‘Have beds and equipment but no doctors’: Bengaluru doctor makes fervent appeal on video

Coronavirus
There is a need for MBBS graduates who can work as duty doctors and intensivists for intensive care.
doctor at hbs hopsital seeking other doctors to join duty
Screengrab
A video of a Bengaluru doctor making a passionate appeal to fellow doctors to join him and his colleague to treat COVID-19 patients at the HBS hospital in Shivajinagar has started doing the rounds on social media and messaging platforms.  The caption of the video says, “‘Doctors and Nursing Staff required IMMEDIATELY Contact Dr Shariq.” The hospital told TNM on Sunday evening that they need 48 doctors, and after the video was published, they received calls from around 5-6 doctors. Doctors and nurses can call Umer, a corodinator for the exercise, at 9901699144.  “I speak from the ICU of HBS Hospital. It’s been a virtual bloodbath. I came in the morning at like 7:30 in the morning and its 12’o’clock midnight right now. Patients are continuously calling me now ‘cause their fathers are breathless, their brothers are breathless and they cannot find a room in Bengaluru and at this time if you see there is one Mr Shiva and me. There is no other doctor willing to work in this hospital. I have beds, I have oxygen beds, I have ventilators, I have all the equipment. I have another 30 beds like this but I don’t have doctors working here. I find them on WhatsApp. I need 6 hours of your time in a day. Please this is my fervent request. This is the time to show we care. Sometimes the army is in the frontline, sometimes the fire people are in the frontline, sometimes the police is in the frontline. Right now, you and I, my fellow doctors, are in the frontline, let us show that we care for humanity,” says Dr Taha Mateen in the moving video, his hands folded. Pointing at the patients being treated, he says, “This is somebody’s mother, this is somebody’s brother and this is somebody’s dad. Are we gonna stand up and let us show we care. Does not matter how long we live and how we live? Let us be afraid of our creator and work for this moment as true believers. Let us work, thank you very much.”  At present, a few instances have been reported from Bengaluru of COVID-19 patients or patients with symptoms dying in want of treatment as either their family could not arrange for a bed or hospitals—government or private. According to figures, released by the state government as of Saturday, 7250 persons in Bengaluru have COVID-19 and many are actively being treated for the disease leading to a crisis. Speaking to TNM, Dr Mehdi Kaleem, Mercy Angels, an organisation of volunteers, workin closely with the HBS hospital, said, “We are looking for duty doctors, they can be just MBBS graduates or specialist doctors (intensivists) with experience in intensive care (IC). We are looking for doctors here who can incubate people to the ventilators for the intensivists. We are also trying to scale up other facilities as well and for that we need a lot of these doctors. Today we are in a situation where we are not getting doctors even though we are trying out to reach as much as we can. We are trying to look for doctors who are working both in the public and private set up."

Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre converted into 10,000-bed COVID facility

Coronavirus
BIEC is set to be the largest COVID-Care Centre in Karnataka and will house COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms.
A massive COVID-Care Centre with over 10,000 beds is set to be opened at the Bengaluru International Exhibition Centre (BIEC) in the city. It is set to be the largest COVID-Care Centre in Karnataka and will house COVID-19 patients who are asymptomatic or have mild symptoms. BIEC, a sprawling venue on the outskirts of Bengaluru city, was earlier the space used by authorities to shelter migrant workers looking to leave the city for their homes after the lockdown over the coronavirus outbreak was imposed. On Sunday, Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Commissioner BH Anil Kumar visited the centre along with BJP MLA SR Vishwanath to inspect the facility. "The centre is well-ventilated, has an adequate number of toilets, nursing stations, kitchens and other required facilities," Anil Kumar stated. Karnataka government officials are dealing with a surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru. As of July 5, the city has recorded 8,345 COVID-19 cases of which 7,250 are currently active. Bengaluru reported 1,172 COVID-19 cases on Saturday. Due to the sharp spike in cases in Bengaluru in the past week, civic officials in the city have started converting indoor stadiums and ashrams into COVID-Care Centres. Officials also released a list of 16 government hospitals and 73 private hospitals where COVID-19 patients will be admitted.  In multiple incidents, residents in the city struggled to find hospitals willing to admit patients with COVID-19 or breathing issues, prompting officials to announce that the BESCOM's 1912 helpline number can now be used to inform grievances about hospitals denying patients beds.  In one incident reported in the city, a 65-year-old man, who tested positive for the novel coronavirus on Friday, collapsed and died on the road outside his house while he was waiting for an ambulance to arrive. BBMP Commissioner Anil Kumar apologised to the victim's family for the incident after the ambulance did not arrive for over 3 hours.  Read: Dial 1912 if a Bengaluru hospital denies bed for COVID-19 patient

A year after VG Siddhartha's death, officials begin construction of fence on Netravati Bridge

Infrastructure
The fence will be constructed for up to 800 metres on either side of the bridge at a cost of Rs 50 lakh.
Netravati Bridge, Mangaluru
Almost a year after Cafe Coffee Day (CCD) founder VG Siddhartha took his life by jumping from the Netravati Bridge into the river in Mangaluru, authorities have begun work on constructing a 'fencing barrier'. The construction work began on Saturday after Mangaluru South MLA Vedavyas laid the foundation stone for the fencing work.  Soon after the incident involving VG Siddhartha in July 2018, residents demanded CCTV cameras, police patrolling in the area, and fencing work to be taken up. It was only this year the city authorities set the plan in motion. Mangaluru MLA UT Khader had written a letter to Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari seeking an increase in the height of the railings along the bridge and installation of CCTV cameras. “The 900-m-long bridge across the Netravati, near the river mouth, has become a spot for people to end their lives. It was distressing and disheartening to see the loss of lives of several persons, including that of Siddhartha,” he had written in the letter.  The fence will be constructed for up to 800 metres on either side of the bridge at a cost of Rs 50 lakh, allotted by the Mangalore Urban Development Authority (MUDA). The bridge en-route National Highway (NH)-66 connecting Kerala and Karnataka has seen similar incidents earlier. It gained notoriety in 2019 after the 60-year-old business tycoon allegedly ended his life on July 29 last year. After Siddhartha’s death, over a dozen such similar incidents followed.  Mohammed (35), a fisherman in the area near the bridge has been responding to rescue calls for over 20 years now. He says that there were as many as seven incidents since the lockdown was put in place over the coronavirus outbreak. In one such incident, Mohammed along with six other fishermen, managed to rescue a local resident named Nishant who jumped into the river on May 25. However, Nishant succumbed in the government hospital in Bantwal.  Read: Muslim men rescue man from Netravati river, their attempt portrayed as communal violence Following this incident, a 28-year-old man sent police officails in Mangaluru into a tizzy after he went missing leaving behind his bike and belongings on the Netravathi Bridge on June 8. However, two days later the man resurfaced in Shivamogga and informed officials that he abandoned the idea of jumping into the river after reconsidering his decision to end his life.
