Amulya Leona Noronha, the college student who was booked for sedition case for saying “Pakistan Zindabad” in a protest was granted bail, three months after she was arrested and jailed.  She was granted bail by the 5th Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate (ACMM) court under Section 167(2) of the CrPC on June 10. According to Amulya’s lawyers, the section stipulates a time period in which the charge sheet has to be filed (60-90 days), and on the 91st day, the accused is entitled to bail.  Speaking to TNM, R Prasanna, a part of the team of lawyers arguing the case, said, “Earlier, the bail that was applied for under Section 439 of the CrPC was rejected by the sessions court. So, on Wednesday, we had approached the 5th ACMM court with a different application seeking default bail under Se 167(2). Default bail was granted on Thursday. Formalities are done, we expect her to be released on Friday.” Section 439 is what is generally used to apply for bail for an accused, and it lays down the special powers of a high court or sessions court to grant bail.  The bail was granted against a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh, and on the condition that she cannot influence witnesses or obstruct investigation or commit a similar offense again.  Amulya is expected to walk out of the Parappana Agrahara jail on Friday. Earlier on Wednesday, a sessions court had rejected the bail plea of the 19-year-old student and activist saying that she “may abscond” if she is released, and “may involve [herself] in a similar offence which affects peace at large”. Amulya is a student of journalism and English. She was arrested in February after she said “Pakistan Zindabad” thrice during a protest against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and National Register of Citizens (NRC) in Bengaluru. All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) leader Asaduddin Owaisi was the chief guest at the protest. She then said “Hindustan Zindabad,” and tried to make a point, but she was not allowed to do so, the microphone was grabbed away from her and she was whisked off the stage. She was charged under Sections 153A (promoting enmity between different groups and imputations) and 153B (assertions prejudicial to national integration) of the Indian Penal Code. The Karnataka government, in its submissions in court opposing bail for Amulya, had stated that she “may threaten and influence the witnesses and hamper the case of the prosecution."

A group of unidentified thieves attempted to break in and steal from several high-end retail outlets in Bengaluru on Sunday night, police officials said. The thieves managed to steal Rs 4 lakh cash from Forest Essentials, a cosmetic store on Vittal Mallya Road. An FIR has been registered at Cubbon Park Police Station under sections 511 (Punishment for attempting to commit offences punishable with imprisonment for life or other imprisonment.), 380 (theft in dwelling, house) and 457 (lurking, house trespass or house break-in) of the Indian Penal Code. Forest Essentials is an Indian cosmetic company that specialises in ayurvedic preparations for its skincare products.  "Thieves tried to open the locks of other establishments in the area on the same night. We are investigating the case," Bharat, police inspector at Cubbon Park Police Station told TNM. The cosmetic store of Forest Essentials is located at the junction of Lavelle Road in central Bengaluru. The incident occurred some time on Sunday night and came to light on Monday.  The other establishments the thieves tried to break into include Evoluzione, a fashion store and an outlet of the popular brand Raymond, both located on Vittal Mallya Road. A break-in was also attempted at a store of Louis Phillippe, a popular brand of men's apparel, located on St. Mark's Road.  Police officials are yet to make an arrest in the case. "It is not often that there are thefts reported in this area. It is surprising that this has happened and there should be steps taken to ensure that there is patrolling," Bobita Rai, of Forest Essentials said.   While the number of criminal cases registered in Bengaluru had reduced in the last two months, incidents like the one reported on Lavelle Road took place this week. "We will be increasing vigilance in this area where there are a lot of high end shops and even some houses," Bharat told TNM.

The Karnataka government has announced that all kinds of virtual classes, including pre-recorded ones, will be stopped for students till Class 5. The Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister Suresh Kumar on Thursday confirmed to TNM that pre-recorded classes will also not be held for students upto Class 5 anymore. The decision to stop pre-recorded classes will be reviewed by a Committee.  The decision comes a day after the government banned live classes for students till Class 5, but said pre-recorded classes would be allowed.  Some private schools in Karnataka have been holding virtual lessons for students from Class 4 to 7. While live classes for students up to Class 5 were halted on Wednesday, pre-recorded classes have also been prohibited. Fee collection for all online classes has also been prohibited. A committee formed by the state education department will be issuing detailed guidelines for the regulation of 'screen time' for students. Earlier, an announcement by Law Minister JC Madhuswamy stating that online classes had been banned for students till Class 7 had created confusion. However, Education Minister Suresh Kumar later clarified that this was just advice from other ministers and that a decision is yet to be taken. He reiterated that the ban is only till Class 5. Also read: Karnataka mulls extending ban on live virtual classes up to Class 7 The state has been holding deliberations with experts and doctors on how to engage students and the modalities of both online and pre-recorded classes. It was noted that many complaints around online classes were received. Experts from Bengaluru’s NIMHANS had stated that virtual classes ideally should not be held for students up to Class 3. Citing the World Health Organisation’s recommendation, Dr BN Gangadhar had told TNM that those under 6 years of age should not have more than one hour of screen time.
