This year, there were doubts about whether the celebration will be held on a large-scale due to the birthday coming just a day after the Lok Sabha elections in 14 constituencies in the state. However, allaying fears of a low-key celebration, CM HD Kumaraswamy confirmed that plans were in place to hold celebrations across the state. Born in 1929 as Singanalluru Puttaswamayya Muthuraju, he was renamed Rajkumar for his on-screen avatar. In a film career spanning several decades, he acted in over 200 films and is still remembered as the most celebrated actor of the Kannada film industry. He has been conferred various titles, that of Nata Saarvabhouma (emperor of actors), Bangarada Manushya (man of gold), Vara Nata (gifted actor) and Rajanna (elder brother, Raj). He is also a recipient of the Padma Bhushan in 1983 and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award in 1995 for lifetime contribution to Indian cinema. He is survived by his three sons Shiva, Raghavendra and Puneeth, who are all actors in the Kannada film industry, and daughters Lakshmi and Poornima.
