Parents associations in Bengaluru warn of protests if school fee cut is revoked Blurb: Parents have also asked the government to appoint a fee determination committee like in Tamil Nadu and a regulator to look into the issue. Ever since the Primary and Secondary education Minister S Suresh Kumar announced the order of reduction of fees, the private school associations have been voicing their unhappiness with the order and have been asking the government to roll it back. Meanwhile the Karnataka Private Schools’ Parents’ Associations’ Coordination Committee has urged the government not to give in to pressure being exerted by private schools to revoke the order. “The school managements are creating an unnecessary ruckus. In a private meeting with the authorities, before the order was announced, they had agreed for the fee cut solution but are now going back on their word. Why are they not approaching the court where they can challenge the decision,” said BN Yoganand, member of the committee for Right to Education students. Parents have also asked the government to appoint a fee determination committee like in Tamil Nadu and a regulator to look into the issue. The parents have said that they will “hit the streets” if the government order is changed. Asking the government to take the lead and implement, the association with Voice of Parents-Karnataka Association released a press note. They mentioned in the note that the onus has fallen on parents “to reign in the violating schools by pursuing complaints”. The association demanded separate counters at block education offices to file complaints and an assurance that students will not be affected while the case is on.  “The schools have been using techniques to not implement the order. Some said they don’t have orders, others say they do not fall under the ambit of the state government.,” claimed Yoganand further adding that the welfare of the students has been ignored in the ongoing stir caused by the school managements unnecessarily. Read: Karnataka private schools ask govt to cap fee cut at 15%, demand grants Meanwhile, the school associations have decided to stick to their guns and continue to demand the revocation of the order. “The government consulting the parents’ demand is not wrong, they should rightfully do so. But they are listening to only one side of the story. Not all schools associated with us have economic backing like the big international or high-end ICSE and CBSE schools do. We want the government to take cognizance of our plight too and we have clearly explained it in the memorandum,” said PT Joseph, the senior Vice president of the Independent Schools’ Federation of India.   While Nooraine Fazal of Inventure Academy said that the government’s order is proving to be detrimental for institutions like theirs where the rapport between teachers, management and the staff have been amicable. “The school teachers need to get together and ask the government to look into their problems. Dragging on the issue will benefit no one, rather, will do more harm,” she said. Shashi Kumar, General Secretary of KAMS has alleged that they are facing issues with the management of the school and claimed that the government’s stance of asking for a blanket fee cut is entirely wrong when they have increased taxes and given no respite on the same. Joseph had earlier told TNM that there should be no distinction between total fees and tuition fees. He further added that if schools were only allowed to collect tuition fees and give 30 % concession in that amount, nothing will be left for the schools. Coupled with the implementation of the RTE policy, the schools are struggling financially, he said seeking help from the government to mitigate financial crunch. Read: Karnataka pvt school associations to stage protest against 30% fee cut Background The private school associations in Karnataka and the parents of students studying in private schools have been at loggerheads with the onset of the academic year over the issue of fee regulation and had asked the government to intervene in the issue. The parents had already staged agitation three times and took to the streets again in January asking for government intervention in the matter. The government had announced on January 29 that private schools can collect only 70% of tuition fees and cannot charge fees under any other header, but school managements have been asking the order be revoked, while the parents have accepted the order. The school management associations have been claiming that they are facing a shortage of finances to stay afloat. They have been demanding grants in lieu of the concession, as well as, demanded waivers on property tax, water bills and payment of students admitted in schools on basis of the right to education quota. They had already submitted a memorandum asking to cap fee cut at 15% but two days later, they demanded that the order be repealed and announced the staging of protest on February 23 in Bengaluru.

Actor Meghana Raj Sarja introduced her baby, who is now around three and half months old, to the world through a video on Sunday. Calling him “our Little Prince” and “our Simba”, the actor shared a video which begins with a video from her engagement with late actor Chirranjeevi Sarja, where the two of them promise to love each other forever. Chirranjeevi tragically passed away in June 2020, two years after they were married, due to cardiac arrest.  The video shows Chirranjeevi Sarja, with the voice of Mufasa from The Lion King saying, “I never left you. I never will,” before introducing their baby as “Simba”. Meghana had previously talked about how Chirranjeevi wanted to show off his child like Simba in The Lion King. “Chiru had identified one balcony in the hospital we visited regularly for check up. He would tell me often that he would hold up our child and show it to the world on the day our baby was born. But I have learned that all plans can never come true,” she had told the media weeks after the baby’s birth. At the time, Meghana had said that they were looking for names for the baby based on an auspicious letter suggested by the family astrologer.  She had said that after Chirranjeevi’s death, she had many moments of weakness and learned several “lessons” the hard way. She spoke of immense pain, and hope for a happy future, after her baby’s birth. “After his death, I learned that it is very important to enjoy the happiness in the present. One never knows what tomorrow will be like,” Meghana had said. She also maintained that she would not quit acting, and would get back to working in films in some time.

A day after the BJP's central disciplinary committee issued a show cause notice to its legislator from Vijayapura in Karnataka, Basanagouda Patil Yatnal, for his remarks against Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, Panchamasali community pontiff Basava Jaya Mruthyunjaya Swami on Saturday warned of laying siege to the Vidhana Soudha if the notice is not withdrawn.   Taking a dig at Yediyurappa's son BY Vijayendra, who is also the state BJP vice president, Basava said that everyone is aware of those behind serving the show cause notice to Yatnal.   "I know that a senior BJP leader's son is behind such an act. If the BJP does not withdraw its show cause notice then we will lay siege to the Vidhana Soudha. By issuing show cause notice to Yatnal they are trying to derail our movement, hence, we will make a serious attempt to gherao the Vidhana Soudha once we reach Bengaluru," he said.   The seer along with BJP legislator Yatnal and Congress leader Vijayanand Kashappanavar has been leading the 465 km march from Kudalasangama that will culminate in Bengaluru, with a rally scheduled on February 21.   Panchamasali, the largest sub-sect within the dominant Lingayat community to which Yatnal and Kashappanavar belong, while Yediyurappa belongs to the Banajiga sub-sect, have demanded that their existing reservation category be changed from 3B to 2A.   Their march reached Tumkuru, about 60 km from Bengaluru, on Friday night as the delegation stayed at the renowned Siddaganaga Matha.   "Yatnal and Kashappanavar are the two pillars of this movement. The community will stand by them if the parties try to exert any kind of pressure on them," he said.   As reported earlier Yatnal was served a notice for his constant tirade against Yediyurappa. Yatanal since October has been making statements like Yediyurappa will be removed from the CM’s position following Sankranti (April 14). He has also openly criticised the government’s functioning and alleged interference by Vijayendra.

At least 40 students of a private nursing college in Bengaluru have tested positive for the coronavirus, health officials said. The officials on Saturday said that that most of these students are from Kerala and the mass testing will be carried out in all the nursing and medical colleges of the city from February 14 to 20 Bengaluru's civic body Commissioner N Manjunath Prasad inspected the college and inquired about the measures initiated by authorities to tackle these cases. Prasad also appealed to the state government to make it mandatory for all the students coming to the city's educational institutions, to carry a negative Covid-19 test certificate that should not be older than 72 hours. The Karnataka government announced that students coming from Kerala to Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Mysuru, Kodagu and Chamarajanagar districts must get an RTPCR negative test report. The Commissioner said the Pulakeshi Nagar nursing college has a total of 210 students and majority are from Kerala. "The test reports showed 40 students had tested positive, while 28 are asymptomatic and 12 have mild symptoms. Among these 35 are girls and 5 are boys," he added. Prasad said that the authorities claim that Covid testing was conducted for all the students between January 25 and February 10 but as precautionary measure the Bengaluru civic body has stationed its medical team in the college premises. "Though the college has made arrangements for isolation of all the 40 students in the hostel with all basic facilities, we have also advised to isolate and quarantine all the 210 students for the next 14 days," he added. The Commissioner also directed the colleges to go for mass testing camps at all the nursing and medical colleges in the city. Meanwhile, the BBMP East Zone has appointed full-time field officers and marshals to work 24/7 to ensure there is no breach of isolation.

Karnataka Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa on Saturday said that American car maker Tesla will set up an electric car manufacturing unit in Karnataka. The statement was a part of the list of benefits promised to Karnataka in the Union Budget. "American firm Tesla will open a electric car manufacturing unit in Karnataka," the statement by Yediyurappa said. This is the first statement in which the government has said that an electric car manufacturing unit will be built in Karnataka by Elon Musk-led Tesla. Last month, Tesla registered its subsidiary Tesla India Motors and Energy Private Limited and listed three directors for the company. It was incorporated in Bengaluru and its directors are Vaibhav Taneja, Venkatrangam Sreeram and David Jon Feinstein. Taneja is the Chief accounting officer of Tesla. At the time of the announcement, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa tweeted that the electric car maker would open an R&D unit in Bengaluru but the tweet was quickly deleted. Following this, Gaurav Gupta, Additional Chief Secretary, Commerce and Industries in Karnataka told TNM that the timeframe and manner in which Tesla will operate in India is yet to be decided. He said that Tesla's announcement followed months of correspondence between the state government and the electric car manufacturer. Tesla was in contact with five state governments in India including Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu and Maharashtra. In January 2021, Elon Musk briefly became the world's richest person when his net worth grew to over $185 billion. He runs multiple companies including Tesla, SpaceX, The Boring Company, OpenAI and Neuralink. The electric car maker Tesla is based in Palo Alto, California.
