic survey for 2019-20, the farm sector grew more than double to 3.9 per cent from 1.6 per cent a year ago due to increase in the production of foodgrains, dairy products and fish catch. Foodgrain production across the state rose to 136 lakh tonnes from 128 lakh tonnes a year ago, the survey revealed. "In line with the national Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth rate decline, Karnataka's GSDP has declined from a high of 13.3 per cent in 2016-17 to a low of 6.8 per cent in 2019-20. "The GSDP has declined from a double-digit growth of 10.8 per cent in 2017-18 to 7.8 per cent in 2018-19 and 6.8 per cent in 2019-20," the survey pointed out. The survey has adopted the all-India growth rate for the services sector growth in the state, which reflects the impact of slowdown in the key sector. At current prices, the southern state's GSDP is expected to be Rs 16,99,115 crore (budget estimates) with a 10 per cent growth rate in the next fiscal (2020-21). "Real estate, professional services and ownership of dwellings contributed 35.31 per cent to the GSDP in 2019-20, followed by manufacturing with 15.32 per cent, trade and repair services 9.51 per cent and crops 7.44 per cent," said the survey findings. Per capital income in the state at current prices is estimated to be Rs 2,31,246 in 2019-20, an increase of 8.8 per cent from Rs 2,12,477 in 2018-19. "The per capita income in the state is 58.4 per cent more than that of all-India rate at Rs 1,35,050 in this fiscal," the survey added.

Against the previous scheme of Congress government of giving seven kg rice to the beneficiaries, the BJP government has decided to give five kg of rice and two kg of wheat. However, some MLAs demanded that the toor daal must also be supplied as they were rotting in the godowns. He told the House that he would travel to all the 30 districts after the Assembly session and make sure that no pilferage happens anywhere. Replying to the opposition leader Siddaramaiahs appeal not to interrupt the Anna Bhagya scheme, Gopalaiah said, We want to provide foodgrain under the Anna Bhagya scheme. I am going to conduct a survey in which district the stealing has been taking place. I will make sure that poor people are not affected. Patil had charged that since 2013 many cases of black- marketing of foodgrains under Anna Bhagya scheme came to light but in none of the cases the investigation reached any logical conclusion and there were no instance of any punishment. Coronavirus
Over 9000 calls have been made to the state helpline number following a coronavirus scare earlier in the week.
Representative Image
Karnataka state health officials have increased screening and containment measures to prevent the spread of coronavirus in the state. Earlier on Monday, a Hyderabad based techie who had been in Bengaluru was confirmed to be positive for the infection, triggering a widespread panic in the city. According to the most recent information released by the state health department, there have been over 77,000 individuals have been screened in the state as of March 7. Around 400 samples of individuals with symptoms have been sent for testing, of which 326 have returned negative for the virus. The results of 74 samples are awaited. A major panic was triggered in Bengaluru earlier this week after a 24-year-old techie in Hyderabad who had recently been in the city was found to be positive for the virus. The man had been working in Dubai and had traveled to Bengaluru on February 20. He was in the city for a day before taking a bus to Hyderabad on February 22. Several individuals who were at risk were identified and alerted by health officials and placed under home isolation. A colleague of the techie and his flatmate who had been under scrutiny were later found to be negative for the virus. The coronavirus outbreak started in China’s Wuhan city in early December. As of March 7, over 1 lakh cases have been reported worldwide with deaths amounting to over 3900. There has been no cure or vaccine yet found for the infection. There have been 31 positive cases of coronavirus reported in India as of Saturday, including 3 individuals from Kerala who have since made full recovery. Officials have emphasized the importance of hand washing frequently throughout the day for a minimum of 20 seconds to help curb the spread and transmission of the virus. Normal masks can be worn by those who are sick, to prevent the infection from spreading to others, however masks must be disposed of properly. Those working in the healthcare sector or are at high risk of coming in contact with an infected individual have been advised to wear N95 masks, however, health experts have deemed masks to be not necessary in preventive measures.
