Crime
Party planner Viren Khanna and another accused Ravi Shankar have been remanded to police custody.
Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjana Galrani
The 1st Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate on Monday remanded six accused in the Bengaluru drug case to judicial custody including actors Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjjana Galrani. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep patil said that the accused would be in judicial custody till September 16, which is the day of the bail hearing.  According to the CCB, Ragini Dwivedi, Sanjjana Galrani, Loum Pepper, Rahul Tonse and Niyaz, were produced before the magistrate via video conference. The CCB alleged that the accused were a flight risk and could also tamper with evidence when they were produced before the magistrate.  Actor Ragini's counsel told the court that she needs to be given special medical attention due to a slip disk issue. The court has instructed the officials to provide the necessary medical aid, police said. The accused will be shifted to Parappana Agrahara Central Prison in Bengaluru.  The court, however, remanded party planner Viren Khanna and Ravi Shankar to four-day police custody. “The actors will be shifted to the women's cell. We are waiting for the written court order so we can transfer them to jail,” the CCB official said.  Ragini Dwivedi was arrested on September 4 after her friend Ravi Shankar was held by the CCB for allegedly procuring and distributing drugs. Soon after, Rahul Tonse, a close friend of Sanjana, was also arrested. Police say that based on Rahul’s statement, Sanjana Galrani was arrested on September 8.  The police arrested Viren Khanna on September 4. He was accused of organising parties, inviting these actors and also procuring drugs for those who attended these parties.  Loum Pepper, a Senagalese national was arrested on September 5. The CCB sleuths suspect that Viren Khanna bought drugs from Loum Pepper. The CCB also found 10 gm of MDMA at Loum Pepper’s residence.  The accused have been booked for criminal conspiracy and under various sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act. CCB sources say that the probe into alleged drug trafficking in the Kannada film industry had begun weeks before the arrests were made. Police are relying heavily on digital evidence allegedly found on the phones of the accused persons.

Nandi Hills
The popular tourist site in Karnataka, Nandi Hills, opened for tourists for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic on September 7, and in the first week, the site saw around 15,000 people visiting the site. Authorities tell TNM that masks have been made compulsory for all visitors and people have been advised against gathering on the hills. Nandi Hills was reopened for visitors on September 7 as a part of the Unlock 4.0 guidelines.Currently, the site is open to visitors from 8 am to 5 pm. According to Special Officer, Gopal, the number of visitors coming to the hills are expected to rise over the next few weekends.  “We are expecting to see an increase in the number of visitors from next weekend. There are no restrictions regarding the number of people allowed to visit the hills but masks have been made mandatory and visitors have been advised to avoid crowding on the hills,” he told TNM. Meanwhile, the staff members at the sites have also been advised to follow precautions. “While on duty, the staff have been instructed to wear face shields and face masks as precautionary measures,” Gopal said.  He added that police personnel and home guards have been deployed to keep an eye on the visitors and ensure that the physical distancing norms are being adhered to. He also said that the number of policemen and home guards are stepped during weekends to deal with the increased number of visitors.  “We have partnered with NGOs and we are using their volunteers to monitor visitors and ensure that everyone is following the precautions prescribed,” said the special officer. Currently, the hills for a shorter time than the regular timings of 6 am to 6 pm.  “As of now, the hills are open from 8 am to 5 pm instead of the regular timings. It is too early to say when we will go back to implementing the original timing,” said Gopal.  The sunrise at Nandi Hills is one of the main attractions at the spot and several people often visit Nandi Hills to catch a glimpse of sunrise. However, the revised timings do not give them the luxury to do so anymore.  Set in Chikkaballapur, Nandi Hills, also known as Nandi Durga, is one of the popular tourist destinations in Karnataka, known for its greenery and valley views. Bengaluru businessman's allegations on drug case earns him defamation case

Drugs case
From alleging that many in the film industry and politics have connections with drug mafia, Prashanth Sambargi has been on TV almost every day with his claims.

By Arrangement
As allegations in the Bengaluru drug case are being probed by the CCB police, a businessman Prashanth Sambargi has been seen on multiple panel discussions on several Kannada news channels. From alleging that many in the film industry and politics have connections with drug mafia, Prashanth Sambargi has been on TV almost every day with his claims.   While many were wondering what really was his expertise to appear as a panelist, he made a claim on a channel that many politicians who had been to Sri Lanka, had actually gone to the island nation with big names from the Kannada film industry to attend rave parties. And immediately, Prasanth became a fixture on most channels, and has made several allegations about others in the past few days.   Prasanth's initial appearances on TV and his own social media posts were all vague allegations without taking names. He said that 'Sandalwood is floating in sin money', and that Bollywood and Sandalwaood were working together to further drug trade. He also said that a big name in Sandalwood made several stars addicted to gambling.   Prashanth’s direct allegation was against the former Karnataka minister and Congress leader Zameer Ahmed. Prashanth, a realtor-turned film distributor with several other business interests including a dubbing studio, alleged that Zameer was a close acquaintance of actor Sanjana Galrani, a claim that Zameer has vehemently denied. Prashanth claimed that Zameer and Sanjana, who is currently in custody, had attended an event in Colombo in a casino along with a common acquaintance, Shaikh Faizulla. ‘As of now, I am only alleging that Zameer Ahmed was present in the said casino in Colombo between June 8 and 10, 2019. Once he accepts it, I will reveal more incrimination information about him,’ Prashanth told TNM.   Taking note of his statements to the media, the CCB police served him with a notice, asking him to appear before them with any evidence he has in the case. Even as he was enroute to the CCB headquarters, Prashanth, speaking to news channels made claims of how he will present documents to the police which will decisively show the role of Zameer Ahmed, a claim that the CCB have not been enthusiastic about.    ‘I have given the police a video which supports my claims. I have also given them pictures of Zameer Ahmed with Shaikh Faizulla from as recently as four months ago, busting his lie that he has not met him for at least four years. Shaikh is being investigated by the police for his role in drug smuggling and is currently absconding,’ says Prashanth. But sources in the CCB police told TNM that the ‘evidence’ presented by Prashanth Sambargi was already in the public domain and added little value to the investigation. The police have asked him to collect tangible evidence that could possibly support his claims and appear before them again in a week’s time.   Meanwhile, Zameer Ahmed has filed a police complaint against Prashanth for making unsubstantiated allegations against him. The FIR filed by the police has IPC sections 120B (criminal conspiracy),463 and 465 (forgery), 504 (intentional insult) and 506 (criminal intimidation) pressed against him.   Many in the film industry have accused Prashanth of using the ongoing controversy to settle scores with those in the fraternity by making defamatory allegations in the media. When TNM asked him about this, he claimed that he has already settled scores with them all through a legal recourse.   Read: Pro-Kannada group vandalises Hindi signboard in Bengaluru, posts video online

Pro-Kannada group vandalises Hindi signboard in Bengaluru, posts video online

Protest
Activists vandalised the signboard at the KSR Railway Station in Bengaluru, while raising slogans against Hindi imposition.
Pro-Kannada activists vandalised a board at the Krantivira Sangolli Rayanna (KSR) Railway Station in Bengaluru during a protest against Hindi imposition on Monday, September 14; a day celebrated as ‘Hindi Divas’. Activists belonging to Karunaada Sevakaru, a pro-Kannada group, took out a march and subsequently vandalised the board of the railway station in the centre of the city.  The activists had earlier stated that they will push the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) for strict enforcement of the rule of having 60% of all signboards in Kannada. The members of the group, wearing black shirts and yellow-red scarves, turned up at the railway station before proceeding to remove the letters on the signboard at the station. The act was filmed by members of the group themselves and streamed live on social media on the Facebook page of Karunaada Sevakaru The signboard which read - KSR Bengaluru Station - was written in three languages - English, Hindi and Kannada. The activists vandalised the Hindi board, while leaving the Kannada and English ones intact.  Another protest held by pro-Kannada activists of the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike at the Gandhi statue in Anand Rao circle passed off peacefully. Prominent actors and politicians including Prakash Raj and HD Kumaraswamy had spoken out against Hindi imposition on Monday calling for people to voice their opinion on the issue.  An online campaign was organised by pro-Kannada activists using the hashtag #ServeInMyLanguage to canvas support for regional languages. Actors Chethan, Dhananjaya and Janata Dal (Secular) leaders Prajwal Revanna and Nikhil Kumaraswamy were among the people posting about the need for upholding regional languages on Monday.

‘Hindi Gothilla’: Politicians, celebrities support online campaign in Karnataka

Controversy
“Hindi and English should be taught as languages but should not be forced as a medium of instruction,” actor turned politician Prakash Raj told TNM.
Chethan and Prakash Raj
On September 14, which is celebrated as Hindi Day, a group of celebrities and actors sported T-shirts with messages that read ‘Hindi Gothilla’ (I don’t know Hindi) and ‘Nange Hindi Baralla, Hograppa’ (I don’t understand Hindi, go ahead) to voice their support against Hindi imposition. Actors Prakash Raj, Chethan and Dhananjaya were among those who took to social media with T-shirts that was reminiscent of a similar campaign in Tamil Nadu.  The campaign in Tamil Nadu, which was kickstarted by Thoothukudi’s DMK MP Kanimozhi, received a wave of support on social media and the neighbouring state of Karnataka. T-shirts as part  of this campaign had slogans such as “Hindi theriyathu, poda!” (I don’t know Hindi, go man!), “I am a Tamizh Pesum Indian” (I am a Tamil speaking Indian) and “I am Indian, I don’t speak Hindi”.   “Kanimozhi started it with the T-shirts and it was good. We are encouraging more people to come forward and use their platforms to voice this issue. It is good that more people are coming forward to highlight the issue this year,” actor Prakash Raj said in a conversation with TNM.  Prakash Raj, an actor who speaks and acts in multiple languages, said that Hindi should not be enforced as a medium of instruction. “Hindi and English should be taught as languages but should not be forced as a medium of instruction. I know many languages but my learning and perception of the world is strongest in my mother tongue,” he said. ನನ್ನ ಮಾತೃಭಾಷೆ ಕನ್ನಡ #ಹಿಂದಿ_ಹೇರಿಕೆ_ಬೇಡ ..NO #HindiImposition #justasking pic.twitter.com/B8RWHt8dVC — Prakash Raj (@prakashraaj) September 13, 2020 The social media campaign not only coincides with Hindi Day but also comes at a time when the National Education Policy (NEP) mentioned the three-language formula and the translation of the draft Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) notification was done in Hindi but not other languages.  Earlier, in September, the Union government told the Delhi High Court that it objected to publishing the draft EIA in languages other than Hindi and English, stating that doing so would lead to “translation and interpretation issues”, resulting in the “obfuscation” of the words used in the draft. The Ministry of Environment also contended that the law does not require notifications to be published in local languages.  Other concerns highlighted by ‘anti-Hindi imposition’ activists include the use of only Hindi and English in services like banking and examinations for government jobs. Recently, a resident of Tarikere in Karnataka’s Chikkamagaluru district had highlighted how the local branch of the State Bank of India had stopped using Kannada.  My father is a farmer studied till 10th standard who has been transacting with SBI, Tarikere for over decades. Suddenly kannada disappears from bank usage. No body notified, how the hell they expect that 73 year old man to learn a new language to avail basic services like banking https://t.co/pY831USP2F — Prasanna (@prasannaaz1) September 2, 2020 “Consider simple daily-life acts like going to a bank or getting a gas cylinder. What will someone in a rural part of Karnataka do if he has to deal with officials in English or Hindi? He or she might be someone who does not converse in either language in his hometown. Why should they learn it? This will lead to the demise of regional languages,” Prakash Raj said.  He also highlighted the diversity of India’s languages and culture and questioned the need for a common language in all states. Comparing the language diversity to the diversity in Indian cuisines, Prakash Raj said, “Consider the cuisine in Karwar, Mangaluru and Thiruvananthapuram. They are towns on the same coastline of the Arabian sea but the dishes you find in each of these places are unique. Can these unique dishes all be cooked in the way they are by adding the same masala?”.   Prakash Raj unsuccessfully contested in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections as an independent candidate from the Bengaluru (Central) constituency. Pro-Kannada activists said there was a swell of support for the campaign this year compared to previous years. “The support has increased this year because there are more people voluntarily coming forward to voice their opinions about how regional languages are sidelined in favour of Hindi,” Arun Javagal, an activist from the Kannada Grahakara Koota, a pro-Kannada organisation, said.  Activists shared a slew of social media posts with the hashtag #Serveinmylanguage to show their support for regional languages. Last week, Chakravarthy Sulibele, a columnist and the founder of the ‘NamoBrigade’, a youth organisation that canvassed for Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Lok Sabha elections, also questioned why the translations of the draft EIA notification were not done in regional languages. “If you have no problem translating it into Hindi, then definitely you shouldn’t have a problem translating in Kannada, too. We have more number of original words in Kannada than Hindi,” Chakravarthy Sulibele said in a tweet. If you have no problem translating it into Hindi then definitely you shouldn’t have problem translating in Kannada too. We have more number if original words in Kannada than Hindi. @narendramodi ji this is unacceptable. Please look into it. pic.twitter.com/GQOFZ8xsS7 — Chakravarty Sulibele (@astitvam) September 7, 2020 Politicians in Karnataka, including Congress leader Dinesh Gundu Rao and former Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy, have also spoken out against ‘Hindi imposition’. In a series of 10 tweets, Kumaraswamy said, “In India, which has a diverse culture, Hindi is being forced upon Kannadigas and speakers of other languages. Today’s Hindi Day is also such a misdemeanour. There is a strong opposition of from the self-respecting Kannadiga to Hindi Day.” — Dinesh Gundu Rao/ದಿನೇಶ್ ಗುಂಡೂರಾವ್ (@dineshgrao) September 13, 2020 Pro-Kannada activists from various organisations also held a protest over the issue in front of the Mahatma Gandhi statue in Bengaluru’s Anand Rao Circle. While this protest organised by the Karnataka Rakshana Vedike passed off without incident, another protest by members of 'Karunadu Sevakaru', another pro-Kannada group, vandalised a signboard at the KSR Railway station in Bengaluru.
