Pro-Kannada groups urge Yediyurappa to roll back decision to form Maratha board

Protest
Activist Vatal Nagaraj said if the newly formed Maratha Development Authority is not rolled back, pro-Kannada groups will go ahead with a bandh on December 5.
Despite a government warning, pro-Kannada organisations indicated that they are ready to go ahead with the Karnataka bandh planned on December 5 in protest against the formation of the Maratha Development Authority (MDA). Speaking to reporters, serial protester and pro-Kannada activist Vatal Nagaraj said that if the newly formed MDA is not rolled back, pro-Kannada groups will go ahead with a bandh in two weeks time. "If the decision is not reversed, we will do a Karnataka bandh on December 5. Chief Minister Yediyurappa should resign," Vatal Nagaraj told reporters in Bengaluru on Saturday. On Friday, pro-Kannada groups staged a protest in Bengaluru’s Maurya Circle and several other parts of the state, demanding that the government withdraw its decision.  Chief Minister B S Yediyurappa had on November 13 announced setting up the MDA, earmarking Rs 50 crore for the overall development of the Maratha population in the state. The move was seen in some quarters as an attempt to woo the sizeable community members in Basavakalyan Assembly segment in Bidar district in north Karnataka and Belagavi Lok Sabha constituency bordering Maharashtra where bye-elections are due. The decision has not gone down well with several pro-Kannada organisations. The consortium of pro-Kannada organisations such as Kannada Chalavali Vatal Paksha (KCVP), which Vatal heads, and Karnataka Rakshana Vedike (Shivarame Gowda faction) passed a resolution opposing the government move and deciding to stage the bandh. The Ola-Uber Drivers and Owners Association too, has extended its support to the bandh. In a statement, KCVP chief Vatal Nagaraj claimed support of the former chief of the Kannada Development Authority, Mukhyamantri Chandru and former head of the Kannada Film Chamber of Commerce, Sa Ra Govindu, among others, for the consortium. However, two other factions of Karnataka Rakshana Vedike belonging to T A Narayana Gowda and Praveen Shetty, have said they would take a call only after discussing with their leaders. As the matter snowballed into a controversy after his announcement, Yediyurappa clarified that he was only setting up the Maratha Development Authority and not the Marathi Development Authority. He stated that Maratha community members are "staunch Hindutvavadis", many of whom need to be elevated socially and economically.  The Chief Minister has warned that he would not allow any 'forced bandh' on December 5. "We will take strict action if the forced bandh is called," he had said.

‘Will not allow any group to force a bandh’: Karnataka Chief Minister Yediyurappa

Politics
Yediyurappa’s statement came after pro-Kannada groups staged a protest in Bengaluru and other parts of the state.
BS Yediyurappa
Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Saturday warned strict action against pro-Kannada groups, who “forcibly impose a bandh” in the state. He said that he would not allow a forced bandh anywhere across the state. Yeddiyurappa’s statement comes in the wake of pro-Kannada groups calling for a bandh on December 5. Cab and auto rickshaw drivers have offered their support for the bandh. The Karnataka Bar Owners’ Association too had lent support for the bandh and had agreed to shut down their outlets on December 5.  On Friday, pro-Kannada groups staged a protest in Bengaluru’s Maurya Circle and several other parts of the state, demanding that the government withdraw its decision to allocate Rs 50 crore for setting up the Maratha Development Board ahead of the Basavakalyan and Maski bye-elections.  “I am asking all pro-Kannada organisations to come and be a part of the bandh on December 5. We are requesting the government to withdraw its decision to set up the Maratha Development Board. If the government does this before December 5, we will call off the bandh,” Vatal Nagaraj said.  Pro-Kannada protesters led by Vatal Nagaraj burnt effigies and shouted slogans against the government’s decision. Protesters were detained by the police in Bengaluru and Gadag. In this backdrop, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa spoke to the media at the Vidhana Soudha and said, “I am for Kannada and Kannadigas. I am ready to take any measures for their welfare. I will not allow any groups to force a bandh anywhere. I have noticed that they have burnt effigies and resorted to disruptive activities. This will not be tolerated,” BS Yediyurappa said.  The Chief Minister said that protests can be held peacefully but he would not allow a bandh to take place. He said that the protests were taking a ‘different colour” for reasons that were other than “development of Kannadigas”.  “My government is trying to do justice to all groups of people without any discrimination. This bandh is not meant for what they are saying but has a different colour to it. So, I am asking them to peacefully withdraw their call for a bandh,” BS Yediyurappa said.

Politics
The Congress leader, however, said that he will not be able to make it due to election campaigning.
DK Shivakumar
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has issued summons to Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee President DK Shivakumar to appear before the investigators for questioning on November 23. However, speaking to the media, DK Shivakumar said, “The CBI investigators had come with the summons to my house on November 19, but I wasn’t at home. They have asked me to come at 4 pm on November 23. I have written a letter to them stating that I would be in Basavakalyan and Maski on those days for the election campaign. I have asked them if I can appear for questioning on November 25 instead in my letter.” The CBI registered an FIR against DK Shivakumar on October 2 stating that he was allegedly in possession of disproportionate assets worth Rs 74.93 crore. The CBI alleged that these assets belong to him and his family members. On October 5, the CBI conducted a search and seizure operation at 14 properties belonging to Shivakumar, including in Karnataka, Delhi and Mumbai. The CBI had recovered Rs 57 lakh and several allegedly incriminating documents from these properties including bank statements and hard drives.  In September 2019, the Karnataka government had granted permission to the CBI to launch a probe against Shivakumar. Subsequently, the Union government too had granted permission after which the CBI began its probe in March 2020 against Shivakumar and his associates.  The CBI’s probe began after the Enforcement Directorate shared information related to his finances with the agency. The ED is currently probing a money laundering case against Shivakumar. The ED had arrested him in September 2019 and he was in Tihar Jail for 51 days before the Delhi High Court granted him bail.  The ED had accused Shivakumar of laundering black money through various proxies including his family members and close associates.

Karnataka is mulling ban on online gambling sites: Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai

Politics
Bavaraj Bommai said that the state government is mulling over bringing in a new legislation to address the issue of youth getting addicted to gambling.
Basavaraj Bommai
Karnataka is actively considering imposing a ban on online gambling sites and mobile applications (apps) in the state, state Home Minister Basavaraj Bommai said. Speaking to reporters on the sidelines of a programme to honour police personnel with CM's medal in Bengaluru, Bommai said, "Online games are ruining many lives in the state. We have noticed it. Many illegal gambling and betting websites have mushroomed during the lockdown. We need to put an end to such a menace." The home minister added that the state government was still studying various laws and rules that are already in practice in other states. "What is more worrisome is that our youngsters have become addicted to this type of gambling. Many have lost their properties. I appeal to parents and elders to come out and register a complaint against online platforms if any youngster is addicted to gambling and forcing them to give away their properties," he said. Responding to a question, Bommai asserted that the police department is committed to stamp out the drug menace in the state and it does not matter if an accused is high-profile or low-profile perpetrator. "For us going to the root of the problem is important and not the person per se," he said and reiterated that the police will not succumb to any pressure.

Bengaluru data theft case: How a 25-year-old carried out operations without detection

Crime
Cops suspect that the man may be involved in numerous data theft cases, and had set a target of making many crores via data theft.
Sri Krishna alias sreeki, the hacker who was arrested in the drug case
Central Crime Branch officials have said that the 25-year-old hacker was arrested in Bengaluru on Wednesday for helping drug peddlers in the city to procure drugs through the darknet has revealed his modus operandi. The CCB was led to the techie,  Sri Krishna alias Sreeki, when they were interrogating eight persons in the Bengaluru drugs case including Darshan Lamani, the son of former Congress minister Rudrappa Lamani, who was arrested recently. Darshan Lamani was arrested for sheltering and hosting two of his friends who turned out to be drug peddlers in Goa.  Sri Krishna allegedly hacked into gaming platforms and stole points, which is used to procure bitcoins. He used the cryptocurrency to buy drugs from the dark web, according to the police. Police said that he procured the drugs after instructions from another accused in the case — Suneesh Hegde, a construction company owner in Bengaluru. Upon his arrest, the CCB has now uncovered his alleged involvement in multiple cyber crimes involving data theft and his modus operandi.  Data theft The police say Sai Krishna used online gaming platforms with chat boxes to communicate with buyers of data but most times, Sri Krishna allegedly walked up to people on the road and asked them if he could use their phone as he had lost his. “He would tell them he had to get in touch with someone urgently and download Wickr app on the stranger’s phone.” Wickr is an encrypted messaging app, which also has a ‘burn-on-read’ setting, where the recipient will have access to the message only for a limited time after receiving it. “He would communicate with whoever necessary (referring to buyers of data) and leave. In the Wickr app, he would use the setting where the message would get deleted a few seconds after it was received by the person on the other end,” the CCB source said.  Police said that Sri Krishna was friends with an accused person in the drug case -- a construction company owner named Suneesh Hegde. “Suneesh Hegde treated Sreeki like a son. They would both extort money from private companies after stealing data. If the companies did not pay them, they would end up selling the data to a third party. We are still getting names of all the companies websites Sreeki hacked into,” the CCB source added.  CCB officials said that the hacker used a wireless auditing platform to hack into WiFi servers of private companies and government agencies, where he stole data and sold it for money. “He began explaining to us how he did it and we realised that he is a very talented hacker,” a CCB source said.  Police said that he allegedly used Hak5’s WiFi Pineapple device and used it as a rogue access point to conduct man in the middle (MitM) attacks. Hak5's WiFi Pineapple is a device which is used by network security administrators to detect whether systems have been compromised. It can also be used as a rogue access point by black hat hackers.   Sri Krishna would allegedly take the device within the range of a certain WiFi network’s range and use wireless hacking tools to obtain the passwords of the said WiFi servers.  Once he had the passwords, he would be able access the usernames and passwords of people who used the said WiFi network as he would be able to mirror the online activities on his laptop. CCB sources said that Sri Krishna allegedly stole credit card data from a private company and sold it to an Australian national.  “He had a target to make a certain amount of  through data theft. We suspect that so far he has made Rs 18 crore by selling data to third parties on the dark web,” the police said.  Sri Krishna did not have a mobile phone. When the CCB questioned him about his cellphone, Sri Krishna allegedly laughed and told the police that “no good hacker would make the mistake of using a cellphone”, the CCB source said.

Kali idol at 12th century Hoysala temple in Karnataka found broken

Heritage
While the police suspect foul play, they also said that the temple priest had found cracks in the idol a few days ago.
An idol of goddess Dakshina Kali was found broken and its parts toppled at the Doddagaddavalli Chatushkuta Temple in Karnataka’s Hassan on Friday morning. The broken idol has led the police to suspect foul play, and they say it could be treasure hunters. The temple dates back to 1113 CE, built by the Hoysalas. It was one among many proposed to become UNESCO world heritage sites.  In the early hours of Friday, Venkatesh, the temple priest who lives opposite the temple, noticed that the idol was broken. He went to the temple at 6.45 am on Friday to light the lamps and noticed that the idol was broken.  The idol was broken into many pieces, and the torso was broken in two. According to the police, the priest took pictures and placed the torso back in its position.  The idol is made of black granite and the Hassan SP Srinivas Gowda said that the priest, who lives with his family, locked the temple gates on Thursday evening and went home. “He and his brother Balakrishna claim they did not hear any noise at night. The idol is very heavy and it would have made some noise when it broke,” he added.  He said that the investigation is on and it could be an act of vandalism as many believe treasure to be hidden inside the idols at Hoysala temples. “But it could also be a lack of adequate security and negligence on behalf of the caretakers,” he added. Srinivas Gowda said that the temple lacked adequate security and is one among the 12 monuments in Hassan that is being preserved by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). He said that the temple priest had complained to ASI and the taluk officials in Belur that the idol had allegedly been shaking and was unstable.  According to The Hindu, ASI officials said that Venkatesh had pointed out cracks in the idol and that it was, in fact, shaking. The SP said that the ASI and Muzrai Department must deploy security guards to ensure such an incident does not recur.
