A social worker and former leader of the Samajwadi Party was arrested on Friday for allegedly announcing a bounty on the head of Pulakeshinagar Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy’s nephew P Naveen.  Media reports stated that the Shahazeb Rizvi, a resident of Rasoolpur village in Phalwada town of Meerut, had circulated a video on WhatsApp, where he purportedly announced a bounty of Rs 51 lakh on the head of P Naveen for putting up the Facebook comment, which hurt religious sentiments. He was arrested after the video went viral.  “The sentiments of the Muslim community have been hurt due to the social media post of Congress MLA’s nephew. Whoever will get me the head of his nephew, will get Rs 51 lakh in return. The money will be collected with the help of the people who support me in the cause,” Rizvi can be heard saying in the video, according to the Times of India (ToI). According to The Hindu, Avinash Pandey, Superintendent of Police (Rural), Meerut, told the media that Shahazeb Rizvi was booked under sections 153 A (promoting enmity between religious groups) and 505 (2) (intent to incite one community against the other) of the Indian Penal Code.  ToI reported that Rizvi could be heard making an appeal to people for contributing to the bounty money. The report stated that Shahazeb Rizvi was formerly associated with the minority cell of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and also contested the zilla panchayat elections on an SP ticket.  The National Commission for Scheduled Castes has written to the Meerut police that the sections invoked against Shahazb Rizvi were weak and has demanded that he also be booked under relevant sections of the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989.  The violence in Bengaluru allegedly began after P Naveen, nephew of Congress MLA Akhanda Srinivas Murthy, put up a comment on Facebook that was derogatory towards Prophet Muhammed. Huge mobs gathered at DJ Halli and KG Halli and vandalised the police stations. The under-construction building adjacent to Srinivas Murthy’s residence was set on fire and Naveen’s home was also vandalised. The Bengaluru police have so far arrested 206 people in connection with the riot, including the husband of BBMP corporator from Nagawara, Kaleem Pasha.

Bengaluru violence: BBMP corporator’s husband arrested for allegedly instigating mob

Crime
Kaleem Pasha, husband of Nagawara corporator, was arrested on Friday.
The Bengaluru police have arrested 60 more people in connection with the violence that broke out on Tuesday night, including the husband of BBMP corporator from Nagawara, Kaleem Pasha. In a midnight operation on Friday, the police arrested Kaleem Pasha for allegedly instigating the mob gathered outside the Kadugondanahalli (KG Halli) Police Station on the evening of August 11.  According to Sandeep Patil, Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime), Kaleem Pasha allegedly visited KG Halli Police Station on Tuesday evening, before the violence broke out and allegedly instigated the mob to resort to violence. However, he allegedly left the spot as soon as protesters began pelting stones at the police station.  Police said that Kaleem Pasha allegedly returned to KG Halli Police Station at midnight on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday, and allegedly “pretended to help the police diffuse the situation.” “He wanted to ensure that he would not be held responsible for instigating the mob. He also told the KG Halli police the names of some of the people who were present during the vandalism,” a senior police officer with the Central Crime Branch said.  According to Deccan Herald, Kaleem Pasha is listed as accused number 7 in the FIR registered on Wednesday night. Police said that Kaleem Pasha’s role was allegedly revealed after perusing through the 40 cellphones that were seized in connection with the incident, in addition to the interrogation of SDPI member Firoz.  Sandeep Patil said that 81 suspects, who were arrested, were sent to judicial custody to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison and were later moved to Ballari Central Prison.  Bommai says political differences caused the riots Speaking to the media on Friday after the meeting with Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Karnataka Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said that political differences within the Congress party and the “larger conspiracy of the Social Democratic Party of India” were the reasons for Tuesday’s riots.  “We have learnt so far that it is the political differences within the Congress. We have also learnt in the investigation that the Congress’ differences with the SDPI and the SDPI’s larger conspiracy to disrupt law and order, in relation to the previous elections and the upcoming (BBMP) elections, played a role in the violence,” Basavaraj Bommai said.

Karnataka man kidnaps woman in broad daylight for refusing marriage, caught on CCTV

Crime
While the police have rescued the woman, the accused escaped during the chase.
Shilpa* was walking down the road on Thursday with her friend on what seemed like a usual day. However, everything changed within a split second when a white Innova stopped beside her, a man stepped out, lifted Shilpa up and forced her into the car. Her horrified friend tried to stop them, even as Shilpa can be seen struggling as she is pushed into the car. However, the car sped away even before the gate through which she was forced in was closed. This terrifying kidnapping happened in Kolar in Karnataka in broad daylight around 11.30 am and was caught on CCTV camera. Shilpa was kidnapped by a group of three men – Shivshankar, Balaji and Deepak. Shivshankar allegedly masterminded the crime because Shilpa had turned down his proposal for marriage. The incident alarmed passers-by, who immediately alerted the police.  Kolar Superintendent of Police Karthik Reddy told TNM that the woman was kidnapped and then confined to a lodge in Tumakuru district where Shivshankar attempted to convince her to marry him. However, Shilpa managed to intimate her family members on Friday about her whereabouts. Kolar police, in a joint operation with Tumakuru police, tracked down the kidnappers on Friday morning. Around 10 am, the police found that the kidnappers had abandoned their car and had taken off on foot close to Akkathangi kere which is near Hanumanthapura bridge in Tumakuru. "Around 10 am, we tracked the kidnappers after we chased them on foot. While the woman was rescued and is being brought back to Kolar, the kidnappers escaped," Karthik Reddy said. Shilpa returned to Kolar on Friday evening and was reunited with her family. Police officials said that they will continue their search for the accused persons.  *Not her real name
