A private bus, which was heading from Karnataka to Kerala’s KasAragod for a wedding function, met with an accident in the district. Kasaragod District Collector D Sajith Babu confirmed the death of six persons, including a child. Many are reported to be seriously injured and have been admitted to various hospitals, including hospitals in the bordering district of Dakshina Kannada in Karnataka. All passengers are said to be natives of Karnataka. According to reports, the accident took place around 11.30 am near Panathur in Kasaragod. The vehicle is said to have fell from an elevated road, plunging into a house located below. However, according to reports, the house was fortunately empty at the time of the accident. According to visuals from the accident spot, the bus has been massively mangled, as it reportedly plunged from a great height. Some passengers were said to have been trapped under the bus. “Panthur is an elevated region. According to people present there, about 70 people were inside the bus. However, they managed to evacuate all passengers from the bus. Five people were declared brought dead to a government hospital in the region,” Kasaragod Collector D Sajith Babu told New 18 Kerala. He also added that 24 people have been admitted to Kanhangad district hospital. “The Resident Medical Officer of the hospital said one person brought there succumbed to injuries. So, in total, six people have died so far,” the Collector told Asianet News. The Collector also said that since Panthur does not have many hospitals, the injured passengers had to be rushed to other hospitals, including in Karnataka. According to a survivor who spoke to News 18 Kerala, there were more than 55 passengers in the bus. Meanwhile, the Collector also added that people are being transferred to Pariyaram Medical College hospital in Kannur district. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan condoled the deaths and said that the injured will be given adequate treatment facilities. After years of sustained campaigning by rail activists in Bengaluru, the first train route to the Kempegowda International Airport will start functioning from Monday. With this, commuters will get the first non-road, faster alternative to reach the airport. One can board a train from the city and reach the airport halt station (situated at the edge of the airport boundary) at fares as low as Rs 10-15. A total of five trains will run between the city and the airport halt station for the next few months. From City Railway Station the trains will leave once at 4:45 am in the morning and once at 9 pm in the evening. From Yehlanka, Yeshwantpur and Bangalore Cantonment stations—the trains will leave at 7 am, 8:30 am and 5:55 pm respectively.  Similarly, the trains from the airport will leave at 6:43 pm and 10:37 pm for Majestic, and 6:22 am, 7: 45 am and 8:21 am from Yelahanka, Bangalore Cantonment and Yeshwantpur stations respectively. The train timings by the South Western Railway have been fixed in consultation with the airport authority so as to primarily benefit hundreds of airport staff. From there, the Bangalore International Airport Limited (BIAL), the company that manages the KIA will run shuttle buses to take the passengers to the terminal. All other options to reach the airport are way more costlier with bus tickets costing at least Rs 250 from most parts of the city and cab fares costing upwards of Rs 700. By the end of  2023, another train line to the airport as part of the recently approved dedicated suburban rail project is also expected to be ready. That line is expected to run trains more faster and frequently. A proposed metro rail line project connecting the city and the airport is yet to be approved by the union government. It was earlier reported that the halt station built with funding from BIAL in the Yelahanka and Devanahalli section had been ready for use since September. However like in many routes, the trains were not running since the imposition of lockdown in March 2019 in wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Sandalwood actor Sanjjanaa Galrani posted a message of gratitude on the microblogging site Instagram. The actor thanked her family, friends and followers on social media for their concern and announced that she is focusing on improving her health. This is her second social media post since her release from the Parappana Agrahara Central Prison. Galrani, thanking her one million followers, wrote, “I have read every single message and your precious concern makes me feel really special.” She further wrote that she will be active on social media after she improves her health and that she is grateful for the love she received from her fans, friends and family alike. Ever since her release from Parappana Agrahara Central Prison, she had been keeping to herself and spending time with her family. Galrani had earlier posted a fan edit of her sister and her with a caption that read, “There is no better friend than a sister." She posted other fan photos as well.  The actor was granted conditional bail on December 12 by the Karnataka High Court in the Sandalwood drug case. She was granted bail on medical grounds by the court; was asked to mark her attendance twice every month, submit a personal bond of Rs 3 lakh with two sureties. Sanjjanaa was arrested by the Bengaluru Crime Branch in September 2020 for allegedly procuring and supplying drugs to high-profile party-goers in Bengaluru. She spent 90 days in prison. She was one among the 13 people whose names were mentioned in the FIR related to the case. Apart from the cases launched by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), the Enforcement Directorate is also probing the actor on the charges of money laundering. The Bengaluru Police started a crackdown on the alleged use of narcotics in Sandalwood in the last week of August.  After noted Kannada film director-producer Indrajit Lankesh alleged that many actors were involved in drug consumption and the existing nexus between them and the drug mafia, several from the industry, including Sanjjana were raided. This crackdown followed a similar crackdown on prominent Bollywood personalities after Sushant Singh Rajput’s death.

Plan to name a few Bengaluru roads after Muslim leaders to be dropped

Politics
MPs Tejasvi Surya and Anantkumar Hegde were among the leaders who opposed the proposal to name 11 roads after Muslim leaders.
Tejasvi Surya and Anant Hegde
After some BJP MPs voiced their opposition, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)  has written to the government recommending dropping the proposal to name 11 roads in Padarayanapura ward in the city after social workers and leaders belonging to the minority community. The BBMP, in its meeting held in September, had decided to name the roads in Ward 135 after social workers and other personalities, all belonging to the Muslim community. In his December 31 letter, the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad has cited objections from sections of citizens including BJP MPs Anantkumar Hegde, P C Mohan and Tejasvi Surya, among others. He has also cited certain sections of the Karnataka Municipal Corporations Act, 1976 in his letter to the Additional Chief Secretary Urban Development department, while recommending to the government that the proposal be dropped. "After the public uproar over proposed naming of certain roads in a few Muslim dominated Bangalore after only Muslim names, BBMP has dropped the idea.A vigilant Hindu society can thwart such ill intentioned attempts," Surya had tweeted the same day the BBMP Commissioner wrote to the government. The issue had come to light when the BBMP called for objections to the renaming proposal. Following this, Hegde and Surya had written to the BBMP Commissioner objecting to the proposal. In his letter, Surya had said, "The christening of roads in a Muslim-dominated locality with only Muslim names reeks of the same communal mentality of the two-nation theory and the Muslim Leagues demand for separate electorates for Hindus and Muslims. This is dangerous and must be condemned." The letter was written in the context of a December 16 notification which was passed by the BBMP Revenue Department. Padarayanapura within the Chamrajpet Assembly constituency has been in the news since it became the first ward in the city to get sealed as per COVID-19 containment measures taken by the BBMP in April.

Karnataka allows shops and businesses to function 24 hours a day

Business
The rule applies for all days of the year, for the next three years.
Karnataka malls shut
The Karnataka government on Saturday allowed all shops and commercial establishments in the state which employ 10 or more people, to remain open for 24 hours in a day. The rule change applies for all days of the year for the next three years. The decision was taken in view of improving Karnataka's economy, which has been affected by the coronavirus pandemic. The notification was signed by Sandhya Nayak, Deputy Secretary of the Department of Labour in Karnataka. "The Government of Karnataka after holding an enquiry as required under sub section (2) of section 11 hereby permits all Shops and Commercial Establishments in the State employing ten or more persons to be open on 24 X 7 basis on all days of the year for a period of three years from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette subject to the provisions of sub section (3) of section 12," read the notification.  It stated that the work time for employees will remain at 8 hours every day or 10 hours with overtime. The notification mentioned that women employees can work in the night, with a consent letter signed by them and with adequate protection arranged by the employer like transport arrangements. It also stressed that overtime wages should be credited. The decision comes a year after night shifts were opened up for women in Karnataka in December 2019. It came with a set of conditions related to the safety of women, which will continue to apply when shops and businesses are allowed to remain open round the clock.  Karnataka currently has 11,058 active COVID-19 cases and the death toll due to the virus is 4,321. While businesses like restaurants opened in the state in September and theatres opened in October, schools reopened for the first time since the coronavirus lockdown on January 1.

Karnataka Primary and Secondary Education Minister S Suresh Kumar said that on the first day of schools reopening, class 10 students had an average attendance of 41%, while the number was 32.56 % for second-year PUC students (class 12).  Students of classes 10 and 12 returned to classrooms on Friday, as schools and pre-university colleges reopened in Karnataka after a nine-month hiatus due to the coronavirus outbreak. In some schools, students from classes 6-9 came to campuses for the Vidyagama programme, which enables continued schooling. The minister told reporters that nearly 3.8 lakh students returned to class 10 in 16,850 high schools, while the number stood at 78,794 for class 12 students in 5,492 colleges. "I was very happy today after seeing the students returning to their classes," Suresh Kumar said. "About 40% of attendance for class 10 and 32.56% attendance for PUC (class 12) is not bad. It is a good beginning we have made, I believe," he said, adding that the attendance in class 10 and 12 is likely to pick up the pace from Monday onwards. The minister further said that the state's education department will constitute several vigilance squads, to check whether the institutes are adhering to COVID-19 rules. "Online classes will continue as long as parents want it. No enforcement would be made on any parent or student at any given point of time," he added. TNM had earlier reported (please add link) about measures taken in schools in the state ahead of the reopening. Teachers were made to undergo COVID-19 tests, students had their temperatures checked and classes were staggered as precautionary measures.

Video of man attacking woman with machete in Karnataka given false communal spin

Crime
The people involved are both from the same community, investigating police said.
Hubballi, woman
A 30-second video of a man attacking a woman with a machete has been shared with ‘love jihad’ claim on Twitter and Facebook. The viral messages suggest that Ismail murdered a Hindu woman. The video was tweeted by @AchAnkurArya and Akash RSS. Both of them have shared misinformation in the past. pic.twitter.com/SMe11tXvZg — Ach. Ankur Arya (@AchAnkurArya) December 22, 2020 Below is a screenshot from Facebook that shows multiple users have posted the video with an identical claim. As earlier reported by TNM, the incident took place in Hubballi in Dharwad district of Karnataka and a stalker assaulted a woman in broad daylight. The name of the accused is Ismail K Kukura,25. SK Holeyannavar, the investigating police officer told TNM, “The woman ended the relationship and is now in a relationship with another man and this angered him.” He further said that while the victim's name is typically a Hindu name, it is also commonly used by other communities in villages near Hubballi. Police commissioner of Hubballi-Dharwad Labhu Ram also confirmed that the couple hails from the same community. The accused Ismail is an auto driver in Rampura in Dharwad district. The woman hails from Moraba village in Dharwad  The victim works at a jewellery store in Hubballi. Her employer reiterated to fact-checker Alt News that she is from the Muslim community. A Hubballi-based journalist confirmed that she is recovering well and has been shifted to the general ward. Thus, a video of a man attacking a woman with a machete in broad daylight has been given a false communal spin. Both of them follow the same faith. This story was published on Alt News. It has been republished with permission.
