Two rebel Karnataka Congress MLAs meet BJP's SM Krishna, spark row

Politics
Ramesh revolted against the Congress and threatened to resign along with other rebel MLAs with a view of ousting the government earlier this year.
The informal meeting of two 'rebel' Karnataka Congress legislators with BJP's senior leader S.M. Krishna here on Sunday sparked speculation over the continuation of the year-old fledgling JD-S-Congress coalition government in the southern state. "Yes, the two Congress legislators - Ramesh Jarkiholi and K. Sudhakar met Krishna at his residence in the city for personal reasons as they both knew him well and the latter was a veteran Congressman till he resigned in early 2018 to join our party," BJP's state unit spokesman G. Madhusudan told IANS here. Jarkiholi, who was dropped from the coalition government on December 24, by the Congress and replaced by his elder brother Satish Jarkiholi, revolted against the party leadership for being ignored and threatened to resign along with a few other rebel legislators with a view to ousting the government. Jarkiholi is a three-time lawmaker from Gokak assembly segment in the state's northwest Belagavi district, about 550 km from here. Sudhakar, a legislator from Chikkaballapura assembly seat near Bengaluru, has been sulking for being denied a cabinet post in the ministry. "As our party has been ridiculed for predicting the imminent fall of the government due to various reasons and inherent contradictions, we will let actions speak louder than words hereafter. Just wait and see," hinted Madhusudhan. Ignoring the party leadership, Jarkiholi also did not campaign for the party's candidates in the recent Lok Sabha elections, in which the Congress retained only one parliamentary constituency (Bangalore Rural) and lost 20 of the 21 seats it contested along with its ally Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S). Defying the party leadership, Jarkiholi also did not attend the Congress legislature party meetings convened by its leader and former Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in January and February ahead of the budget session. Jarkiholi has also been trying to get two other rebel party legislators Mahesh Kamtahalli and Bheema Naik to join him in quitting the party for joining the BJP, which is reported to have promised plum cabinet post to them. "As the coalition government is surviving on a slender majority of 116 with 113 as the halfway mark for simple majority, resignation of 5-6 Congress or JD-S legislators will reduce it into a minority and a trial strength in the event of a floor test," added Madhusudhan. In the 225-member House, the BJP has 104, Congress 79 excluding the speaker and JD-S 37, with the remaining 2 Independents and 1 BSP and one nominated.

‘We are in wait and watch mode’: BJP in no hurry to form govt in Karnataka

Politics
Admitting that the BJP was open to mid-term Assembly elections to end the political uncertainty, a party official said the onus was on the allies to resign or collapse on its own.
An upbeat Bharartiya Janata Party (BJP) was in no hurry to form government in Karnataka by poaching legislators of the Congress or the Janata Dal-Secular (JD(S)), a party official said in Bengaluru on Monday. "We are not in hurry to form our government or bring down the fledgling JD(S)-Congress coalition government in the state. We are in a wait and watch mode," BJP's state unit spokesman G. Madhusudhan told IANS. Denying reports that party's state unit chief B.S. Yeddyurappa claimed having numbers or legislators to topple the year-old coalition government and form a BJP government in the state again, the official said: "If a few disgruntled Congress or JD(S) legislators want to join our party by resigning from their party and face bye-elections on our party ticket, they are welcome." After winning 25 of the 28 Lok Sabha seats in the state, the BJP has urged the ruling combine to resign and face mid-term Assembly elections to end the political instability and anarchy. "If the ruling allies have self-respect and integrity, their legislators should have resigned, owning moral responsibility for winning only one Lok Sabha seat each in the state and losing 26 seats to our party and an Independent," Madhusudhan said. A split verdict in the May 2018 Assembly elections threw up a hung House, with the BJP winning 104, the Congress 80, including the Speaker, and the JD(S) 37 seats in the 224-member House. To prevent the BJP from returning to power, the JD(S) and the Congress formed a post-poll alliance as the saffron party's three-day government collapsed for want of a simple majority on May 19, 2018. Though the mandate was against the ruling allies, they formed a post-poll alliance after contesting against each other in every parliamentary and Assembly seat since 1994-95, the BJP leader said. "By fielding joint candidates in all the 28 seats, 21 by the Congress and 7 by the JD(S), they could retain only Bangalore Rural and Hassan seats. They lost all the nine seats they had won in the 2014 general elections," recalled Madhusudhan. Admitting that the BJP was open to mid-term Assembly elections to end the political uncertainty, the party official said the onus was on the allies to resign or collapse on its own due to imminent revolt and resignations by a few of its disgruntled legislators. "We have not thought about it (mid-term Assembly elections), but are ready to face it and secure majority to form the next government," asserted Madhusudhan. The BJP formed its first government in the state in May 2008 under Yeddyurappa's leadership and lost the 2013 and 2018 elections to the Congress and the JD(S) subsequently. "Our party's high command has directed state leaders not to precipitate crisis till the NDA government is formed on May 30 and Narendra Modi takes oath as the Prime Minister again along with some ministers from our party and allies," Madhsudhan said. In a related development, former Congress Chief Minister Siddaramaiah tweeted: "Yeddyurappa (@BSYBJP) claims to form the government in spite of not having the number(s). This is a not a new drama, but is continuously misleading the public. Prime Minister Narendra Modi (@narendramodi) bowed to the Constitution (in the central hall of Parliament on May 25) but in which article has the Constitution given (him) the right for the BJP (@BJPIndia) to destabilise our government."

No cabinet reshuffle after Lok Sabha poll drubbing: Siddaramaiah confirms

Politics
Siddaramaiah said the Lok Sabha poll results were not a referendum for the state government but the performance of the central government.
File image
Former Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Monday announced there won’t be any change in the allocation of ministries of Congress legislators. However, the party will fill the post left vacant by late Minister CS Shivalli. This statement made by the leader of the Congress Legislative Party and the Chairman of the Coordination Committee between the JD(S) and Congress to reporters in Mysuru puts to rest speculation about a possible cabinet rejig. Following the drubbing in the Lok Sabha Elections, it was speculated that the Congress-JD(S) might go in for a complete reshuffle of the allocation of ministries. There were reports of the possibility of inclusion of dissident Congress MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi and independent MLA R Shankar in the cabinet. This as a mean to safeguard the coalition government from the threat of BJP luring its MLAs. Speaking to reporters on Monday, Siddaramaiah further said there was no threat to the government and there were no grounds of dissolving the current state government in light of the Lok Sabha Election results. He said the Lok Sabha poll results were not a referendum for the state government but the performance of the central government. The Congress and JD(S) managed to win only one seat each, with the BJP trouncing the alliance, emerging victorious in 25 seats. In a series of tweets, he also lambasted former CM and BJP state chief BS Yeddyurappa. “.@BSYBJP claims to form the govt inspite of not having the number. This is not a new drama but this is continuously misleading the public. Mr. @narendramodi bowed to the constitution but in which article has the constitution given the right for @BJP4India to destabilize our govt,” Siddaramaiah said. In a subsequent tweet, he added, Ramesh Jarkiholi won’t quit the party and the Congress-JD(S) won’t lose their numbers in the House due to horsetrading.

Cong-JD(S) mulls cabinet reshuffle, rebel MLAs to be made ministers?

Politics
A list of ministers who can be dropped without repercussions has been made.

Highly placed sources in the Congress say that Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy has called for a cabinet meeting on Wednesday, where the issue of dropping ministers will be raised. Party insiders say that Women and Child Welfare Minister Jayamala, Social Welfare Minister Priyank Kharge, Sugar from Commerce and Industries Minister RB Thimmapur, Backward Classes and Welfare Minister C Puttaranga Shetty, Labour Minister Venkataramanappa, Urban Development Minister UT Khade, Minor Irrigation Minister CS Puttaraju, Small Scale Industries Minister SR Sreenivas and Transport Minister DC Thammanna are on the list of ministers likely to be dropped during the rejig. These ministries will instead be given to MLAs who are likely to join the BJP, in an attempt to incentivise them.  “The reshuffle will happen in mid-June. Chief Minister Kumaraswamy has asked Congress leader Siddaramaiah to make a list of potential MLAs, who are likely to defect and hold talks with them. The Congress is also making a list of party loyalists, who can be removed from the cabinet without repercussions and replace them with rebels,” the source added. Congress sources say that four MLAs in the party have held talks with BJP leaders regarding defection including Chikkaballapura MLA Dr K Sudhakar, Hirekerur MLA BC Patil, Gokak MLA Ramesh Jarkiholi and Shivajinagar MLA Roshan Baig. “If these leaders stay back, the others won’t be persuaded to leave,” the source said. Firstly, there is demand for Priyank Kharge to be removed from his cabinet post. They are thinking about giving the seat to a leader from Hyderabad-Karnataka region. Someone from the Lambani community,” the source said. Deputy Chief Minister Dr G Parameshwara said that the party would initiate changes required to further political growth. “There will be organisation-level changes. There are no disgruntled MLAs and everyone is staying with the party,” he added. Sources in the BJP say that the party is confident of toppling the government and will bring in President’s rule soon and later go for snap polls in November this year. “Yeddyurappa kept making noises about the government falling but so far nothing happened. Five of a family killed as ambulance collides with their car in Bengaluru

Accident
The driver and the nurse who were in the ambulance survived the accident and are currently undergoing treatment.
Five people, all belonging to one family, were killed in a deadly road accident in Bengaluru on Monday after the hatchback they were travelling in was involved in a head-on collision with a government-run ambulance of the National Ambulance Service. The driver and the nurse who were in the ambulance have survived the accident and are currently undergoing treatment. The accident occurred between 12:30 am and 1 am on Monday at Kogilu cross in the Yehalanka in the northern fringes of the city. According to police, the family of five was heading towards the city from the airport side while the ambulance was heading towards the airport. “Prima facie, it appears to be the fault of the ambulance driver as he jumped over the centre median and hit the car coming from the opposite side. Only the driver and a nurse were travelling in the ambulance. They have sustained injuries but they are not very serious. However, all the passengers who were travelling in the private car have died,” Yehalanka Traffic Police Station Inspector told TNM. The private car was mangled due to the impact of the accident and firemen had to be called in to retrieve the bodies from the car. The bodies have been taken to the Yehalanka Government Hospital. The deceased have been identified as Dipankar Dey (46); his wife, Swagata Chaudhury (42); their son, Dhruva Dey (14); Swagata’s sister, Sujaya (45) and their mother Jayanthi (65). “All the victims are from West Bengal, we have contacted their family members,” the police added. The police said that they will investigate the cause of the accident and arrest the driver of the ambulance if he is found guilty. “Right now both of them (the driver and the nurse) are in the hospital. We will investigate the incident and arrest him if required,” the inspector added.

FIR against newspaper editor for article on Nikhil Kumaraswamy's alleged drunken tantrum

Controversy
The FIR was filed against Vishwavani editor-in-chief Vishweshwar Bhat on the basis of a complaint by the JD(S).
The Karnataka police have filed an FIR against the editor-in-chief of a Kannada newspaper, for an article about Nikhil Kumaraswamy that the JD(S) claims is defamatory. Vishweshwar Bhat, the editor-in-chief of Vishwavani, has been accused of publishing ‘derogatory remarks’ against the Karnataka Chief Minister’s son on the front page of the paper on Saturday. A complaint was filed by Pradeep Kumar, an official of the JD(S) legal cell, at the Srirampura police station in the city on Sunday. "We have received a complaint claiming that a news article that appeared in Vishwavani paper on Saturday about Nikhil Kumaraswamy. We have registered the FIR based on relevant sections," confirmed a police official at Srirampura police station. The article in question is titled "Nikhil Kumaraswamy Raatri Rampata" (Nikhil Kumaraswamy's night fracas) and said that Nikhil had caused a ruckus at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Mysuru on Thursday night, after he lost the Lok Sabha election to Mandya. According to the piece, an angry and drunk Nikhil threw a tantrum at the hotel on Thursday, and yelled, “It is a humiliation that I have lost to a woman. Mandya's people have not held my hand. My dream of being an MP did not come true.” He also allegedly said, “You (Deve Gowda) got me tangled in the Mandya labryinth. In spite of having eight MLAs, we were not able to win. Didn't HD Revanna gain the support of Congress in Hassan? Why weren't you able to gain the support of Congress rebels Cheluvarayaswamy and Narendra Swamy?” “In spite of friends and hotel officials trying to console him, he argued against them and caused a commotion,” the article said. However, while Radisson Blu hotel confirmed that Nikhil Kumaraswamy had stayed with them on Thursday night, they denied any such incident as reported by the paper. “We have not received any complaints and there was no such incident as reported in the papers," a manager at the hotel told TNM. Though it is tough to know whether the hotel's denial is true or a forced one, it is surprising that the JD(S) has filed a case under various sections against a source-based story. Article in Vishwavani paper on 25 May In their complaint, the JD(S) contended that the article not only defamed Nikhil Kumaraswamy and his grandfather HD Deve Gowda, but was also "fictitious" and that no such incident took place. Police registered an FIR under IPC sections 499, 500, 501 (defamation), 504 (intentional insult), 506 (criminal intimidation), 420 (cheating), 406 (criminal breach of trust), and 468 (forgery). "We are yet to intimate Vishweshwar about the FIR," added a police official at Srirampura police station. While other publications have also subsequently reported about the incident, the JD(S) has chosen to file a complaint against Vishwavani alone. Nikhil Kumarawamy has a history of behaving badly in public. In 2006 – when HD Kumaraswamy was the Chief Minister of Karnataka – he trashed Empire hotel in Bengaluru’s Church Street, when the restaurant refused to serve him and his friends at 3.30am. The then-19-year-old and his friends were drunk, and chucked beer bottles and attacked the staffers. "I am the CM's son and I'll get this hotel blown up and closed," Nikhil was quoted as saying by one of the hotel employees back in 2006. Vishweshwar Bhat is the editor-in-chief of Vishwavani newspaper. He was previously the editor-in-chief of Vijaya Karnataka, Kannada Prabha, and Suvarna News. The news of the FIR sparked an uproar on social media, with several BJP supporters and leaders in the state defending Vishweshwar. Shobha Karandlaje, BJP MP from Udupi-Chikkamagaluru took to Twitter to criticise CM HD Kumaraswamy for curtailing freedom of expression in the state. Curtailing FOE has become the only job of @hd_kumaraswamy!! After witch-hunting the RW SM activists, now Co-Ja govt is after the popular media houses & it's editors. False FIR has been reg against @VishweshwarBhat, for publishing merely a news article!!#EmergencyInKarnataka pic.twitter.com/55JYqAkxgP — Shobha Karandlaje (@ShobhaBJP) May 27, 2019 Several other BJP leaders including BL Santhosh, CT Ravi, and Arvind Limbavali also took to social media to term the police action against Vishweshwar as 'Emergency in Karnataka' and said that the state government is going after print media professionals after initially filing cases against social media activists. Dear @hd_kumaraswamy Avare, By ordering witch-hunt against Social Media Activists & Editors of newspapers aren't you reducing Governance to a joke? Do you think you & your family are above every one? Shouldn't you be held accountable? Is this Democracy?#EmergencyInKarnataka — C T Ravi ಸಿ ಟಿ ರವಿ (@CTRavi_BJP) May 27, 2019 Its #EmergencyInKarnataka After attacking social media activists now @hd_kumaraswamy’s dictatorship is targeting journalists FIR filed on renowned journalist @VishweshwarBhat. The FIR against the editor comes weeks after police in the state took action against five BJP sympathisers – journalists Mahesh Vikram Hegde and Hemanth Kumar, and BJP supporters Shruti Belakki, Sharada Diamond, and Ajith Shetty Heranje – for instances of fake news shared by them. Mahesh was detained and let go by the police, while Hemanth, Shruti, and Sharada were arrested for sharing a fake letter which was supposedly written by Karnataka Home Minister MB Patil to Sonia Gandhi in 2017. The letter discussed a meeting ministers held with representatives of the “Global Christian Council” and “World Islamic Organisation” regarding the strategy to be adopted for the Karnataka Assembly Elections.(The organisations do not exist). Man electrocuted as rains along with strong winds lash Bengaluru

Weather
The rains, accompanied by strong winds, also uprooted trees and disrupted power supply in many areas.
Representational image
Moderate rains and gale in Bengaluru over the weekend has resulted in the death of one man. Satish, aged 35, was killed after he stamped on a live electric wire near his house which had fallen due to the strong winds.  Bengaluru Mayor Gangambika Mallikarjun visited the house of the deceased and met his family members in Ramachandrappa Garden in Cox Town on Sunday. The Mayor has announced a compensation of Rs 5 lakh for the next of kin. According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), Bengaluru received 27.2 mm rainfall starting from Sunday 8:30am to Monday 8:30am, and wind speeds reached upto 32 km/hr. With this, several trees were also uprooted causing damage to property and disruption to traffic movement. There was waterlogging in many important junctions in the city including Mekhri Circle, Cauvery Junction and Mysore Road. According to Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP), as many as 56 trees and 596 isolated branches have fallen all over the city. Deputy Chief Minister G Parameshwara, who holds the Bengaluru Development portfolio, has asked all eight zonal commissioners to prioritise clearing of trees and minimise inconvenience to the public. Snapping of power lines also meant that residents were without electricity for hours in some places. Meanwhile, weathermen have warned that the city will continue to receive one or two showers over the course of the week, along with gusty winds due to prevailing weather conditions.  Speaking to TNM on Sunday, Sunil M Gavaskar, meteorologist at the Karnataka State Disaster Monitoring Centre, warned of similar thunderstorms and gale in Bengaluru and the entire Cauvery basin area. There will be rain in the coastal belt too before the onset of monsoon, which is set to arrive in the first week of June.
