Video of man attacking woman with machete in Karnataka given false communal spin

Crime
The people involved are both from the same community, investigating police said.
Hubballi, woman
A 30-second video of a man attacking a woman with a machete has been shared with ‘love jihad’ claim on Twitter and Facebook. The viral messages suggest that Ismail murdered a Hindu woman. The video was tweeted by @AchAnkurArya and Akash RSS. Both of them have shared misinformation in the past. pic.twitter.com/SMe11tXvZg — Ach. Ankur Arya (@AchAnkurArya) December 22, 2020 Below is a screenshot from Facebook that shows multiple users have posted the video with an identical claim. As earlier reported by TNM, the incident took place in Hubballi in Dharwad district of Karnataka and a stalker assaulted a woman in broad daylight. The name of the accused is Ismail K Kukura,25. SK Holeyannavar, the investigating police officer told TNM, “The woman ended the relationship and is now in a relationship with another man and this angered him.” He further said that while the victim's name is typically a Hindu name, it is also commonly used by other communities in villages near Hubballi. Police commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad Labhu Ram also confirmed that the couple hails from the same community. The accused Ismail is an auto driver in Rampura in Dharwad district. The woman hails from Moraba village in Dharwad  The victim works at a jewellery store in Hubballi. Her employer reiterated to fact-checker Alt News that she is from the Muslim community. A Hubballi-based journalist confirmed that she is recovering well and has been shifted to the general ward. Thus, a video of a man attacking a woman with a machete in broad daylight has been given a false communal spin. Both of them follow the same faith. This story was published on Alt News. It has been republished with permission.

Bengaluru reports Rs 48 crore worth of liquor sales on New Year's Eve

Liquor
This figure is despite section 144 of the CrPC being imposed in Bengaluru on December 31.
Alcohol, Bengaluru
Alcohol worth Rs 48.28 crore was sold on December 31 in Bengaluru, figures released by the Karnataka Excise Department stated. The figures stated that 56,000 carton boxes of Indian Made Liquor (IML) and 50,000 carton boxes of beer were sold in the city on Thursday. The figures were comparable to the sale of alcohol on December 31 in 2019, when Rs 49.89 crore worth of alcohol was sold in the city. The same figure was Rs 67.5 crore for the entire state. This is even after restrictions were placed in Bengaluru under section 144 of the CrPC from 12 pm on December 31 to 6 am on January 1. While people were free to move outside, they were not allowed to gather in groups of more than five people. 'No man' zones were created in a few busy areas of the city like Church Street, Indiranagar and Brigade Road.  The police in the city encouraged residents to celebrate the new year inside their homes. The Excise Department stated that it had sold alcohol worth Rs 519 crore in Karnataka in the month of December 2020. This is the highest sales figure in the month of December in the last four years. The department had earlier reported that liquor sales had picked up in the second half of 2020, after the lockdown enforced over the coronavirus outbreak restricted the sale of alcohol for over a month in March and April. As of November-end in 2020, the cumulative revenue collection was only 4.25% less than that generated by November-end in 2019. The deficit was reduced gradually from 58.15% to 33.49%, 21.26% and 15.07% in May, June, July and August respectively, as per figures shared by the excise department. On the first day of stores reopening after the lockdown on May 4, 2020, long queues were seen in Bengaluru outside alcohol stores. The state reported sales of Rs 45 crore worth of alcohol on the day.

Karnataka will carry out a COVID-19 vaccine dry run in five districts, including Bengaluru across the state on Saturday, an official said on Friday. "A dry run for COVID-19 vaccination will be conducted in five districts - Belagavi, Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, Mysuru and Shivamogga across the state, as directed by the Union Health Ministry to streamline logistics for supplying the medicine when rolled out commercially soon," a state health official told IANS. In Bengaluru, the city's civic corporation has identified three primary health centres (PHCs) for the mock exercise of the mega immunisation programme. "Arrangements have been made to conduct the vaccine dry run in three PHCs across the city, with training to 25 health workers in each centre for the programme," said Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Administrator Gaurav Gupta. The dry run will be held at the Kamashipalya centre in the city's west zone, Vidyapeetha centre in south zone and Hargade centre at Anekal in the urban district's southern region. "We have lined up 1,517 PHCs across the city for the actual vaccine inoculation from January-end or early February," Gaurav Gupta said in a statement. The civic body will submit a report on the dry run to the state and central governments as directed by the health ministry. The data will also be uploaded on the Co-Win application platform, the digital platform for the nationwide campaign. "The dry run will prepare the state to manage Covid vaccine supply, storage and logistics, including cold chain management. In Belagavi district, the dry run will be held at Vantamuri urban PHC, Kittur community health centre and the state-run general hospital at Hukkeri. In Kalaburagi district, the mock exercise will be held at the Ashok Nagar PHC in the city, Jewargi taluk hospital and Aurad rural centre. In Mysuru district, the dry run will be conducted at Jayanagar community health centre in the city's Jayanagar suburb, Bilikere PHC and K.R. Nagar taluk hospital. In Shivamogga district, the exercise will be held at McGann hospital in the city, Shikaripura taluk hospital and at Antharagange PHC at Bhadravati taluk. "At each centre, a medical officer (doctor), two vaccinating officers (male and female), a data entry operator to verify documents and upload the data on the Co-Win vaccine network portal and a security officer were trained on Friday," the official said. The exercise will be held as per COVID-19 vaccination operational guidelines, which include bio-medical waste management and adverse reaction following the immunisation (AEFI) tagging. "At each centre, five vaccine beneficiaries will be observed for about 30 minutes in the AEFI room during the dry run. About 100 people will be vaccinated per day at every PHC across the state from 9 am to 5 pm when the mega programme is implemented later this month," added the official.

Karnataka schools reopen for students of classes 10 and 12 after over nine months

Education
Teachers were tested for COVID-19 and students had to undergo temperature checks while entering school campuses.
Karnataka school
Students of classes 10 and 12 in Karnataka returned to schools on Friday after a nine-month hiatus following the lockdown imposed over the coronavirus outbreak in March 2020. Government schools in Karnataka reported a large number of students turning up for classes in the school on Friday.  Students entered the school campuses after undergoing temperature checks. They were asked to compulsorily wear masks and sanitise their hands. "We had sanitisation desks at every entrance of the school and all students who entered had to undergo temperature checks. Those who have high temperature or have visible symptoms will be asked to return home," a teacher in a government school in Bengaluru said. The teacher added that the preparations were similar to the measures taken while conducting exams in schools earlier this year.   Several private schools too decided to open on Friday however some school managements have decided to continue with online classes and take a longer time to prepare for the reopening of schools.  Unlike their private school counterparts, government school students in Karnataka have not had online classes in this academic year. Their education was disrupted when the Vidyagama scheme, a community learning scheme, launched by the Karnataka government was stopped in October due to reports of COVID-19 cases among teachers and students.  Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar visited schools and checked the measures in place for the students on the first day of classes. Students who wish to attend classes in school were asked to carry letters from their parents giving consent. Teachers in government schools took COVID-19 tests before the reopening of schools.  Regular classes for class 11 students are expected to resume from January 15. The Vidyagama scheme for students of classes 6 to 9 is also expected to resume shortly.

Seafood in Udupi, coffee in Kodagu: Karnataka pushes One District One Product scheme

Food processing
Under the scheme, small businesses involved in the selected products can get government support in seeking loans and gaining training to market their products.
Yediyurappa, Karnataka Chief Minister looking left
Karnataka is set to make a push for the 'One District, One Product' (ODOP) scheme to promote the micro food processing industry in the state. This means one product from each district - bakery in Bengaluru, seafood in Udupi, onions in Bagalkote - will be promoted in the state. The products in every district were chosen on the basis of their prevalence in the district and by considering the scope in the market for them. In the coastal Udupi and Dakshina Kannada districts, seafood and marine products were selected, while bakery products were picked in Bengaluru and coffee was picked in Kodagu. The hilly district in Malnad region of Karnataka is known for its coffee production and accounts for 30-40% of the total coffee production in India. It is also nicknamed the ‘coffee cup’ of India. In Bengaluru Rural, the product selected for promotion is poultry products. In Chikkamagaluru, spices were earmarked, while pineapples were chosen in Shivamogga district. Other products included are Kalaburagi (red gram), Mandya (jaggery), Vijayapura (lemon), Haveri (mango), Gadag (Byadagi chillies), Bidar (ginger), Ballari (fig), Mysuru (bananas), and Koppal (guava). The Central government approved Karnataka's list under the PM - Formalisation of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME) scheme. This would help small businesses involved in the selected product to get government support in seeking loans and gaining training to market their products. Deccan Herald reported that district-level trainers will be in place to help businesses while a district portal will be made through which applicants can send business proposals involving the product selected in the district. The Centre will invest 60% of the expenses while the rest will be funded by the state. The project aims to help 10,784 enterprises. ODOP is in place in several states of India and is the theme of micro industry promotion at the district level.

Bengaluru residents beautify HSR Layout streets, authorities extend help

Civic Movement
According to residents of 24th Street in HSR Layout, unused amenities, the menace of public urination and lack of streetlights motivated them to start the initiative.

For a long time, residents of 24th Street in Bengaluru’s HSR Layout noticed that several amenities in the area, like the public bathroom, remained unused. The stench of urine lingered in the air and the area lacked streetlights, too. Instead of complaining or silently putting up with the menace, the residents motivated themselves to tackle it. They swung into action and started a people’s movement called the Community Task Force (CTF), to repair and beautify the area. The members gathered every morning since December 6, inspected the areas that needed attention and started beautifying the neighbourhood. With benches, public gym and plants, they managed to give the area a new lease of life within three weeks. The citizens’ efforts have been met with a positive response from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), Bengaluru Electricity Supply Company (Bescom) and other local authoritative bodies. Special Commissioner (Solid Waste Management) Randeep Dev visited the locality and inaugurated the public gym in the area on Friday. At the event, he assured the citizens to install bio-toilet facilities to address the problem of public urination.   Krishna Kumar, a member of the initiative, said, “We cleaned the stretch of footpath adjacent to the Karnataka Electricity Board (KEB) substation on 24th Main, Second Sector. We painted the walls of the substation and now people from all over the city are joining hands to create beautiful murals on the wall.” The newly inaugurated public gym at HSR Layout and the painted KEB wall Some residents even donated equipment for the public gym, furnished the street with benches and installed leaf composters. They also planted saplings around the area. “To attract more people from the neighbourhood, we started a small movement called the ‘Walk in the Ward’, where we gather and walk around to examine which areas need immediate attention,” said 70-year-old Ramakant, another member of Community Task Force. While the Bescom installed streetlights in the area, the BBMP has appointed pourakarmikas to maintain the cleanliness in the area.  “Some more work needs to be undertaken, including retiling the footpath. The authorities have assured that they will undertake the work soon,” said Kumar. He added that they are planning to further this movement by emulating this model in the neighbouring streets in HSR Layout.
