'Govt helped us when we didn't expect it': Wife of COVID-19 positive Bengaluru techie

Coronavirus
Meena* says that she was bombarded with calls from neighbours every day after an ambulance arrived at her house to take her husband to the hospital.
It has been a harrowing time for the family of a techie, who was tested positive for COVID-19 in Bengaluru. Meena* says that she has been praying and waiting for her husband to recover and come home. In the first week of March, Meena's husband, who had returned from abroad, isolated himself at home in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. "A day after his return, he fell sick. He had a fever and I immediately called the helpline because I was worried about my mother-in-law and son too. They both have asthma. When we called the helpline, an ambulance was sent to take my husband to the hospital. I was extremely worried. As soon as my neighbours saw the ambulance, I started receiving calls from them," she says.  Meena says she was overwhelmed by her neighbours' calls and doubly worried for her husband. "I know about coronavirus and that we have to be isolated but I was made to feel ostracised by their intrusive calls. I chose not to respond to them. In such trying times, I felt that none of them would come to help me or my family," she says.  Soon after, her husband was shifted to an isolation facility at Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Chest Diseases. "My husband had fever for over a week. The fever is gone now but he is still in isolation. He used to sleep most of the time. The hospital staff only allowed him to take his mobile phone with him. He loves reading books and he had taken a few but he was unable to read them," she says.  Meena says that all the members of her family including her son, daughter and mother-in-law immediately isolated themselves. Those delivering essential commodities were told to drop off the essentials at the gate. Her brother's family members, who were not in direct contact with her family, also isolated themselves out of caution, she says.  "My daughter is in Class 12. She was not allowed to go and write her PUC exam. She broke down and panicked that her future is over. When I contacted the Education Department, they made arrangements for her to write the exam at home. We all think that the government is not doing anything but they are working for us day and night. They are like god to me for helping me and my family in these tough times," she adds.  Meena's husband has been receiving psychological help to cope with the illness. She says that the counsellor appointed for her husband calls her every day to give her an update on her husband's condition. "The doctors and nurses are working hard too. My husband's fever peaked every day in the morning. The nurses and doctors treating him kept alarms so they would be able to attend to him without neglect. They too have been working very hard," she says.  Meena said that the IT company he works for also stood by her. The meals at RGICD include two eggs along with rice, ragi mudde, curd, rasam and a fruit rich in Vitamin E. With the family being vegetarians, the doctors there accommodated his request to have homemade food delivered to the hospital.  "My husband is used to eating homemade food. Since I could not go out, even though all of us were tested negative, I called his company. They send a car every day to my gate. I leave the boxes with food thrice a day for breakfast, lunch and dinner at the gate and the company delivers it to the gate at the hospital," she says.  Meena says that she passes her time in home quarantine by cooking and cleaning the house as the domestic worker they've employed is on paid leave. “Our home quarantine gets over on March 25. After that, we will be able to go out but we will still be under observation for 14 extra days. I am glad I had the government to support me when I did not expect it. Now that my husband does not have a fever, we are hoping that soon his daily tests come back negative, so he can come home,” she adds.  *Name changed to protect identity

Karnataka man allegedly beheads stepmom, surrenders with machete

Crime
Police say that Mahesh Gowda accused his step mother of usurping his father's property.
A man from Karnataka's Anekal, located in the outskirts of Bengaluru, was arrested on Friday for allegedly beheading his stepmother. A machete-wielding man aged 29 walked into the Anekal police station with blood stains on his shirt on Friday morning. The startled policemen detained him immediately and began questioning him. According to TOI, T Mahesh Gowda of Bidaraguppe village walked into the Anekal Police Station with a bloodied machete. His clothes were heavily stained with blood too.  Mahesh Gowda allegedly confessed to the police that he had killed his stepmother Narayanamma (60) over a property dispute. Police allegedly received calls from Mahesh Gowda's neighbours soon after he walked into the police station that Narayanamma had been murdered, Deccan Herald reported. Anekal Police say that Mahesh Gowda and his stepmother were never on good terms as his father Tatappa, had allegedly left his mother and married Narayanamma. Mahesh's mother had left the home over 10 years ago after Narayanamma and Tatappa’s wedding.  Tatappa owns two acres of land near Jigani and a dispute began over property rights as Mahesh allegedly accused Narayanamma of usurping the property and getting it registered under her name. "In his confession statement, Mahesh told us that he found out that Narayanamma was trying to sell the land, which he came to know a few weeks ago," the Anekal Police said. Mahesh Gowda allegedly filed petitions with the tahsildar's office alleging that his stepmother had got the property rights by duping his father. "When revenue officials began probing, Narayanamma and Mahesh decided to settle the dispute among themselves. Mahesh has said in his statement that he asked Narayanamma to pay him Rs 5 lakh. Narayanamma allegedly tried to negotiate and offered him Rs 1 lakh and not more. An argument broke out. He took the machete in the kitchen and beheaded her at his house on Friday morning at around 7 am," the Anekal Police added.  Mahesh's clothes and the machete have been seized and processed for evidence. He was booked under section 302 (murder) and remanded to judicial custody.

COVID-19: At Bengaluru’s KR Market, a problem of excess due to fewer customers

Coronavirus
Normal market prices prevailed at Bengaluru’s main vegetables and fruits market.
The normally buzzing KR Market in Bengaluru on Friday was functioning, albeit at a lower scale than it usually is. The Karnataka government has denied rumours on social media that KR Market, the city’s main vegetables, fruit and other perishables market, is shut  KR Market saw less stalls, and customers walked around with handkerchiefs tied across their faces. However, the vendors did not have any such precautions. Some supermarkets in the city are doing thermal screening for its customers, before allowing them in. They are also giving alcohol to customers to sanitise their hands. KR Market had no such precautionary measures. Although the market wasn’t as crowded as it normally is, customers and vendors failed to practice social distancing.  “Such things (coronavirus) don’t affect us. And we have to sell. What will we do with it (vegetables) if it rots?” asked one merchant. Many other sellers, especially in the fruit market, were faced with rotting produce, with not many buyers as there are usually. There was no question of panic buying here, instead, there was a problem of excess. There was no steep hike noticed in the market, or any drop in prices. Normal market prices prevailed. Some of the vendors in the market requested people to buy more because they wanted to get rid of stock due to low footfall, and were happy to give discounts. One seller of Hopcoms (Horticulture Producers’ Cooperative Marketing and Processing Society) fresh juice asked people visiting his stall to take some bottles of juice home.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a speech on Thursday evening had requested the country to not indulge in panic buying. In his speech, he assured the citizens of India that there is enough food in the country for all of them. The Prime Minister was forced to make this statement after reports emerged that there were people buying excess essential items in cities like Delhi and Mumbai. In his speech, he said, “Buy things as you did before. Panic buying is not right, don't do it.”

Bengaluru police bust fake hand sanitizer manufacturing racket, arrest two men

Coronavirus
The Central Crime Branch sleuths have seized 8,500 bottles of hand sanitisers that were being sold for exorbitant rates.
The Bengaluru police on Friday raided godowns in the city and arrested two men for manufacturing fake hand sanitizers and hand rubs, which are currently in huge demand in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic. The Economic Offences Wing of the Central Crime Branch seized 8,500 bottles of hand sanitizers worth Rs 56 lakh.  According to the Karnataka Health Department, the 104 helpline had received several complaints of hand sanitizers running out of stock due to high demand and many had allegedly complained that the hand sanitizers were fake. Health Department officials say they notified the city police too. However, on Friday, the CCB sleuths received a tip off that fake sanitizers were being manufactured at godowns in the city.  A team of CCB police raided godowns of Jyoti Chemcials in New Taragupet and Swati and Company in Kasturbanagar. The two arrested accused include N Raju (43), a resident of Kasturbanagar and his partner Chandan (64), who lives in Chamarajpet. The accused have currently been remanded to judicial custody.  Joint  Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil told TNM that the accused mixed anywhere between 15ml to 20 ml of cheap perfume, 15 ml to 20 ml of blue colouring agent and 50 ml of isopropyl alcohol and filled them up in 100ml, 120ml, 200 ml and 500 ml bottles.  "We also recovered hand rubs that were fake, 280 litres of isopropyl alcohol and the brilliant blue colouring agent they used for the sanitizers. We also seized 4,500 stickers. There were other materials they used for making these fake sanitizers which we seized," Sandeep Patil said. The accused sold the 100 ml bottle for Rs 170, the 200ml bottle for 325 and the 500ml bottle for 620.  "These were profiteers. The market value of one litre of isopropyl alcohol is anywhere between rs 70 to Rs 100. They were making ten times more money than what they invested,"he added.  Sandeep Patil said that the police would seize the fake sanitizers that were sold at various medical stores based on information gathered during interrogation. "We are yet to seize more of these sanitizer bottles. We will have everything under evidence by the end of the week," he said.
