Karnataka reports 397 new coronavirus cases, crosses 10,000 mark

 Karnataka has reported 397 new coronavirus positive patients in the state on Wednesday, taking the total COVID-19 tally in the state to 10,118. Of these, 3,799 people are undergoing treatment. The maximum number of new coronavirus cases on Wednesday were reported from Bengaluru Urban district, with 173 new cases. Bengaluru has the highest number of active coronavirus cases in Karnataka at 1,124 cases. Out of the cases reported on this day, 71 were ILI (influenza like illness) patients, and two were SARI (severe acute respiratory infection) patients. 61 new patients had no known contact history. Ballari district reported 34 new cases. Ballari has been in the spotlight since a COVID-19 cluster emerged from the Jindal Steel Factory in Ballari district. Kalaburagi reported 22 new patients, as did Ramanagara district. Sharing its border with worst COVID-affected state in India – Maharashtra – Kalaburagi so has so far reported the most COVID-19 patients with 1,254 cases. However, it has only 412 now. 149 people have been discharged post-recovery. The maximum number of discharges have been from Kalaburagi district, at 50. Bengaluru Urban reported 41 discharges, Bidar, 12, and Vijayapura, 10. Fourteen people died in Karnataka due to COVID-19 on Wednesday, pegging the state’s total death toll to 164. This is the highest number of deaths reported on a single day thus far. Following the trend observed over the past few months since coronavirus cases have been reported in Karnataka, most of the COVID-19 deaths have been reported from Bengaluru, with five people succumbing to the disease on Wednesday. Two women from the city, aged 70 and 50 respectively, were taken to hospital with ILI and died on the same day they were taken to hospital - June 21. Another man aged 68, similarly passed away with ILI on the same day. Meanwhile, two women in their 50s, also ILI patients, are reported to have passed away on June 23 and June 24 respectively. This takes the death toll in Bengaluru to 78. Ballari district reported four deaths. Three of these people reported ILI, and one person reported SARI. They died on June 23 and June 24 respectively. One person, a 28-year-old man, was brought dead to the hospital on June 22. Subsequent tests confirmed that he died of the virus. Kalaburagi reported two deaths. The patients were both men, aged 78 and 55 respectively. They both reported SARI, and passed away on June 22, a day after they had been admitted to a hospital. Ramanagara has reported two deaths. Both were male patients aged 53 and 60 respectively, with diabetes. Both patients passed away on June 24, with the younger patient passing away at his home. Tumakuru reported that one death of a 56-year-old man who reported SARI. He had diabetes, hypertension, and Myasthenia. He succumbed to COVID-19 on June 23.

COVID-19: Areas near Bengaluru's KR Market and Kalasipalyam sealed off

All shops, commercial establishments, hotels, liquor stores except those selling essentials will have to shut down in the sealed areas.
The Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) decided to seal down more areas near the Sri Krishna Rajendra market – more commonly known as KR market – and Kalasipalyam market area in Bengaluru due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases. In an order issued on Wednesday, BBMP said that the area enclosed by the following places will be sealed: Town Hall Circle, JC Road, AM Road, Kalasipalyam Main Road, KR Market Junction, Service Road, Tharagupet Road (24 main road), Tipu Sultan Palace road, Tharagupet road (4 Main Road), Bhashyam Road, Srinivas Mandiram Road, Kilari Road, Anjaneya Temple Street, Sunkalpet Road, and SJP Road. Within this perimeter, all shops and establishments in the KR Market and Kalasipalyam Market will remain closed. In addition, commercial establishments of all kinds, hotels, roadside vendors, liquor shops and even local shops will have to halt operations. The flower market and religious places in the area will also be shut. The restrictions will not apply for establishments selling essential supplies like milk, newspapers, vegetables, groceries, bread products, meat, etc., along with the local fair price shops and ration shops. The exemption also applies to Secondary School Leaving Certificate (SSLC) exam centres, hospitals, medical establishments, clinics respectively. Class 10 board exams in the state are set to begin from Thursday. The areas sealed off are close to Majestic in Bengaluru, where the city's major bus and railway station are located. Loudspeakers will make announcements of the BBMP's decision for sealing down the designated areas, and pamphlets and posters will also be distributed to create awareness about physical distancing and symptoms of COVID-19.  BBMP will conduct contact tracing exercises, surveillance of ILI and SARI patients in the sealed area. The orders came on the day that Bengaluru reported 173 new coronavirus patients, bringing the total active cases in the city to 1,124. A total of 1,678 have tested coronavirus positive in the city till date. The cases reported on Wednesday included 73 patients with no contact or travel history. 71 patients had symptoms of Influenza Like Illness (ILI) while two others reported with symptoms of Severe Acute Respiratory Infection (SARI). Patients undergoing treatment in Bengaluru’s account for almost 30% of the total 3,799 active cases in Karnataka.

Mysuru officials shut down key market areas for 4 days as COVID-19 cases rise

The shutdown order will be in effect from Thursday and will extend till Sunday, a notice issued by the Mysuru City Corporation stated.
Due to the rising number of COVID-19 cases in Mysuru, the city corporation has decided to close key market areas in the city.  The MCC issued an order to close down Devaraja Market, Santhepete, Shivaramapete, Mannars Market and Boti Bazaar in the city for the next four days. The shutdown order will be in effect from Thursday and will extend till Sunday, a notice issued by the Mysuru City Corporation stated. The markets located in the city's centre are key commercial areas in Mysuru. They will be sanitised with disinfectants over the next four days. Markings will also be made in the area with paint to enforce physical distancing as people wait when the market is opened again for the public. Thermal screening, wearing of masks and use of sanitisers will be mandatory in the market area. The notice by civic officials also stated that the shops that fail to follow the guidelines laid down will be closed by the police. “If they (traders) come across customers with high temperature or signs of COVID-19 symptoms, they should inform the MCC Health Department," the notice added.  A Syndicate Bank branch office in Saraswathipuram in the city was sealed off this week after a COVID-19 case was reported among the bank's staff. The district administration in Mysuru will also increase the number of swab collection centres over the next few days.  Mysuru district has reported 189 COVID-19 patients so far, of whom 79 are still undergoing treatment. The district's administration was earlier hailed for managing the cluster of cases among workers connected to a factory of Jubilant Life Sciences, a pharmaceutical company based in Nanjangud in the district. But after 21 new cases were reported on Tuesday, civic officials in the city decided to close market areas for sanitisation. Moreover, the Karnataka government has released data showing 11,307 violations of home quarantine in Mysuru district since the start of the lockdown. On Saturday alone, 2270 violations were reported in the district.

Karnataka govt ropes in 66 private hospitals to start fever clinics in Bengaluru

The Karnataka government has ordered that certain private medical institutions will now become part of the fight against COVID-19 as fever clinics, in an order issued on Tuesday. This was done following a meeting between the heads of these institutions and the state government. According to a government order on the same, there are 66 private medical hospitals and medical colleges in Bengaluru which will extend their facilities to deal with coronavirus patients. The order has been issued under the Epidemic Diseases Act, 1897. The private medical colleges and private hospitals which are notified have been instructed to work as fever clinics. They will also function as swab collection centres for people who come to these hospitals with symptoms. Such hospitals “should do the triaging of ILI & SARI cases to find COVID-19 suspected cases, draw the swabs as per the testing policy of the state government, use the software application meant for fever clinics and swab collection centres; and make the swabs available for transportation to the labs identified by the government,” the order stated. Fever clinics offer support to people who have mild symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, dry cough, and sore throat. Fever clinics can also prescribe medicines for those patients who are not seriously ill. The order also stated that the hospital could charge a maximum of Rs 350 per sample collection from the patient. However, the bill for the COVID-19 test will be footed by the state government. The Tuesday evening bulletin noted that Bengaluru has 996 active cases of COVID-19, while a total of 1,505 people have tested positive for SARS-CoV-2 in the city.

COVID-19 patient and accused in a case spits on guard, flees Bengaluru hospital

A COVID-19 patient and an accused in a criminal case fled the Victoria Hospital in Bengaluru on Wednesday after allegedly spitting at the security guard present at the isolation facility. “The person is an accused in a criminal case and was admitted yesterday (Tuesday) evening. Today he spat on our security staff and ran away,” Dr Asima Banu. COVID-19 nodal officer at Victoria Hospital told TNM. Deputy Commissioner of Police, Bengaluru South Rohini Sepat Katoch also confirmed the incident. She said police are working to nab the accused and a First Information Report has also been registered. “The man is a 30-year-old and had tested positive for the coronavirus on Tuesday and got admitted. He was arrested initially by DJ Halli police in connection with an assault case. Today he spat at the security staff in the hospital and ran away,” the DCP told TNM. The officer refused to share further information in connection with the development. SInce the onset of the pandemic, there have been reports of many patients who were kept in isolation wards or quarantine facilities trying to flee. This may be the first case of a patient fleeing a treatment facility in the state. Corporator Imran Pasha, who had tested positive for the coronavirus, was arrested on June 7 following his recovery from COVID-19 as he led a celebratory march to his home from the hospital. He was seen waving at a group of supporters who circled his car in a busy road and were also seen bursting crackers. SImilarly on the way to the hospital, his supporters had gathered around the ambulance and he was seen waving at them. Videos of both the incident went viral on social and instant messaging platforms.
