Bengaluru aims to open two more COVID-19 maternity clinics

Coronavirus
At present, only a 24-bed BBMP Maternity Clinic in Wilson Garden is running for pregnant COVID-19 patients other than Victoria Hospital facilities

In the wake of a major rise in COVID-19 cases in Bengaluru, and with many women due for delivery struggling to find a hospital bed in the city, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike said it will expand exclusive facilities for symptomatic and corona-positive patients who are pregnant. At present only a 24-bed BBMP Maternity Clinic in Wilson Garden is running for pregnant COVID-19 patients and patients with COVID-19 symptoms. Other than this, the state government-run Vani Vilas Hospital within the Victoria Hospital premises, and the hospital’s Trauma Care Centre, were seeing these patients. However, Victoria Hospital is catering to all COVID-19 patients, and not just pregnant women.  With the continued increase in cases, these facilities are saturated and many economically disadvantaged families are forced to spend exorbitant amounts even for normal deliveries at private facilities. Read: BBMP turns Bengaluru hospital into dedicated maternity centre amid spike in COVID-19 “We have asked for manpower from the state government due to the increase in cases we are getting every day. At present, Wilson Garden is the only designated COVID-19 maternity facility. This is a 24-bed facility. Until very recently, we had been referring coronavirus positive pregnant women to Victoria Hospital but they are also running out of beds. For that reason we have asked state Health and Family Welfare Commissioner to give us manpower so that we can start a similar facility in Austin Town Maternity Home, and Palace Guttahalli Maternity Home,” Dr Niramla Buggi, Chief Health Officer, BBMP (Clinical) told TNM. She said the Austin Town facility will have 24 beds while the Palace Guttahalli one will have 12 beds.  She further said with the rapid antigen tests available it has been easier to detect patients with the infection while earlier many patients had to deliver their child without being tested or with their test results due.  “There have been times when we came to know about their positivity post-delivery. Till date, there have been at least 25 such cases. So in order to minimise such complications we want to have designated COVID-19 maternity clinics so that there is a minimum chance of our doctors and staff getting infected,” she added.  TNM had reported on July 5 about a pregnant woman who was due to deliver in a few hours’ time, and was allegedly thrown out of a private facility as she turned out to be corona positive. Her family’s efforts to get a bed in a government facility also failed and she eventually delivered at another private facility which came at an expense of close to Rs 1 lakh.

In a shocking incident from Karnataka, a viral video shows pigs roaming around freely within a designated COVID-19 hospital in Kalaburagi. The video shows a group of pigs walking through the corridors of the district hospital as staff of the hospital can be seen in the same frame, going about their work as if there was nothing unusual.  Soon after the video went viral, the Deputy Commissioner of Kalaburagi, Sharat B, visited the hospital on Saturday and ensured that the pigs were captured and directed local police to register a case against the owner of the pigs. TNM could not reach either the DC or the district health officer for a comment. Tweeting on this, state Health Minister B Sriramulu acknowledged the incident on Saturday night. He said as soon as he came to know about the incident, he alerted the hospital authorities to take action.  He added that the pigs’ owners will be pulled up and all the pigs in the vicinity of the hospital were also captured. He said that the hospital authority has been advised to stay cautious about this issue in future. 1/2 — B Sriramulu (@sriramulubjp) July 18, 2020 According to latest data as of Saturday evening, Kalaburagi has a total of 940 COVID-19 patients undergoing treatment and has seen a total of 43 deaths. Reacting to the incident, Congress leader and party’s national coordinator for social media Lavanya Ballal said, “Under Sriramulu, the state COVID-19 management has literally gone to the pigs. If you want to be saved, only garlic and god can save you now.” Recently Health Minister B Sriramulu had stirred a controversy when he said that “Only god can now save us” referring to the alarming rise of COVID-19 cases in the state. He later clarified that the state government is doing its best to contain the spread of the virus. Incidentally, Kalaburagi was the district to report the first COVID-19 death of the country.

Bengaluru resident group rents exclusive ambulance amidst news of shortage

Coronavirus
Community members say the decision was prompted by incidents where patients in the neighbourhood had to wait for hours for an ambulance to reach their doorstep.
Kanakapuram residents pose outside ambulance
Worried about not getting an ambulance when needed during the COVID-19 crisis, a confederation of resident welfare associations (RWAs) in Bengaluru, under Change Makers of Kanakapura, has rented an ambulance for their exclusive use for the next six months. Speaking with TNM, Abdul Aleem, one of the members of the community, said that the decision was taken after a resident in the neighbourhood died following a heart attack due to the late arrival of the ambulance about a month ago. In another incident, which also contributed to the community’s decision, a man who suffered a heart attack and was facing breathing difficulties was denied ambulance service fearing he had COVID-19. Later the family had to take him to the hospital in their personal vehicle. Both of these incidents involved private hospitals. “We’ve started this service for ourselves from Friday, it’s like insurance for us. We have all the required facilities like oxygen and ventilator support. We also have five sets of personal protective equipment (PPEs), and once a patient avails the ambulance service, we’ll replace them with new ones. All of this comes to Rs 60 per family for a month,” Abdul said. Along with two ambulance drivers, the 3,700-family strong community has also hired three intensive care unit trained nurses who will work in shifts. The federation comprises mostly residents of apartment complexes on the Kanakapura Road starting from Sarakki Signal to the NICE road junction. It may be recalled that many patients had to wait long hours as the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike officials were struggling to transport patients to designated hospitals after they tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Even in a meeting convened by Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Friday, the CM directed officials to ensure the arrival of ambulance to the doorstep of the infected persons within two hours of being tested positive. Earlier on Thursday, a man protested outside the CM’s house after being unable to arrange an ambulance for his family. It was only after the CMO staff made arrangements that he could shift his kin to the hospital.
