Accident
Firefighters at the scene were able to douse the flames after more than an hour, with the help of three fire engines.
Hangover pub in HSR Layout caught fire
A fire broke out at Hangover, a pub in Bengaluru’s HSR Layout, on Monday afternoon. Firefighters at the scene doused the flames after more than an hour, with the help of three fire engines. According to authorities, no one was injured due to the mishap. The fire broke out at around 12:30 pm, when metal structures were being welded on the first floor. The establishment was closed for business for the past 10 days due to the same repair work. “No one was injured in the fire fortunately. The fire department personnel attended the incident immediately. We suspect the welding work only triggered the fire. Some property has been damaged and we are assessing it,” Muni Reddy, Inspector of HSR Layout Police Station, who rushed to the spot, said. Local MLA Satish Reddy of Bommanahalli constituency also visited the accident spot to take stock of the situation.Hangover is located in the junction connecting the 14th and 27th main roads of HSR Layout Sector 1. Incidentally, it was shut down by the authorities for alleged violation of rules in February 2019. However, it returned to business within a month after obtaining a stay order. The pub had faced action over other alleged violations previously as well. This incident at Hangover comes after a major fire broke out in south Benagluru’s New Guddadahalli, near the Deepanjali Nagar Metro Station, on November 10. The fire at the Renuka Chemical Godown had also spread to other nearby areas, including an electrical parts manufacturing factory located next to the godown. One person who was injured in the fire died on Saturday, after five days of intensive care at the Victoria Hospital. Eight others, including firefighters who attended to the situation, were also injured, and are being treated at the same hospital.

Bengaluru woman found dead, family alleges husband harassed her over a 'prophecy'

Death
The woman's family alleged that the harassment by the husband increased after an astrologer said she won't conceive.
Ashwini and Yuvaraj
Ashwini and Yuvaraj
Twenty-five-year old Ashwini used to live with her mother and sister in Bengaluru. It was sometime last year that she convinced her mother that she wants to marry a man named Yuvaraja. In February, Yuvaraja, who is employed with a private company in Bengaluru and Ashwini got married. It was only on November 13, that Ashwini opened up to her mother and sister about the harassment she had been facing from Yuvaraja and his family. She alleged that the harassment had escalated after an astrologer made a prophecy. On November 14, Ashwini's family was told that she died of suicide. The astrologer had predicted that Ashwini will not bear children and this exacerbated the harassment faced by the woman, Ashwini (25) worked in the customer support department of a reputed online grocery store in Bengaluru. Her family alleged that her husband demanded expensive gifts and more dowry from Ashwini after the astrologer made the prediction. Problems reportedly started between Ashwini and Yuvaraj (30) soon after their marriage since Yuvaraj allegedly lost his job during the lockdown. The couple lived in Horamavu area in Bengaluru and a first information report (FIR) was registered in Hennur police station against Yuvaraj and his family members. According to the investigating police, Yuvaraj and his family allegedly harassed Ashwini particularly after an astrologer predicted that Ashwini would not bear children. She was also fat-shamed and faced domestic abuse from Yuvaraj. "He has harassed her for small reasons and she decided to end her life after the harassment. He was constantly telling her that she was fat and also harassed her based on the astrologer's prediction," said a police official investigating the case. Ashwini's family, speaking to TNM, said that Yuvaraj demanded expensive gifts including a mobile phone and more money as dowry. "She received a small salary. How can she afford gifts like mobile and bike? It is the husband's birthday on November 16 and he wanted the gifts. The police should investigate this," said a member of Ashwini's family speaking to TNM.  The couple also had an argument on November 13 and according to Ashwini's family, she was assaulted on the morning of November 14. Later on the same day Yuvaraj told Ashwini's family members that she was in the hospital. Ashwini was taken to a hospital in Bengaluru on Saturday morning at around 12 pm, police officials at Hennur Police Station say she died of strangulation and it seems to be a case of suicide. According to Ashwini's family, she lived a disciplined life and used to work long and irregular shifts to earn money for her family after her marriage. She also stayed by herself and away from her husband for a brief period, the reasons for which are not clear to the family. Ashwini's family also alleged that it is not possible that she took her own life and that the explanation given by Yuvaraj was a lie.  While investigating police said that Ashwini died by suicide and that the only injuries on her body were strangulation marks around her neck, Ashwini's family alleged that there were other injury marks on Ashwini's body and that Yuvaraj should also be investigated for murder or abetting suicide. Yuvaraj and his family member Shriram and friend Rakesh are accused in the case.    Yuvaraj was working in a private paint servicing company while Ashwini worked in customer support for a reputed online grocery store. Ashwini's family contended that Yuvaraj lost his job and depended on Ashwini to make ends meet.  Ashwini's family alleged that she was also assaulted by Yuvaraj and claimed that there were marks found on Ashwini's body after her death.

Mohandas Pai, three other trustees resign from Akshaya Patra Foundation

Controversy
Sources said that the resignation was related to an internal matter, which led to differences.
Mohandas Pai
Four independent trustees, including Chairman of Manipal Global Education Mohandas Pai, have resigned from The Akshaya Patra Foundation (TAPF). The other independent trustees who resigned include former Infosys Chief Financial Officer V Balakrishnan, co-founder of ChrysCapital Raj Kondur and adviser to Manipal Education and Medical Group, Abhay Jain.  Two new members have been appointed to the board of trustees. KV Chowdary, who formerly served as the Chairman of the Central Board of Direct Taxes is now Chairman of the Audit Committee at TAPF. Kaushik Dutta, former partner of PWC, is now a member of the Audit Committee.  “The outgoing trustees — Sri Mohandas Pai, Sri Abhay Jain, Sri V Balakrishnan and Sri Raj Kondur have rendered extraordinary service from the days of inception of Akshaya Patra in the year 2000. We are immensely grateful to them for their dedication and invaluable guidance. We welcome the new trustees and members of the Audit Committee and look forward to working with them to enhance and enrich our service to the children of our country,” said Madhu Pandit Dasa, Chairman of TAPF.  A source with TAPF told TNM that the resignations were related to an internal matter, which led to disagreements between trustees.  In the year 2000, Mohandas Pai and Abhay Jain met ISKCON’s President Madhu Pandit Dasa in Bangalore, where the idea to start Akshaya Patra was conceptualised. In July 2000, ISKCON began feeding government school children from the temple’s kitchen. In 2001, TAPF was established and now provides mid-day meals to government school children in Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Tamil Nadu, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Tripura and Assam. “Over the last two decades, our trustees have played a crucial role in helping the organisation grow into the world’s largest NGO-run school feeding programme. Akshaya Patra will be ever grateful to them,” said Sri Chanchalapathi Dasa – Vice-Chairman of the Foundation. Speaking to TNM, a member of the trust said that TAPF is now looking at revising their mid-day meal scheme and customise it to empower community-based kitchens, and also provide food native to respective districts or regions.  TAPF is also looking at working with anganwadi cooks, and paying them salaries which would be equal to the amount paid by the state government. “We want to call them school mothers. A lot of them were apprehensive and scared that the government would stop paying them. We have assured them that in addition to the government’s salaries, Akshaya Patra will give them additional salaries,” the trustee said.  TAPF is also planning to empower women self-help groups in rural areas to become cooks in these community-based kitchens. TAPF’s kitchens will be free after 10 am every day, and the foundation plans to train the women in self-help groups with food and beverage service skills. “The people in rural areas are some of the best cooks in the country. The training will be related to various foods, recipes and presentation of the food. We are planning to offer them jobs in Akshaya Patra kitchens itself,” the member of the trust added.  Additionally, TAPF is in the process of creating a proposal wherein farmers would be asked to grow produce and sell it directly to Akshaya Patra. After the Agricultural Produce Market Committees were disbanded with the new Farm Acts earlier this year, the regulations for contract farming were reduced. Akshaya Patra plans to contract the farming of crops that it requires for the mid-day meals, and purchase it for the community-based kitchens. “We are planning to hold talks with farmers at taluk-level and ask them to grow crops and give us the milk. This is still under the planning stage,” the member said. TAPF has also hired the consultancy services of chef Sanjev Kapoor to help develop recipes for the mid-day meals, as food habits vary from district to district.

A 21-year-old agricultural worker from Karnataka’s Haveri district was arrested on Saturday for allegedly raping and murdering his mother. The Shiggaon Police said that the man allegedly accused his mother of having affairs with multiple men. Her family says that she was in a relationship with a man and the son who did not approve of it wrongly accused her of having many affairs. On the evening of November 12, the mother and son allegedly argued, after which he is said to have raped and killed her.  According to the Shiggaon Police, the victim, a 40-year-old agricultural worker, was living with her son at their residence in Vanahalli. The woman’s husband had died 15 years ago and she had been in a relationship with another man from the same area.  The residents of the area allegedly told the man that his mother had been having affairs with multiple men. Angered by it, he had fought with her regarding her boyfriend on multiple occasions in the past. Shiggaon Police said that over a week before the murder, the 21-year-old man had argued with his mother and demanded that she break off her relationship with her boyfriend.  “The woman had allegedly told her son that she wanted to be with her boyfriend. This had led to a huge argument,” the Shiggaon Police said. On the morning of November 12, the woman and her sister had gone to harvest the jowar crops in the fields. They finished work and headed home. Police said that the woman’s son allegedly forced her to drink alcohol. He then dragged her into the fields near Gangibhavi Road. An argument ensued and the man allegedly pushed his mother to the ground and raped and strangled her.  On the morning of November 13, when the victim’s sister arrived at her nephew’s residence, he is said to have informed her that his mother had already left for the fields. By Friday night, when she did not return home, the victim’s sister, her husband and daughter organised a search party to look for her. They found her body in the jowar fields near Gangibhavi Road at around 9 pm. The victim’s sister filed a complaint with the police and allegedly revealed that the mother and son were fighting constantly.  “My daughter and I began suspecting that he had something to do with her death because when we found her body, her clothes were in a disarray. We had asked him many times on Friday (November 13) about my sister’s whereabouts and he lied repeatedly. When I filed the complaint with the police, I had mentioned his name, when they asked  me if I suspected anyone’s involvement,” the victim’s sister told TNM, while adding that the residents in and around Vanahalli had been speaking ill about her sister and had spread rumours that she was having affairs with multiple men.  “She was seeing one man but you know how people talk about women who have affairs after their husbands die. My nephew used to verbally abuse her when people began talking,” she said.  On Saturday morning, the Shiggaon Police took the 21-year-old man into custody based on statements given by the victim’s sister and niece. Upon interrogation, the man allegedly confessed to the crime. An FIR was registered at the Shiggaon Police Station under sections 376 (rape) and 302 (murder) of the Indian Penal Code on Saturday evening. He was produced before the magistrate on Monday and has been remanded to judicial custody.
