A second fact-finding committee on the violent mob attacks in eastern Bengaluru on August 11 found that there is a lack of substantial evidence to call the incident communal and stated that the police failed to act expeditiously when they were approached with a complaint. The report was prepared by a team of members from civil society organisations in Bengaluru including Nina Nayak, former chairperson of the Karnataka State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, independent journalist Cynthia Stephen and 21 others. "There is a lack of substantial evidence to suggest that the mob  violence was communal in  nature, in that it specifically targeted the Hindu community or that it was premeditated and pre-planned," stated the report.  Earlier this month, a fact finding committee released a report on the violent incidents in eastern Bengaluru terming it a communal attack on Hindu residents in the area. The report released on September 4 was compiled by ‘Citizens for Democracy', a committee appointed by the state government, Tourism Minister CT Ravi said. The address of the committee mentioned in the report is the address of 'Vikrama Weekly', a magazine affiliated to the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS). Read: Fact-finding committee on Bengaluru riots was appointed by state govt: Minister CT Ravi The report released on Wednesday stated that the rioters in the violent incidents did not specifically target Hindu residences. "It  is accepted  by  various groups that Muslim youth  assisted in the protection of Hindu and Christian  families and the homes and vehicles  of  Hindus. They formed human chains outside the Hanuman temple as also the police station to keep away the mob. In Kaval Byrasandra, a property belonging to a Muslim was vandalised  and damaged while vehicles of Muslims were also burnt regarding which they have filed police complaints," stated the report.  However, it added that, "While some individuals and houses of Hindus were randomly targeted, it was felt that this moment was used to seek personal vendetta on some families and not communal in nature. Many Hindu families whose houses were vandalised shared tha it  was  the local  Muslim families who also helped protect their property." The report also highlighted that police inaction led to the crowds swelling and the subsequent mob attacks. "Not only did the police fail to act expeditiously and effectively on the post when  small delegations approached the police station, but they also failed to intervene in effective ways in preventing the violence from escalating in DJ Halli, KG Halli and Kaval Byrasandra," stated the report.  Violent mob attacks occurred in DJ Halli and KG Halli in eastern Bengaluru on the night of August 11 after a mob of local residents gathered in response to a Facebook post termed derogatory by Muslims. The post was uploaded by Naveen P, nephew of Congress MLA R Akhanda Srinivas Murthy. The mob was angered by the police's inaction over a complaint against Naveen's post and launched attacks on two police stations - in DJ Halli and KG Halli - and the MLA's residence in Kaval Byrasandra. The attacks began at 9.30 pm on August 11 and the situation was brought under control in the early hours of August 12 by police which opened fire against the mob, killing three people.  Muzzammil Pasha, an SDPI leader from Bengaluru, had approached the DJ Halli police station with a complaint against Naveen at 7.45 pm on August 11. He is now among hundreds of people arrested in connection with the violence while many have been charged under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Read: How two police stations in Bengaluru became targets of mob violence on Tuesday night     The report released on Wednesday called for the charges under the UAPA to be withdrawn. "There must be an enquiry conducted into the arrest of persons, to ensure that  all innocent persons are immediately released. The families of the accused persons must be informed  regarding the cases against them and their whereabouts," read the report.

Sandalwood drug case: Bengaluru police question Diganth and Aindrita Ray

Crime
The couple was summoned for questioning after two accused persons allegedly revealed their names during investigation.
Sandalwood actors Diganth Manchale and Aindrita Ray on Wednesday arrived at the Central Crime Branch office in Bengauru's Chamarajpet for questioning in connection with the alleged drug trafficking case. The couple arrived at the CCB office at around noon.  The CCB issued the real-life couple a notice on Tuesday after two of the persons accused of peddling drugs in the case allegedly revealed their names during interrogation. CCB sources said that they allegedly found pictures of the couple attending parties that other accused persons Ragini Dwivedi and Sanjjana Galrani had also attended.  CCB sources said that the couple would be questioned about their links to other accused in the case, including Viren Khanna, Aditya Alva, Rahul Tonse and Ravi Shankar. Police said that they found digital evidence that Diganth and Aindrita had allegedly attended parties that were attended by Ragini and Sanjjana on a WhatsApp group. "There was a video of Aindrita Ray promoting a party that went viral in some party groups. We want to question the couple based on that and also regarding the information provided by other accused persons," the CCB source said.  The police raided the resort of Aditya Alva located in Hebbal on Tuesday and seized DVR tapes of the CCTV cameras there. After a report by Bangalore Mirror, TNM confirmed with the CCB that the probe into the alleged drug trafficking began in May after a Sandalwood actor's car accident in April. During the lockdown, a Sandalwood actor was involved in a car accident with her friend Lokesh. The duo were returning from a house party, allegedly hosted by Aditya Alva, when they crashed into the Vasanth Nagar Railway underbridge. The police said that the local police had registered an accident case and did not probe it further. They suspect that the actor and her friend had allegedly consumed alcohol or drugs at the party when they crashed into the railway under bridge.  "They had sent one man to pose as the driver and when the police asked for his licence, they found that he was not the owner of the car. But that case was not investigated. There was information that Diganth and Aindrita attended this party and several others in the last few months, which they are being questioned about," the CCB source added.

Four-acre marijuana farm unearthed in Karnataka, police seize 9872 kg ganja

Crime
The police are on the lookout for the prime suspect in the case.
Chitradurga ganja seizure
The Karnataka police unearthed a marijuana cultivation and distribution racket in Chitradurga district's Rampura a fortnight ago and seized 9,872 kilograms of marijuana worth Rs 4.2 crore. Although three persons were arrested in connection with the case three days ago, the police are yet to track down the prime suspect Rudresh, who was cultivating cannabis plants in a land he had rented from three brothers in Chitradurga, officials said. After actor Ragini Dwivedi's arrest on September 4, the Rampura Police received a call from one of the locals, stating that they had seen cannabis plants being cultivated in Vaderahalli, located in Molakalmuru taluk. A constable named Gundappa was sent to check whether the tip was true. When Guddappa went to Vaderahalli, the locals took him to a four-acre plot nearby and the police found that the entire plot had cannabis plants growing up to 4 ft. "The locals were watching the news about drugs and realised that the crops growing in that plot was the ganja plant," the Rampura police said.  Chitradurga Superintendent of Police G Radhika was called to the spot and the police slashed down the plants and loaded it into trucks as evidence. Upon questioning the locals, the Rampura police found that the plot belonged to three brothers, who are residents of Rampura. The plot belongs to DB Manjunath, Y Manjunath, a teacher at the Thimmapur Government High School and the youngest brother DY Manjunath, the police said, adding that they immediately arrested the three men.  Around two years ago, a resident of Chitradurga, Samanthgouda, had allegedly approached the brothers stating that a man named Rudresh wanted to rent the four-acre plot to cultivate crops. Samanthgouda was the mediator between the two parties. "There is no written agreement that the land was leased. The three brothers claim that they had a verbal agreement, where Rudresh would pay them Rs 90,000 per month to rent the land and Samanthgouda would get a commission from it. The brothers claim to have no knowledge about the ganja being cultivated," the Rampura police said.  The police are now looking out for Rudresh as they believe that he was the primary cultivator. "We will arrest him soon. Only after his arrest can we find the distributors and peddlers. So far, we suspect that the ganja was being transported to districts across Karnataka as Rudresh has been cultivating it for a while. The plot is located between other plantations and unless one goes inside to see, it is hard to detect the ganja plants," the police said.  Three days ago, Samanthgouda was arrested. The four persons are currently in judicial custody and have been booked under Section 120(b) (Criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code and Sections 8 (prohibition of cultivation of cannabis plant), 20(a) (punishment for cultivation of cannabis plant) and 20(b) (rigorous imprisonment of 10 years or more for cultivation of cannabis plant) of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
