Three people in Karnataka, who returned from the United Kingdom, have been found to be infected by the new coronavirus variant which is thought to be more infectious. This is as of Tuesday afternoon and more samples are being tested to ascertain if other patients too have been infected with the new UK strain. All the three are residents of Bengaluru, and out of them two are a woman and her child, confirmed Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar. He said the primary and secondary contacts of these patients are being traced and tested.  This comes after the union government earlier on Tuesday morning announced that six people across India, all returnees from the UK, were found to be infected with the new UK strain. The union government said that the genome sequence test to check for the new strain of the virus of the six samples were carried out in NIMHANS (National Institute of Mental Health and Neurosciences), in Bengaluru, the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad and the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune.  TNM on Monday had reported how the state health department has confirmed that so far that 26 people in Karnataka who have returned from the UK in the past month have tested positive for the virus but it was not established yet if they had tested positive for the variant. As a precautionary measure, all these patients have been kept in government hospitals in the state even if they were asymptomatic. The Union government had placed restrictions on flights between India and the UK from December 22 as a precautionary measure against the spread of the new variant However, some of the passengers of these flights have not been tested yet as they have apparently switched off their mobile phones and have remained untraceable, Health Minister Dr K Sudhakar said, adding that the department will take legal action against these people if they don’t cooperate with the government authorities.

He reached Gunasagar in Kadur taluk of the district on Monday evening and then asked the driver to leave him since he had to meet someone, the driver said. The Bengaluru police have issued traffic regulations on New Year’s Eve. In a comprehensive note, the traffic department listed changes in the routes, vehicular parking norms and further restrictions on movement. The changes will come into effect from December 31, 2020, 8 pm to January 1, 2021, 1 pm. This comes a day after the police issued orders banning any events, parties or performances at public places and commercial establishments (hotels and pubs) in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve due to the pandemic. “Despite the orders, people may gather on MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, and during the celebrations, youth participation in risky behaviour like vehicular racing increases within the city limits. To avoid the danger of the COVID-19 pandemic and in view of public safety, we are banning vehicular traffic congestion and modifying routes” read the statement. Invoking the Karnataka Traffic Control Act, 1960 and the Motor Traffic Act, 1989, the police have called for restrictions in movement of vehicles on parts of Museum Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, MG Road and Museum Road to stop people from crowding the areas and to reduce traffic congestion. Vehicular movement on these roads has been banned, except for police and emergency duty vehicles, from 8 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1, 2021. The police have also placed restrictions on the use of following overpasses (flyovers) — elevated flyover from Roopenagrahara to Electronic city access road, Jayadeva flyover, Dairy Circle flyover, Kadugodi Flyover, Sarjapur flyover. Access will be limited to these flyovers from 10 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1, 2021. The order also says that vehicular parking will also be prohibited on Infantry Road, Cubbon Road, Brigade Road, Indiranagar 100ft Road, St Marks Road and Church Street from 4 pm on the New Year’s Eve. “The local authorities have been instructed to install all the necessary notice boards for the implementation of the traffic modification system,” read the statement. The Karnataka government, earlier, issued orders prohibiting DJ parties, special events, parties or any kind of performances at public places and commercial establishments like hotels and pubs in Bengaluru on New Year’s Eve owing to the pandemic.

Bengaluru’s AC bus fares to reduce by 20% from January 1

Transport
The AC buses took a hit in ridership in recent months as passengers feared a greater risk in infection while travelling in them.
BMTC AC bus fares to go down

The Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC) has decided to selectively reduce fares for its air-conditioned bus services from January 1, 2021. In a decision announced on Monday night, the BMTC said that bus fares and consequently daily and monthly pass rates of Vajra services will be reduced by about 20%, to attract more passengers. However, there won’t be any change in the fares of ordinary and Vayu Vajra (airport buses) services. Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, the AC bus services were majorly hit as passengers did not travel in them fearing a greater risk of infection. However, with time, the buses have been brought back on the roads. In the initial days after the easing of the lockdown, only 10% of the 850-plus fleet was operating. Officials expect that with the daily case numbers going down in Bengaluru, there will be an upswing in ridership. Other than reducing the fares, the BMTC is also looking to limit the number of routes where the AC buses ply on. While AC buses form a little more than 10% of the total fleet of the more than 6500 buses in the city, they are the major revenue generator for the government-run corporation. Earlier, these Vajra buses were targeted for office goers in the IT corridor along the Outer Ring Road, Electronic City and Whitefield areas of Bengaluru. But now, with many opting for work for home, officials are reconsidering the areas in which to introduce new routes. Earlier this month, staff of the BMTC, along with the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) had gone on strike demanding recognition as state government employees. Citing lack of revenue, the salaries of the corporation staff was delayed ahead of the festive season.
